    Thank you so much Joey!!!
    My 8 Speed MRX Grip Shift shifter was failing on my TREK Hardtail MTN Bike. I had previously installed the Grip Shift because the thumb shifter were painful on my older thumbs. However, when I bought the 3x8 set the cables were already routed. I picked up the replacement today and the new cable was wound up next to the shifter, but not routed. OH NO - I don't know what to do and it probably won't work anyway, and .....
    I watched your video and the last one was of my Grip Shift and after a couple of tries and watching and being encouraged to keep trying - IT WORKED!!!!
    Thank you. I really appreciate the help Joey. Merry Christmas!!!

    I have a gripshift on my Dahon folding bike like at 5:20. Eventually I managed to push the cable trough after a lot of trying. It turned out I have to put it on gear 1 instead of 7, since my derailleur has 'reversed tension': low tension is low gear, high tension is high gear. So the shifter als has the numbers 1-7 reversed. It seemed to work best when the cable is entirely straight and it helped a bit pushing on the light grey plastic on the other side of where the cable should come out

    There will be some way to buy the covers of the changes of the bicycle. because those changes that they sell on the internet are of poor quality they are not at all... please help if you know the nomenclature to find them on amazon or ebay!!!!

    where the heck did the spring go that fell out? He didn't put it back in, or it didn't show him putting it in, he didn't test the gears after so we don't know if they work or not, not a good video sorry.

    • @JoeyMesa

      I put the spring back in place off camera. I started the process over with the shifter on my work bench. you can see the spring in place at the 2:34 point in the video.

  • @nightlightabcd
    @nightlightabcd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I must have watched a dozen of these videos on how to fix a twist shifter, and not a single one shows anything like mine. There are NO screws on my piece of Shamno crap! I was obviously a sucker when I bought my Chinese made so called Schwinn piece of crap!

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's an actual Shimano shifter, you should be able to google the model number (it's generally stamped under the shifter) and get service information for that particular shifter. Some of these shifters without screws pop apart with a flathead screwdriver, but worse case, a new grip shift shifter replacement is only about $15

    Hello there,
    I bought an old khs montana decent today and i want to restore it. Im completely new to this and ran into my first problem. The sram grip esp 5.0 shifters are broken and i want.to replace them with normal push/pull shifters. Do you know wich model i could use instead of the ezp 5.0.
    Greetings from.the netherlands,
    Steven

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how many cogs or speeds are on your rear wheel. Sram offers the X series of trigger shifters (X.3, X.4, Etc.). Just find the one that matches the one with the number of gears you have. For example, this X.4 trigger set works for a 3x8 system (3 rings on the crank and 8 cogs on the rear wheel) amzn.to/3icxY11

    Could greasing this twist shifter and changing cable fix a bike that only shifts up, but doesn’t shift down?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly. The little spring may be in backwards as well.

  • @Daniel-bv2wc
    @Daniel-bv2wc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just pop the spring out..then no clear reference on how to relocate the spring or put the shifter back together with the housing..

    I have a falcon 3 speed hub. The shifter needs replacing. My issue is, that both ends of my cable have an inline lead barrel. The lead barrel unclips from the grip shifter through a slot. What replacement shifter will allow this, can be a thumb shifter ?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really familiar with Falcon 3 speed hubs or shifters. If it's the same cable pull between shifts as a Shimano 3 speed, you should have many more options.

      I understand Joey.. I didn't fault your Video, I just don't like working on recent Grip Shift! The very early models were much simpler and easier to work on! Similar to the Thumb Shifters of their time - Slide in, and Pull out, is all it took to replace the Cables. Anyways, I do like your Videos! It brings me back to my Glory Days working in a Bike Shop! 80's & 90's

    thanks 4 the vid.
    sometimes i simply hate all this cycling industry.
    i absolutely looks like a way to help those 'bike shops' make money out of me. like they couldn't standardize construction so that another bike = another tool set.
    and whatever they make looks like it's done that on purpose - to make it as difficult as possible to do anything with that cassette/derailleur/cable/whatnot. sole purpose to make sure pplz will have 2 pay for special keys/wrenches etc.
    well... capitalism... :sigh:
