Not only did Johnny counter the pressure-point attack, but his second point is a mirror of the second point Daniel scored on him decades ago. Using the legs to take his opponent to the ground before striking. A beautiful call-back.

It works even better in this context instead of just a pointless callback for fanservice's sake. Johnny was down a usable arm, he could only perform a takedown with the right side of his upper body so he used his legs instead. I'm very impressed, both at the choreography and respect of the source material without resulting to cheap fan pandering that has no substance. There's an actual reason Johnny would runback the technique that worked at the All-Valley.

One thing that doesn't get talked about here is how Miguel and Sam announced the points reflected both of them veering away from their previous senseis and towards new styles. Miguel was the observer on Johnny's side of the mat but firmly announced Daniel's point, to Johnny looking at him shocked. Meanwhile Sam was on Daniel's side of the mat and firmly called Lawrence's point, to Daniel's shocked reaction from her
It was a great reflection on how both teens changed recently, and both senseis felt in those moments that they were let down a bit by eachother's respective students

And thats why Miyagi didn't show Daniel the technique. The fact that Daniel used it on just a CASUAL POINT match shows Daniel's lack of maturity, as if he just wants to one up Johnny. That technique is ONLY used when youre in absolute danger and there's no rules.
EDIT: OK so I didn't see what happened prior to this, just clips. So it was a pretty serious match to see who has control of the students but still, doing something like the pressure point technique is rather at least near fatal and even using something like that is quite overboard.

They were so evenly matched to where it wasn’t funny. I loved how Daniel used that pressure point Miyagi-Do technique that Chozen had taught him when Johnny started pouring on the offense which goes to show that Daniel had evolved as a much smarter fighter than ever before. The point is that both Daniel and Johnny were always equaled to each other it’s just that Miyagi-Do teaches you how to be a much more patient smarter fighter while Eagle-Fang/Cobra Kai teaches you how to be a much tougher stronger aggressive fighter. You have to realize that when they were kids, Johnny didn’t fight Daniel when he knew Miyagi-Do karate until he fought him in the All-Valley tournament so maybe that threw him off and caused him to lose but in any regard, for Daniel to have only trained a couple of months against Johnny who was much more accomplished in Cobra Kai karate from when he was a adolescent boy tells you how effective Miyagi-Do karate truly is

I wouldn't say they were always equal to each other. Johnny was always bigger, stronger, more athletic and aggressive. However, the superior training from Miyagi Do equalized them as fighters, so I agree Miyagi-Do karate is truly effective.

    • @paidenthusiast
      @paidenthusiast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@metsrus I meant once Daniel got much more familiar with Miyagi-Do karate, he and Johnny became equals in a way because even as good of a fighter as Johnny was, he wasn’t as smart or as disciplined as a fighter as Daniel was. As Mr. Miyagi once told Daniel on when Sato tried to hit him with seemingly looked like a death blow “ No matter who’s stronger, only who’s smarter “ and that’s exactly what the pressure point method was about. Miyagi-Do karate also taught you how to be stronger like Cobra Kai it’s just that being patient with smart defense was the key to making it work to perfection. So in closing….
Johnny - the better aggressive more agile fighter
Daniel - the more patient smarter and more disciplined fighter
Their strengths and attributes offset each other which is how they’re so equal to one another

He has PTSD and mental health issues from his childhood, his mum's death & his childhood sweethearts death and then the war and his adulthood life post Vietnam that he has never truly healed from, as he is from that generation where it isn't "manly" to seek help & therapy and men dont cry to talk about their feelings.. I hope they explore this more in S5 and in his redemption arc. He clearly cares about other broken people from disadvantaged backgrounds (ie Johnny, Robby & Tory - he even sticks up for Tory on numerous occasions like with her landlord and amanda and although he tries to mask it as wanting the best fighters in CK I think deep down he uses that as an excuse to help people like her) and he probably would be a great mentor to kids like them if he just channeled his energy better.

I absolutely love that they were evenly matched. I desperately wanted this fight to show that both of their style's were "worthy" - and the coolest thing is that it was Johnny that could see that and not Daniel, and the reason for that being Terry Silver tipping Daniel off-balance. They've really stayed true to Daniel's character in this season - even with all the training and life lessons he received from Mr. Myagi, deep down he's still a hot-head and the second he saw Silver that showed. He completely lost focus, threw everything he's learned out of the window and became aggressive, misusing what Chozen taught him to try to ensure things went his way and even after that when it was clear that he and Johnny were evenly matched his stubbornness meant he couldn't let go and accept they needed to work together until it was too late.

Chozen's exacts words on the Miyagi pressure point attacks were: "If an enemy INSISTS on war..." This was just sparring and there was no mal intent. Kreese had every intention to kill Daniel during their fight and it's because he had no choice but to use it that it saved him. Daniel misused it here and it's why it didn't work.

@@madpinoy5683 I agree. I think at first glance you can watch this and see Johnny's reaction of "what the hell man?" as confusion as to how Daniel did what he did, but Johnny had seen him do it to Kreese, so I think it was more of a "really? You're so desperate to prove a point you're going to do that?" - like it seemed more like disappointment than anything else from Johnny. Daniel was teaching Miyagi-Do to the kids, but he was never going to be teaching them anything like the pressure point techniques, it was obviously far too advanced and dangerous. It was at that point that Johnny realised that Daniel was fighting because of his own personal issues with Johnny and Silver that he couldn't let go of rather than thinking about what was best for the kids.

This was a fight for who got exclusive teaching rights, not a petty dispute. Daniel genuinely believes here that the kids are in danger from Terry if they continue learning Eagle-Fang karate. Right or wrong, his choice to use this technique shows us how scared he is and how serious he is taking this. And we know how dangerous Silver is. So, life and death, maybe not, but to Daniel it’s the kid’s safety on the line. That’s worth consideration.

Johnny overcoming Daniel’s pressure point technique is such a perfect representation of the message of this show.
In the original Karate Kid film, Miyagi’s philosophy and lessons were always portrayed as the morally superior and the correct way to live life, while Cobra Kai’s lessons were shown as the indisputable wrong and corrupt path to take. This was symbolized in how Daniel ultimately defeated Johnny using the Miyagi fighting style, which demonstrated that Miyagi’s outlook was the better option.
But Cobra Kai is different in that despite both Johnny and Daniel having completely different outlooks on life and what’s best for their students, neither one is proven as better than the other. Despite all the fights and feuds that happen throughout this series, they both ultimately did have a positive effect on their students, all while sticking to their own beliefs. Johnny specifically, whose way of teaching could easily have been portrayed as evil and wrong, is proven to have taught his kids how to be brave, take risks, and confront their problems.
So him successfully countering Daniel’s pressure point move, a move he literally learned during a spiritual journey to Japan and would have been the move that won this fight normally, just by sticking to his own fighting style proves that both of their outlooks on life and fighting are considered equal, despite how much they hate each other.
