I thought that the manual said you can't do this, but the lockout must only protect you from bouncing off the tripwire into the bumper back into the wire.
the manual implies that it locks you out after touching the tripwire already, probably to stop first place from running into the tripwire into the bumber wihout losing too much time like the setup in the video does
I'm not so sure. The question is whether the time saved minus the setup time is too significant, overall across all use cases. The fact that you only get the bumper towards the front (if not exclusively first place, I'm not sure) could be a point towards them deciding to nerf since it, but you have to slow down and you're not guaranteed to get your place back if you lose it. Also it's hard to believe that this never came up as a possibility when they made the bumper give you a speed multiplier so I'm sure they're aware.

High Speed+Weight characters are probably better off driving & if you're hoping to take this online, even at Gear 2 the overall high speeds & good item selection makes it almost irrelevant. I personally find it has a niche use for lightweights where you zoom past the competition with a couple of jackpots, but now you're in 1st place, driving at a snails pace, & need a timesave. Some shortcuts have ringboxes & sliptide opportunities, so there's that too.

Every so often a bumper will slam into me and force me through a tripwire on accident. Never thought to purposely set one up before…
...you know this feels like it should be such an obvious trick and yet I've never thought of it before
I can see this for Gear 2 level tech, at Gear 3 people move so fast a cut trick of this consumption of time goes to irrelevancy
