Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Kidman and Bardem, and with co-stars J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda, about the challenges of recreating the cast of "I Love Lucy" in Aaron Sorkin's latest film, which goes behind the scenes of a trailblazing career couple.

TCM is airing a podcast about Lucille Ball right now, it's really good. Lots of things I didn't know about her life. We all grew up watching her shows. Thanks to TCM, I get to enjoy her movies, as well.

I'm glad she praised the film. I remember an interview she and Desi Jr. gave where they said Lucy was always working running DesiLu and how she knew all 800 employees, but they thought of the Housekeeper as their mother. They sounded much like Diana talking about Prince Charles hating that his mother was the Queen as she only saw him an hour a day.
Because she's a producer, and she'll make huge $$$ off it.

@@lucinda2329 A couple million can make most people believe in most things. The casting choices were poor, and the story is pretty warped with a LOT of "artistic license". Better left alone.
I feel like we haven’t had a star like Lucy is a very, very long time. I miss the innocence of that era on TV.
With reality, as this story proves the reality is it wasn’t innocent at all. Nothing wrong that we are more honest with ourselves today, & nearly as racist.
@JAMES SMITH , my recollection of the this innocent “era” was the now underground racism, you know as a a child I watched Eisenhower send in troops to Little Rock, so a few black children could go to white schools. In high school I was shocked to hear blacks weren’t entitled to vote, & all that came with the Civil Rights Movement. Then their was the Red hunt of McCarthyism. This statement is the epitome of what Trump tries to sell. Tired of all the denial. I am happy our warts are showing. Decision Time for Americans. I miss the 50’s, as a white kid, but I noticed, & cared when the warts showed. I couldn’t understand, still don’t, & I shall we get into women, as in my state of Texas we are barreling backward to the those “good old days”, where a 13 year old has to deliver her rapists baby! I am dismayed with all we know how IGNORANT we are, & pine for some warped vision of the past, instead of plowing through a good future for all Americans. Thanks for the opportunity.

With so much respect to Nicole, it's been documented that the reason that Lucy insisted that Desi play her husband, was to keep him from cheating on her while being on the road touring with his band. And the reason the relationship didn't last was because of his cheating and his drinking...she simply couldn't take it anymore. All of this was depicted in a documentary about them that was beautifully done. And THE single most heartbreaking bit of that film, was when the two of them, already divorced, were at their daughter's house in the swimming pool with their grandchildren, and Desi's wet hair gets in his eyes. Lucy gently pushes his hair to the side...with so much love. It was gutwrenchingly sad.

I thought that documentary was excellent, very touching and sad. I was never a fan of the show, but I admire all that Lucy accomplished, and also her performances in movies, especially in the 1930s. She’s in a Marx Brothers movie, and a great Katherine Hepburn classic called Stage Door. She was beautiful, sassy, and funny.

My eyes watered when the cast said we can still feel their “love” today. It’s so true. Their love was beyond the end of a marriage. It was a never ending deep love. I hope they’re in “love” in heaven. That is my hope. Love 💕 is everything.

All these actors are at the top of their game..getting their various parts for this wonderful modern dramady of the "I Love Lucy" franchise, I'm sure gave each of them a big charge.
None of these people were right for the roles that they took. I don’t know who cast this movie but they were completely blind and tone deaf
Lucy is my favorite comedienne! Their time was before mine, but I've always watched the reruns. Carol Burnett is more my time & my 2nd favorite only because of Lucy. I love that they were great friends & that Lucy helped school Carol on being in charge of her business w/no apologies. I'd heard that Lucy always sent flowers to Carol on her birthday. Lucy died on Carol's birthday & later in the day her flowers arrived. Lucy & Desi had fire for each other & genuine respect for each other. Even after the divorce & forever, they loved each other. It was beautiful seeing them as grandparents spending time together in the pool with the kids. The marriage didn't last, but the love did.
I miss all the old time movie stars so anything about them is a treat! I'm excited to see this movie !

Nicole is not playing the infamous character “Lucy”. She is portraying LUCILLE BALL. I can’t wait to watch this.
But when you place Lucille Ball, you need to look and sound a little like her.

Stellar cast as they used to say and the entire presentation is very compelling. Being the Ricardos is nuanced to perfection and reveals more of itself with repeat viewings.
I am so happy the producers & directors selected Javier Bardem for Ricky & Nicole Kidman for Lucille Ball. What a powerful movie just by the casting! I cannot wait to see it!
Nicole is playing Lucille not Lucy (maybe only a fragment of Lucy) and she embodies Lucille, I think that Barden is a good choice for Ricky! Looking to watch the movie. with this movie Kidman proves that she is one of the
most talented actresses alive, the only one of her caliber is Tilda Swinton!

This is such a talented group of actors.
I'm so up in the air on this one because this is such a hard subject to tackle due to the legacies of each of those individuals (ESPECIALLY Lucille's). To anyone saying it shkukd be one person over another playing Lucille...remember she was FAR different off camera from the Lucy Ricardo character. I would like to hope having their children involved will help this production.
I loved her growing up , but like you say she was much different off screen...a perfectionist for one . And I think a tough Mom...hard for her to show love to her children.
Lucy and Desi never stopped loving each other, Desi's last words were telling Lucy he loved her
Truth! They never got over each other.
Lucy's last words were saying over and over I love you Desi in different intonations. Desi replied, Ï love you too, honey." A day after that phone call Desi lapsed into a coma and in another day died. Lucie Arnaz who was present during that last phone call her parents had with each other - figured out the day they last spoke was Nov 30, which would have been their 46 wedding anniversary.
This was an amazing show! I was stunned when I realized who the actors were, they were so convincing it was easy to fall into the story. I always believed Lucille was fantastic, but I didn’t really know her or her story. This small tidbit into her life gave me a lot of heartfelt empathy for this woman and at the end, it even made me cry.
The music in this Aaron Sorkin film weaves this intense film together seamlessly. Pemberton's score combined with all the themes and songs produced by retro-specialist Michael Andrew kept me mesmerized to the very end credit. They were ALL Being the Ricardos. Well done.
Kidman has her hands full playin the part of a super comedic giant like Lucille Ball
She's not being asked to play Lucy Ricardo. She's playing the private Lucille Ball. Very different task

This was pretty incredible. It's rare that a reenactment or dramatized tribute of classic Hollywood comes across as authentic and true as this movie seemed to get. I actually connected with it so much I would've loved to see them showcase just about any time period or episode. Great to see how much Lucie Arnez liked it as well.

I think that everyone knows it. And later after Lucy was remarried, she said in an interview that she had married a loser, (meaning Arnaz.). So in those later years she had openly showed that she was p.o.'d.

My father worked at the Union RR station in L.A. when one arrived on a train. The other was on a different track landing. They both began to scream at each other and my father never heard a couple using such words. Working in Hollywood I learned how much they loved and yet they could make this union survive. It truely heartbreaking.

Not sure about Desi, but definitely Lucy. Though Roddenberry had been around Desilu when Desi was still there, Lucy bought out Desi's half before either Star Trek pilot came along. Indeed, it was Lucy who personally convinced NBC to look at the second pilot after rejecting the first one.

Unfortunately, Kidman's over botoxed face keeps her from achieving Lucy's trademark super animated expressions
A good deal of Lucy's humor was her facial expressions. The longest laugh of a live audience at the time was an episode at their Ct. house where her shirt was filled with eggs and someone hugged her and they all broke. All she did was stand there without a word and the audience roared at her facial reactions

You gotta go in with the thought they are trying to entertain us. I'm 60 so I saw I love Lucy with my parents. Don't try to compare too harshly enjoy it if it's good
OK. We all know that it is an impossible task to recreate the physical attributes and chemistry that made this couple so famous. None of the actors look anything like the people they are portraying. I will see this movie not expecting miracles, but maybe to have a better understanding as to the way that this famous couple interacted with one another.
No one looks or talks exactly like Lucy and Desi .but they try to embody what they were like ,how they were together.And from the clips they nailed it !
I watched the tv series as a child. One of my favorite scenes was Lucy and Vivian placing chocolates into boxes on the conveyor belt which sped up. Hilarious! I decided a long time ago that I would watch reruns of the Lucy show if seriously sick bc comedy/laughter is needed to heal.Apparently, Henry Fonda had an attraction for Lucille Ball. Too bad she didn't negotiate for royalties when the show ended. Lucy missed out on a lot of money she could have earned passively. In an interview after she married her second husband Garry, Lucy said Desi was a loser. Desi Arnez sabotaged what they worked so hard to build up bc he never saw himself having that much success...Desi needed to destroy any gains, feeling more comfortable with owning very little. What a liability he must have been at times bc of his behaviors. In the 60s, Lucy was a nontraditional (working) mother, business manager, and pioneering comedianne in a culturally mixed marriage. She was an iconic, fiery redhead! Truly unconventional.❤️

Actually Desi was an astute businessman and it was his idea to use actual film & 3 camera shots so it looked like movie 🍿 quality which made it desirable for reruns & syndication 📺 and money 💰

I'm so surprised that all of them didn't know this very common knowledge about the actors they were portraying prior to filming. Nicole being very thin and getting Lucy's older husky voice down and facial expressions is great. They didn't regard each other with respect after the divorce like said in the video, Lucy put Desi down greatly, it's on video here in youtube.

She called him a bum in an interview with Barbara Walters. That being said, I've heard Lucie and Desi Jr. say they were able to put their differences aside to focus on them and that isn't always easy to do.
If you listen to any interview with their children, they remained good friends to the bitter end
Even as a kid that was all into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Disney Afternoon shows, there was always room for I Love Lucy and Gilligan’s Island.
I wanted to be skeptical about this as a 60 yr. old- these folks are treading on sacred ground. But the cast - I knew about Kidman, but JAVIER BARDEM? (No Country for Old Men)- Wow. And who else could you trust to even attempt "Fred Mertz" but J.K. Simmons?
Remember there are hundreds of outstanding stage actors in this country. But names are important.

Nicole did the voice and mannerisms well but wish they got her bigger lips coz Lucy was about the lips. Nicole's face doesn't move anymore.

It's been that way for about 5 years now. Apparently she's hooked on Botox and probably demands to keep using it in her movies. I say all of this while having liked her for years. But when the face distracts from the acting, it's an issue.

Love her as an actress, i just did not expected that she would be this interested in artificial stuff, she comes across as such a bright intelligent person.... so it's rather surprising ... i mean I looove Maryl Streep for instance, or Sarah Jessica and they look amzaing - without any of these procedures
I grew up watching I love Lucy so we’ll see how good Nicole Kidman did portraying Lucille Ball.
I wanted to say how "Hot!" actress Vivian Vance was back in the day, though she was told to put on weight for "ILL." But, now I'll also say Nicole Kidman should've laid off the plastic surgery on her face.
I know Nicole is a terrific actress but I was skeptical of her in this role. These clips have won me over, I think it will be ok and can’t wait to watch.
Her acting portrayal of Lucy is on point. But her makeup set is off quite a bit. I can’t get over that.
Nicole is playing Lucille the woman not as much Lucy the character & for that I'd love to see it.

The history of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is everything behind Desilu Productions. With all of the information out there about the sitcom show, the characters and actors, it's a disappointment that I have known for years more about the details (of History of Television Production 101) than these high paid professionals.
They've been busy...
I grew up loving Lucy …and I loved the movie…great job of capturing their essence ✅
Gotta say, I turned off this movie after 15 minutes. Nicole just looked so strange and her acting was so stilted, unlike the Nicole in EVERY OTHER FILM I have ever seen her in (I am a HUGE FAN of hers. I will watch this woman read a grocery list and be mesmerized the entire time). Wait a minute, don't go away yet. A friend posted on Facebook about how great he thought this movie was, and even though he was NOT a fan of Nicole, he loved her work in this (by the way, we are all theater actors, so we have educated opinions about this). I said to him "Are you kidding?? It was AWFUL, I had to turn it off after fifteen minutes!". His reply, "Try again". After some discussion, and watching Lucy Arnaz's delightful review of the final product, I gave it another go. It was wonderful. I had tears in my eyes at the end. Nicole and Javier and the people who played Fred and Ethel were brilliant. I realized that it was just hard for me to let go of the originals, I love them so much. It's truly uncomfortable to see someone else try to be them. They CAN'T be them, no one can. But, they can tell the story, which is what they did, and they did it brilliantly. And of course, my much beloved Nicole did a stellar job, as she always does. (Except - she's getting too skinny!! Eat something, Nicole! I know you chase after children all the time, and well done on that. Eat some of their kid food! lol XOXO).
I’m so looking forward to seeing this. 🤩 There are many who feel Debra Messing would have been a better choice but Nicole is so versatile.

@@robertn800 she did many bits on Will and Grace that were intentionally meant to emulate Lucy. Maybe they encouraged her to ham it up, maybe she could real it in but those scenes were always overacting and too desperate for a laugh

Actually, the Spaniards colonized Cuba for over 500 years. They left in 1898. 90% of White Cubans are of Spanish ancestry.
@@gb4478 and australians and americans share british origins. But cubans have such a different accent, lifestyle and background, compared with spaniards.
I just ended watching it and im no critic im just a fan of cinema since I was a kid like a lotta people and I always knew about Lucille and her show but nothing else and im so glad I could get to meet Lucille through Nicoles performance and this film, this is a total gem! it felt like a roller coaster I got happy and sad and everything in between the performances were great and the ending is beautiful, LOVED the film

Nicole Kidman is way too skinny to play Lucille Ball, Lucille Ball had a curvaceous figure and the actor playing Desi seems way too old, he's 52 and Desi was in his 30's and the reason Lucille wanted Desi to play her tv husband was to keep him home where she could keep an eye on him bc he was a philanderer

I was in my teens when the show was on and we watched it regularly.
It WAS really funny.
They were ALL great in their parts.
1: Whenever I see J K, I always think of the line: "We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two".
I live in WI and we had two of the worst low life forms to ever slither into the senate~j McCarthy and R Johnson.
That said, I will see this film.
could they have shown even just one clip that shows these two characters, just to hint at their performance and the way they appear. i love the clips from lucy in the 50s but we want to get an idea what the film is like

Apparently these 4 were not familiar with what is common knowledge about the people they were portraying. Lucy wanted Desi to be on I Love Lucy to limit his cheating on her, which was also the reason they got divorced. Many articles and documentaries talked about the animosity between Vance and Frawley. What was lesser known was Lucy being accused of being a communist or communist sympathizer. I will say that Nicole Kidman seems to have gotten Lucy's voice down.

The actors here bought into the whole Vance/Frawley animosity myth that's circled for decades. Yes, they weren't buddies and had two totally different personalities, but they were always professional to one another. They wouldn't have done the show for that long if they truly hated each other. I wish Sorkin didn't reinforce that myth.
@@bradleyscarton3931 Not only that, but the actor who plays William Frawley seems to think that the characters Fred and Ethel hated each other. Also completely untrue. They were cranky but they loved each other.
@@richie_and_duane Not sure about loving each other. I understood that when Fred and Ethel had a chance to have a spin-off series after ILL, that she refused because she no longer wanted to work with him. But maybe that's not accurate.

I'm still stuck on Debra Messing playing Lucy -- the physical comedy seemed a great match. I'm sure I'll enjoy Nicole, as well.
I think Messing looks more like Lucy. And she's not doing the Botox thing to her face like Kidman is.

Well, I don't see a perfect fit between the actors and the characters they play but I've seen movies done where they worked so hard to get the right look that the effort to get the right characterization seemed to be lacking.
Lucille Ball wanted Desi to play her on-screen husband so she could keep an eye on him. He was a known womanizer and she wanted to keep him close. Unfortunately, Desi was a cad and still cheated, which ruined their marriage.
Man! I wished they would of picked someone other than Nicole Kidman to play the role of Lucy.
Nicole can portray lucille..its a biopic and not d lucy sitcom ..
I feel like it would have been less distracting to NOT put the facial prostheses on Nicole Kidman.
It's just makeup. I saw another interview with Nicole. She says there were no prosthetics involved.
@@bbath7 She did mentioned in one of her interviews that they put a layer over the top of her eyes and blended it in so that they could change her eye brows. Other than that everything else was just make up.
It's Nicole HERSELF that is causing issues with her face. It's called Botox and she's apparently hooked on it. Nothing moves.
See the movie and give it a chance before you criticize it.
