tbh, I bought the Zoom 75 two months ago thanks to your videos and I kinda feel like buying an expensive keyboard might be worth it, but only in a few cases and definitely depending on where you live. I haven't watched the full video yet, but let me explain. I live in Italy, so importing the Zoom 75 (which was in stock btw, so I got it like three weeks after I placed the order) meant 150 euros of total shipping costs just for the keyboard itself, split into shipping, taxes and customs processing fees. The keyboard was 229$ and the keycaps I got were the WS PBT from Meletrix itself (it saved me quite a lot in shipping, having them both in one order) at 82$. After that, I needed switches and the tools, being my first custom mechanical keyboard. The switches, as per your recommendation, were Wuque's Morandi and they cost me 45.15$ with 26$ of shipping on top, while the tools I bought from Kinetic Labs were 63.95$, 18.87$ of shipping and 35 euros of taxes and fees.
In total, a Zoom 75 build cost me about 600 euros. That's right, guys. Yes you read that correctly. The video Hipyo made about this keyboard? "It's a super nice budget keyboard to start!" and many others said the same. Fun fact, all of them were Americans and all of them advertised the keyboard as a 200-250$ keyboard. That's fair, but the full picture is very much different if you live in Europe. I felt like commenting to let you guys know, maybe someone is considering buying a custom keyboard and expects a mild price tag for a mid-range keyboard and would therefore get an unpleasant surprise down the road.
Going back to high-end keyboards, they don't really make sense to me because the Freya would probably be close to 1k in Italy, or at minimum 800. I was curious because when I got the email the black edition got me kinda excited if you know what I mean, but yh that is just too much for a keyboard imo. If I were a full-time home-office kinda developer I'd consider it for sure, but there are plenty better ways to spend one k for me, like maybe saving it to up my budget for a nice watch I can actually wear or something. That said, the Zoom 75 has opened my eyes to the keyboard world and it's amazing. The feeling I get when typing is something else and I now understand why this hobby became so popular, given everyone on this planet uses a computer daily. If I had a ton of money, I probably wouldn't need to type on a keyboard all day, but it'd be nice to have a very high quality custom. Not having a ton of money and having experienced the difference between what youtubers based in the US say and what I actually have to spend makes me wary about this stuff tho. Well, best of luck to anyone picking up the hobby, hope you have deep pockets!

you're 100% right which is the reason i stuck with the sk71 from womier i piad 120$ for it with express shipping i also bought HMX Clouds switches fairly cheap at around 34$ and then i bought some keycaps from epomaker for 40$ so i spend 194$ and personally i think this is as premium as i'm willing to go to build my own.

I wanted to ask a question since you seem to know. I also live in Italy and I'm looking to buy my first keyboard. I'm looking at the Neo 80. To ship that keyboard plus some vertex v1 switches costs around 240 euro with shipping. the keycaps would also cost 125 euro with shipping. Do you think this is a good price to pay for this keyboard?

    • @jack_2612
      @jack_2612 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sebastianbelcredi655 I’ll be honest, I don’t know this particular keyboard. however I googled it and it looks quite nice, so if the build quality is good (I suppose you have already watched reviews of it) I’d say the price is definitely a nice deal. Keep in mind that, at least for the first keyboard, you should check if it has VIA compatibility and RGB. If it doesn’t, I would suggest looking elsewhere. The keycaps are also decently priced; they are on the most expensive side so I suppose they are gmk or have artisan special keys, but that’s a good choice. If you got cheaper switches to save on the budget, trade a few euros off of the keycaps and into the switches though. Switches are definitely more important for the sound and feel of the keyboard. As for the tools, like the lube for example, maybe try the keyboard first, if both the switches and the stabilizers are factory lubed. If they’re not, you absolutely need to get Krytox and a full kit (keycap puller, switch puller, brushes and the Krytox itself, and finally a switch opener) and it’s not that cheap, cost me 100 from Kinetic Labs. You might save quite a lot of money buying some traditional lube and cheaper tools on amazon or in a local shop (in ferramente magari). Enjoy your first build when you get to it, it’s a lot of trial and error and it’s awesome!

One thing to keep in mind is the amount of saved time and guarantee that it all works for the price. I just built myself a luxury board from buying everything and assembling it all myself, lubing the switches myself too. It was time consuming, difficult, as a first time I fucked up a bit, had to spend extra money on getting all the tools and products required to even attempt modding a keyboard. Honestly, not a terrible price. I think I've spent around 350-400 on the keyboard parts themselves + the things required = 500 and that doesn't even account for accessories and new keycaps soon since I'm not satisfied with all the sets I have but damn does it sound, look and feel heavenly. It's only my 3rd board, first I mess with besides the keycaps and I consider this my nearly endgame one. The market doesn't seem to be ready for my endgame so I'll just wait for some years.

@coughfee_beans what kind of switches and kit did you decide on? did you include any luxury accessories, like either of the knobs in the video? Nicely done on your first build. It can be a real bitch sometimes. I always get nervous I'm going to f something up and just feel like leaving it to the manufacturer means it'll be in better hands than my own (even though I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself). Cheers.

What lesson this video teaches me is that this hobby has diminishing returns in a lot of aspects. I’m chillin with my ~$35 custom keyboard I built from taobao which is (in my opinion) about 90% as good sounding/feeling as this one. Of course, it doesn’t have the feature set of this crazy expensive keyboard, but I don’t need a screen or a knob on my keyboard.

I've already ordered a copy with the flex cut PCB, so here's a question: what's wrong with it? Maybe just preference? I can still modify my order before the GB ends, so let me know! ;)

It's all preference! I prefer the flex to come from the gaskets rather than the PCB/plate

Can you please review the RedMagic 96% keyboard.
It's got a full size 0 and Enter key on the numpad (which I use often with my mouse hand).
I wanna know if it's worth the buy and can be customized for tactile but quite typing and casual gaming. ❤

@hipyotech would love your help/insight. Looking to upgrade my current mechanical razor keyboard with a custom board. I have an irrational love for the Aluvia Aluminum Key set. Since that’s going to cost me a pretty penny I thought making sure the rest of the board is up to the quality of the keys would be great but have lots to learn. Let me know if there’s a way to connect!

TLDR; I discuss my exp buying a luxury keeb (QK100 for my budget), and why I’m happy with my choice over the Zoom75. I have other keeb projects on the go, so if I buy another *luxury keeb*, it won’t be until late 2024 or next year… unless my friends ask me to build one for them.
So I bought my first ‘luxury’ keyboard last summer during the qk100 groupbuy. I had to make the tough call between the zoom75 + zoompad and the qk100, because both groupbuys were happening at the same time and I couldn’t afford both. Before the qk100, I had modded my first keeb only 4-5 months prior (a keychron v5), and just finished building my kbdcraft addams with the southpaw numpad variation. so the next keeb was a BIG jump for me in price & skill - I needed to feel confident I could build it, mod it, and get the most return on it without buying anything extra.
Ultimately, I needed a numpad and buying the Zoompad separately would have cost me too much in money & desk space.
I’m happy with my decision to buy the qk100 because I feel like I have a great base to mod & upgrade over the years. It’s my daily driver for work, was a good price, has a fun LED screen (which I’ve loaded with silly gifs that I switch based on my mood), had a helpful build guide, and has all of the keys/functionality I needed. I do miss the per-key RGB exp I’d get from both my keychron & kit addams though, so that’s a priority for whichever keeb I buy next.
I am still considering whether I’ll transition to an 80% layout at some point for my main home setup. It will require buying a separate numpad for work, but then I can store it away when I’m gaming. But in the meantime, I’m modding my keychron v5 to be my go-to silent keeb for on-the-go work, so I think I have enough going on for now. 😂

Can't believe the number of issues you ran into for that price tag, and you still have a positive outlook on the board. If I'm getting a prototype that they "will fix going forward" I'm spending prototype money, not no DAMN $440. Pretty scummy if you ask me. Especially if you received this board for free, I would have ripped it a new one

I love the look of the Freya, but for me personally, the knob with the screen makes it a hard "no." I just don't really have a use for that and I feel it will make the keyboard look really dated in 10-20 years. If they made a cheaper version without the screen/knob, I'd be really interested, especially since I'm still in budget land and it would be more of a true step up from my current set up.

I feel like diminishing returns hit pretty hard after the ~$150 range for just the case, but switches (especially tactiles), keycaps and mayyyyybe the tech such as a screen, etc. tend to have justification for their price tags. Aluminum is aluminum, and there's only so high a grade you can go before it simply doesn't matter, but it takes a lot to make a good switch, and a lot to make a good design, so of course they're gonna cost you.
Sure, you hit diminishing returns on linears almost immediately, but there's SO much room for error and preference in tactiles, it makes it impossible to get it "right" for everyone like you more or less can with linears. The problem with tech (other than wireless, and VIA support) is that it's almost always just flashyness and that's about it. RGB is fun and all, but a screen that maybe displays your CPU temp or whatever.. it's never ACTUALLY helpful, it's just there for fun, which isn't a bad thing, just not worth the price for me.

Im considering to build a 250 dollar keyboard should I do it:
    Case: V1 barebone
    Switch: Gateron silent black v2
    And some black key caps
    Is it worth it ?
And I’m from Denmark so I don’t have as many choices as you Americans
