I really love how you are all about preference being at the heart of the hobby, and how the goal isnt just a deep sounding linear board with “thock”. I love your content, keep up the good work for as long as doing so is fun

Welcome to the hobby. My first aluminium custom was the Keychron Q2, it was way more expensive than the options we have nowadays like the Sugar65, Xinmeng A66, M67 etc. but nevertheless I do feel that these more expensive keyboards give a better feel when you touch the metal case. I sold it anyway at a decent price, and bought new ones, that's when I realized I'm going down this rabbit hole...

Just got my first mechanical keyboard earlier this week (fully assembled Keychron V6 w/ knob). Sounds pretty good already (minus the spacebar), but I'm gonna have to see if I can make it sound more like this.

    • @discodiffusioner
      @discodiffusioner 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Trick for better sounding spacebar is putting some poster putty into the underside of it equally on both sides. It will deaden the sound completely. You can do this for any keys that seem excessively noisy or have the wrong "ring" to them when typing. I'm curious what an entire keycap set deadened with poster putty would sound like.

This is just my assumption for why there are slot cuts in the case. But I think the slot cuts is to balance the weight from the battery on the opposite side. I'm assuming that the battery is lighter than the metal of the case.

After going way down the rabbithole that is mechanical key contraptions to the very extreme I can honestly say that the best sounding and the best feeling/functioning keyboard are rarely ever two in the same. Case in point *no pun intended* the most functional keyboard I have that keeps my RSI in check is the Feker Alice 80 67% split ergonomic keyboard with mostly Chinese clone parts feels the very best and sounds the worst. Just my 2 cents.

I have this built from it's barebones form and it is outstanding. I ended up using a mix of U4Ts and Epo Budgerigars for switches, and a set of Ghost Judges Apollo keycaps (stuck with the idea of the space theme). The result is is totally thocky, and very satisfying. It's a very heavy board, so those thinking this is good for travel, I'd look elsewhere, perhaps something like the Epomaker TH80SE with the purple keycaps and Budgerigar switches (I have this as well, and it's fantastic for travel purposes).

Wow, the case is aluminium and stock sounds awesome... but you're right, it all depends on the combination of all the parts!
My tiny bit of experience so far is that a LOT depends on the key caps; the material/production process that can make the keys harder or softer on the bottoming-out and return, and the height makes it sound more hollow or shallow.

I think the definition of leaf spring has evolved with time. I think the Thermal was defined as leaf spring but it was mostly cuts in the alu plate to create the spring effect. I think the Kohaku is a leaf spring similar to Thermal. Nowadays I believe Owlab Spring, Link65, AM, etc. are all what we generally consider leaf spring.

On preferences: Gotta be honest, I don't get the gasket mount, flex fad. It seems to me that gasket mounts might be great for typists trying to mitigate fatigue. However, with a plastic plate PCB with flex cuts, the gasket action and flex will vary across the board - the middle will be more flexible than the sides. Even having a gasket with something like an aluminum plate, will change how the keystrokes feel when the user presses different key combinations down because it will depress the board to different degrees. As a gamer, I don't want that kind of "play" in the action on the keyboard because gaming relies on extremely accurate timing. I need to know exactly when each keystroke will register and it needs to be really consistent across the keyboard and regardless of whether I am pressing W alone or sprint strafing by pressing W+A+Shift or some other common combo. This trend has made it really difficult to find non-gasket, aluminum plate keyboards within particular layout profiles and it is really annoying.

Good pop from the keycaps and super thocky. I was recently shopping for something relatively budget (or really budget), made of aluminium and I just couldn't cover all the bases. If one keyboard had one thing, it lacked in other places... Sometimes it was lack of knob (but I could stomach it if it had enough 'free' keys), or it was seemingly perfect, but without QMK/VIA support and / or lacking in layout (e.g. screen taking up space for mentioned keys in place of knob). This way I eliminated e.g. Chilkey ND75, Womier SK75 (no VIA, suboptimal layout / lack of knob), also it seems that many wireless boards just lack VIA support, so I ended up with Monsgeek M1 V3 (wired qmk) which has yet to arrive. I guess I might just have got another Keychron, but I wanted to try something else.
I'm spewing all of this as this board seems to have many advantages (well, the sound, dissaembly, price, gaskets), but on the other hand really lacking like in software, or quality (case easily getting scratched is like huge problem IMO)... Really even though there are so many good options nowadays, it's still kinda rough to just get something perfect as in having all the features you need. I would get keyboard that needs mods, but has the right set of features, over one souding / feeling good ootb, but lacking in one of these areas.

Honestly, I love this! I love keyboards that 'ping' but that's just me and my ADHD being weird. But what I find frustrating is finding a keyboard I love, it says "RGB" and on the site it shows alllll these color combos you can do but then, when you get it, there's like maybe six and no way to customize them. So that's my pet peeve. And as I don't have the hip new Apple iPhone (can't afford it), I'm stuck using a Walmart special $100ish Android which can barely handle Facebook and recently, due to 'lack of storage space' (wait wut), stopped updating even that x'D So know I can do this, at the bare minimum, is a relief!

You should make a video a video about Epomaker x Aula 75 keyboard. I think it is a really good keyboard for its price range a truly a budget king.

It actually sounds pretty solid with no foams for a super budget alu board. I'd still rather spend a few more bucks and get a QK Neo, though, if I wanted a clacky build.
Also- Would be cool to see you do a Leobog Hi8 review!

The general similarity in between the shapes of keycaps makes me think there where only like ten different molds max for all keycaps worldwide. This one is the 'Keychron shape', to me .. but maybe they are just all clones.

Are there any good budget mechanical keyboards with a double height return key? Or do they all think we need a double width /| key?

I just got this keyboard and I love it. Can you recommend a shine through keycaps? The keycaps are good, but I worked in the dark a lot and not having shine through keycaps is difficult for me. Thank you.

If you had to get a sk71 or galaxy80, which one would you prefer? Looking at these two as the options as I prefer black keyboards but the black sk71 has some issues of getting dirty

The keycaps profile is actually XVX/ MDA profile. I know this becausw i used to have the same keycaps with the same color and same profile height
