As pointed out by Mike Walton, if you've ever built the MPC model, the whole disk is supposed to rotate. It's been a long time, but if memory serves, both dorsal and ventral were able to rotate independently. They probably didn't in the original movie due to budgetary and model constraints, but with the advent of higher budgets, better models, and CGI, it was possible to finally make the turrets do what they were supposed to from the start.
Additional articulation of the turret mounts allows a secondary method of slewing the guns to the target if the turret disk is damaged or inoperable. The disk and mounts would likely have different power sources as well, for additional redundancy.
Weapon systems on naval vessels in real life are upgraded or modified at times during their lifespan to add or change capabilities. It just makes good sense that it would be the same here.

Only because it's an early idea, it doesn't need to be a good idea.

The problem with rotating the whole disk is that the ladder behind the actor would change position as it rotates which we never see. That is unless the rotation of the disk moves the ladder and turret access tube along with it, but that would misalign the ladder and tube from the opposite disk.

  • @memphus
    @memphus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The turrets are easily explained by the fact that the whole disc can rotate, as other comments have mentioned.
The real issue here has to do with scale - given the thickness (top to bottom) of the ship, there is absolutely no way to fit two of these turret cockpits, AND a ladder between them. The ship would have to be twice as thick to scale in that much interior as seen in the films.

👍🏻 I noticed that when building the model. The only room for the gunners seat was suspended right in the middle of the ship. Definitely no room for another one let alone an access tunnel.

What are you talking about? The Falcon literally can turn that circular section so the turret can turn. It’s not “dA nEw mOvIEz tHrowiNg lOgiC aWay”. It’s literally using logic to fix something that was illogical in the original films.
Also, “bad writing” is incorrect, no matter how you spin it.

the entire laser creation system inside

Fine Molds was a scale model manufacturer that made the best star wars models in the late 90s and early 2000s. They had access to the Lucasfilm archive. They made a 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon with a spinning turret mechanism as shown in the sequels, literally a decade or more before the sequels. The instructions told you to not glue the pieces together so that you could spin that section, and also the pictures showed the whole platform in different orientations to let you know about that feature. And that model was an expensive replica. The best you could buy at the time. Not a toy by any means. An almost one thousand pieces scale model for expert modelers. So I don't think ILM would've allowed that bold feature if it wasn't canon, and I don't think Fine Molds would've come up with it considering that scale models are all about accuracy to the point that we modelers actually call ourselves "rivet counters" sometimes, cause we tend to obsess over the little details and we do not want anything that wasn't supposed to be there. The spinning turret also appeard in videogames and toys but to me, the fact that a licensed and pretty expensive replica, and a scale model no less (it's all about details' accuracy) had such a daring feature makes it 100% canon even before the sequels. Plus, these things have to go through the approval of the license owner, Lucasfilm, to see if there's something that needs to be changed before release, so Lucasfilm must have approved it at some point. Now I'm not saying the original studio models had this feature, cause I don't think they did, and that's why other replicas don't have it, like the Master Replicas falcon or the Bandai Perfect Grade. But it's a no brainer for me that within the sw canon this very much existed before the sequels.

    Great video.
I have been fascinated with the Gun turrets since 1977.
I do not like how they have messed them around in the new films.
They were such a great design used sparingly in the original trilogy.
The turrets are not central on the ship as indicated by the windows.
A rotating turret means that the occupant would also be rotating on his seat.
The ladder is fixed inside the turret, hence there is no way either would spin.
The ladder on the set is incorrectly positioned, appearing behind each gunner seat.
The turret is approached from the angle of the cockpit corridor.
The ladder should appear to the left shoulder of the top and bottom turret gunner.
Viewing the exterior set of the Falcon, there is no way that the turrets can fit in there. Not enough room.

I am more troubled by the fact that the guns need gunners. I would think that having computers control the guns would make more sense. But I can also see that making the MF similar to a WWII bomber where gunners had to man the guns is more rich visually and makes for a more exciting scene.
Also that it shows that whoever is manning the guns (Luke, Han, Finn, Rey, etc) would have exceptional eye-hand coordination and there would be more merit with each kill for the gunner rather than for the computer.
