- Today I'm taking a look at staple cards, Commanders, and combos that have aged out of the cEDH meta game. We're looking at interaction, archetype defining cards, and the decks that used to dominate cEDH tables but have either disappeared or fallen into obscurity.

For the commanders I'd actually say that for decks like Zur and Gitrog it's more to do with the communities being stuck in the past. The Zur playerbase is really set on how Zur plays and the Gitrog community actually made it's primer impossible to learn from on purpose.
Zur I think is playable now due to Borne. However, it doesn’t mean it’s back.
@@michaelzheng2217It's not a question of if Zur is back, it's a question of if the deck has had any real attempts at innovation since Kaladesh.
I still jam Anje and Worldgorger, with PITA off Hoarding Broodlord. Yes I do get blown out sometimes, but it's still one of my favorites to play.

As a TnT pilot for years... Flash ban hurt, dockside put us behind, and bowmasters is killing us lol
Bowmasters really put the deck down in the dirt. Both commanders draw and kill all the dorks. Makes me sad.
As someone who started to brew for EDH/cEDH last year, coming from Modern/Legacy/Timeless, I appreciate the fact that I kind of saw the writing on the wall for a lot of the things you discussed in the video and feel pretty vindicated by where I stood lol. I do think the format still has a lot of potential to grow its meta by the way I was ingratiated into the different popular strategies then and now. Solid video

Small tidbit for dovin's veto at the very beginning, some blue farm pilots like myself do use dovin's veto, either show me swat or your thing gets countered.
Yeah it comes up every now and then in a few lists, that's usually the case with the different two mana counters that have various upsides.
I run Scepter/Reversal in my Niv-Mizzet Parun cEDH list as a back-up combo, it would probably be the next cut depending on future sets!
I'm still working on Winota, pure damage and extra slots dedicated to protection of Winota including bad cards like Lightning Greaves haha. Never going to let this deck go!
Zur took 2nd at the SCG 5k in Philly!
I saw that! I'm really curious to see how it'll shape up through this year, it's got more people working on it now and definitely showing up more than it was a year or two ago.
@@LemorasCardsAlso comedian took 4th with a sultai hermit druid deck that ran Raza and Life/Death. It was neat to see throwbacks.
@mrbagleman I think The Master is in a super unique position to take advantage of a lot of different packages, it's really cool to see. I'd love a sultai list that can consistently show up and do well in big events.

playing a fringe commander for 3 years now in cedh its fun to see and agree with a lot of cards on this list and the hours of discord discussion as to why i made certain cuts. Teysa scion was a huge razakat reanimator deck. it came to the point with so much new hate for breach lines and other ppl running reanimate and agatha that it was risky to put anything of value for more than a turn in your own graveyard. I have moved off many creatures like blood artist for elas just because 2 toughness means surviving OBM to win the game. Plunge into darkness I still swear by because you dont have to go all in with it. sometimes its good play just to dig 5 cards with it at end of opponents turn before yours. shred memory is also becoming more relevant now with tutor being an ability and having exile grave cards. I agree with a lot mentioned here the decks needed to adapt to new meta threats which make some go to strong lines or themes of the past less relevant now.
you rarely see any 3 color commanders now and i think unless partner most 2 color commanders have access to a large enough pool of good stuff now that you can lean heavy enough into a theme and still have answers. Korvold fell off the face of the earth and that was a threat 2 years ago. marneus is an example of the amount of value you need in the command zone now if the commander alone is 3+ color. I think master transcendent may have a chance since its doing its own archetype and very well. and depending on new enchantments i can see zur maybe becoming relevant again.

I have been a cedh lurker on and off for years, took a break around 2021, and now I'm floored at the changes. TnT is not dominant? Tymna is mid? Green is beneath white and red? Stax doesn't exist? Wheels died? Wtf happened lol. Coming out of this time capsule is crazy. If you went back to 2017 and said red is a top color you'd be jailed for insanity.
Well a few of these are pretty accurate, TnT is basically dead, Tymna is still pretty good as TnK reigns supreme, green is down bad but looks to be getting strong cards in MH3, Wheels are good though not every deck runs them, stax currently is basically replaced as an archetype by ability based commanders that build out combo wins like Sisay or Magda, Red has two of the most busted cards in Underworld Breach and Dockside but doesn't have a ton of bangers.
I still jam Oko because in reasonable creature decks he can elk a couple one rings and do other stuff

I loved running Kess and Winota, but my pod eventually moved passed them. I still play Gitrog though. It's like a slot machine. I win early or I die.
Oof, I'll take WGD, combo is a glass cannon for sure. Vilis hurts though. I've had crazy runs with that card.
Incidentally i feel like the fear of bowmasters is more impactful than the card itself. Card is strong for sure, but youre not getting got by it every game. Like pulling dorks and draw engines entirely seems overly cautious.
Edit - I feel like hermit druid isn't entirely gone. Theres a lurrus uensen build out there somewhere. Ive been brewing thrasios tevesh with Tyvar, Jubilant brawler in the 99. Decent card, and it turns your druid or witch into a sorcery, which is workable. It even allows a doomsday pile.
People are also allergic to running creature counters in a creature heavy meta as well, stern scolding is a good include to deal with stuff like docksides, bowmasters, ragavan, copy creatures etc and you're right it's not worth cutting all the good draw staples because of bowmasters, if you're running green you also have veil of summer
Not me just adding lim duls to my cedh list to try out as a search alternative with so many opp agents in the format. Trying it out over Diabolic intent.
I cut a little segment where I said it should probably see more play as a potential payoff.

i still jam lim duls vault in sisay. It gets around oppo agents
If your commander has high toughness and/or ward and you don't run many creatures, then Brainstorm is still ok - feeding the opposing Bowmasters hurts someone else
It's mainly that Brainstorm is just a bit low impact in this format to be worth a slot in most decks.
Usually when I see the word "yet", I'm compelled to say "yait" as well.
I have high hopes for The Master Transcendent to bring back sultai on the map !

It's cool and good, but it's gone from "I expect to see it" to "ooooh spicy"
yeah it was a big day when i pulled raza out of my deck. it took looking over excel sheets of date to realize that i wasnt winning enough with that line in my deck and actually loosing to having it in my deck almost 50% of the time with a year of data. it opens up a lot of slots in the deck to put other cards in so keep your deck list saved with and a new one one without and compare. I still side board it in time to time its a really fun line!
@@psytpd oh no no I'm sorry, I'm not saying I agree with Razaketh being on here XD I'm currently playing a reanimator deck (often against Matthew) and I'm just jabbing about how it's still good. Def not as common or abuseable in every deck, but still an insanely broken card that's v good atm
outside of abrupt decay what would you recommend running instead of assassin's trophy?
Depends on your colors and what permanents you're worried about, generally I'd just try to avoid 2 mana removal especially if it's got double pips

I don't know why but 4+ color piles just seem so uninteresting. Maybe it's the fact that they lose their color identity.
Problem with walkers is the blue farm match up which is everywhere. Kraum just killing most of the good ones in 1 hit.
I'm seeing people play minsc and boo and I'm just like idk how you get away with it unless you're literally dodging the most played deck or opening drannith every game.

@PrinceofPain1776 I never said it was unplayable, I said it used to be the top deck in the format, and right now, it's newsworthy if it gets a top 16.

On a more serious and engaging note, how is Yeva representative of cEDH in the past?
Yeva's been the cEDH community's pariah since day one, but has remained ever present. Perhaps you meant Yisan or Selvala, lists that have struggled tremendously in events in the last 5+ years compared to Yeva.

Every time I hear Planeswalkers are weak in commander I want to stop watching the video. Let me ask you, in WHICH format are they good????? This is the format they're good in (regarding commander as a whole, not cEDH), because it's not a 1v1 combat focused format like every other AND Wizards only prints planeswalker removal 90% of the time on black cards which are unefficient and won't be played.
You're telling me an INCREMENTAL VALUE PIECE THAT'S HARD TO REMOVE is a bad card type in a LONGER GAME FORMAT?
WELL SORRY FROM THEM FOR NOT PRINTING A 2 MANA PLANESWALKER THAT WINS YOU THE GAME IN THAT VERY SAME TURN. 90% of all artifacts and enchantments that are printed never see any cEDH play, ARE THOSE BAD CARD TYPES BECAUSE OF ""StAtiStiCs"??
I fucking hate planeswalkers so much, they're bullshit, they're ALWAYS the problem at a casual table, and I wish they never got printed. I feel respite for them not being good enough for cEDH, but as a card type in commander they're incredibly strong and y'all are TRIPPING if you say otherwise.
You wrote all to forget the title of this video is cEDH
Planeswalkers get the same boost enchantments do in casual commander in that you have a lot of time to sit around and develop to build your engines.
But individual planeswalkers are often weak because of how free it is to take them out since every deck is likely to have creatures in play and theres three opponents. There's only a few strong enough in cEDH to be worth getting one activation or to try to protect.

The only one that really sees play in cedh is tezz the seeker and that's cuz it's basically copy #2 of the one ring and a win con for certain decks.

I agree with pretty much everything he said in this video, what is the terrible take? He's basically looking at stats from recent tournaments, his points here are largely objective.
i can see top, scroll rack and a lot lesser played top deck tutors gaining some popularity again with people testing out powerbalance
