I can't imagine anyone but Frawley playing Fred. I loved all 4 of those characters.
Trivia: When I was young and Frawley was then on My Three Sons, my grandmother mentioned that she had gone to school with him. To prove it, she brought out on old high school stage production program where the leads were played by her and William Frawley.
What school?

Thank you for telling the story of William Frawley. Watched I Love Lucy in reruns. The original airings were before I was born. I always thought that he had died during the My Three Sons show. I’ve seen a few movies he was in. What a sad ending for him, it’s too bad Vivian hated him so much. In the end, he proved that he had a kind, giving heart. May he Rest In Peace. God bless you
For context, from what I understand, he really made sure to needle her as much as possible and do whatever he could to get under her skin. He was no innocent. He knew exactly what he was doing. It is a shame when coworkers despise each other so much but I've been such a fan of this show my whole life I've read and watched a ton about it and I've learned that he deserved all the ire Vivian had for him.
Frawley left "My Three Sons" in the middle of season five-His health was in serious decline-The storyline was that Bub had gone to Ireland to take care of his sister-That's when William Demarest joined the cast as Uncle Charley.
@Lori H Apparently the animosity ran both ways; certainly Viv thought Frawley was a bit long in the tooth to play 'her' husband, but Bill aimed a few pot shots at Vance too, which wouldn't have helped their working relationship.
People forget he was in "Miracle on 34th street", and was excellent in it.

Ethel & Fred sure fooled me because I thought their onscreen glow together was incredible. Their characters just complimented each other so well.
I recall in later episodes William Frawley had a problem with one of his hands occasionally shaking / trembling. He would hide it by either putting his hand in his pocket or grabbing it with his other hand.
Sadly, he was a known alcoholic. He probably had the shakes.☹️
Sad to see that you didn't go a little deeper in Mr. Frawley's history because he was born in my home town, Burlington, Iowa. He sang in the St. John's Choir and went to Catholic school here. He was Burlington's celebrity!
So weird how when actors dislike each other in "real life" it can sometimes work out great on screen ... Debra Winger and Richard Gere totally hated each other during An Officer and A Gentleman but from that movie you'd never know it
Great Vlog again today! One thing a lot of people don't know, Lucy wanted Desi's name in the title of their TV Show, but they were turned down. So Lucy had the name of the series called "I Love Lucy", which is saying that Desi loves Lucy. So technically, Desi was in the title.
I would have never known about the dislike, for each other. But very professional to keep it away from the studio.
Sad that he had no friends. Stay safe as always.
I was teenager in the 70's and I could spend hours looking at all the merchandise in Licorice Pizza, the one on Topanga Canyon that was across the street from the mall. I'd look at new albums, then at their great selection of used albums, then at the posters and tee shirts. It was fun and I have fond memories of meeting cool people and cute girls there.
I would not call it a "sad ending" anymore than anyone else. He live to be a good age and didn't suffer like so many do in their last days.
I loved William! He helped make I love Lucy. No one else could of played that right. RIP thanks for making me laugh❤️

Regardless of how William and Vivian felt about each other in "real life," they played off one another brilliantly...the perfect foils for Lucy and Desi. Someone once told me that while working on "My Three Sons" he learned every 4-letter word he knew from Mr. Frawley! Thanks for telling this story, Jordan. Excellent presentation, as always!

Being a fan of Abbott & Costello, I remember William Frawley also from 2 of their movies, including their very first movie where they were 3rd on the billing. Great vlog.
Love this vlog! I always liked him, loved his voice and loved his comedy, too! Too bad the relationship with VV was like that-we all should learn from it-lifes' too short to behave like this, VV missed out on so much of what could of been a great friendship! Ty for all the information, glad he was so intuitive to add what he did in his contracts about forever risiduals, healthcare was so expensive way back when and that he was able to great care for himself, after working so hard all his life! Love the clause about being able to take off to go see the NY Yankees play, that's so great-good for him! Such a wonderful tribute, he's smiling down upon you! ty!!
Judge's "adviser" in original miracle on 34th street
Yes he was great in that small but important to the plot part.
The role was Charlie Halloran, Judge Harper's (Gene Lockhart) campaign manager. He's not on screen any more than 5 minutes, but for my dough, steels the movie.
Vivian and Bill's mutual contempt during the show wasn't evident when we watched reruns (maybe it helped them play married characters who weren't exactly friendly); it's something fans discovered when they delved into the show's lore and history. The one consistent thing I noticed on Mr. Frawley as landlord Fred was his shaky hand-- which might have been the effect of alcohol on the body.

It sounds like Vivian was very nasty to William. Perhaps William had it coming to him to some degree but it sounds like she was more the instigator. It is a shame their relationship was not better when they were alive.
@@ivokarmely453 There's probably much we don't know that went on at the time, from bickering costars to the little secrets and idiosyncrasies that the cast had. For instance, Desi wore shoes with thick heels to compensate for his height, and he preferred one particular side of his face be featured in most shots if possible.
Eduardo Corrochio indeed you are correct. This was not the first time that I had been informed that William and Vivian had issues with each other but from my reading and watching Jordan’s video that it seemed Vivian was more mean about it. But who knows what fully happened behind the scenes. Again it is too bad they did not evidently get along.
I like watching Jordan The Lion, I like the way he explains things, and most importantly his attitude, he looks like he would be fun to have as a friend.
I watched William Frawley in both "I Love Lucy^ & "My Three Sons" but didn't know the full story of William's sad troubling life. Thank you for that discussion.
Kind of sad. But, no one's perfect. I'm thankful for all the laughs he brought.
Frawley got along well with Desi and Lucy and they liked and appreciated him.

His age and cancer he had death knocking at his door. I'm not old and I find setting through a movie in a uncomfortable set very stressful so that could have helped the heart attack come on. I just pray he didn't go through a lot of fear when he was dying. R.I.P

Great vlog, I had read about the disdain that he and Vance had for one another but I didn't know it ran that deep. Knew he died of a heart attack but didn't know he had prostate cancer. Interesting about the syndication and the residuals, does that mean the hospital he donated half his estate to is still receiving checks?

This was a great vlog. I've always liked Bill Frawley. I knew he was a big drinker, and knew about he & Desi being good friends. I didn't know he was so difficult to work with.
I knew that Gale Gordon was Lucy's 1st choice to play Fred but he was committed to doing Our Miss Brooks. The role went to Bill who had helped Lucy get a lot of her start in Hollywood. Then the 1st choice to play Ethel was Bea Benaderet, the voice of Betty Rubble on the Flinstons. But Bea was committed to the The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show.
The actors were all extremely talented in their own right.
It was beyond tacky for Viv to exclaim "champagne for everyone " when Bill died. But this didn't mean Viv was evil or a bi***. Maybe she was, I don't know. I do know 2 things that Viv & Lucy were very good friends off stage. And I, like 99% of the folks commenting here, didn't personally know any of the ILL actors. These are stories, and great stories about old Hollywood actors that may have died before some of us were alive.
I'm really bothered by some of the comments about Viv, especially when the Vlogger repeatedly said that Bill was difficult to work with, and not just occasionally.

Yes, anyone who gains weight will look older, but only maybe 5 years older not like 20. Lol! She had to keep the weight on, in which they cast her for the show. They should have gone with another older lady (maybe 10 years younger than William) to prevent rediculous tantrums. Poor William Frawley who had to deal working with that woman.

Actress Elizabeth Patterson, who portrayed Mrs. Trumble on ILL, was one of Frawley's few friends. Miss Patterson also resided at the Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel at the same time as Frawley. Patterson is best known for her performances in 'TOBACCO ROAD' & 'DINNER AT EIGHT.'

Wondeful vlog! I enjoyed the NEON signs. I took a neon sign tour in Vancouver in 1999 or so (I am Canadian) and gained an appreciation for neon. Good to see something positive out of the US with all the negative press you are getting.

Harry Truman once said, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog". lol Maybe that applies to Hollywood as well. Sad that he didn't have many friends. I like his character on the show. My dad had a friend that we would see all the time name Dick Buright, who knowing I was a huge I Love Lucy fan told me about the time he was in Los Angeles in 1966 and had rushed up to help an old man that had fallen down, he and the male nurse tried to help him but he had had a bad heart attack and died, and that it was William Frawley. He said he died right there in his arms. Now knowing this man as I did, he was not somebody who made stories up at all. A very trustworthy guy
Jordan oh man great vlog I read Desi s autobiography years ago and his take on William Frawley was amazing just like this vlog !! Knickerbocker hotel involved with another demise !! He was a terrific character actor throughout the 40s ! The NYYankees anecdote was awesome! Still waiting for my Steve Keene pumped up !
I went to my moms for dinner the other day and she asked me to watch a cpl episodes of I Love Lucy. That show is still awesome to this day
In 2013 I worked as an extra at paramount and during a break I went and checked out Lucy park and Lucy's old office. And a few years before that I worked on That's so Raven at the Hollywood center studios on stage 6

I feel that Vivian Vance was the uppity one who wanted equal billing with Lucy. Really? Desi and Lucy built the studio, took all the chances, money etc. and it is a joke to think she was slighted cause she wanted equal billing. Sometimes people's egos are bigger than their talents - Yes, she did play a good foil for the Lucy character but that was her job - what she was getting paid to do!

Hi Jordan, I love seeing the old entrances to to the old Hollywood Studios. Isn't it funny, quite a few stars over the years have had the best chemistry on set yet completely disliked each other in real life, yet you would never have known. Such a shame that so many comedy actors who bought laughter to so many have such sad and tragic ends to their lives. Great vlog Jordan.

Barry Livingston who played Ernie on My Three Sons tells a story of how they used to film right next door to The Lucy Show. William would have him collect empty film canisters. They would listen as Lucy and Vivian would be filming a scene. As soon as Vivian would start to deliver her lines they would toss the empty canisters down the hall.
