    Randy Linden's SNES port of Doom is nothing short of impressive on a technical level knowing the hardware limits in place and how he pulled it off, the guy was an absolute wizard. He also did the impossible port of Dragon's Lair to the Amiga and created the Bleem PSX emulator.

  • @wraithcadmus
    @wraithcadmus ปีที่แล้ว +7

    SNES Doom is impressive for sure, though according to Randy Linden about 95% of the lifting is done with the SuperFX2. I joke that Doom was ported to the SuperFX2 and used the SNES for playback.
    As Joe alluded to the 16-bit micros did a lot with 3D. Shout-outs to, Hunter for having a full 3D world with NPCs who remember you and multiple driveable vehicles in 1991, Frontier for being everywhere and a sequel to the beloved Elite, and Zeewolf 2 for probably being the most technically impressive with its patchwork floor.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also according to Randy Linden, by going back and using the SNES' built-in HDMA feature properly, he could basically double the frame-rate now from around 10 fps-15 fps to around 25 fps. And there's talk about doing exactly that.

    Really loved this episode and the low poly presentation was on point. Actually, pretty amazing any polygon games were done on the 16-bit systems. "Racing Aces" on the Sega CD uses polygons but the game play is really choppy. I have a reproduction cart of "RES Q" I play on real hardware, and I actually enjoyed that game. With all the visual tricks going on in the Genesis game "Red Zone" I would be surprised if polygons were not used in there somewhere. A game on the Sega Genesis which had a very impressive polygon game engine is "Kawasaki Superbike Challenge". With how smooth that game runs I am surprised that game engine was not used more. A few you missed, off the top of my head: Formula One (AKA F1), F1 World Championship, and Kawasaki Super Bike Challenge. (Genesis versions specifically), and I think I all 3 use the same engine and are SUPER impressive (to me). Also, tank games. Just look up games where you drive a tank and you'll find a few on each system. Not as many as you will flight sims, but nearly. And often using flight sim engines. Best one that I've played being Garry Kitchen's Super Battletank. There's other oddball games like Red Zone, which is also really impressive (though the amount of actual 3D vs trickery is debatable). It definitely FEELS and looks 3D. Does that count? Heh.

    Love this episode! Primitive 3D was shocking for me when I played starfox 64. Brings back memories

    I'm suprised you didn't mention Faceball 2000 on the SNES and even the Game Boy (8-bit 3d!). I played throught the Game Boy version of Faceball 2000 and it was great fun shooting smiliods. A simple but fun first person shooter. It runs at a pretty nice 3-4 frames per second which for a simple game like it, it is perfectly playable!

    I remember getting Stunt Race FX for my birthday and how much I disliked it at first. However, since I had to wait at least four months until Christmas before getting another game I had to spend some time with it, and after getting used to the game's physics it was actually a lot of fun.
    Great episode, as usual, thank you!

    Vortex is great on the main level. The first is meant to be an easy introduction to the controls, and the last is hard as pure hell. Played it a ton, the soundscore definitely helped.

    Another World was always one of those games that drew me in with it's atmosphere.. time to try and finally beat it. Thanks for another great episode, Joe.

    Genesis pushing those games with no special chip in the cartridge, is crazy, really good

    Out of This World didn't used polygons in its visuals. It was all rotorscoped from actual objects. There's a great Behind The scenes video of this game on youtube

    Fun fact Joe: if you were lucky enough to acquire an SNES Xband cartridge by Catapult you could play SNES Doom online across the country! That really 1-up the Super Nintendo version of Doom over the Sega 32X version.
