Do Native Americans (Navajo) Worship Mother Earth?

  • In this week's video Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches about a commonly misunderstanding.
While our traditional teachings say to give thanks for Mother Earth, the Rain, the Atmosphere, and the Sun...
We do not pray to or worship these.
Part of the condition of keeping the language was that we would speak on behalf of these to the Holy People.
The name for the creator that is worshiped is not a name but rather a description.
This is what causes some of the issues and misunderstanding.
    Enjoy the video.

As a Lakota I believe everything has a soul, everything needs to be taken care of. And everything, animals, plants, habitats and nature needs to be protected. Seeing deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and seeing litter in the river. Breaks my heart. Did you know people just dump their trash into the river without consequences? The planet needs our love. She is our mother.

You can go to the rez and hear them speak. I believe they used to accept questions from people. Or at least last time I lived in az they did.
Just do not ask about skinwalker or witches. That will shut down any and all speaking. Bad news.

I took my kids camping in the Utah west desert where we camped in a wind storm, then a blizzard came in the night. Then the clouds cleared and there were stars and drone swarms, and coyotes howling. It was magical for me and my kids.

A wonderful explanation. Thank you Grandfather Wally. Blessings upon you and all the Diné. Some folk get all upset when they hear the title God slandered. And rightfully so. But God is a title, not the name of the Supreme Deity. I have long believed that our spirit is manifest as our breath. When we pass from this life, we exhale, and our spirit leaves us, and returns to the Creator who gives it to us. And certainly, we cannot exist without our Mother Earth. Just as we should honor the woman who gave us birth, we should honor the Earth from whom all life springs. At least, this is my understanding, as limited as it is.

Sooner or later, We all will receive the recompense of our thoughts and actions from The Most High. Otherwise there is no justice. Just look around you at the mess people have made by each going their own selfish and egotistical way. This is not without consequences. These will fall especially hard on those who remain fixated in their own blindness. Wake up and turn back in repentance to God, the Creator and Sustainer of all.

i have cried so many times for what I have seen happening. I have been trying to help every bird, frog, even mosquitoes. I feed as many as i can.
There are no more clouds of gnats, there are no more flocks of songbirds on the wires. I am broken. But many animals come here, All are welcome.

Also. I wondered if all the creatures we have killed for convenience are walking here now on two legs. Can humans have come here from animal form? That is why they can't understand? Is it our fate to watch what we have reaped?
In truth, my tears are for the earth, the waters the trees everything that people selfishly destroyed. I know my part. I wish I didn't. Some times the pain is overwhelming. I have cried for 60 years. Why was I a witness? Got no clue. I reach out with my hand and my heart. We refuse to learn. We lie. We believe we can take life as if it was our right. We poison the land and air and the water. The woods here feel weak. they struggle to live. They want to live. I cry because i can't help them. My mouth can't speak now. I think I am supposed to watch and accept. I am caught and I can not look away. It's scary, but I will do it until told otherwise. I am ready, now.
    Thank you so much.
