She once told a reporter that when she retires she wants to live in Brooklyn. For me, that said a lot about who she was. Brooklyn is not Manhattan, Miami Beach or Malibu, it's where real people live, decent hard-working folks, neighbourhoods full of families and children playing on the street - the thing missing from her own life.

Marilyn really was everyday people. I think all she really wanted was to be a wife, and mother, to have a family. And I think that's when her real happiness would have shined through. She sure worked hard at keeping joy inside her, despite the orphaned life she had as a child. She had that spark in her. And I'm thankful we got to see Marilyn Monroe, on screen. She sure was a blueprint for many young girls. RIP

I love Marilyn. She was a deeply complex, brilliant and very troubled woman. She was so ahead of her time and wanted so deeply to be loved and understood in a business that saw her as an object. I’m excited for this documentary but I do hope they handled her and her legacy with love and care. She deserves nothing less after a lifetime of being exploited and profited off of. She just wanted to be adored, and hopefully Netflix respected her wishes while telling their story.

She was a very intelligent and aware woman. I recently learn about how She would always, discretely support, Indigenous and Black Americans with money or her clout to push their struggle for equality.
A shame that a bloke like Arthur Miller never owned the fact that She was his peer, but came from a different upbringing.
I'm still convinced that like Billie Holiday, Ms. Monroe was killed, by proxy, by the powers that be in that era.

The culture in her time was not equipped to understand her or accurately frame the issues surrounding her. The culture in our time is also not equipped to do this. As an avid Marilyn fan, she is an incredibly fascinating woman. She was so smart and very beyond her years. I could go on for hours about how much I adore her, but I would recommend Fragments. It’s a book of her writing found after her passing. Gives you better insight into the amazing mind she had in a time that women were expected to be pretty or smart, not both. She was a trailblazer, becoming one of the first celebrities to start their own production companies and was one of the first celebrities to advocate for awareness about CSA. She truly was amazingly complex.

100%. What brought her down ultimately was the crushing realization she had excelled in her profession beyond her skill set. Starting around 1955, she couldn't concentrate on her lines, which I blame on that horrible Method acting guru who glommed onto her. You can read some of the ridiculous notes he gave her. These are annotations in her own writing all over her personally used movie scripts. She became dependent and frustrated with herself to the point of needing pills to sleep and to wake up. I think she would have lived many years longer had she quit being Marilyn Monroe and tried being a regular person like Garbo chose to do.

I think most women alter their voice to some extent. We do it subconsciously either to conform to social norms, to attain a goal, etc. Higher OR lower, whichever benefits the situation. But I think the main reason why we raise the pitch of our voices is simply because it feels like a comfortable mask. Keep in mind that we've been taught that our voices should be feminine, cheery, and sweet since we were literally toddlers.
Interestingly, both men & women tend to get more opportunities & are given more respect when they speak with a deeper voice in a natural part of their register. (I wouldn't recommend replicating Elizabeth Holmes' tone. Her voice sounds odd because it's not her natural range.) So if you have a naturally low voice, embrace it!

I find it both sad and fascinating that for a woman so many see as the ultimate sex symbol, Marilyn was a deeply complicated woman who said ‘sex seems to me to be the opposite of love’, which is such a tragic way to feel.
An intelligent, empathetic, gifted person who does not fit into the boxes people (mostly men) put her into at her time and our culture has tried to fit her into posthumously.

Saskia - there's two sides to that coin. How would you feel about an actress who kept everyone waiting on the set for hours? That would have been very frustrating. Norma Jean created the Marilyn Monroe persona and personally I feel it was she who couldn't get past what she created. It became a double-edged sword.

Fun fact: Britney Spears and Marilyn Monroe are related. And to think both lived famous lives to the extreme point of losing themselves. Both were sexualized at a young age, scrutinized by the public and media. And were blonde bombshells of their eras. I am just grateful Britney made it out alive. Marilyn Monroe also somehow reminds me of the Princess Diana. They were both considered a threat by their respective government.

Marilyn Monroe is a pioneer woman ahead of her times. She is the first Hollywood superstar to speak out for black female singer Ella Fitzgerald in the era of racial discriminationrife rife. When Ella was told that she can't play at Mocambo because of her race, then one of Ella’s biggest fans - Marilyn personally called the owner of the Mocambo telling him she wanted Miss Ella booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. Besides, she sympathized and supported the politically persecuted. She is very cordial and kind to people around her, even strangers on the street. She would offer her friends money so that their children can go to school. She wasn't interested in jewelry so was money. She just demand for fair like pay equality compared to Elizabeth Taylor. She spent her whole life trying to be appreciated, and she almost succeeded. Unfortunately, she died at last covered with the mist of mystery.

And maybe they are these paradoxes of her they made her a myth that overlooks the boundaries of the world of cinema, a true icon of popular culture.R.I.P. magical Marilyn Monroe... Timeless queen of icons

You're absolutely right! I've been a Marilyn fan for years, and I've never felt this close to anybody in my whole life. She was something different, my heart breaks for her every time. She deserved much more than this. The documentary is great, but my heart broke watching it... Again. My biggest life goal is to visit her grave, I would cry from happiness. I've actually spent months with searching for people who like Marilyn as much as I do, but I just never found anyone who is obsessed with her the way I am. It would be great to speak to someone who can understand my passion towards Marilyn. People around me just don't understand why I love her so much. Anyway... I agree with your comment very much. ❤️

I am a HUGE Marilyn Monroe fan and love who she was as Norma Jean. I wish I could go back in time and just be her best friend, someone who was close to her. Have her come over for Christmas and thanksgiving, and be part of a family. A family she never had but wanted and longed for. Her story is so heartbreaking and rips me to pieces. I’ve watched every documentary and video of Marilyn that exists. I own a piece of jewelry that was really worn by her in one of her movies, Niagara.
She is such a hero to me and I wish nothing but the best for her, yet know that she was murdered. Murdered to be kept quiet for a personal agenda from the Kennedys.
She was going to blow the roof off those two and speak to the press.
“I’m Marilyn Monroe and you don’t know who you’re dealing with.” As Bobby Kennedy came over the night before her death to find the red diary. The diary that held all the secrets but he never found it. Or so it is said. The Otash tapes say a lot! Hearing her be smothered with a pillow is disgusting! And hearing dr greenson in on it as he broke the syringe in her chest! I believe that he was paid off from the Kennedys to keep her quiet! He did t Eve call the cops for four hours AFTER she was found! Four hours!!! Why?
No water found by the bed and a purple colon where it was said the enema was given of barbiturates. She was murdered! Pure as hell!
She was Marilyn Monroe on the outside and PLAYED the part but in reality she was Norma Jean Baker. The lonely girl who was orphaned and just wanted a family of her own. She would get married and her “husband” would see the Marilyn who was Norma Jean, but they wanted A Sex goddess Marilyn so they left and divorced her. She was heartbroken just wanting love. Just wanting to be loved. She wanted a child thinking she could love that baby and receive love in return only to have a miscarriage from the pill abuse.

The holy trinity of women who are still talked about and relevant even after their deaths.
    1. Anne Boleyn
    2. Marilyn Monroe
    3. Princess Diana
Edit: FFS you lot!!! Why does everyone have to be so argumentative, no one can leave a simple comment without y’all bugging everyone. This isn’t an opinion it’s a fact these three still constantly get talked about to this day whether YOU know them or not. Anne is the most written about Queen in history that’s a fact, so you saying “well I don’t know her” still doesn’t change that fact, don’t be ignorant. Y’all don’t have to answer back to everything. You’re legit those people in life that constantly say “yeah but” must be tiring to know you in person.

The saddest part of her life is that people idolize her and glorify her cause she had a sad life, if she had a normal life people would've crucified her. Imagine her getting older and being 60 or idk. People back then would've shame her a lot, like they did with people like Madonna. Marilyn's death is literally glamourized, sick.
