People thinking they get protection from one ring off tezzeret the seeker or transmute artifact. People not realizing that tainted pact hitting 2 of the same named basic makes it stop. People thinking clones target when they don't.
Can I get a clarification. Talion doesn't get to choose a number of he etbs with a dress down on the table right? It's similar to how all lands enter etb with blood moon in play.
One thing of note for opposition agent since you're fully controlling the player you have access to all hidden information so anything exiled face down or their hand. I always get weird looks when I ask to see their hand when I flash in an oppo.
@@unequalgaming pretty sure some things exiled face down are not revealed info for a player that owns it. So you may have to see if its known knowlege for the player thats getting oppoed
8:40. In a tournament setting, if someone "prepays" for rhystic, that's a bleed. Once they've tapped mana and put something on the stack, they can't untwiddle that mana. Giving them room to walk back is a grv and also inoptimal.
Sylvan Library is a trigger. You draw for turn (keep it separate) and can respond to the draw trigger. Most relevant, with a worldly tutor or something similar. Also, Library is a may. If someone flashes in bowmasters, you do not need to draw.
Also, Sylvan cares about total cards drawn this turn, not just with it's own ability. Meaning you can, for example, tap The One Ring in your upkeep to draw cards, then draw 2 extra with Sylvan, then put back cards you drew with The One Ring.
This was an awesome video topic! Would love to see more like this. Maybe even common mistakes made when resolving certain lines or something like that?
Great video bro, should've seen my face when I realized I've been playing Eldritch Evolution for years and never ONCE read the exile clause on the last line. Could you please do more explanations on how layers work in a future video? I feel like after mastering the stack and priority, layers are one of the hardest concepts to understand. And you are really good great at articulating rules! Some of the biggest mistakes I see players make at my tables: ~Using artifacts that clone creatures like Machine God's Effigy and forgetting they have summoning sickness ~Treating cards like Cryptolith Rite and Insidious Roots as if they were Earthcraft or Urza, Lord High Artificer ~Shuffling techniques that are technically cheating ~Never understanding how Urza's Saga interacts with land altering static abilities ~The timing on the payment of costs ~Endurance's ETB trigger puts a player's graveyard on the bottom of it's owner's library in a random order, it does not shuffle them into the library ~Kinnan players trying to put a Trophy Mage into play with his ability ~Misunderstanding Tayam and Krark/Sakashima lines
Thank you, I'll definitely do some similar stuff going forward. I will say with Machine Gods Effigy specifically that it won't have summoning sickness because it isn't a creature.
Amazing video! I didn't know about the layer thing between Magus and Dress Down. Also, I've been wrongly using the alternate cost for Deflecting and Fierce when having Underworld Breach on the battlefield. Thanks man!
Another really cool interaction with Gilded Drake, when someone is trying to Drake another opponent's creature, you can two for one them with a removal spell responding to the ETB. From the Gatherer text: "If the chosen creature to exchange is not on the battlefield at resolution, then sacrifice this card. (2004-10-04)"
12:24 Shoulda used a newer version of Necropotence, I was staring at it wondering how you respond to a replacement effect until I pulled up the Oracle text and figured out that it got errata'd to be a trigger
Idk if it was mentioned but the first thing i saw was gemstone caverns doesnt let the turn 1 seat pregame it. Im posting this b4 the vids start btw. But its my first real rule relization ive had
One I see messed up a lot is Mana vault. The trigger to untap it is on upkeep but the trigger to take the damage isn't until the draw step. So if you have a necropotence out, you won't take the one from mana vault
I'd love some kind of patron/coaching thing for just getting into the format, that seems incredibly useful. Looking over decks too, that seems equal parts fun and insightful
I was wondering with the guilded drake: if you let it resolved and the owner of the spell already mentioned the target, it means that you already passed priority, therefore, i would not be able to cast sword to plowshares right?
@eddipl5055 no, when it resolves, the trigger goes on the stack and the owner of the trigger immediately has to name a target. Then priority goes around for the trigger to resolve.
Another Necropotence thing. It allows you to circumvent silence effects. Let’s say you pay a bunch of life to Necro and another player plays silence before you get the cards. That’s fine. When you move to cleanup, you discard to hand size and ALL EFFECTS THAT LAST UNTIL END OF TURN CEASE. However, discarding cards caused a Necro trigger. This means players get extra rounds of priority since the stack isn’t empty. Know what that means? You are no longer silenced and can try to win with Born Upon a Wind.
I actually recorded a segment about that but it ended up being a little long for what was relatively niche advice, though I have had that scenario come up for me in a tournament game before.
When you activate wish claw talisman you tutor then give an opponent the talisman. In magic you do the things in operation of the ability. So you don't have to answer who gets the talisman until you are done tutoring.
I love how d background photo is Deathrite Shaman, cos alot of players didn't realized they can respond to DRS's first ability. It's not a mana ability n can be responded to
The big one I see with Dauthi is people thinking it matters which dauthi it goes under if theres multiple, but all that matters is if the exiled card is yours or not.
13:52 Are you sure about that? I found a reddit post claiming the opposite, referring to rule 605.1b. In that case Kinnans triggered ability is a mana ability so it cant be responded to? 605.1b A triggered ability is a mana ability if it meets all of the following criteria: it doesn’t require a target (see rule 115.6), it triggers from the resolution of an activated mana ability (see rule 605.1a) or from mana being added to a player’s mana pool, and it could add mana to a player’s mana pool when it resolves. In addition: 605.4a A triggered mana ability doesn’t go on the stack, so it can’t be targeted, countered, or otherwise responded to. Rather, it resolves immediately after the mana ability that triggered it, without waiting for priority.
Kinnan’s ability is not a mana ability, unless you’re referring to the mana generation and not the 7 mana activated ability. Kinnan’s activated ability will go on the stack, and then can be responded to. But the finding of a creature and it hitting the battlefield can not be responded to once priority is passed around the table after activation.
Great video! One mistake that comes in mind that I see sometimes is that someone tries to counter ninjutsu with a counterspell even though it's an activated ability! Same goes for the NEO channel lands. Have a good one!
If replacement effects apply to you or your stuff, you get to order them how you want. It's important with stuff like Torbran and Ojer Axonil(can first give +2 dmg and then set it to 4 rather than first set to 4 and then +2=6) or Dauthi Voidwalker and Stone of Erech(you can have the card be just exiled rather than be exiled under Dauthi so that they can't play it).
On cast of nevermore can I name a card, then when it enters the battlefield name the card that I want to actually use or is that cheating… same for any of these like the clone… can I put out a dummy name since it’s not actually on the stack to slip counterspells
You can name a card when you cast Nevermore. However, if all your opponents decide to let it resolve, that will be your decision made, not allowed to name a different card. This is because you're proposing a shortcut to the point when Nevermore has resolved and you would choose a card name. If you name a card and somebody responds to the cast of Nevermore, you will be able to choose a new card name as it enters.
I don't think it's wrong the red blast the thoracle in the stack instead of relying on your opponents to have the counterspell for the forbidden tutor. You can only react to one of these things if that's your only interaction, but the point is still solid
The main point for that is to give them the chance to pass to you if they're up first in priority, don't just jump ahead and say you want to respond before they pass.
You can cast deflecting swat on a spell or ability or permanent as long as there is a stack to interact with. It’s valid play but it’s just that your swat does nothing
Super, super tiny. But it gets under my skin; Vault has two triggers. Upkeep let's you pay mana to untap it. In draw step, if it is tapped, you lose 1 life. See a bunch of players lose life in upkeep (which normally doesn't matter).
This was (once again!) super helpful but I guess I have to rewatch a couple of times to grasp all the info 😂 A question to something u mentioned: Casting Thoracle, holding Prio and cast Consult. I never really got the point of this. In my head, it’s far safer to cast thoracle, see if it resolves, let the trigger enter the stack and hold Prio on the trigger to cast consult. This way u are not risking exiling you library just to get thassa countered and be left with nothing. Is there some advantage I‘m missing from holding Prio right on the Thassa cast?
That's the usual correct way, I may have used shorthand here but yes I mean holding priority on the trigger. Though sometimes other timing may make sense, mainly reverse thoracle, based on context.
Personally I think a common mistake is taking game actions that impact your opponents when you are dead on board . If an opponent is attacking you with lethal damage and removing one of the creatures does not save you, you should not use a removal spell on that creature.
Omfg do you know how many times i have not exiled my own eldritch evolution after resolution?? I have even used noxious revival to grab it back from the grave... Whoops.. sorry guys lol
