  • Friday marks 70 years since "I Love Lucy" made its debut on CBS. It was a major hit at the time and went on to a life in syndication and streaming that continues to this day. The show had a big impact on television and also on a small town in upstate New York. Jamie Wax has more.
    “CBS Saturday Morning” co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts.

    Jeff Glor, born and raised near Buffalo, NY, who anchors CBS Saturday Morning was certainly instrumental
    in bringing this important anniversary to national attention. Jamestown is about 60 miles south of Buffalo, NY.

    When I was growing up in southwestern New York State in the 1950s and 1960s we never thought of Jamestown as a small town. To us it was the big city!

    • @AndrewVOdom
      @AndrewVOdom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right: it’s a (very) small city but a city nonetheless. America (and upstate NY) is full of them. A “small town” is another matter. Compared to BYC; Chicago; LA; etc- everything is a “small town.”

    April 26, 1989. I was stationed in Bamberg (West) Germany pulling duty as a sentry for Warner Barracks when we got the news from our SOG (Sgt of the Guard) during the dark, early hours of that day.
    I don't know why, but it didn't seem possible somehow.
    But then again alot of things didn't seem possible...
    The student revolt at Tiananmen Square...
    The Berlin Wall had crumbled...
    The loss of someone very dear to me. She was only 19...
    RIP to all who passed before me...

      @@darlenegoodwin More important than visible skin tone, it was CBS who viewed them as an "interracial" couple and would not greenlight the series until Lucy issued them an ultimatum: "it's either me & Desi together or you get nothing". She had the leverage because her "My Favorite Husband" radio series was extremely successful. CBS needed Lucy more than Lucy needed CBS.

    I really love this woman. She insisted to CBS her real husband be her husband on the show so she could spend time with him. CBS said who will believe a white woman has a husband of color (this was the 1940s) and she said well it is the truth he is my husband, so you take both of us or neither. It was bold and ahead of her time. I love people like her. She also stood up to a smear campaign calling her a communist. She was an amazing actress and person. Every person that saw her has a place in their heart for her. That's a special beautiful quality. Glad she is being celebrated.

    I used to have one share in Desilu Studios! I recall when the stock was worthless because the studio failed. It's amazing that such a popular show resulted in the failure of that studio and the stock. Too bad! I wonder if anyone will give honorable mention to my uncle, Milt Josefsberg, who wrote many of the I Love Lucy episodes? Is he represented in that museum at all?
