What’s the movie about?
After winning the championship, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) continues his training with his mentor. When Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) receives the news that his father is dying he decides to go back to Japan, and Daniel (Ralph Macchio) follows him there.

I like how Sato immediately accepted the outcome of the bet when Daniel broke the ice. No bitching and no complaining. It shows the difference between his personality and his nephew's personality. But I'm pretty sure on the inside he was mad as hell.
It pretty much showed that sato truly was honorable through his actions unlike his nephew who said he was honorable but always cheated people and blamed them for finding out.

I understand it exists and it may be popular but he lived in the US with big Chinatown and little to no authentic Japanese food for years. When you go home after many years you long for food of your home place. It's possible of course just bad timing.
Actually Okinawa has pretty good Chinese food because Okinawa has been the crossroads between Japan and China for centuries.

The fact that a majority of these actors (at least those who are still alive, which excludes Pat Morita) are still actively acting today, is astounding. I love all those Japanese Friends, Frienemies, and Acquaintances that Daniel LaRusso made there in Japan, so glorious to have this rewind memory used 35 years later in the Cobra Kai Netflix series

What’s funny is Daniel’s initial reaction to having Miyagi bet on him. He just explained to the girl why the first dude wasn’t able to break the ice, and yet despite that, one of the first excuses he gives Miyagi is that first dude couldn’t do it so neither can he. That’s what fear does, man. Makes you give excuses that even you know are bs.
Dude coming up in the MMA world there's so much of this to deal with. Every time I've fought it ended up being way easier and more enjoyable than I anticipate, but in the moments leading up to it your mind comes at you with all kinds of fear and doubts.

i love how Sato was staring at Daniel as he was breathing. A quick glance to the ground and at his stance confirms the kid just might be able to do it. When Daniel does break all six, the disappointment isn't so much that he lost a bet and that Miyagi's student was able to do it, but also that HIS student Chozen would never have been able to pull it off. Chozen didn't even believe it was possible and publicly embarrassed him AGAIN.

I was in high school and taking Karate lessons when the first two films came out.
The character of Miyagi was based on a real man who also taught in my home town. He had a couple of old vehicles like Miyagi does. He trained his students in ways similar to the movie but not so "Hollywoodized". He was the highest ranking master of his school (Goju Ryu) in the Western hemisphere. Old men from Japan and Okinawa would come to train with him. I never got to meet the man but he was a friend of my Karate teacher.

I was training from 6 to 10 yro in late 90’s and used to rent and watch these movies all the time. Then i turned 14 and got into kickboxing, powerlifting and calisthenics and I realized how naive i was 😂, but still i get really nostalgic watching those movies.

I loved that everyone against Daniel was laughing. Sato wasn't, though. He knew what was up. That's why he had no reaction. He knew what was coming when he saw the lead up. I think he also knew right then that Daniel was a better student than his own, whom he couldn't keep from being stupid and reckless. It was like Miyagi one upped him again, and wasn't even trying to.

In case if anyone is wondering, $600 back in 1985 is worth roughly $1700 today.
0:12 that is very true, a large portion of martial arts involves knowing what you are doing, what to do, and when to do it, as well as requiring an immense amount of focus if you are to become a truly incredible martial artist
To those who laugh that Daniel first said it was all about the mind, not the strength and that a few seconds, he argued he wasn’t strong enough : the real problem was not Daniel’s illogical arguments, it was that he didn’t believe enough in himself, he didn’t think he has the strength of mind needed. But Miyagi did it for him. Miyagi believed in him and helped him push away his own limits.
In my opinion, that’s what this scene is really about (that, and comparing Miyagi and Sato’s methods of training and rivalry that goes on with their students)

watching this again - its a great sequel to the original (not going to even mention the third movie). It has a pretty good storyline while also advancing the development of the Miyagi and Daniel characters (not going to mention the third movie). It kept things fresh by giving you a lot of the stuff from the original - but then changing the country to keep it very interesting (not going to mention the third movie).

that's the sad reality of bullied people, it tends to come back over and over again in life it is a real phenomenon, revictimization. Often just the differences in comportments (ptsd and social coportments) triggered by the first episode of bullying trigger other waves of violence and harassment from different aggressors. Bullies target people who are in the margin because they are rarely protected by the herd.

@@k14michael actually, Sato and Miyagi loved the same woman (Yukie), Sato wanted to marry Yukie but she also liked Miyagi. So Sato challenged Miyagi to a fight to the death, but Miyagi didn't wanna fight so he fled to America the next day, hence Sato calling Miyagi a coward

Seeing these two as friends in Cobra Kai made my day. Mike Barnes coming back was great to see also. Hope they keep that series running.
Can only imagine what's going through Sato's mind seeing Daniel do the breathing technique. Here he is a master of a martial arts he learned with his best friend from a teacher who taught from a line of a family. That is something sacred. Obviously he didn't do that with Chozen, so to see Miyagi have that close bond with his student probably scared him cause he knew Daniel is someone special and probably absorbed everything from his teacher with reverence and respect and he knew Daniel would do it.
So much just from a look is incredible. I miss older movies for this.
I love how in movies when ppl place bets they just willingly give tons of money to a stranger in the crowd and he somehow takes all this money and remembers who and how much they bet 😂. In real life that would be a come up!
