Clear , concise. No padding - "here's what I'm gonna do". Excellent. Thank you.
dont he broke mine with this method
Solved the gear mystery of my son's bike! I was so inspired I also fixed his front brakes, kick stand and lock. Installed new lights and a new bell! Happy little boy, Happy mom. Thanks so much!
You're welcome. Way to go! All that work you did reminds me I have to put together a new bike we just bought for my grandson's birthday.
Thanks! my 11yo has lost another excuse to stay inside.
Great, lol
Fantastic walkthrough. I’ve never worked on a bike before and this make it simple, outside of my human errors. So clear, the different section were fantastic, and it blew other how-tos out of the water. Thanks so much for your hard work on this. I was able to save my kid’s bike!
Respect
Exceptional video. Don't change a thing. Thank you.
thanks for this video, i just bought a used bike for my son, and couldn't afford local bike shop prices! your a good man!
Had some problems with mine being really tight hard to twist. Soon the outer plastic split. Upon inspection the cable had some gritty rust spots. Being close to water it tells me we should also be lubing the cable that rides in the plastic outer also. Thanks for your helpful video! I got some answer to sticky shifter out of this. Always finding nuggets of knowledge and wisdom, tricks and great help.
Straight to the point. Great video. Not a bunch of worthless tips that don't matter, & waste everyone's time. I love it. Nice job.
Great video. You know how to demo. Thank you. Also, your voice is sharp and clear, not to mention that the cardinals and others added melody to the proceedings.
perfect. You get right to the nitty gritty without all the blah blah blah at the beginning. Grip shifter will be worked on tomorrow thanks to you... Great video
Thank YOU much! My Trek RST's Rt. Side shifter has gone down and I'll now have the courage to get it back up and running without me fighting it everyday for five miles! I noticed the Cardinals before you mentioned it. It's an elite bird that's rare to have giving you live music.
You're welcome. Here in WI cardinals are very common and noisy and appear on many of my soundtracks and I'm not complaining.
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing that essential knowledge to keep cheap walmart bike running for many years!
FINALLY A VIDEO TO FIX THE GEARS THAT HAVE THE SAME AS ME!
Love that this was straight and to the point. Very useful and informative!
Thnx, this is very helpful. My brother's mountain bike has trouble shifting; thought derailleur was too tight, but makes sense. He cracked his shifter, dirt likely got in there. I'll probably wind up replacing it thou. Thnx again 👍
Thank you so much for helping me fix my gear shifter. Best video on how it's done.
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback.
Great tutorial, thanks! Going to give this a try and see if I can get mine running.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I now need to try it. Just bought a used bike at a garage sale, 7 gears, but will not shift at all, and can only turn 1 click on the twist shifter. I know nothing about repairing bikes, so this hopefully will be the fix. If not, I hate to think what else it needs. I realize now, that I paid far too much too! It is always something...ugh! I am beginning to believe that "Murphy" must be my Siamese twin!
Stumbled upon this to figure this out on my son's bicycle. Looking forward to trying this, what seems to be, straight-forward process.
i wouldnt your son will be mad when you end up with a shifter in a ton of pieces
@@tiktoktube120 I guess it's a good thing I'm not you?
@@tiktoktube120 - Sounds like you don't have a clue what you're doing.
Great detail. I have the same problem on my son’s bike, feels like I can do it now. Thanks ❤
Excellent and detailed breakdown, this is exactly what I needed to see to understand the mechanics of how these work to fix mine. Thank you!
You're welcome! I hope the repair goes well.
@@TheOriginalMechanic Thanks and it did! Turns out I had snapped a small plastic piece inside so I had to replace the grip shift anyway, but now all fixed it runs as smooth and quiet as the day I bought it :D (Tern Link D8 gen1)
Finally, no beating around the bush! My local bike shop wanted $140 to do an annual tune up on my kids bikes to fix this issue. I could get them new bikes for that price. So thank you for helping me save a few (a LOT) of money on repairs. Best video on this topic!!
Thanks. I just had to do this to my grandsons bike. Much appreciated!
Thnx, repair complete. Simple fix. Few tools, best part - video clip explanation
Good and clear instructions, thanks!!!
Same shifter, same problem. Thank you so much
This was just what i needed.
Thanks. 🙏🏻
Thank you. Excellent video.
Great video! I have a mountain bike that was left on the curb for free. I put new tubes on it and adjusted the brakes. Come to find out the same shifter was stuck as the one you just fixed. I figured I would watch a video first before I just started taking stuff apart that didn’t need to be taken apart. This was exactly the same issue I was having. Thank you for the video!
Smh same with mine, dudes wife said “ he only rode it once or twice” okay lady why is everything rusty and broken? It was 10 dollars, which honestly I should’ve just gotten a Walmart bike or something
superb video...just to repeat another commenter 'Clear , concise. No padding'
Thanks DAD! (For the dad that never taught me shit, my actual dad lol)
That washer with the lip between the cable and the nut should have the lip over the cable so pointing down.
Also correct assembly and adjustment of cable/shifter is always done in highest gear, not lowest.
Always shift to highest before beginning to work on a bicycle.
My lil spring was broke 😢I looked on Amazon for a replacement. To my surprise I could get the entire gearshifter for $10. I replaced mine and it’s working great. I usually buy top rated and whatever else everyone is buying on Amazon. I picked up some new brakes and intertubes too. After 1500 miles finally doing some deferred maintenance 🤣🤣
Excellent video. Clear. Articulate. No incessant repetition of "I'll go ahead and..." Thanks.
Thank you!!! I needed that screw size! 2.5mm 👍🏾
That was great! Learn something new every day I say. My suspicions are confirmed. I have the same type of thing. Mine is stuck in high though.
same and it wont work for us he broke my shifter with this method i highly suggest going to a bike shop at least they know what they talking about
This video was very helpful
Hey thanks for such an informative video and you explained everything quite well I am now subscribed
Thanks for the feedback and for subscribing.
You saved my butt- thanks for this
Tks...comes in handy working on my grandkids bikes...
Wow..! That was informative..! Thanks.

Great video buddy, thank you!
Thank you and also, Cardinals love to discuss bike mechanicing in my neck of the woods as well.
😄Love the cardinal comment.🐦
Thank you. Your vid is about the only one that explains how fix stuck gripshifter.

Good luck with the fix and thanks for subscribing!
Amazing tutorial I only had to do the first step and my bike started working
I have broken a dozen of these completely unable to wind the cable back on the track and fit together. Maybe some day I will get it.
& I also subscribed!!!
Excellent
Very happy with item.
Thanks 😊
This guys a ledgend
New idea for channel title: The Legendary Mechanic lol
@@TheOriginalMechanic 😂😂😂
Thanks bro
Mines the opposite any tips or is it the same
Amazing
Came across in my recommended... Not sure how you put the cable back on, but it's way easier to be in the highest gear (7 in this case), pull any slack out of the cable, and tighten the bolt... No force or several pairs of pliers needed, you are not pulling. a lot of tension, just removing slack, plus, yeah, I would have change the cable at that point. Nice video though, I repair all sorts of these grips often, these particular once are one of the easier ones to take apart.... Ride on.
Thank you
What about the durelier one I want to see u fix that one
Iam the first one that got you from 2999 to 3000 likes!!!!
Thanks for that lol!
Excellent video; love the way you added the clear audio after. Two questions: was it necessary to loosen the cable? and where’d you get the bracelet?
The cable has to be loosened up some to get the grip shifter apart. I've seen a few videos where they actually cut a perfectly good cable to get the shifter apart. As for the bracelet...lol.
@@TheOriginalMechanic thanks. Cool bracelet.
We can loosen a cable a little as follows. Move the derailleur to the largest gear ring or cog. Stop rotating wheels and move the shifter to the smallest gear ring or cog position. Once a cable is loosened, it can be loosened a lot if the following conditions are satisfied:
1. The cable housing is not a one piece from the sifter to the derailleur.
2. Cable housings can be pulled out from the cable housing stoppers.
3. The cable housing stoppers have slots to take out the cable.
Once the cable is taken out from the cable housing stoppers, we have enough loose cable.
Tak fra malling i DK
Good video but if my cable end looked like that I would be replacing the cable as you’re probably going to have to anyway sooner than later unless you can wind that up tightly and put it in a cable end. I would change it as I’ve got it off anyway saves doing it again later.
hi!! Im having this exact same problem with my boyfriends bike... I wanna fix it for him!!! I dont know much about all these lubricants though and i know some can be harmful for certain material if the correct one isnt used. Is there a specific lubricant you would recommend? When i looked up yours on Amazon, a whole bunch of options showed up 😵💫
Experts don't recommend petroleum based lubricants such as white lithium on plastic. I have personally used them without issues but apparently it depends on the plastic. Instead they recommend silicone based lubricants for plastic. Searching under that will result in many products.
Hey what should I do if mine doesn’t have a clicker spring do bike shops sell them? Or what should I do thank you
I suspect this spring is sold as part of an entire assembly. Your best bet might be to take one off another bike or maybe see if a bike repair shop has one lying around.
great video.. my bike is brand new and does it.. any ideas as to why?
Must be a manufacturing defect. I would discuss this issue with the seller if possible.
I too just inherited a rescue bike and have shifters on both sides that stick. I am hoping I can use your advise and get them to work. Most concerned about getting the spring put back in the correct place and position. Never worked on bikes before so - ?
The spring will only go back in one way. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Dunno if you have already worked on the bike, but more often than not, so-called stuck shifters are actually corroded cables.
please dont he want you to break them
@@trekkeruss i tried what he said and my shifter broke into pieces im broke and cant replace it
if you use a hair drier you can dry everything inside nicely
For me my front gears have issues, no clicking sound, and the shifter doesnt stay in place
I'll try cleaning it
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
For the lube part, am I able to use wd40 instead of lubricant?? Basically just use oil instead
I know the pros recommend a non petroleum based lubricant. These can damage plastic parts.
what type of grease is that? can i dunk everything in WD-40 or do I need the grease?
A non-petroleum based grease is suggested for this job. WD-40 would be a no. A bike shop may have the ideal grease. I used what I had on hand. It's called Lubriplate.
Could you show me again how to clean it with a nylon brush I didn’t catch all of that
So my left gear shift has been bent around a complete 180°, am I able to fix it myself or do I need to take it to a shop,
I have not fixed such a problem but I would probably give it a shot before taking it in.
@@TheOriginalMechanic I tried it and I managed to fix it without any tools, took like 30 seconds
It is always good to tighten shifter cable from the highest gear then tension it to the lowest gear. You have done it reversed
Use the wife's toothbrush to clean out the old grease and muck.
Nice!
Hey my shift gear refuses to go into gear 1 the other 5 work perfectly any ideas?
There may be a stop or limit screw that needs to be adjusted slightly. This is there to prevent the chain from coming off.
Just picked up a free, almost new bike, and the shifter won't move at all. I'm glad I ran into this video because now I can see if this is the problem.
i would not try it
HA! You work on bikes just like me..... in tall grass where tiny parts instantly dissappear, using cresent wrench instead if proper tool
Exactly what I needed and super easy to do. Very good tutorial, clear and concise, thank you. 😊
You're very welcome
Does me, so the clicking sound is normal on these twist grips, thought something was wrong, thought 💭 it be less noise, smooth and a little noise, not click, click while twisting, so does me.... 👍
Does this work for the front derailer
Sure it will.
I can't get the shifting dial off..stuck, fetched up or something
Maybe we should do a another 15 minute video about how to get the little bit of grease out with a of Qtip
Mad?
My shifted works but my low and high left handle dsnt go to high it’s stuck in low how do I fix that the same way ?
I would think that the same method would work on the left gear shifter.
My grip shifters are literally stuck. I've taken out the screws holding the shifter grips and they won't slide out. I've tried hammering them just to loosen them , still won't budge.
Any ideas?
Two things: The cable has to be loose by cutting it or disconnecting it from the derailleur and the handle bar grip must be off. Then it should pull apart.
@@TheOriginalMechanic if you dont stop breaking ppls bikes imma sue you
do not listen to this pea brain he broke my shifter take yo bike to a repair shop dont listen to this fool
@@tiktoktube120 - I'm really curious how you managed to break something by trying this? It's a no-brainer.
My shifter is in two parts, but it’s a rubber outer part used to grip, and the mechanism is one part…
I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
I've got a
new bike not even a month old it was working fine then I realized that it only started to shift from 6-5
