I used to despise early 3d graphics when I was a kid in the 90s, especially the ps1, but I'm starting to finally be nostalgic for it
each game had its own engine basically so they didnt all look the same like games now a days, every dev be like: UNREAL ENGINE!
@@solofalcon Exactly why I hate modern 3D graphics, the engine variety is beginning to bottleneck, and when monopolies begin to form, content goes downhill.

No, every Unreal Engine game does not literally look the same, but there is no denying that similar game engines produce similar results regarding lighting, rendering, and effects.
This is not necessarily a problem and it’s been around for a long time.
Half-Life looks a lot like Quake because it’s based on the same engine. A lot of the Renderware games from the PS2 era look somewhat similar. Even with the OG Unreal Engine 1, Unreal 98, Deus Ex, Harry Potter 1&2, and even friggin’ Brother Bear looked undeniably similar in terms of how they were rendered.
Good developers can utilize UE’s features to render beautiful, visually unique games. The problem is that increasingly they are not.
Many developers choose to use UE’s horrific default lighting and water styles and it shows. It’s why mediocre efforts like Shenmue 3 and GTA Definitive Edition look disturbing similar graphically (and not in a good way) despite being made by different studios altogether.
UE I sn’t an inherently bad engine, but devs are increasingly relying on hideous default values because it’s easy, which I think is why the engine is so maligned these days despite actually being a very capable piece of tech.
@@solofalcon plus each platform had its own hardware architecture. now everything just a PC and measured in linear performance power. I preferred when n64, ps2,gamecube,ps3,sega,pc all had different look/sound/feel even if it was a nightmare for developers.
i can't believe i am still mindblown by the fact, 3D games exsited in the god damn 70s really shows how ahead of it's time it is and how impressive it is

@virtue no VR is still 2D, remember its just two screens. All 3D is perceived as 2D. If you were a 4D being you'd seen in 3D. You dont technically see in 3D, but you do have 3D touch and movement

wrong, when u combine two 2D images u get stereoscopic 3D thats the definition of 3D just like your eyeballs... so VR, 3ds, and movie red/blue glasses all qualify

The way early games came up with different ways to create “3D”. Always loved “flat 3D” games like the background in FF7 and then also Donkey Kong.

Amazing that how 3D has been evolved over the years. I’ll always going to remember the classic PS1 polygon style of graphics.
Low-Poly PS1 3D is definitely a cool vibe.
Finally seeing true 3D for the first time was mind-blowing, and the leap from 3D to high definition and realism was absolutely incredible. I just wish I could live to see the future for this stuff!
Sonic R's soundtrack did not need to go as hard as it was. Yet the composers made a great OST regardless.

My heart jumped when I saw the "Ape Escape" footage. 😊Thank you for making my day for that, because I have fond memories of me and my brother playing that game. (Though "Crash Bandicoot 3" was the first game I played by myself, that's beside the point.)
And in all seriousness, though. It is quite amazing how 3D graphics have come a long way, since the 70's.
The 1990's was amazing and truly showed us what gaming could be. The early 2000's showed us amazing graphics and actually gave us designs that look more beautiful and human like Resident Evil 4 on the Nintendo GameCube. I love the upgrades of graphics throughout the years now modern graphics are amazing but back then the improvements just hit better due to how fast everything seemed to be evolving. Cool video. ^_^

I remember playing Vice City and being wowed by the visuals so damn much, in fact, I still love looking at them today it's all pleasing.
Something i also remember doing is when playing these games even with limited space, I still felt like the world you were playing in was bigger, it's funny to think that I used to be impressed by silly level backgrounds but I felt like you could go to them and frequently imagined going to them

Thanks! Yeah, I was blown away by how crazy arcade games were. They were usually several years ahead of console and PC at any given time from the mid 80s to mid 90s.
I dunno if many other games did it, but I liked the mix of sprites and models used in Xenogears. Having giant, 3D modeled mechs sometimes fighting enemies that were just 2D sprites was funny to me. I think Paper Mario was kind of similar, having some enemies that were just paper cutouts, but then bigger bosses and stuff were like full 3D paper models.
I always found 3D models from the 80s - 90s to be so interesting to me.
It was at a time where the concept of 3D graphics, while it wasn't new, was still in it's developing stages, kind of like an infant.
It was around the late 90s to early 2000s where CGI reached its adolescent age, before reaching adulthood around the early 2010s.

Gaming in the 90s was far far more exciting than any other decade. Especially today.
One of the saturn's biggest problems was it didn't have enough of an emphasis on 3D.
Honestly, I’m of the opinion that 3D graphics have more-or-less peaked. We’ve hit the point where characters can look near-identical to real people and the upgrades to graphical fidelity with every new console generation feel minute at best, at least to me.
I’m not saying this as a negative, mind you. I think it’s incredible that we’ve come so far from the early blocky polygons. I just find it strange how people are still trying to push the envelope when it’s already been pushed so far.
I can definitely see that. The leap from PS4 to PS5 seems minor compared to say the leap from PS2 to PS3. I think one of the few areas where graphics are still noticeably lacking is in hair detail/physics. Besides that though, games are inching closer and closer to photorealism.
Need for Speed 1995 on Sega Saturn was the first 3D game i played as a kid when i was 5, i was blown away by the graphic's at the time. 007 Goldeneye N64 was the first video game i ever owned and the first video game i ever beat when i was 7. Good Times 😍🤩

3d games have always been here since the beginning of tennis for 2. 3d games got popularize in the late 80s. Wolfenstien 3d was one of them. Also do you also count those games with actual interactive videos?

Stunts and Star Fox were the first ones that wowed me back in the day, along with the intros to Another World and Flashback. I, Robot was a bit before my time but really amazing for 1984
Even though I was part of the PS2/GC era, I always had a softspot for PS1/N64 graphics. It's like you mentioned: You still used your imagination for these games. You didn't have that full thing thrown in your face where you only play the game. All you had was polygons and stuff. I can still remember the first PS1 I ever played to this day: Tekken 3. It still holds up so well today. Same with Crash Bandicoot, which I played years later, or Super Mario 64. They're all so unique in their own way. Something, that many newer games can't replicate sadly. One of the fewer game series I still play is Yakuza. It might be realistic when it comes to storytelling... but oh boy. The over the top goofy combat and sidestories is exactly what makes it stand out from the rest. It can be realistic, but doesn't want to be. It's as if the devs still know: It's a game! It's not a movie!
An interesting thing about Battlezone was that the US Army even approached Atari because they thought that a similar "game" could be used to train crews that would operate armored vehicles such as tanks or fighting vehicles. Although some people at Atari weren't to thrilled about working with the military.
I honestly wonder if VR ever has a future in training soldiers or SWAT teams.

I really appreciate every aspect of video gaming. With that being said: I really wish they would lean into creating games of All type's again. 2d, 2.5d, 3d. It would let companies release more arcade style games. In between the triple AAA games that take many years to make. +I just love well made games that utilize unique art styles & 2d, 2.5d is just fun to have around and get to play sometimes to mix things up. We shouldn't "Only have 3d games"
Another notable early 3D title I can think of is 1974's Spasim which was an early multiplayer 3D game that is often considered to be one of the first FPS games alongside 1973's The Maze and some consider it to be the first 3D game due to the fact that 1973's The Maze had a longer development cycle and wasn't completed until later in 1974.

Another game that revolutionized the gaming world 'visually' is Half-Life that came out in 1998 because it introduced skeletal animation which means no more blocky 3d polygonal characters.

The shift to 3D in the 1990s was a strange time. Programmers were still discovering how to make good games in 3D and the hardware was barely capable. 2D had already gone through all that; mostly horrible controls, basic graphics running on basic technology... and here we were again with 3D games two decades on lol.

6:11 It's called soul blade. I would know I actually played it on the PS1 back in the day. Not in 95. We got a PS1 later than 1995, but I did play soul blade during the '90s. I even remember that was the game I played in 1999 when everybody was waiting for the ball to drop for the new millennium. I was still playing it when it became the year 2000. It's called soul blade, not soul edge. Soul edge is the weapon the characters are after and also the name of the final boss you go against

It was renamed from Soul Edge to Soul Blade because tRAdEmArk hOLdErs in USA tried to privatize the word Edge and tried to sue everyone who used word "edge" in game titles until EA ravaged it for trying to sue for mirror's edge.

I want shorter games, with worse graphics, and developers to be paid more, to work less. Because as pretty as modern games are, most of them are trash because they lack any and all charm the old games got, by being restricted on hardware, rather then time.

we have enough graphical fidelity, the next innovation is persistence; being able to keep the dead bodies and bullet casings on the ground just like we had in doom
That was one thing I really liked about RE2 Remake. The fact that zombie bodies persisted even after defeating them was a really great touch.

am I crazy or the first QUAKE game was not fully 3D polygon alongside all these you mentioned!? every gamer knows the legacy of Quake that quote in 2020 "There's a big chance any 3D game you played after 1996 has a bit of QUAKE DNA specially FPS games" well who knew Call of Duty is still using a modified version of the first QUAKE in 1996 "IDTECH2" or "Quake Engine"

3d graphics definitely took off around the time doom came out, i feel like it was the real first step forward between "3D graphics" and what most people saw as 3D graphics due to it using a unique engine.

When 3D came along, we were kind of blind, we just wanted 3D games, and we ignored 2D games. Looking at it today, the 2D ones back then were much prettier than the 3D ones.

DOOM and games built off of it are not real 3D. DOS can't do 3D. So they just built a game that looks and acts 3D using camera tricks. It's a 2D game that looks 3D. With good enough coding you can easily make people think a 2D game is 3D. It's why the monsters have "tall" hit boxes.

I understand that the viedo would take to long and doom alr made fps in 3d but half life is just smth diffrent than a fps like doom its the first 3d or even ever fps game that has a story I would talk more about it but I dont want to make the comment super long.

1:10 Excatly, "3D" is a scam, it really should be called "multi perspective modeling" or something. Oh wow, you can do that to just about as much as you want using sprites (2.5D). And if you were around at the time, you can imagine the confusion, skepticism and disappointment. I kept telling my friends "it's a scam, it's still 2d on a flat screen" when talking about the imminent release of the Playstation and N64. I said it was especially scammy because the graphics looked like DOG$HIT compared to very mature 2.5D graphics at that time. Compare the $hitty playstation graphics to NeoGeo, its no question which ones look better. That PS1 stuff looks like minecrap.
