I'm not from the states, I'm from England, and knew nothing of Barbara Walters until a few years ago. Since then I've seen many interviews that she's done, and I'm sorry, but she seems like a right royal b*tch in every interview I've ever seen.
Lucille Ball is one of the classiest women ever to grace the screen and the Earth. It puzzles me that some folks comment here and suggest she was bitter, when she remained friends with Desi for the children and was only being honest about what transpired between them as a married couple. Any married woman, particularly with children, should be upset when her husband is unfaithful. I think she put on a brave face for the public and her children. She obviously cared very much about her family and her fans. She was extremely talented, funny, beautiful and witty...but most importantly...compassionate and loving. Thanks for the memories Lucy. You were and always will be one of a kind. One of God's finest. An absolute treasure :-)
You have too look at life ,her eyes can't hide pain she .Lucy has lots of love even before and after . She just couldn't deal with Desi no more . What the two of them wanted and needed was lost along the way . But love never dies .
Probably because she sounded bitter and this, from decades earlier. Any classiness on the screen means nothing apart from that fact. She was an ACTRESS ffs.
One of my favorite things about Lucille Ball is how intelligent she was. She was a strong, intelligent woman with a legendary sense of humor and the sharpest business mind there was.
My mother didn’t speak English very well, but she loved watching “I Love Lucy”. Just the physical comedy and her facial expressions make her laugh. It was so cute to see!
I love how even though she was devastated about Desi's shortcomings and unfaithfulness she was still honest and gave him the credit he deserved for his accomplishments. It's hard work coparenting and seeing through your own bitterness to accept the ex and treat them fairly. Pain and disappointment has a way of clouding ones judgement. It takes a strong person to say my heart is broke but that's just how it is sometimes. We're all human and not a one of us is perfect.
She said there was something in Desi that made him destroy whatever he built up. Booze was the problem and from that, the womanizing and Lucy looked elsewhere for comfort. They were absolutely meant for each other if only the problems had been solved.
Oddly enough, she may have called him a loser but still had very positive things to say about Desi. You can even tell though she was hurt and you definitely can see she was still heartbroken but she still loved him. And Gary’s reactions definitely shows she needed to speak it all out like it was her way of healing but Lucy was never good at hiding her heart.
Gary was the strong and dependable man that Lucy needed. Their marriage was very happy, so Lucy had a happy ending. I think she always loved Desi, he was her great passion. But Gary gave her the stability she always craved.
I watch I love Lucy every single day. My mother passed away in 2021 and she looked so much like Lucille Ball and even acted zany and crazy like Lucy did on the show.
if you listen carefully to this interview....lucy resented desi for doing things that ruined their marraige but was still very much in love with him until the end.
Both Lucy and Lucille Ball will NEVER be forgotten. I say Lucy and Lucille Ball because they were two totally different people, even though they were the same person. Lucy was what you saw onscreen and Lucille Ball was whom you knew in person or in private. She had many many friends, was and still is loved by millions and millions of people and at least in my life time, will always be remembered. Sure she had her faults, we all do, we're all human. People say she could be very mean but they forget she was also very generous and encouraged people who she knew had talent and gave them great compliments, that's just how a lot of people are. But you could see after she left Desi that she was not the same person, even when she was being Lucy, part of her was gone, some of that spark was gone. She always looked and sounded a bit unhappy, like part of her was missing and Desi was the part of her that was missing, even though they remained friends and still loved each other very deeply, she never got over him and he never got over her. If Desi hadn't have been a drinker and a cheater, they would have stayed together. But no matter what type of person she was in private, which is none of our business, I still love and admire her.
I love the way Lucy expresses herself. She's so direct - no filler words, like, yeah, etc. She just tells it like it in with such eloquence and straight fowardness. I really admire women like that especially her to have broken the glass ceiling and paved the way for so many other women. God bless you Lucy!!
This is actually very sweet. You can tell Lucy and Gary are in love. Gary is so secure he sits there and says, it's all about Lucy. Not a hint of insecurity from him. Cute couple.
Lucy was on a plane in first class seating. The stewardess asked Lucy if she would like a drink. Lucy would not answer her. Lucy's aide told the stewardess that Lucy doesn't speak to the help! Sweet lady? Depends on your job description.
@@cathleenwilliamson6668 oh shush up. You're talking about some hearsay story from 50 years ago & that's enough for you to act like you've got her all figured out?
What Lucy was trying to say about Desi is that he was a self-destructive man and he pulled her down into the wreckage. For years after Lucy and Desi split, you could see the heartache and disappointment in her eyes, even when she tried to hide it. That kind of marriage changes you.
Alcoholic problèm it IS Come from genetic . Thèse people should not touch alcool . I 've found a documentary abouttm that. We can't understandthi type of problèm .Life IS not so est all thé Time .
That’s what all self-destructive people do, they pull you into their wreckage and can be very manipulative to get what they want!! Also blame you for ALL of their problems!!
@@nataliedeshow768 I never heard Desi blame Lucy for his alcoholism. He said that it was one of his greatest weaknesses - never to do things in moderation - when he played he played too hard, etc.
However, Desi somehow had a very weird perception about his sexual addictions - saying what's wrong Lucy saying his sexual habits had nothing to do with his love for her. Being away from home, days or weeks at a time, certainly did not look like love. Heard in interviews from a family friend that Desi, long after he was divorced, would come over and cry saying he still loved Lucy and wished they had never gotten divorced. I understand that his 2nd wife, Edith, was lovely and good for him but she was thinking of divorcing him because of his addictions (sex, boozeI, etc) Apparently Desi had two women who loved him and I think he loved both of them too - but could not stop his addictive behaviors.
@@libertygiveme1987 She didn't say that to imply Lucy was a bad person though, just that she ran a tight ship and expected her kids to do their bit too. Nothing wrong with that.
Yeah, now days, they try to make sure everyone's so "politically correct" that you can't even expect a fluid interview. The dummys now days would probably label Lucielle Ball a "bully" if this interview was done recently lol
When Lucy died I felt as if I'd lost a family member and cried. She is without a doubt the GREATEST comedy actress of the 20th Century because she was not funny, as she says in real life, and therefore was so incredibly convincing with a script!! RIP!
Mark Whitman No kidding. How remarkable is it to feel ANY emotion on the death of a complete stranger?? Gotta be something special to get that reaction from people.
Mark Whitman, I, too, cried like she was a family member. I guess in a way, she was a member of my family; she visited me once a week! I ran to the television in our living room every Monday night and watched her show! I loved her laughter! I’m so thankful for the reruns! She’s still the visitor that I can enjoy on television today!
She was such a very straight forward woman. Never said anything she didn't mean and she always meant what she said. Her way of speaking was the way most other people should strive for. Very serious speaking woman. You can tell she understood a lot about lifes struggles and high points.
I've heard this interview before. However I never appreciated her candor and raw honesty. I judged her harshly before. She was a gutsy no nonsense broad. She was real .Thank you Lucy.
God she was stunning. And Desi was very handsome. Beautiful couple. They had a beautiful love story, it's ashame he could not stay faithful. He really broke her heart 💔
@@BAKER22-l4u Dude chill. I agree with the original commenter, but you're entitled to your opinions. That doesn't mean insulting someone for fucking aging naturally, though
Desi did apologize to Lucy for all the pain that he did cause her. Yes it is understandable Lucy speaks of resentment. However, Lucy did forgive ,him and they maintained a strong friendship it was not for their kids it was for them as well. Lucy was truly an amazing woman.
Yeah....I think she's just blunt. Even when she said he was a "loser", she said he had to lose everything to realize what he had. She just doesn't sugarcoat everything, like people nowadays.
@@lemurianchick I agree...she meant & said he agreed that the “loser” part meant that he had to lose everything he had! Probably deep down he had subconscious programming that told him he didn’t deserve what he had & there it all went. As you’ve said...self-defeating attitude. I call it self-sabotage programming. I did like them both!
I’m 26 years old I was 13 when I started watching her in the 2000s nobody understood why I was so Intrigued by the show. However I find that she was absolutely a great comedian & knew how to make people laugh of all ages.
ferndog681 she loved him always. There is no love like your first love. But sometimes other things get in the way. Self sabotaging is difficult to live with.
Because during that time she thought she will get through her entirely life with him geting old together. But desi dissapoint her and her hope. People can forgive but cant forget. Most of us want to have long marriage but destiny goes that way we cannot do anything.. Love lucy so much she was a strong lovely woman.
She always said long after the divorce, Desi has a piece of her heart, but its a shame he didn't get the help he needed cuz his addictions & attitude would often turn him into a ragging a-hole...but he sure was likable but ungrateful.
She had to divorce him because he wouldn’t stop cheating on her or drinking. He was jealous of her because she was the star of the show. I’m sure it was very painful but she had to protect herself and she did end up in a very happy marriage. Sometimes you are better off friends then spouses. Doesn’t mean the love isn’t there as she and a Desi were great friends to the end.
Simple music can make you sing, simple hug can make you feel better and simple thing can make you happy. i hope my simple "Hello" bring smile on your face 😊
Years ago I found a copy of Desi Arnaz's book in a thrift store that was signed and bought it for that reason. It was fascinating and full of behind the scenes stuff and I was surprised to see that he took full responsibility for his cheating and destroying their marriage. He even talks about hiring Vivian Vance on the spot after seeing her in a play and Lucy being furious because she thought he hired some bombshell that he could fool around with but was thrilled when she met Viv and they became best of friends. He also was told not to hire William Frawley because he was an alcoholic but he wanted him anyway and warned him that if he ever even suspected him of drinking while on set he would fire him immediately but that Frawley never did in all those years.
***** Well from what I've read they were very good friends. I think that is backed up by the fact that Viv was the only person she brought with her on her new show. It did say something to the effect that Lucy once gave Vivian a lifetime contract but in it said that Viv could never weigh less then Lucy which was meant as a joke.
I think dezi was the great love of her life but she found a good husband that didn't cheat and she could trust so she found things she could love about him and fell in love with those things.
1st he is a man, they all cheat. 2nd Lucy met her 2nd husband late in his years. I'm sure he was a playboy in his younger days. Hes very handsome and tall. :)
Yes and doesn't look like she had to have much done as her face looks no different to her very early years, she did t change her features good bone structure I guess too
Alma Quezada They are very subtly referring to the known risk of having a Down Syndrome baby which dramatically increase after age 40. It was a risk for her at 39, but even more so when she was having Dezi Jr. two years later. This is why Lucy says her doctor didn’t want to “frighten” her with the thought of such a possibility since she had already had miscarriages. She obviously didn’t need the added stress.
This is so brilliant to watch, all these years later, I actually went to her house on Roxbury in Beverley hills in 1977 being a 16 yr old kid and rang the doorbell to try to get an autograph from Lucy, but a man who I believe was Gary Morton opened the peephole and said she wasn't home, ...so I never got to meet her or even get an autograph but it was an interesting experience...I still love Lucy💗
You most likely would not like her as a person though. Nor you would wanted to be her friend. She was tough, ruthless, Business-minded and wanted everything her way. It makes a great entertainer and business-woman but not a great person.
@@BruceLee-t9n WELL back then you had to be ruthless, tough, and have everything done your way the entertainment world 🌎 didn't have many like her but Hollywood is unpredictable
i wish i would have gotten to know her on a personal level....she is raw and honest and just straight forward...i love that....i hope she was happy with Gary and the remaining years of her life....she deserved it
Bullshit, jon3. She was notorious for being extremely hard working, inclusive and very kind. She was famous for not acting like a star, she really hated the Hollywood assholes. She supported women and men and especially younger actors in the trade. What she couldn't stand were drunks who drank while they were supposed to be working. Burton being a classic, sloppy, drunken-fuck pig got his ass bounced off of her sets several times. He was no professional, and she didn't want to deal with him. She was more successful in her life than he ever was. Nutjob my ass, you stupid twunt.
Being a women Hollywood they had to be tough. Lucy may have been a bitch. She still gave us great work that so many people enjoy. Richard Burton for his hard life died early in life
I think both Desi and Lucy loved each other to the end; but fortunately, their divorce worked and after awhile they became friends again and were there for each other if needed.
My mother worked for Lucille Ball in the 1960s-70s and eventually met and knew the real story behind all the people discussed in this interview along with many of the most famous celebrities that Lucy was friends with, but I gotta say that everyone here is passing blame for some things that they don't know anything about! We as the public and fans can only comment on how we feel about their work. Not their personal lives, we weren't there, we don't know the specifics that led to certain feelings and actions in their lives. Another thing that I can say is that, having worked for some big names in Hollywood is that I was always surprised in how different these people were from what the public thought of them. Or, what the media sold to the public.
@@stitchgirl9741 Yes, my mom always said that Lucy lived in peace with Gary Morton but the love of her life was Desi and that he always felt the same way about her. My mother understood her boss very well, since, our dad was a serial philanderer, and asked for a divorced after 7 years and raised us on her own.
I will always love and respect Lucy. She was so beautiful and smart! Who's watching in 2020? Barbara asked some stupid questions! I always wondered how she was so well known.
@@salfordiandy4987 seriously? That is her JOB. Nobody likes reporters, especially when they are about in depth interviews. As I just mentioned. This interview was so weak as it included so much of her talentless children, yet not a word of her costars you could drive a truck through its worthlessness. Bar can be a great interviewer BUT this one.... Not so good.
There is comedic gold out there right now being made every day, but nothing will ever be like I Love Lucy. It was the perfect show. How rare it is to find comedy based on such simplicity. I love how it never relied on sex and people getting hurt for the sake of comedy.
When they went to see Elvis perform Elvis forgot Gary's name when introducing them to audience so he said "Here we have miss Lucille ball and her husband... Mr. Ball..." Lol!
Lucille Ball was a woman who didn't suffer fools, she called it like how she saw it. I appreciated her bluntless towards Desi and consider what she went through in her entire life, she was a beauty, a clown and through it all, tough as nails.
I saw I Love Lucy when it first came out (our first tv) in 1951; am still watching the same, also The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy 2022. Loved the Fabulous 4 and still do. Thank you Lucy, Desi, Vivian and Bill Frawley. You gave us so much laughter. I have not owned a tv for years - see shows on my MacBook lap top. What a live saver Covid-19 pandemic. Also, have seen many of Lucille Ball's movies - black and white and in color. Only two I didn't like: Critics Choice with Bob Hope and The Magic Carpet - there is a hilarious story behind the latter movie and why Lucy made it full knowing what a stinker it was. Also Bob Hope and Lucy made 4 movies together and they both say we don't talk about THAT one meaning - Critics Choice.
That's nothing to admire. She clearly had very little self-worth to stay with a serial cheater for 19 years. It's not like he had a couple of affairs here and there, he was having orgies with hookers and would flirt with every attractive woman in sight, sometimes right in front of her. This went on for the entire marriage.
ohwell94 No. Lucy was not difficult. She was demanding. Insecure, because as the head of Desi Lu after the divorce, she was totally in charge of Every Production on That Lot including a new series back then, Star Trek!
I said what I said No,no no. I was around in those days. Times were so different, not at all like today. One did not get divorced even in a abusive marriage. Lucy was such a consummate professional. Lucy made her own way from the ground up, cycling from stage to stage offering to take any part available. She learned from fabulous people like Buster Keaton. Insecure? Most actors are, but Lucy gave 100% always. It took television to showcase her great talents.
@@nottoomuch87 Back in those days women didn't run to the divorce court for unacceptable behavior or call the cops on their husbands when they got violent ...they accepted a lot because of the stigma of getting a divorce...often times they were in denial...But Lucy must have really loved him that's all I gotta say...she may also be one of those ppl who feared change...I couldn't take a fraction of what my mother was put through by my dad...its just a generational thing I guess.
Lucille Ball, The Queen of Comedy, The Queen of television. You can not get better than Lucille Ball. Her and her husband's home seems so warm and comforting.
Simple music can make you sing, simple hug can make you feel better and simple thing can make you happy. i hope my simple "Hello" bring smile on your face 😊
Lucy was a trooper up's and down's in her life. Very strong woman. Excellent Actress. Beautiful in every way!! This was a great interview Barbara Walters!❤
I wish Lucy could have lived longer to do an interview with Emmy TV Legends. Would have been amazing to do like a 4-5 hour interview on her craft, her co-stars, running a studio, etc.
Agree ... however ... "a 4-5 hour interview..." ... get real. It has been my experience that (shall we say) a 90 year old person would probably have fallen asleep after 30 minutes interview ...
I don't think she was madly in love with Desi? I think she put their marriage for what it was in perspective. She acknowledged's he wasn't going to change & cut him loose? Gary more trustworthy & secure but not the same passion. Gary married again not long after her death.
I think Gary and Lucy were happy - both got what they wanted in the marriage. Lucy said Gary was funny and made her laugh, he did not interfere with the relationship she had with Desi (they talked on the phone almost weekly - about their kids or her shows or about Desilu Studios.) Also Gary had a good relationship with her kids - and in no way interfered in their relationship with their father. Most importantly, he was faithful. In the beginning Desi was jealous re Gary - who was married to his wife. But after a few years, he married Edith and they too had a good marriage. Gary and Desi then golfed together fairly regularly.
I have been watching I Love Lucy Reruns again lately on Paramount Plus every night and it really makes me feel good! That show is timeless and will go on forever!
I was 6 years old in 1951 when I Love Lucy came out. watched it then and watch it now; in fact, it got me thru covid - saw all the seasons and all the episodes and some more than once. Even now, once and awhile will go back to a favorite episode. Still laugh. Loved The Fabulous Four
Thank you Lucy for all the laughs you gave me when I was a child (late 90s) when I feel lonesome I still flip on the hall mark channel or tv land And laugh at her shenanigans!
I love Lucy is still watched in 2021, the writing and comedic timing transcends over the years. Laugh out loud and connecting to Lucy is what makes it great.
Mittens Biscuits Actually, looking back her toughness seems like a cover for being really a needy, insecure, good hearted brave woman who had to make her own way in the world, always. She needed a partner who would be as strong as she was. I don’t know if she ever entirely got that. Lucy was a solid gold friend to all of us baby boomer kids in the Fifties. As well as the world!
@@marjoriemargel1567 She gave Desi his career, not to say he wasn't talented, but she insisted that the studio hire him, without her I really doubt we would have ever heard about Desi..I don't think he appreciated that, based on his excessive cheating & verbal abuse towards Lucy...Oh I get its a macho thing in his culture but he was very ungrateful..Lucy took care of her mother & for a short time her dad...he died soon after her fame...& they always had to take care of Desi's mother too, who was a spoil prima donna ...Lucy had a wonderful mother who always believed in her, even when an acting school in NY kicked her out cuz they didn't think she had what it takes!! ha!! idiotic school that was!! Betty Davis was even in class & was a big B to Lucy.
Well it’s 2021 and I bet she never thought we would still be watching I love Lucy!! I long for days like it was then, this world is completely different and insane!!!! Nothing is wholesome or what’s right. I love this show and always will❤️❤️❤️
Wow! Just wow, I loved Lucy growing up watching on nick at night and I still love Lucy today at 42 yrs old. Also look at Barbra, so young. I loved this interview ❤️
I love Lucy and Desi...I dont care about their of screen problems.. thats the way life is sometimes. they were both great...so was vivian vance and william frawley
Vivian Vance and William Frawley were great together... but in real life couldn't stand each other. Go back and rewatch some of the clips when they "fight" on the show, and it all puts it into a new perspective.
it is so obvious that she was still deeply in love with desi..... gary was the trophy husband....tall dark, handsome n 13 yrs younger....believe she grew to love him but there is major difference btwn love & in love ..
well said...well said...i 2nd that emotion and agree 1k percent.....anytime lucille discusses desi her face lights up...lucy and desi had a passionate relationship....over the course of their 20yr marriage lucille filed for divorce mny times....it became part of a cycle..i believe part of this cycle was lucille loved the attention desi showered on her everytime she filed for divorce....the very last time lucille filed....desi did not run after her nor did he try to change her mind...i think Lucille was thrown by this and took it as a sign the desi no longer loved her....and i believe that his actions were because he did love her but now that the kids were invovled he did not want to subject them to loud agruments and ongoing tension btwn their parents....he recognized that he was a serial cheater and had no desire to change that behavior.....anytime a man cheats..his women always asks..what does she have that i dont(bigger booty/breasts)....what does she do for you sexually that i dont.....when any man cheats it has absolutely nothing to do with the women and everything to do with the man...
My kids are in their 30s and up, and even my three-year-old granddaughter loves I Love Lucy. I think that is a show that will last and be popular for generations to come.
Even as a little girl born in the early 80's, Lucy had a huge impact on me. I watched her shows before bed on Nickelodeon. She was a source of happiness in my complicated little life. RIP Lucy & Barbara. Two beautiful TV legends.
Hollywood people aren't like that anymore. Now they only care about the money and the "me" quality. "Look at ME" "Look at what I'M doing" "I make lots and lots and lots of money that i dont deserve and i could care less about my fans and once a year i "help" feed the homeless for publicity, so I can prove that I'M a great person"....thats all it is now
I know. That's a shame. I love Lucille. She was one of a kind. I remember watching I love Lucy as a kid in the 90's. Well you definitely can't compare her to the stars of today. She was the best :) Never failed to put a smile on my face or make me laugh
Lovingyewischerrypie My family and I family watched 'I Love Lucy' (etc.) in the 1950's, as the episodes cam out, when I was a little kid of about 8 ! It is just great to be able to see the many episodes again after all this time. I wish they would put them on T.V. again : might teach the modern comedians about doing humour.....?!
Gary and Desi got along fine, and Gary even called Desi his husband in law. As for Lucy's voice, she had a lower voice before doing I Love Lucy (though not the foghorn voice she had later); she said in an interview that she used a higher voice as the Lucy character to accentuate her innocent and childlike qualities. If you heard her in the "My Favorite Husband" radio series that she acted in (and which was used for the basis of I Love Lucy, right down to recycling the plot lines) you will hear her natural voice, which was lower. It is also evident in her movies.
Well, good for her. I know it's not ez quitting smoking and certainly having a stroke would be THE incentive to stop. She was a wonderful comedienne, mother and American icon. RIP Lucille Ball. Shalom.
It's near the end of 2021 and Lucille Ball's views on television is still relevant to this day. There is a lot of unhappy things we watch but I think that's why "I Love Lucy" will forever remain on television and even on platforms like TH-cam because we need it. We need to find more reasons to cry from laughter and joy than to cry from sadness and pain. Even with Lucy and Desi, there was still love there, it just changed from romantic to family and friendship. It was the exact way with my Grandparents, my Dad's parents. Even after their divorce, they still respected and loved each other as family, as co-parents. And while my parents' marriage is nothing like the Ricardos, it does kind of remind me of the ethnic differences of my parents. My Dad being Irish and my Mom being Mexican. Two different cultures merging together. Lucy being Scottish and Ricky being Cuban, I'm like: "Come on, of course it could work.". LOL My parents have been married for 43 years and counting, it could work. 🤷🏻♀️
Well said, in fact, beautifully summed up. "their relationship changed from romantic to family and friendship". If they had stayed together the anger that both had before they divorced was tearing them both apart and would have shattered their ability to parent.
Getting over your first love is never easy and I don’t think anyone ever quite moves on from their first love. It was clear she still loved Desi, but she also cherished and cared for Gary. He knew that and he still took the reigns and took such good care of her right til the end. I admire them both, such lovely people we’ll always remember ❤️
It's so sad she is still not with us anymore, what wonderful, loveable, zany memories!!!......... RIP Lucy from a fan who still loves you and always will.
I grew up as many of us did watching I Love Lucy. She was my babysitter. When Lucy passed away I lost my best friend. I have had the privilege of living in New York State and have gone to her grave site where she is buried with her parents, her aunts her grand parents and great grandparents there are some cousins there too. The grave site is very modest and her head stone on one side simply has the I Love Lucy insignia with the heart. Truly a person I loved dearly as well as Desi
I Loved Lucy: The Fabulous Four -- Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley. However other than the show, the only one I really loved as a person always was Lucille Ball.
You know without a doubt that Lucy is being completely honest .and what she has to say is interesting. A far cry from much later BW exclusive interviews when the main topic was rehab and 'I'm clean now' crap. How I miss Golden era Hollywood stars! Thankfully we still have these interviews. Cheers for upload.
I was not expecting to learn so much wisdom from her interview. She was constantly recreating herself throughout her life. I am going to go and lookup the man she mentioned Norman Vincent Peale.
She was quite the lady. The day she died, boy did my tears fall! I felt like I had truly lost a friend that day. My Mom loved her, and I grew up watching Lucy many times a week. Such great times!!
I remember watching the “I love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” reruns as a kid. I also watched “Here’s Lucy” while it was on the air. She’s always made me laugh and I’m still laughing at those old shows! She definitely was a woman ahead of her time!
This was before the Kardashians. This was "reality" tv in it's primitive state. Lucy and Dezi paved the way for what we're watching on tv today. Pretty amazing how they pretty much built an empire that would still have an impact on people today. Who's going to be watching Hogan knows best or brooke knows best or keeping up with the kardashians 60 years from now? We'll still be watching I Love Lucy though.
I hardly think so...This is a scripted show with a team of writers & not at all based on the reality of their real life...except for the fact that Desi was her real life husband,..The real Desi was a crummy husband.... the reality was he was a terrible heavy boozer, serial cheater who loved hookers! & was verbally abusive towards Lucy...Despite the fact that she was the one who gave him his career & supported her mother & his mother....oh and Desi was a gambler too, & not a good one!
They talk about having a child at 39 as if it was so old. My mom had me at 41 and I hated the stigma behind it. I'm happy I had a mature responsible woman as a mother when I was born. Not an ignorant teenager.
back then most married in their early 20's and had children before 30....by 39 having a child was unheard of...these days it common to have children in the mid 40's....my sis n i are 25yrs apart...my mom n dad married soon after high school n she had my sister within yr at 18...she said mny times she did not think she wld have any more children...at 39 she had my sister and then had 4 more kids each year after....at 49...she had a miscarriage while doing the laundry....she said not only did she not have a clue she was pregnant...at 49 she did not even think it was possible she cld even get pregnant...not only cld i not have asked for a more caring n loving mom....my mom n dad had their issues but were married well ovr 50yrs..
Kay2be2mr I believe Lucy had lost a few babies before her daughter was born....she must have been so overwhelmed by being a new mother after trying for so long...
lucy has said in mny interviews she was afraid she wld spoil them to much....little known fact...luci n desi has three boilogical childred(a Girl)...this prior to their marriage and her camp felt she ruin her career having a child out of wedlock...she lyed low n when the child was born and they arranged in advance to help with child financially.....when the daugher gave birh to her daughter...lucy was there ti share the xperience
Kay2be2mr They had a total of 4 misscairages not only that last one so those two kids must have deep deep meaning. My point is she didnt say i dont blame her.
I love how Lucy doesn't let Barbara take advantage of Lucy in this interview AND holds her own; strong and self-conscious woman/Business woman 👏

You know you struck gold when people are STILL laughing at this show in 2021. We love you Lucy, Vivian, Fred, and Desi!

And in 2023! I still ❤️ Lucy!
2023 ❤❤❤
2023! Too
And here it is 2023 and I still watch the reruns everyday. I crack up every time.

None ya Business yes you’re right.
@None ya Business If you're going to call someone an idiot, you may want to display spelling and grammar skills greater than an elementary school kid.
Way ahead of her time.
This is one of the most relaxed interviews I’ve ever seen Lucille Ball give. You can tell Gary gave her a lot of comfort and stability.
She was snockered.
My mother didn’t speak English very well, but she loved watching “I Love Lucy”. Just the physical comedy and her facial expressions make her laugh. It was so cute to see!
My grandmother too!! We are Ukrainian and she never learned English but she loved Lucy and would laugh a lot when watching her.
I love how it translates all over the world 😊
my dad too! he’s Mexican and doesn’t speak english but he loved “I Love Lucy”
❤
I love how even though she was devastated about Desi's shortcomings and unfaithfulness she was still honest and gave him the credit he deserved for his accomplishments. It's hard work coparenting and seeing through your own bitterness to accept the ex and treat them fairly. Pain and disappointment has a way of clouding ones judgement. It takes a strong person to say my heart is broke but that's just how it is sometimes. We're all human and not a one of us is perfect.
Me too! She did the right thing even though he caused her great pain.
Lucy told the truth!
The respect she has for him is amazing
I think you are absolutely right.
Agreed. I think Desi was the love of her life tho.
I think they both took eachothers hearts to their graves.......Xx
Desi said the biggest mistake in his life was losing Lucy. He loved her and in the end that was his biggest mistake.

I watch I love Lucy every single day. My mother passed away in 2021 and she looked so much like Lucille Ball and even acted zany and crazy like Lucy did on the show.
Lucy was so dark, so real, and so smart. What a raw and honest interview. Thank you for making this available!
Dark? I don't think she was a dark person at all, but she was not funny in her everyday life.

BUT OF COURSE, LUCY LOVED DESI UNTIL THE END. OF COURSE SHE DID. AND HE LOVED HER.

Hello Jane How are you doing?
@Laurel she was funny but nothing like Lucy.
No, there won't
She's my favorite television's redhead.
Every generation has one
Love how she talks with such authority and confidence
Yep. From all I’ve seen of her, she was a no-nonsense, no-bs firm and tough woman who wasn’t to be messed with
All that confidence was because she was crocked at interviews. A nightmare to fly with. She degraded stewardesses in the worst way.

Also , I heard Gary was hung like a horse. It was huge supposedly.

What Lucy was trying to say about Desi is that he was a self-destructive man and he pulled her down into the wreckage. For years after Lucy and Desi split, you could see the heartache and disappointment in her eyes, even when she tried to hide it. That kind of marriage changes you.

I understand that his 2nd wife, Edith, was lovely and good for him but she was thinking of divorcing him because of his addictions (sex, boozeI, etc) Apparently Desi had two women who loved him and I think he loved both of them too - but could not stop his addictive behaviors.

ferndog681 she loved him always.
As the saying goes, Desi was his own worst enemy.

Gary Morton was an incredible, supportive, and loving husband for Lucille Ball.
he was an opportunist.
He also was told not to hire William Frawley because he was an alcoholic but he wanted him anyway and warned him that if he ever even suspected him of drinking while on set he would fire him immediately but that Frawley never did in all those years.
ronnie rodriguez Thank you for sharing!

***** The title was "A Book By Desi Arnaz".
So fascinating.

When Lucy was allowed to mature into womanhood.. that is when she found her excellent non self serving husband in Gary Morton.

Lucy was extremely difficult to work with by all accounts but not with Desi..she trusted his instincts without question...

Desi was a POS.
@@spitfirestake54 no a pos is somebody that talks bad about somebody that is dead and gone.
@@LuckyC555 whatever
How awkward Lucy must have felt to be asked personal questions about Desi in FRONT of Gary.

We're Lucy fans, we all know that.
dabigdikdangler Not all Lucy fans know that, but thank you fact-check police.

Don't be so late.
Seriously, just stop.
u could tell Desi meant a lot to her I'm not sure she ever got over him
it is so obvious that she was still deeply in love with desi..... gary was the trophy husband....tall dark, handsome n 13 yrs younger....believe she grew to love him but there is major difference btwn love & in love
..
i completely agree! it shows on her face.
well said...well said...i 2nd that emotion and agree 1k percent.....anytime lucille discusses desi her face lights up...lucy and desi had a passionate relationship....over the course of their 20yr marriage lucille filed for divorce mny times....it became part of a cycle..i believe part of this cycle was lucille loved the attention desi showered on her everytime she filed for divorce....the very last time lucille filed....desi did not run after her nor did he try to change her mind...i think Lucille was thrown by this and took it as a sign the desi no longer loved her....and i believe that his actions were because he did love her but now that the kids were invovled he did not want to subject them to loud agruments and ongoing tension btwn their parents....he recognized that he was a serial cheater and had no desire to change that behavior.....anytime a man cheats..his women always asks..what does she have that i dont(bigger booty/breasts)....what does she do for you sexually that i dont.....when any man cheats it has absolutely nothing to do with the women and everything to do with the man...
they both remained very good friends. Sometimes its better to be apart instead of fighting.

I guess anyone would fight
if there husband was sleeping
around. never home
Jennifer
Her husband seemed like a nice guy.
My kids are in their 30s and up, and even my three-year-old granddaughter loves I Love Lucy. I think that is a show that will last and be popular for generations to come.
I still watch all the Lucy Desi episodes today.
Even as a little girl born in the early 80's, Lucy had a huge impact on me. I watched her shows before bed on Nickelodeon. She was a source of happiness in my complicated little life. RIP Lucy & Barbara. Two beautiful TV legends.
Sameeee
Such a classy, iconic woman ♥ A rare quality these days
Was she a smoker?
2dasimmons
Yes
2dasimmons She was a chain smoker and she quit smoking in 1986 after she had a stroke
Well, good for her. I know it's not ez quitting smoking and certainly having a stroke would be THE incentive to stop. She was a wonderful comedienne, mother and American icon. RIP Lucille Ball. Shalom.
That's because she smoked!!
I love Lucy shows, she makes me happy every time I feel alone or sad....
Philippines 2019
If they had stayed together the anger that both had before they divorced was tearing them both apart and would have shattered their ability to parent.
...............and I'm not talking about Scrabble !
Lucy, Lucy, Lucy
Getting over your first love is never easy and I don’t think anyone ever quite moves on from their first love. It was clear she still loved Desi, but she also cherished and cared for Gary. He knew that and he still took the reigns and took such good care of her right til the end. I admire them both, such lovely people we’ll always remember ❤️
I grew up watching Lucy. I will always love her more after watching this. Thank you !!!
Hello Laura, How are you doing?
Bree Davis Lucy starred in a 1985 movie as a homeless woman. It is here on YT.
@@plalelal Yes! The movie is called Stone Pillow. (Sorry, I know this is six years later and you probably already knew the name of it, lol ;) )
I can't stand Barbara Walters. She interrupts and you can tell Lucy gets flustered with her. RIP Ms. Lucille Ball. Thank you for the laughter.
also I get distracted by Barbara's speech impediment - "the gweat Lucille ball".
Exactly; not a top-rate interviewer
She is annoying.
This was a great interview. She was a wonderful mother to her only two kids.
Just thinking about Lucy for some reason today. RIP, Lucy! You have not been forgotten.
So true. Class always wins in the long run. Today's reality show members are trashy overly flashy and straight to the trash material.
+Kay2be2mr Back then 39 was quite old to start having babies. Unlike today when some women start having babies in their 40s.
Kay2be2mr They had a total of 4 misscairages not only that last one so those two kids must have deep deep meaning. My point is she didnt say i dont blame her.
When recovering from major surgery I became so immersed and comforted watching every rerun every day. My husband as well. The magic is real for me.
Lucy was so talented and also absolutely stunning into her old age. What a gift she and desi were to all of us
She was only 66 here.
