Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches a little about the area and how it gets its name.

It's sad but this is the kind of appropriation that makes bad blood between our tribes . The Dine' have not been living there forever they came into the area only maybe 1000 years ago from the northern. The land they are claiming belongs to the Hopi people otherwise why are there NO ancient Navajo dwellings only Hisat Sinom(Hopi Ancestors) CLIFF HOUSES. Sad even young dine' don't know their true history.
I went there once. I drove by myself for hours and got there late in the day. It was an amazing and awesome place full of spirit. There were a couple of people there but that’s all. A guy asked if I wanted to take a tour but it was too late and I just wanted to sit there quietly. As I did, I saw a coyote moving through the land up into some rocks, moving like a shadow. I took a photo and even knowing the coyote was there I had to look hard to find it. I asked myself why I drove so many hours just to be there for such a short time but this video reminds me that I am so glad I did!!
It sounds like a great experience.
Back in '79, I was fortunate enough to go there and camp with my boyfriend. We saw a full October moon rise right between the 'thumbs' of the male and female 'mittens'. The beauty and energy will be clear in my mind forever. Thank you for letting us stay for that one magical night.
The Dine land is sacred. Even as a child I felt time stop when I entered Dine land. ❤

I love Monument Valley. There is something timeless about it. You can feel the greatness of creation and the vastness of time. Our human lives are so small and humble when you stand among nature that has been here for millennia. 💗
I'm learning about your culture. I have always been drawn to the history of it && the stories. I loved listening to my grandmother's stories too.. I live in East Tennessee near the Appalachian trail & the Nolichucky River runs thru. It is beautiful here as well. I remember seeing where you are here in a movie when I was young. Eye am wondering if those monuments were once large Tree Trunks like so many around the world like Diamond Head on Oahu and Devil's Tower in Wyoming with a lot of silica

Wow! Monument valley is so beautiful.
Monument Valley is a very spiritual place for me. I spent 2 out of the 3 weeks I was over in the USA saying hello to all the rock and stone people that I saw. Faces in the rocks, even in the dust whirls. So many faces, all smiling. I just kept waving and smiling and saying hello. It was very special and the connection I feel to the land in Western USA is almost holy... I felt like I had come home. I do not mean that to be insulting.... This is my truth and I am speaking it xx
There is a deep genetic link between Native Americans and Europeans bc the same ancient peoples who populated Europe and Asia crossed into North America.

Nature is beautiful but can be scary at times if you don't know how to behave and survive...
I wonder how Diné people could survive in such harsh conditions. It blows my mind...No running water, no fertile soil to plant crops...Living on large, desolate land...You also need roof over your head....Hard to comprehend. Knowing that the government in those days pushed Native Americans to live in such places is....just beyond words can describe...
I bow down to all Diné people.

I was there four years ago. One of the most beautiful, haunting places I've ever been. The Navajo people are hospitable hosts, and their tour to see this amazing place is a must-do. I love the Grand Canyon, but Monument Valley is an incredibly special place and I can't wait to go back.

I grew up in eastern New Mexico and spent many years in Clayton, nearly on the foot of Rabbit Ear mountain. I feel a connection to the plains and the mountains and canyons there. I even climbed to the top of Rabbit Ear mountain when I was a younger man. I am truly moved by Mother Earth. I hope someday I can truly visit the Navajo Nation and learn more and make a connection with Mother Earth and the people there before I go to the next world. Thank you for this teaching.

Greetings Wally,thank-you for speaking and sharing your knowledge.your manners and teachings are very heart warming and comforting. I visited this area in 1995 with a friend of mine and stayed in a hogan dwelling facing monument valley. Truly a spiritual experience. We were welcomed by a navajo family and stayed for three nights. We apparently the first white females allowed to stay in one of these sa red dwellings as permission had only been passed recently by the families medicine man. We also had the opportunity to witness a cleansing ceremony for the families eldest son whom was joining the forces. We were lulled to sleep that evening with the sounds of drumming and male voices chanting,truly an amazing experience. The next morning we were invited into the teepee to speak and share a meal with the family and all of their relatives, we were made to feel very welcome. During our stay we also enjoyed many opportunities to speak with the families grandfather elder,his story telling and wisdom resonates with me even to this day. Grandfather was a wind talker during ww2 his experiences and knowledge kept me always hanging on his every word. I will treasure my time spent in the valley and carry that family in my heart and thoughts with highest regard,I consider them my family. I hope to one day return again.
I lived 6 months in mid-north New Mexico. Near Santa Fe, Espanola, Los Alamos. I felt if the land and I had a “connection.” I think it may be a “spiritual homeland” of some sort for me.

I was very fortunate to have a very good new friend invite me on a backpacking trip back in September 2019. He had just helped me get into backpacking and had already had arrangements made to backpack to Keet Seel out of Navajo National Monument. I was not aware of Keet Seel or Betatakin before this invite, and had never experienced the surrounding area either. It is an incredible area. I'm so thankful for that very rare experience and the really challenging hike. A very nice young ranger lady in her first year at Keet Seel guided us around the complex. Keltyana (sp?) was her name. I would love to get back out to that area. I now try to explain to others why referring to such places as "ruins" is not correct. These places are still of use, and are significant.

For some reason East of Flagstaff and Winslow Arizona region resonates with me. The stars in the night and the earth landscape.
