There's an example that's not exactly without the aid of internet, but still interesting. There was a popular glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii. Even though the Wii had internet access, it had no DLC functionality implemented, so you couldn't patch or update a game through the console. The glitch itself basically happened if you spoke to a specific character during a questline, the game would softlock you, and you wouldn't be able to progress anymore. The solution nintendo found was to create a Wii channel (which was the equivalent of a menu app) that would change the savefile data of the game so that the part of the story that was accidentally locked could continue.
That's actually really interesting. I vaguely remember hearing about it, but I forgot it was from Skyward Sword. I'll definitely look into it more for a potential Part 3 of this series.

@@zoodakberg I could be wrong, but I think that DLC for those games was handled differently from other consoles. All of that DLC was on-disc and it was *really* easy to fake. Any checks made to see if you owned that content was made entirely on the user's end, not on the server's end, so you could just use mods that could unlock that stuff no problem.
At least that's my understanding, I remember hearing this from some friends that were big into Guitar Hero.
Wii did have DLC support, but all the downloadable files (including WiiWare games) were limited to a measly 30 MB.
The size limit was so strict that, in most cases, releasing DLCs and patches for Wii games was not worth the effort.
Fun Fact about the Berry Program: It was also a part of GameCube Demo Kiosks at the time too. Not only would it update your game but you would also receive a shiny Zigzagoon.
Fun fact: the "Berry Program" doesn't update the game. It simply changes the RTC (real-time clock) to 02/01/2002.
It's crazy how many times "updated version of a game released a year or so later that renders the original obsolete" happened in the late '90s to early '00s. Square did this with basically every Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts game via the International/Final Mix editions, and Konami did it with Silent Hill 2 and the Metal Gear Solid games. But a lot of the time it was done a lot more subtly when the game got a second printing, and was mainly a way to incorporate bug fixes before online patches were a thing. Ocarina of Time had three different versions on the N64 alone, with the original having the most bugs and the third release also censoring things like the color of Ganon's blood.
Yeah, definitely. Stuff like the KH Final Mix games have very well documented differences from the original versions, but more subtle updates are less known widely online.

A big example that comes to mind is Midnight Club 3. The Greatest Hits release was called Remix and had a TON of new content.
Dozens of new cars, new events, an entire new city map, new music, etc.
You could even import your original save so you wouldn't have to start over. It was basically an expansion.

Persona still hasn't given up on this tradition, and it took Pokémon until 2020 to abandon it in favor of DLC.

DLC feels more excuses for companies to intentionally send out unfinished games
i'd say that goes way more for the free content updates than the paid stuff, but it is increasingly common now

“Most likely….” Bro…. Research this…. There is plenty of information out there in why Mike was removed from the game. Not only did cost come jnto play… but there was also the “sexual assault” claims against him. Nintendo didn’t want to be associated with ANY of that. 😢

I really hope all of those versions are preserved. Stuff like the berry glitch being easily offered to be fixed is nice, but I also think no matter how small, everything should be preserved.
Even though I am pro preservation, I think keeping game breaking glitches arent a part of the experience that it is supposed to be preserved, actually in many cases these glitches can prevent the user from safely enjoying the game. I loved Pandoras Tower on Wii but it was frustrating that I encountered a game breaking bug and never got the courage to beat the game again because of it

There are berry glitch version roms along with the fixed versions way back then when running these games in an emulator needed a "beefy" PC. Dunno now.
But preserving everything nowadays is nigh impossible. Just look at how often games update and the sheer number of them.
People used to try to "archive" each version of games by separating each update files but they've all pretty much given up now. The most active archives you'll see nowadays don't even have the latest versions, because just keeping up and updating every game is already a lot, let alone keeping archives of updates too.
I think my first exposure to the "offline update" thing was Super Paper Mario. I was watching a glitch compilation video that showed an oob clip you could do by pinching yourself between a wall and a pipe, but it mentioned that they made a version that fixed this, and said you could tell by whether the disc's art was a certain way. Lo and behold, I go into the game and find the pipe moved slightly away from the wall, meaning I had the patched version. Never really thought about it after that because the 3ds and wiiu came out not long after but it is pretty interesting to learn about
Not related, but props to Nintendo (in Japan) for keeping all their old original webpages open and available for everybody to see, even after all these years.
It is a standard practice in Japan since a large percentage of the population is elderly and they typically do not update to new technology as long as the old existing equipment is working. The Famicom was still supported by Nintendo even decades after the last game came out and they only stopped recently once repair parts ran out.

Irony: while watching this, I decided to pop in my cart for Street Fighter Anniversary Edition for Switch, to see just how many versions it had covered. I couldn't though; it needed to update. :D

All those Street FIghter II updates and there were still two more, believe it or not. Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix was released in 2008 for Xbox 360 and PS3 and Ultra Street Fighter II was released in 2017 for Nintendo Switch. 😵

whenever i think about updates before internet i think of sonic 1. The earlier copies had still clouds in green hill and were missing the wavy effect in labyrinth. They also had the spike bug.

It's been fun catching up with the videos of yours I somehow missed. I first got introduced to your channel through recommendation of that video when you talked about the Super Mario Land series and because I was introduced that early I was able to just watch every video you already had but somehow over the past month I missed quite a few but I'm almost caught up.
Anyways It is really cool that developers found ways to just kind of like update games before there was internet. Although I do kind of think it's a level scummy that you're having to pay full price for a bunch of different versions of the same game if you want to be up to date. Obviously in reference to Street fighter 2.

After ST there was Hyper SF2 on CPS2 which is different than SF2 Hyper fighting (stupid to have two similarly named games). Hyper SF2 was the last CPS2 title.
I found out years later that there was a CPS2 version of that game, after I saw it on the PlayStation 2.
Fun Fact: Street Fighter II Turbo was released a few months after the fall of the Soviet Union but still used the USSR as a country in its map.
It wouldn't be until Ultra Street Fighter II where U.S.S.R. is finally renamed to Russia.
The announcer says the country names, so maybe they could have done it for Super when they changed announcers.
Should have talked about how the european version of games often used to be updated version of their american release.
Like how Melee is v1.01 in america but europe got v1.02 with futher balance changes. And how Ico in america is incomplete because it was rushed out in time for christmas, the japanese and european versions came out later and are the "complete" versions.

I've been to quite a lot of arcades, but I don't think I've ever EVER seen a vanilla Street Fighter 2 cabinet. Champion Edition was basically the 'normal' version that was everywhere, and as a kid I was so confused about the bezels advertising new features like "play as the bosses" and "mirror match". Because I never played a version that didn't have them! Classic example of the updated version completely replacing the original.
7:25 A similar thing happened when there was a game breaking glitch in the Co-Op mode for Turok Rage Wars on the N64. Acclaim (the publisher) also offered customers for fixed copies of the game. They are extremely rare to this day (they came in grey cartridges instead of black).

I always think of Resident Evil on PS1. They released 2 updates after the original long box that were supposed to edit back in the gory cutscenes. Never happened. But they did add random stuff like auto-aim (Directors Cut) and analog/rumble support (Dual Shock edition). Oh, and that lovely new soundtrack.
It's kinda funny to me that they still advertised the uncut cutscenes on the back of the box but apparently the localizers didn't get the memo. The way Capcom remedied this was by having the uncensored scenes on their website... in 1997, 240p, dial-up internet glory.
I’m pretty sure you could also put your copy of Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire into a DS that is connected to the internet to get the berry update.

I think it counts more as DLC than game updates but Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles did patch the original game too. If you watch Sonic 3 videos from a TH-cam channel called ORKAL, besides seeing loads of entertaining glitches, you can see that Sega did patch some Sonic 3 bugs with the combo cartridge system. One example being it's a lot harder to get stuck in a wall in Carnival Night zone, it used to be very easy with jumping in a lot of specific places
Let's talk about the original game itself. Even though the second half of the game wasn't supposed to be DLC in the first place, they had to split the game apart not only due to time constraints, but due to a stupid deal with McDonald's, as well as the cartridge being a whole hell of a lot more expensive if they put the entire game together. But 9-year-old me didn't know that until Sonic & Knuckles came out several months later, and my mom wouldn't buy it for me because she just bought me that game. Lol. I didn't even find out until I was an adult, that Sonic 3 & Knuckles was only supposed to be one game. And it's for this reason that I will only refer to it as Sonic 3, because both games split apart just aren't as fulfilling.

Maybe not Nintendo in Japan, but there is an issue of Nintendo Power in the US that acknowledges the MissingNo glitch for Red/Blue
The game historian made a video about punch out. And there where two reason why the game wasn't updated. The first one was about money and the second one was about mike Tyson being involved in controversy about domestic violence and drugs abuse
Mario Party 8 is an unlikely example of how Nintendo made multiple versions to hide previous mistakes. The UK really didn't like a specific slur Magikoopa used, so Nintendo changed the rhyme in the UK and completely omitted it elsewhere.
Was that when he said "spastic"? Because in the US that isn't a slur at all. It's a mild insult but not a slur.

If I remember right, in case all else failed, Nintendo would even allow people afflicted by the berry glitch to mail in their copies of the game to get the update applied!

Curious if the berry glitch stays fixed if the cart battery goes kaput. It's gotta be stored in the save, right?
You will have to reapply the patch if the battery dies or if it is replaced. This is because every time that you save, the save file has a timestamp of the RTC calendar. When the battery is replaced the RTC is reset to 0 but the RTC timestamp written in the save file is not.

On the other end there are 5 different versions of Revenge of Shinobi - Genesis all changed for copyright reasons. For example some have Spiderman, Batman even Godzilla. Funny thing is some of those are very valuable, enough so it has been suggested you goto an actual auction. By the way the only way to know what version you have is play to that level and check for yourself.

I really wanted to watch, but I couldn’t get over the incorrect information on Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. For starters the game MTPO was going to be exclusive for the US and PO wasn’t even going to have a Japan release. After much fan clamor the opted for PO, and after seeing the success from MTPO in the states Japan again asked for it and got it. Also, the reason Tyson was removed was due to his licensing contract expiring and before negotiations could be finalized he lost to Buster Douglas.

I remember a letter to the editor in a gaming magazine where someone was transported years into the future and the game had like 20+ words in its title. They weren’t that far off.
at brazil we call rainbow edition "bus station street fighter" cuse we find it on bus station (something that is only in brazil, like the most famous news reporter name being william bonner)
I remember hearing that Tyson got into some major controversy later on in his career, meaning that Nintendo no longer wanted to sell games with his likeness; I'm not completely certain of this, though, as it wouldn't change the existence of the original copies and media.

Ngl I kinda preferred the 3rd version approach of Pokemon to the DLC. Just the idea of it being a new game, as well as the extra content, made it worth it to me.
I guess I wish the third versions took a bit more risks and included more stuff. I liked how Pokemon Yellow gave you a completely different starter from the originals and I also enjoyed how Emerald gave the protagonists new designs. Platinum did something pretty cool where it changed the Gym order. If Pokemon did more stuff like that with the third versions and added a ton more content I'd be all for it.
@@kirotalksyt yeah pokemon yellow felt like playing in the pokemon anime. It even had gym leader teams, NPC names, and dialogue straight out of the anime. It's a shame they didn't really repeat this idea again.

on the pc/mac sides there were cover disks/discs.
What about the Intellivision which had 2 separate versions of Auto Racing, where they changed from absolute steering to relative steering to make the game more challenging.
Also Colecovision Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr had 2 different bug fix cartridges. In Donkey Kong the "ladder warp" was changed from being a random appearance on the top ramp to going to the next level.
Here I was thinking that this was going to talk about how Guitar Hero: World Tour updated my 360 from the Blades dash to the Panel dash.

I’m old as dirt so when I was a teen Halo 2 map pack expansion sets were sold on disks. It was effectively DLC on a disk.

the branding for Mike Tyson was gone because he received his first loss in 1990. So Nintendo wanted to change the branding. Btw if you have the nes classic, you can import other games on to the System

As I understand it, the berry program update doesn't change anything in the game's code -- it can't, it's a mask ROM chip. Instead it bumps the RTC chip forward to the start of year 3 so the days start counting again, and updates the last-seen-day number in the game save so that time will progress normally. Starting a new game doesn't reset the actual RTC when you set the time, so once it's fixed it stays fixed. Until the battery dies and the RTC starts from 0 again when you replace it. Then the glitch will return, but you get additional issues because the last time the game has seen is way in the future. I think save editors can fix this, as can Lorenzooone's gen 1&2 to 3 trading homebrew GBA app.
And then, (I don't know if you talked about this already, but) DLC in general is the evolution of what used to be known as expansion packs. And in all honesty, this is one of the reasons why I feel like Mario Galaxy 2 is an expansion pack of the original Mario Galaxy. Because that game is basically ideas they have for the first game, but they couldn't fit it into the first game.
Galaxy 2 was even internally named: Super Mario Galaxy - More.

Mike Tyson recently said in an interview when asked about Punch-Out "we want to make a new one." No one currently knows what this means, but it shows he is still interested in the series.

You can legitimately play Mike Tyson's Punch-Out but you would have to get a NES mini console. If you're unable to get an actual full-sized NES

@@rayyaninspookymonth1630 The biggest glitch I've run into is being able to see through the floor sometimes. Then there was a time I thought there was a hummingbird or something nearby because there was a little red ball bouncing around when I was fighting a field pokemon but when I got out of battle it was a trainer bouncing a PokeBall in his hand, only the trainer had for some reason turned invisible during the battle.
Tyson went to prison in 91, doubt Nintendo wouldve stuck w him after that.

there's another reason nintendo likely didn't renew the deal besides money, tyson was also a bit more of a controversial figure than the global icon he was before, or so i've heard, the important part is he bit a dude's ear off mid match, not exactly the image that 20th century nintendo of america was ok with.
i actually believe it was an attempt to make some distance between them and mike, since if it was all about the money, they probably wouldn't have even risked re-releasing the game without his star power behind it.

I mean yeah but smash came out in 99 while sf2 came out in 91 so we had 8 years of basically every major fg franchise spawning out of sf2 (like mk, kof, tekken, mvc, samsho, guilty gear, vsav, virtua fighter, soul calibur, all came out before smash), so at the point smash came out FGs as a genre was already pretty well defined, with sf2 as the foundation, and then came smash and just kinda made a whole ass different thing that somehow is also a fighting game, istg my guilty gear monkey brain cannot comprehend melee or any plat fighter at all lol
