The original idea was for a partially see-through little number, but since Marilyn's nude pics had just hit the news, the studio decided to tone it down. It's no surprise that this dress became iconic though, given that it was designed by the legendary William Travilla. Travilla designed many notable film dresses of the era (including Marilyn's iconic white dress, the one in which she stood over the subway grate).

    *[LYRICS]*
The French are glad to die for love
    They delight in fighting duels
But I prefer a man who lives
    And gives expensive jewels
    A kiss on the hand
    May be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
    On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat
    Men grow cold
    As girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
    But square-cut or pear-shaped
These rocks don't loose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
    Tiffany's!
    Cartier!
    Black, Starr, Frost Gorham!
    Talk to me Harry Winston
    Tell me all about it!
    There may come a time
When a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    There may come a time
    When a hard-boiled employer
    Thinks you're awful nice
But get that ice or else no dice
    He's your guy
    When stocks are high
But beware when they start to descend
    It's then that those louses
    Go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
    I've heard of affairs
    That are strictly platonic
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    And I think affairs
    That you must keep liaisonic
    Are better bets
If little pets get big baguettes
    Time rolls on
    And youth is gone
And you can't straighten up when you bend
    But stiff back
    Or stiff knees
    You stand straight at Tiffany's
    Diamonds! Diamonds!
    I don't mean rhinestones!
But diamonds are a girl's best friend

I feel like Miss Marilyn Monroe would’ve loved the 21st century, she was way ahead of her time.
Edit: I didn’t want to be the bitch that edits her comment, but let me clarify one thing: I never said anything about her switching times. This comment didn’t even imply that. I was just saying that she would have loved to see how far we’ve come socially and technologically. She was perfect where she was, but unfortunately, didn’t love long enough to see the 21st century.

This song isn't about liking material things, she never talked about having a loving relationship with a guy and dumping him when he couldn't give her stuff. all the examples she gave were affairs and sugar daddies. she's talking about not getting taken advantage of because diamonds are the only solid *security* a man could give. and employer hits on you, well screw your advancements unless i'm getting something out of it. "it's then that those louses go back to their spouses." It's not being taken advantage of in an already imbalanced power dynamic. She's talking about paying gas and rent with that money/gifts/diamonds. It's a really interesting feminist mindset for the 50s and throws the whole golddigger thing into wack because in all these stories, the GUY goes after her FIRST.
But idk. I might just be talking out of my ass here. I just really like this movie.

The really extreme saturation of the color in this scene is partly why it's so iconic. Marilyn stands out so much in her pink dress against the vibrant red background and black suits of the men. The female dancers' costumes are intentionally not as bright as her gown, so when she's surrounded by them, she still is the center of attention.

    • @Lu-li1ei
      @Lu-li1ei 3 ปีที่แล้ว +485

And how the dancer's costumes have little elements of hers, like the bow in the back and the lighter pink, complemented with those big and romantic skirts, like they were a younger version or Marilyn who she teachs to don't trust in men's love, is such a detail. In comparison her gown looks a lot more mature and sexier, by color and shilouethe, giving the idea she's over all this romantic manipulative shit already. I don't think this was that planned but it's an amazing conceptual work, express perfectly what the song means.

    • @rachelclark2164
      @rachelclark2164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +263

Also thought it was interesting that the other female dancers had the black stockings over their heads. It kind of removes the contrast and vibrancy from their features/hair. It really insures Marilyn stands out as the focal point. Everything about this number is genius!

I never really analyzed Marilyn's singing and dancing routines before. But I did this time. First of all, it was quite complicated to have so many men involved with carrying Marilyn around. Then she had to do a lot of fast and complicated movements in a way that was sexy and matched the melody. She had an unbelievable knack for making perfect sexy dance moves. Plus, her voice was not bad, and she was able to intonate the words in just the right provocative way. And let's not ignore the fact that this song "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" had a wonderful catchy tune combined with brilliant lyrics. I also found that her dress, makeup and hair were perfect. I dare say that Marilyn was never more beautiful. In my opinion, this had to be one of the all-time greatest numbers in any Hollywood movie musical.

If you want to sing along
The French are glad to die for love

    A kiss on the hand
    May be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
    On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat
    Men grow cold
    As girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end

Diamonds are a girl's best friend
    Tiffany's
    Cartier

When a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    There may come a time
    When a hard-boiled employer
    Thinks you're awful nice
But get that ice or else no dice
    He's your guy
    When stocks are high
But beware when they start to descend
    It's then that those louses
    Go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
    I've heard of affairs
    That are strictly platonic
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
    And I think affairs
    That you must keep liaisonic
    Are better bets
If little pets get big baguettes
    Time rolls on
    And youth is gone
And you can't straighten up when you bend
    But stiff back
    Or stiff knees
    You stand straight at Tiffany's

    Diamonds

According to bank records, there were women who had bank accounts.
Maybe you're confusing things. If you want to apply for a loan, but don't have any collateral, proof of income, etc., you may not be able to get the loan.
You would need to look at specific, individual case, where women were *denied* getting an account at a bank, to decide exactly what happened, and why.
If ONE woman got a bank account, that ruins the narrative "women weren't allowed to..."
