The thing I love about these Park Tool videos is that they cover all kinds of equipment - not just the high end stuff. Well done, as always, and thank you.
Incredible time, effort and resources put in to a topic that 95% of people looking for shifter help will never watch. But for those of us in the 5% group, this is an absolute lifesaver. Thanks Calvin, and especially the content and production team at Park Tool. You folks are doing extraordinary work..
experiencing full-blown sense memories of changing my cables back in the mid-90s, trying to reassemble the small pieces, and then not properly setting the cable and starting it all over. love that this is out there for people now 😊
Every time I encounter those SRAM twist apart shifters I say never again. Never understand why the manufacturer can't design a product with servicing in mind. They turn a reasonably quick job into a tedious time consuming one. I have found that on Revoshift the retaining tabs can be brittle after a time so be careful they may break. Thanks for another excellent video.
I'm working on a very old diamond back with these shifters and it's being a pain. The shift collar does not just "pull off", even with prying with a screwdriver. I had to pull the unit out, remove the clamp collar and set screw, and pry each of the four lock levers why pulling the two parts apart. I can see his recommendation to just buy a new shifter with cable installed. A shifter is about $10 and if I were in a shop my labor would be much more that that.
Could you do a video on bolts ? Steel, stainless steel, aluminum and titanium bolts pros and cons and if you should thread lock or use grease. There are as many opinions as there are bikers out there I think.
It's the no name ones with plastic retaining piece that takes 4 hours to release, breaks, then the 2 inch spring flies out, gets lost on the garage floor... that's the one that needs to be burned from existence
i have determined that twist shiffters are simply a maintenance abomination. Save yourself the grief...avoid them to begin with, or switch them out at the first opportunity.

This video is absurdly good. Literally gave me the confidence to know I can make the repair.
The fact you included every type of shifter. You the real MVP.

These are the best instruction video I have seen. Do you have a video on how to open a Microshift grip shifter? Mine is stuck and wouldn't twist.

Was researching on the "How to" on this rotary shifter. There's like a dozen videos but when I saw KALVIN's face the search was over.
Thanks for a very useful video and great to see you've found a new job after leaving Sparks.
Microshift is like 20 seconds and Sram is half an hour video, that says it all haha
Thanks for that tutorial on gripshift. You solved my problem 😂 yeah. Yaaaajoooooo 😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very much! I managed to fix it thanks to the vid!!
Nice, I just recognized the SRAM shifter used in my folding bike. Thankfully it's one of the easier types and will work on it soon. Thanks!
You guys are lifesavers, thank you!
Thank you very much for this outstanding video ❤❤!
You guys rock! Thanks
Great Video, Thank you.
SRAM X9 on a few recumbents. Thanks from Driftless SW WI
This should be mandatory veiwng for any Free Bikes 4 Kids mechanics. So many grip shifters.
So many....
Thank you it is fantastic

Best way to replace grip shift cables is to remove the grip shift and throw it directly in the trash.
My thoughts exactly. The price for a pair is inexpensive and they already come loaded with cables.
I have a Shimano Revoshift but instead of a derailleur I have a Nexus internal gear set. Could you explain how to connect the cable to it? Thanks!
Visit si dot shimano dot com and enter the model number of your hub into the search field.
Bonjour Calvin , Avec vous c'est tellement beau ° ) ☺
I just replace them lol, saves time and money
what is that word that mr. Jones said in 21:43? Detaunt? huh?
Détente(s). From French. Literally "de-tension". I presume they're called that because they are effectively gaps that allow the spring to decompress.
Does it matter what gear you are in when you change the shifter cable?
Yes it does. The cable should be in the most relaxed position, with as much cable extended from the lever as possible.
@@parktool ok thanks

i have a sram plasma and that little set screw caused me so much grief, i had no idea it was in there i thought my cable was just jammed in

In general I don't see a reason to change the cable unless it rusty, any comments?
They could have a kink or a fray that cause as much or more resistance than a corroded cable.
@@parktoolcan confirm, got this issue on a bike for my son.
microshift know whats up
Normal mtb shifters are good. Friction shifters are kinda cool too. But grip shifters? Meh, never liked them. Feels so clumsy for me.
No one asked you.
They are the worst from so many stand points
never buying a cover plate sram, noted, thats almost as bad a design as the revoshift
Sram is better couldn't afford tho got microshif
THE BEST THING TO DO TO FIX THESE KINDS OF SHIFTERS IS TO SMASH THEM WITH A HAMMER AND USE CLICK BUTTON GEAR SHIFTERS..
Are you kidding when you use the silly torque to 2 newton meters.
Mostly...this doesnt work!
