    Jellyfish need the cylinder tanks, they can only swim one way and can’t stop or turn back, they also can’t see or feel their environment so if they get stuck on a corner they’re gonna just be there and it’s gonna damage their bell. It’s actually the perfect animal to abuse because it doesn’t have a central nervous system to even feel pain

    • @b1oh1
      @b1oh1 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I never knew they could only swim one way. Dumb question, how are only certain species located in specific areas? I know there are underwater currents, but they're not circular. It seems like there would be a traceable path of jellyfish migration. I need to find some books and documentaries on this. I'm thoroughly interested.

    • @microwavedcheetos
      @microwavedcheetos ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@b1oh1 they’re all dependent on the sea current, that’s why some beaches became infested with them during the monsoon season. There are also freshwater jellyfish that got trap in lakes when the sea level used to be higher

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it's more of that they shouldn't have corners. There's the vertical disc tanks that are being sold with jellies as kits and the cylinder tanks as well that normally have a very controlled flow.
      Of course, there are a few that don't require it, but those are tanks that probably need permits because something like irukandji or similar aren't ones you really should be having at home...

    • @jygergruz9562
      @jygergruz9562 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually that is sort of a myth. Jellyfish don’t need cylinder tanks, but an unexposed flow creator and certain direction of flow. Corners do not damage their bell.

  • @ritahueston9475

    I used to care for jellies when I worked as an aquarist and they definitely need a tank that doesn't have places where the current stagnates (i.e. corners). If jellies settle onto a surface it will actually start to rot their bells and they can get really bad infections. Upside-down jellies requirements are completely different from barrel jellies requirements for sure but they still all need ample space and a strong current!

      I'm not on that level of aquascaping. However, I'm pretty active on Reddit in the aquarium and aquascaping subreddits. There are way more people asking for thoughts and critiques there than you'd think. Many do it "correctly" as well, by creating a dry run, getting the positioning right before even selecting the plants. Then they're aided by CO2 and nutrients. They look amazing.

    I've always loved the tiny spring peepers in the West here in the US, think they're more a coastal species and have the ability to change color to match their environment. Super adorable little guys and I'd raise a group of them if I could, but I'm in the wrong area nowadays to build them an outdoor pond
    The jellyfish question about flow is yes and no at the same time, they are almost entirely made up of water so high flow or an air bubble under their skirt can easily kill them and corners are bad. Jellyfish can't exactly swim, or at least most species can't, and they practically have no senses or ability to course correct so corners are a serious risk of getting stuck for them. I've also heard feeding them is kinda hard due to them being passive feeders so that does rely on flow, but they're kinda like longfin bettas ngl, it has to be pretty specific to not batter them but can't be stagnate either. I've... Actually had a species of jellyfish that was unintentional and the majority of the reason that I tore down a 90gal reef attempt after a year ^^' they were snowflake hydroids and the mobile medusa form in their adult stage easily goes undetected since they're as big as micro bubbles and yeah... They were really destructive because they just ram into and sting everything they touch. Don't reccomend intentionally owning jellyfish, they look cool but most aren't even legal due to how venomous some species are and most need a specialized species tank to survive, which from what I've heard, is a gamble even for experienced people, I just had to have possibly the only exception to the rule and it was a disaster. Really wish I hadn't had that infestation, I miss my clownfish

    Not sure what is difficult about starting a siphon that way. It is how I drain my tanks and I do it that way because it is easy particularly if the tap is physically lower than the tank.

    6:55 this is why i bought a python. Water changes are a breeze. Keeping in mind i have 8 tanks one of which is 180 gal so the python just made sense. But back when i had ten gals i was inhaling that water all day haha

    So the place where I got my eyebrows waxed had a tank with two of those goldfish looking fish that have the big bump on their head. The tank had nothing in it but a hand mirror hanging in the center of it. I’m obviously not a fish keeper but that just seems wrong.

    I’m doing research on what tank to get before I get a betta. Is a 5 gallon vertical tank ok or should I get a horizontal tank?

    • @cursedaim8974
      @cursedaim8974 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      imo, 5 gallons isn't enough, you should get an horizontal as they need to breathe air and the water level shouldn't be high.
