Gamers Rise Up, or /r/GamersRiseUp, is a banned subreddit with an exceptional backstory. While many banned subreddits start out with a dicey premise that only got worse as time went on, Gamers Rise Up was a curious case of a subreddit that was created to mock people with detestable views, only for it to be taken over by the very people they sought to make fun of. While Reddit's intense over-censorship is undoubtably a bad thing, the sheer vileness of the community by the end of its lifespan meant its banning didn't come as a surprise. So how did the unholy trinity of incels, gamers, and the Joker create a community full of such hate? - ตลก

Gamers rise up was a good example of Poe's law. It was all glorious ironic shitposting.... until it wasnt anymore. Suddenly every post was a 52/13 "joke" and people were cheering in the comments. Mods did fuckall, and if you called out the lack of "a joke" "a point" or their blatant racism, you got downvoted and spammed with bs.

Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights?
These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who _enjoy_ the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a _challange_ when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.
Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

Joker being associated with incels was mostly ironic shitposting. Edgy kids on meme websites would use the Joker to show how cool and "twisted" they are. Jared Leto's infamous Joker portrayal prompted a lot of people to shitpost on purpose to satirize them, while also ramping up the cringe. Then by the time the Joaquin Phoenix movie was coming out, internet bloggers and gullible media outlets started reporting on Joker incels while completely missing the irony.
Jackasses who worship phoenix’s joker completely miss the point of that character of how much of a broken loser he is. The movie is cautionary tale for the rest of society of ignoring the down trodden.

God I remember being around on Reddit when gamersriseup started. Had some good laughs, but I figured to go the same route all subreddits of its kind go. Actually one of the reasons I pretty much quit Reddit except for specific positive community subreddits. You see the issue with these subreddits dedicated to satire or just generally making fun of a group inevitably become the thing that they are mocking. R/cringeanarchy was a subredded form due to r/cringe having ironically cringey rules that made it almost impossible to post anything besides a very specific type of video. It was pretty good at first and then eventually became just a far right subreddit to make fun of the libs. Comedycemetery was to make fun of cringe-worthy comics that had pretty much no actual humor, or some comics where they just kill the joke by explaining it. This subreddit eventually became its own unfunny joke with the same unfunny joke being repeated over and over and over again. So gamersriseup becoming this hell hole of incels just makes sense.
As someone who enjoys a quality cringe I also loved cringeanarchy at first too, it seemed like the only place you could get high quality Brony cringe videos. But yeah by the end it just became hyper-political which, ironically, is cringe

There's a reason I refused to see the Joker movie, and still refuse to ever see it.
@@troodon1096 In defence of the movie, the one scene that would be relevant to incel beliefs, where (spoiler) it's implied that the Joker kills a woman in his apartment building that he liked because he found out the relationship he thought they had together was all in his head, is basically the only point in the movie where the Joker is clearly depicted as being a dangerous psychopath, whereas in every other scene he comes across as at least somewhat sympathetic. She's also the only victim who is depicted as completely innocent, both in his life and in the context of the world the movie takes place in, while the other characters he kills are depicted as being complicit to at least some degree. The whole thing is framed as being about him realizing the depths of his own delusions and isolation which sends him over the edge, rather than him being angry that she wasn't really sleeping with him. It's also the only time in the movie where it's only implied that he killed someone, yet left ambiguous as to whether he actually did it or not. It's almost like a narrative discretion shot, as if her death is treated as going too far even for an R-rated movie about the Joker, or like the film itself wants to give her a theoretical chance to survive since we don't actually see her die.
That doesn't mean that the scene couldn't potentially have other unfortunate implications, and I can definitely see why some people may not like the movie for various reasons, but personally I never got the feeling that it supported anything incels believe about women. The only point where the film makes it explicitly clear that he is in the wrong (rather than leaving it up to the audience) is the scene where his victim is a woman that he was interested in.
Honestly I kinda wish the movie had engaged with that aspect a bit more, as in I wish the second half had delved more into explicitly depicting him as a villain who had passed his moral event horizon, even if he had been sympathetic at first.

A big issue with having anything like that sub is that it's easy for bad faith actors to take advantage of. I've personally had conversations with people where you think you both understand it's a joke, only for the other person to actually show they believe it. Over the internet, it's especially hard to judge what's sarcasm and what's real so i can imagine that over time, a sub like that can just snowball with genuine terrible people.
The issue is that if you enjoy that type of humour from time to time, then it's almost inevitable to go that direction, or go the other way and become too sterile and tame.

So he shoots Barbra; and abducts and tortures Gordon to prove to himself that all it takes is one bad day to drive the sanest man mad and best man bad… and he’s proven wrong. Gordon doesn’t break and the Batman brings the Joker in alive.

I remember i met someone who unironically called himself a gamer and always made the "women belong in the kitchen joke". He made it an ungodly amount of times whenever he even remotely saw a female to the point that even the guys hated him.
A specific moment i remember is when i was talking to my friend and he went up to us out of the blue, at the back of the classroom and said "you should be washing dishes by now" or somn. Friend got annoyed and told him he was unfunny and he burst. Called him every asian slur known to man it was almost impressive.
