    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's also stress testing, you have to be in situations you cannot deal with to realize flaws in your technique or method. This is where many MA or SD programs fail, they don't appropriately stress test.
Sure that Krav Maga/Karate/"insert martial art here" can take down or control the body of a participant or student, they automatically submit due to the situation and don't actually resist the way an aggressor.
If you put some protective gear on, and go near full-out, many techniques simply don't work, either you can't apply them under stress, or they don't work well on a resisting opponent. Effective training looks ugly, and it seems chaotic sometimes, but the fact that the trainer here has them doing these drills shows he does actually know his shit, even if you didn't know anything about him you can tell.
I wish more martial arts circles would get into realistic training to failure. If you don't push yourself physically, in both conditioning and application, you will fail when the real situation comes along.

In terms of education, no, the education system inherently teaches certain groups of people they can ONLY fail. Which is why people in these demographics don't commit to it or follow it all the way, even if they live in a country with free education.
Failure happens, but if you are failing often, your method of learning simply isn't working.
In terms of physical training, you have to train to failure to understand what you need to improve and to do so. But that is because our bodies respond to progressive overload concerning muscle strength and memory.

Actually had an interesting lesson about knives in karate.
Our teacher told us to put on a white shirt and then the other person was given a marker. Then our teacher just told us to "do what you can, but don't get hit by the marker"
The shirt definitely didn't stay white on anyone... But it was a great learning experience that you wouldn't get away clean against someone with a marker (even less against someone with a knife) :D

      @mrx2586 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Try getting an inexperienced person doing that with a boxer who is actually trying to hit them hard.

Almost everyone of us got cuts and some of us got tendon and nerves cut. It's no joke. This was before everyone had to start using puncture protection shirts and gloves. But when it came to killing a fully armoured soldier whether one on one or in battle, if you didn't have a big weapon like a pole arm or a warhammer (or even using your sword and hitting them with the cross guard), then your best bet would be to wrestle them down and stab them in the gaps.

You would think that it’s obvious right? Knife is a short range weapon. What do ppl instinctively do at short range? They grab you. Of course you need wrestling. Furthermore knife doesn’t often incapacitate immediately. Very often the person who is stabbed can fight on for minutes. If he is bigger, stronger or more capable at wrestling, he could very well pin and knock you out, disarm or even worse get your knife to stab you.

In the Army, we trained under stress for this reason and STILL it’s always easier said then done. But there will always be someone from the outside looking in saying “just do this or that, or it’s simple as this or that.” In shooting classes, “just double tap to the body and one in the head. No ones going to get to me.” Then when you ever ask then politely if they could do that under stress, they get offended and come at you like you asked the most unholiest of questions.

Combat training requires months of weekly repetition to fix movements into your muscle memory, so that your body will instinctively react with those movements under stress without you having to think about it.

Yeah in the real world a quick stab with a knife in most places other than the abdomen ends the fight in seconds. you dont wrestle. you jab him once with the knife and dance around to keep away as best as you can and let exsanguination do the work. they want to get close to grapple you just slash and then stab. There are dozens of videos on youtube where some bad ass thought he was going to start shit with a guy who had a knife. receives one quick jab backs off for a seconds or two see the blood and then just collapses. The mechanical damage a knife does is hard to comprehend especially for those not familiar with its real life usage.

Absolutely, even professional soldiers of ancient times (masters of melee) used daggers as a very last resort. Otherwise they always opted for spears, clubs, or swords. When they did use it, it was a surprise weapon to kill an enemy who was on top of you. In modern times you either carry a gun,(train with said gun of course) or you take mixed martial arts(and train even more intensely for longer to make practical use)

A untrained guy with a knife will destroy any highly trained MMA guy in a heart beat. I dont think you really understand the reality of facing an edged weapon. a knife will almost always win. You cant grapple against one. you cant disarm it. you cant come with in striking distance. you can only keep out of measure. and if you dont know what the term out of measure is then you really have no clue about edged weaponry. And at close range a knife will beat a gun.

If your going to tell other people that they "dont really understand the reality of facing an edged weapon" or any similar crap for god sake read their comment first and write content that actually addresses the points they have made. It is obvious that you don't know what you are talking about and that you did not even bother to read what you are replying to.
Your average person with a knife has almost no chance at all against an MMA fighter!
I've been doing full contact martial arts for 5 years and there are still people who I spar with who I can't do anything to.
If I had a knife and I tried to fight ANY unarmed MMA fighter I would have absolutely no chance at all.
I could not stab them, I could not slash them, I could not grapple with them, I could not do any sort of striking - against a MMA fighter even if I had a knife I would be unable to do anything.
It's not just MMA fighters. If I got in a fight with someone who has a history of fighting and violence I would have no chance at all. If I tried to use a knife against such a person I would drop it and be overwhelmed very very quickly and the person I tried to attack would have no injuries at all.
This would be the outcome every single time - no exceptions!
      Also
A knife does not beat a gun at close range, a knife is no match for a gun it is not even a close second. You are clearly repeating crap that you have read elsewhere with absolutely no idea if it has any merit or not.

More people need to be saying this. Theres a difference between tools that fit our self-defense fantasies and make us feel better and tools that are actually likely to help us defend ourselves.
I grew up with Army uncles who bought me many knives for self-defense, especially in my early twenties when I was working nights and dealing with a lot of harassment walking home after work. Even with a lot of training and having EDC knives for self-defense for 15 years I don’t think they’re a practical self-defense tool, and I NEVER recommend them to my friends for self-defense.
If you can’t knife-fight you can’t defend yourself with a knife, period, and that’s just not a skill most people are developing and it does take a certain level of physical strength and fitness especially when you don’t know who you’re going to need to defend yourself against.
What they are GREAT for is a visual deterrent. The sight of a knife will deter an opportunist in a way the sight of pepper spray won’t always do- it generally makes you more trouble than you’re worth when the majority of other potential targets aren’t already in a position to stab someone. I always carry both a knife and pepper spray gel- especially as I get older and less fit for more hand-to-hand self-defense. Just opening my knife without saying anything has made people who were tailing me or acting sketchy cross the street or walk in the other direction without ANY escalation dozens of times at this point (and has within the last month, even), but for my safety I strongly prefer to rely on something that has a little more range and ease of use. I really don’t want anyone close enough that I CAN use a knife in that kind of situation if I can help it.

Small enough to wear as a neck knife or conceal easily on the belt. It works great for everyday carry, is made with steel that holds a razor edge, is short enough for most cities/states, and is super comfortable using regular cutting tasks. I know where it is on my body by reflex in a pinch, and I can grab and index it by feel without thinking. Plus, it doesn't look super tactical, so cops don't generally hassle you over it unless fixed blades are illegal in that area.

Cool session, knives take more cuts than people realize for a finisher, but the unrealistic part of training this scenario is that no ones going to want to get stabbed. There is a threatening element to bladed weapons. I see someone with a bat, and I think if I close distance and catch early I can mitigate damage. I see a knife I think, "oh fuck, I'm going to get stabbed, bleed to death and fucking die." And those are my thoughts when I'm clear headed. The situation in which you can actually catch a irl blade are very rare. People think you just grab the wrist and your good, but that couldn't be further from the truth as you've just placed your arm lined with arteries next to a sharp blade that is on a ball joint that still has full rotation. You are going to get stabbed fighting someone who has a knife. That's why I advocate knives for self defense personally.

Of course all the martial arts I’ve taken very rarely have any of the so called experts ever been in a knife fight. Not that they aren’t good but real life is very different. Even in the military you take out the right person everyone else loses their will. It’s all about picking the right person.
Training with gear is important for cardio, but it’s not the same as a live blade wanna see the difference use a metal trainer but tell the person it’s sharp see how much wrestling they do.
This training shows jujitsu is good but going to the ground in my city you will die. That has always been my hang up about BJJ , so I took kav maga , then I couldn’t find a gym when I moved to Florida after I healed up from a home invasion. I had a broken arm an ribs so I was looking for something that made me deadly with both hand I found kali, Jkd, Arnis. Trained in all three ever since. So far that is the most like the violence I’ve encountered in real life.

Exactly, the psychology of being cut open or seeing someone fileted is not being factored in here. While you can't "bank" on it, it is a very real factor in a fight. This whole "drill' seems impractical. The "opponents" here are not concerned about the "knife" as most real people would be. Granted your attackers could be crazy or hopped up on some drug which makes them like maniacs and one should be prepared for that, but even maniacs can't fight very well when you stab or slash their eyes (like many of the hits I saw in the "fight" would have) or been stabbed 20 times by 4" or longer blade in the ribs and lungs. In this "drill" they just ignore the massive damage they would be taking (not to mention blood loss) and keep going back for more.

In a knife seminar I took, many years ago, the instructor emphasized that the goal was to "defang the snake".
Slicing/slashing the attackers wrist, forearm(inside or outside), back of hand, achilles tendon if you end up on the ground, are all potential fight enders. His point was to create and maintain distance, disable the opponent and run away while they try to stop the bleeding. I'm very curious as to what you think of this strategy,

Yes, cutting certain areas on the arm and leg will quickly disable the opponent. A good book backed by medical professionals about this subject is called: Contemporary Knife Targeting.

I carry knives. And guns legally. A knife is good for close quarter situations something u can quickly deploy. Its a decent last resort option in my opinion. But if u r not fit, and can't grapple then the knife can be turned on u. I don't like when some people think o I have a knife/gun I am safe. Not if u have no training. Train with your weapons and train your body most of all

You just dont seem to get, that a bunch of martial arts guys doing sparring is not a depiction of reality. People (rare exceptions exist) wont just go complete berserk on you for no reason with no consideration for their own safety. Your fight vs 2 would at the latest have been over an 7:13, where you got solid knife hits to both their faces. You got several more good hits. 8:27. Game over. 8:57. Stabs to face and throat. Game over. In fact, it would would never have come that far, since a real fight almost always starts with a verbal confrontation (definetly not in a wrestling position). You would have had plenty of time to draw prior. And no sane unarmed person would assault you weilding a knife in the real world (again, mentally ill people do exist), unless you went around urinating on their mothers graves or did provoke them to blind rage in some other way. Self preservation and shock are things that exist.
Real world self defense and your martial arts hobby just arent the same thing. If you understood that you could draw much more from the latter for the first...
And the escalating tough guy know-it-all attitude doesnt help to overlook that.

It is interesting that no one wants to reply to your comment. Almost everything that I'm seeing in this video is "fighting" rather than self- defense. I've never seen criminals attack by grappling their victim to the ground but I have seen fights in bars and clubs where this does happen. In my opinion, self-defense needs to be based on what a normal (weaker) person would do, rather than what an "Ultimate Warrior" would do.

You looked good out there. My unarmed combat/ edged weapons training looked a little different, but I have an extensive background in combatives, MMA, H2H etc. My knife isn't fancy, it's a Smith & Wesson H.R.T. The reason I like it is the grip is rubber, fairly ergonomic, with a good spot for your thumb when thrusting. The blade is long enough to reach vital organs and small enough to slip between the intercostal space between ribs. It's secure in its scabbard, but easily removed if needed, if I found myself in that kind of trouble.
It's not as easy to carry as some of the smaller knives, but IWB, at 3 o'clock (I'm a left handed shooter) 9 o'clock, 5:30 or 6:30, it rides pretty well.

Not the "Tootsie Roll"!🤣👌 I agree that when most people hold a weapon, the majority of their attention is on the weapon that they are holding and they expect you to do the same. This can be a mistake against someone who isn't afraid of the weapon.
The training looks outstanding and extremely realistic. Starting from a clinch position makes it even more difficult to use the first attacker as a shield, lining people up is much easier if you get the upper hand from the beginning. Nothing about a street fight is easy, pretty, or without injuries. I agree that anyone that's serious about personal protection should take this gentleman's course, it looks great! If striking were allowed (with boxing gloves) from the clinch position, that could possibly give someone a split second to loosen the grip of the first attacker.
    Thank you for the video!

TANTO tips arguably have some advantages (easy research) but if you're going to USE your knife in any way that will dull it (aside from its intended use ,in this case, that you will hopefully never need), sharpening that tip has a bit of a learning curve. Hope this helps!
