I believe there is DEEP HEALING that we as Americans need to go through and it starts with the different people groups who were here from the beginning. THANK YOU Peter for being bold and courageous seeking wisdom and insight and sharing with the world.

As a Native American living in North Carolina all my life, we didn't grow up on a reservation, just a small town in one of the poorest counties in the state. I absolutely love how you visit various tribes and the reservations. I love seeing how similar/different life is growing up on a reservation verses a town.

I’m Choctaw from Louisiana and what’s interesting is most tribes east of the Mississippi River don’t have your traditional Reservation like the tribes out west. Most of the land here was claimed by the white man so we either lived with them or had to buy the land back for ourselves. Reservations were implemented to appease us. But it ended up doing a lot of harm as well. Cause the land is super poor and resource inefficient.
I lived there in Montana among the Salish Kootenai tribe in my teens to early 20 and I'm Dine (Navajo Tribe). I was treated like family and I'll never forget the wonderful memories I have there, such giving, friendly people.
Native American people from the nationalist political ideology visited Ireland in many republican funerals in the 80s..... highly respected here in Ireland
I live 15 miles from the Flathead Reservation. I have lived by and traveled through the reservation for the last 40 years and I am sorry to say I haven’t tried to learn more about it. I see it differently now as a more beautiful, more spiritual and cherished place for the native people. Thank you for bringing the gift of awareness to your viewers. I will never see the Flathead Reservation the same again.❤
Yeah well the next time you kill a deer maybe you should take it to an elder as a gift and stop feeding off their land for free. The fact you lived there so long and haven’t tried to respect them says a lot Change that

There is alot more to her job but these videos are helping her so much to understand more about the people and there culture. Do they understand that home ownership is a responsibility, not a right? Give an indian a taxpayer paid house and he trashes it in less than one year. Who will do the upkeep?
I just recently discovered your channel & this series on Indigenous reservations is fascinating. Good for you for bringing to light the conditions that exist on the reservations.
I don't think most people realize how many native tribes there actually are. They only know what they have seen in movies. These are a proud, dignified people and learning that non-natives come to their land and leave trash behind is so disrespectful. Thank you Peter for an interesting look into the lives of this noble culture.
Yes, it is terrible. We have the same in beautiful areas of the UK countryside particularly during covid - too many people and just dumping things I could never afford just to leave behind like a tent!
My friend Nicky was so proud to be half Irish & half Blackfeet, she had two bumper stickers, FBI: Full Blooded Indian and FBI: Full Blooded Irish. I laughed and told her she can't be full blooded of two things, but she said that's the magic of that combination. She passed away a few years ago, but your comment made me think of her. By the way, it is a very, very common cultural mix here, the Irish and the native people in the Western USA got along very, very well. And, btw, Butte MT is, by population percentage, the most Irish place in America. Both the native & non-native people here stand in solidarity with Ireland too, btw, you all have some deep history with English speaking people trying to wipe you out, too.
While living in Montana in the 90s I met different tribes that live there, Salish Kootenai, Blackfeet, and Bannock. I had so much fun living among them and I'm from the Dine tribe we come from Northern Arizona.

I went with my Granddaughter to this reservation last Thanksgiving to meet her Yiah (great grandmother), grandfather, uncles, and to see where her people came from. She is part Salish and part Shoshone so she has a lot of family on the Flathead and Wind River. I will say when we drove up the hill and the Mission Mountains came into view on our way to see the Buffalo, it took my breath away. Gorgeous. It's a beautiful land.
Rest in assurance they are beautiful people and will love her as their own. I went to school there and instructed for over 25 years now I am home on my reservation. My grandmother said remember you are a guest. Your home is here. Her situation is different because she is in marriage and to a fine Salish man. Beautiful!!!

Has anyone else noticed the common denominator with all the different Native American Tribes/Nations? They all work come together and work together to feed and care for the elderly, the widows, the sick..................they care for and take care of each other!!! Even the ones in Alaska on the island!!! I have always had the utmost respect for all Native Americans. How so many families can come together and live as one when it comes to caring for their community. The RESPECT for the lands and water ways! How they hunt only for food and have always been the caretakers of the earth and wildlife has always made me want to learn more about them. They have so much more knowledge in caring for and healing the land than anyone I have ever known. I know their knowledge has been passed down through many generations, and I am so glad that they continue to use that knowledge and pass it on to the next generation. I wonder how many people have ever thought of how they were able to not only survive but to prosper with the very minimalistic of tools and sheer brute strength through all seasons and catastrophic events. I wish there were something I could do to help them get their land, I think our country owes them that (and more).
"They all work come together and work together to feed and care for the elderly, the widows, the sick..................they care for and take care of each other!!! " In Alaska the tribes also have the authority to banish members from their community or village for a period of years for misbehavior such as drunkenness, fighting, theft or other offenses.

Very interesting. I lived in SW Montana for 5 years and used to love going to the Pow Wow in Missoula. Yes, they let non-natives come watch. The whole tribal dynamic in the United States is bewildering. You have tribes like the Seminoles in Florida who have a huge number of businesspersons where the Blackfoot and Pine Ridge reservations are as poor as Appalachia. (Hint for another series, poor Appalachia folks) Various tribes have fared much differently depending on tribal culture, geography and education. But one thing that MUST happen is the US Government needs to give the Natives back their land and stop being landlords. No, the reservation does not belong to the Indians, the US Government owns it and keeps the Natives there like serfs.
We conquered it fair and square, and that thinking literally never stops. Someone always got there first and there’s only so far you can come back. Do we give it all back to the Siberians? The Africans? The problem with native tribes are the fact they rely so heavily on the government, and the ones that don’t learn to sustain themselves and statistically are much better off.
@@xaviercopeland2789 You're somewhat correct. To return it to a tribe one must first decide which tribe to return it to. The tribes were fighting, conquering, enslaving and occupying each other for centuries before Europeans arrived. The Cheyanne were feared by other tribes and displaced many other tribes. The Blackfoot nation did the same to its neighbors. However, the wider question remains; Why is the federal government acting as landlord to these reservations? Let them buy their land back and let them live the American dream.
To whomever pays taxes on their property. You don't own those things You're renting it. Also I will not allow America try to necromonger me out of my ways.

My white great grandfather was raised by Chief Moise on the flathead reservation, and he is actually buried in Phillipsburg. As an amateur genealogist for 25 years, I find researching the history of this tribe fascinating. I don’t know if I have any native DNA, but I have connected to natives in my family tree. Btw, my mother was a traditional dancer, and I traveled with her to a few powwows. After her passing, I was the fortunate one who inherit her, traditional handmaid regalia. Her name was “Wandering Star”. I have a great love for this community. Very informative interview, thank you for telling this story. 🙏🏼👏🏼🥰
This couple is so remarkable, intelligent, kind and genuine. Even when speaking of the historical traumas, the governmental manipulation, the injustices...they were so humble and graceful. This type of education is what the world needs most. The indigenous people of this land need and deserve advocacy and education and they're not getting it. You guys should start a training course on how to go about getting land, getting land back that was deceitfully taken, economics within the tribal communities, stopping the sale of it to non-native people or atleast making it attainable to them first. We are all visitors to these lands, except the indigenous people. They deserve our utmost respect and our support.
This makes me very sad .reminds me of my uncle's story basically he was drafted into WW2 at the age of 16 out there near a base in the Pacific NW he met an Indian girl name Trevi she was in a boarding school nearby she iwas a band of Sue from a reservation in Montana soon after that they married and he brought her to Az they had 7 kids but then he started suffering from pstd due to a bomb that hit the ship he was in WW2.. that earned him the 💜 he was not able to function normally anymore they separated when the children were very small he was put in a mental hospital she turned to drinking and died the oldest daughter that was sill very young at the time toook care of her sibling the best she knew they all sort of grew up went their separate ways as u can probably imagine under these circumstances did not fare to well they found each other again when they were older and went to get to know the reservation where their mother was born
Sad story. One thing you may want to clarify is you stated he was "drafted" into the service at 16. The draft was only applicable & the military accessible to those who had reached the age of 18. During that period there were young men under 18 who could join the military, but they had to get express permission from a parent ot guardian. There are also stories where they would lie about their age & come up with some kind of phoney documentation to support their claim of being 18. But no one under the age of 18 was ever drafted into service. And also, if they were 18 but had not yet graduated from high school then they couldn't be drafted either. In other words, if they had turned 18 but were in their senior year of high school, they weren't able to be drafted until the end of the school year. They weren't taking kids out of school.
@@leskobrandon691 very nice of you to put that so politely. To me, it makes me think this person is a bit of a liar and calls her entire story into question.
The U.S. gov. had strict regulations on the draft age during WW2. They did not draft 16 yr olds. However, it was fairly common among NA's like my own father, living on the Flathead Rez, to forge their birth certificates to join the military-- not just to fight against the enemy, but just to get off the Rez. This is what my father told me, -- and why. 🔥😘

I went with my Granddaughter to this reservation last Thanksgiving to meet her Yiah (great grandmother), grandfather, uncles, and to see where her people came from. She is part Salish and part Shoshone so she has a lot of family on the Flathead and Wind River.
In Alaska the tribes also have the authority to banish members from their community or village for a period of years for misbehavior such as drunkenness, fighting, theft or other offenses.

I went to that Pow Wow a lot too and the one in Pablo. Couple times to the Stevensville one too. Indian Tacos up there are Da Bomb!
Hypercapitalism will destroy the tribes.
To whomever pays taxes on their property. You don't own those things You're renting it. Also I will not allow America try to necromonger me out of my ways.

She didn't bother me , she seemed cringeworthy for sure .she just was passing through , I didn't think she was evil .
I said the samething when she appeared such a weird but interesting coincidence.
She is oblivious, as we all are, before watching this video. We have the luxury of viewing both sides of this conversation, where as, she seemed ecstatic to just be soaking up the beauty of the place. Maybe as she becomes familiarized with the culture of the area and inhabitants, she’ll become more enlightened, as we all will be, as we grow to empathize with those around us and those that came before us. Blessings and good fortunes to all and may we all experience growth, well being and peace with harmony in our future endeavors!
The sooner more people can understand that we are all human beings first and that we come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. It takes all of us to make the world go around. I was born and raised in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana. Love the Native History. Very much of what makes Montana. Thank you for making this video.
My dad grew up in the Bitterroot Valley. I love Montana and just finished a book my grandmother wrote about growing up on Tenderfoot.
@@ginasmitasin479 wow! Great history not to mention an amazing family heirloom!
@@AppreciatingSimplicity08 Yes, it was interesting getting to see how she grew up. I was never quite sure what to make of her relationship with my dad which seemed tension filled but I suspect it was that there were a LOT of us (8) and he wanted to make a good impression as we only saw her every other year. Her description of the area was delicious.
I have lived my whole life in the bitterroot since the age of 5 when I moved here from 4 hours north. Western Montana is my home and I respect the Native culture .
I wish this video had much more viewers!
More Native American footage please! Especially with Thanksgiving in the US next week. Good stuff.

I am addicted to Peter's channel. I love how open minded and non-judgemental Peter is. his openness seems to make everyone comfortable enough to open up to him.
Glad your doing a story on this Peter. I find it very interesting to understand Native American people better and especially how they feel about what was done to them, and how they cope today.

@@woodspirit98 The nation of the USA mostly during the 1800's committed heinous acts of physical and paper genocide on all indigenous peoples in it's territories. Their Indian removal policies inspired Hitler to apply similar policies in Nazi Germany
Love this new series. We lived for years and years just a mile from the Tohono O'odham Nation Reservation in Southern Arizona. This series gives us more insight into their customs and current issues. For a while I did work with a women from that reservation. Sometimes I would give her rides out that way when she needed that help.
He should come to sells it’s a real humbling experience and ik people would love to welcome him

Great video! Pend d'Oreilles Salish is one of my favorite languages of all time, so many interesting words and phonological patterns that you don't see hardly anywhere else in the world
peter, so glad to see you doing a series on those who lived in this land first and now are totally overlooked by everyone, it seems. hope you get to south dakota, pine ridge, rose bud, etc.
The clovis people were here before the Indians and asians before them.

My boyfriend grew up on this reservation. Here to learn more about his experiences in life. Thank you so much.
My grandmother fled Pine Ridge as soon as she could, after surviving Indian boarding schools and TB at the Sioux San. Reservations are essentially Concentration camps the prisoners adapted and survived to this day.
Beautiful reservation'. I was impressed with the couple and their dedication to their people. Thanks!❤
Love to learn about other tribes! Thanks Peter for sharing! 👍

Greatly appreciated, Peter and hosts. So much to learn. Cheers from the Netherlands.
Your way of learning the other cultures and about the lands' history through so many different people is what I respect a lot. This one is definitely one of my most favorite videos.

Thank you for this representation in such respectful and unbiased dialogue . Much love, for this work you do Peter.
I am honored to have Aunties from the Sèlís and Kootenai. Even though I am descended from a Norwegian Sämmi refugee who homesteaded in the valley my Aunties just let me learn with all the other kids; they never held my heritage against me. I wish our culture and legal system would stop persecuting and punishing the Earth’s Founding Fathers and Mothers. I am sorry, brothers and sisters. My history (my ancestors’ history) is my shame. 😢
Awesome video! Thank you Patrick and Regina and to Peter! Made me happy to see you guys speaking truth the power!
That's my favorite part of Montana. From Flathead lake up to the Canadian border. I went up there last year and it was like I made a spiritual pilgrimage there. 2200 mile drive from Alabama and it was worth every cent of gas money I spent there and back.
You're talking about my childhood right there! Grew up in Kalispell, attended Flathead HS, had the Mission Range as my front yard and playground. Summers on the lake with the clearest water on the planet and winters on the slopes, Big Mountain was like a big brother. Glad you appreciate the beauty!!

My family still has a homestead in Lewiston MT. Live in Spokane now and love Montana. I’m so sorry people are not respecting your land. Thank you again Peter showing us this beautiful land and it’s people.
It's not their land.
Very very very very very very very cool that you're on this Native People's kick lately.
Thank you so much to this couple who have educated me on the past and current struggles of their tribe.
So excited this series is starting!!
Awesome content. Looking forward to your next stop. Keep shining that light into the darkness.
Partied on that Rez a lot back in my younger days.
Ohhhh innit
Beautiful land, the Mission Mountains are just amazing! My favorite mountain range to just look at. They just start an go straight up! No foothills, they are a sight to behold.
Thank you for teaching about the different tribal lives across America ❤
This is beautiful and so educational
Hello how are you doing? Hope everything is going well?
They talk about education, and it's necessary, but trade schools and skills based learning are also needed to help (re)build these communities .
I'm sorry your cousins and aunt and uncle suffered so much, Beatriz. May the Lord heal them completely.
@@leskobrandon691 hmmm I wouldn’t be supposed if the government was convincing kids to forge their docs and join. I’ve heard of recruiters doing way worse!
Peter, you are doing some outstanding journalism. Stories of native americans needs to be told and in their words, with their emotions.

The Indian School in Phoenix was still operating up to the end of the '70s. Now it is an historical park right in Phoenix. I used to go to it often when I lived there. It was created to preserve the history of the native experience in America. it is a very spiritual place.
