hello father fish. I bought an aquarium with 11 discus fish in it. I'm going to pick it up soon, but I don't know how I can get the aquarium running now. Can I do discus fish in a small pool temporarily? or can I just put the bottom in and put the fish in right away? what do you recommend please help me with good advice to transfer these beautiful fish. What would father fish do ❤😂😂😂

I am a big fan of father fishes methods kinda annoying some of the fish I have destroy plants so I can't keep many but even having a deep substrate helps alot
I was a critic of father fish at one point until I tried one of his methods in my tank and it worked like a charm, now all of my tanks follow father fishes methods and they’re a lot less maintenance and the fish seem happier with my hands out of the tank.

FF, ever since I started watching your videos I had the plans to set up a 240 liter tank. I went and did it, and it's already a wonderful thing to see in my living room (close to 3 weeks now). Once I get the last fish in I might submit a video to the shoal! :D
A comment about ich - in my deep substrate FF aquarium, I had some ich sneak in on some new cherry barbs. I had about 30 small fish in the tank, with a food web. When I saw the second ich spot, I raised the temperature to about 88 degrees and just watched. The ich would move from fish to fish, lasting only a day or two, I usually had 3-4 fish out of the 30 infected at one time with only a couple of spots each. I had to keep temps up around 87-88 for a couple of weeks before it completely cleared up, probably because I had so many hosts in the tank, but I just stayed with it until several days after I saw the last ich spot and now it has completely cleared up. I did not lose a single fish, and I did not quarantine or medicate anything. I just raised the temperature until it ran it's course. Thanks Lou for sharing the knowledge!

Thanks for the video. It compiled many points I have heard from your other videos. I have set up my dirted, sand capped 20 gallon aquarium this last October with your supplement mixed in the potting soil/coconut coir/compost "dirt". As a person that transitioned from a gravel/plastic plants tank to a natural planted tank I wanted to empathize getting enough "submerged" plants in the beginning. Luckily I had well developed pothos plants growing out of the back of the old tank setup and "matured" sponge filters that help keep the balance as a few of my online purchased plants "melted" and had to develop submerged foliage. I also had to transfer my livestock back into the planted tank as soon as it settled as my temporary hold tank was only 5 gallons.
Thank you Father Fish. I set up my first aquarium tank with potting soil and sand from the beach. I am not a millionaire and I don't have time to do constant tank maintenance. My fish and snails have been happy and healthy for 2 months and I have only added water when it evaporated. My water nitrate/nitrite levels are ideal and it is a joy to watch my tank.
Something I like to do with a filter with too strong a flow is put it near one side of the tank and point it at the wall next to it, that makes lots of circulation in one corner and low flow in the rest of the tank. It also keeps that corner free of debris, blowing it toward the more organic majority of the tank

I currently have gravel substrate in my 10 gallon tank, but decided to purchase a 5 gallon tank, and recently bought substrate and plants from your website. I believe that this is one of your best videos. I enjoy seeing an awesome variety of people's aquariums from all over the world. I cleaned and rinsed my sand because if I did not the water would be cloudy. I love the dried leaves in my tank as it breaks down and feeds my snails and shrimp. Thank you for the best informational video ever. My daughter has had ICK and it took out all the fish except the Bettas...., she needs to watch this and learn more about fish-keeping naturally. We need a video for people who started the wrong way like just gravel at the bottom I just covered that with aquasoil in one tank and sand capped that and in the other just put a bunch of sand on top of the gravel I let get mulmy for a bit. Instead of restarting the whole cycle of the tank so far have had no issues but was trying to avoid completely redoing the tanks and risking a startover 😅
The resurection jar can be a extreamly useful tool for starting new tanks. The 55 gallon i started i used a deep substrate system that he describes planted the tank then i put the whole jar wile full into the tank. this will allow the fauna to come out of the jar and colonize the tank... leave the jar in there for a good period of time maybe a week or 2 then take it out and set it back up again to replenish it self ect. thats what i did and it was alot of fun to watch. be sure to have leaves in the tank for the microfauna to feed on.

If so, would 3 inches of sand be enough? And could I use river sand? (The one used for contrsuction). Thank you
Started my first Father Fish 55 gallon tank this week. It’s a unique one already. I’m creating a marshy swamp waterway. The tank is about 60% filled. Floating plants all over. Natural wood and leaves and dirt and sand. A simple sponge filter. I just added 2 small bristlenose plecos and snails already have an established population! I’m letting the tank tell me what she needs instead of forcing my will on the tank. Slowly I’ll add more plants, more fish and let this thing become the marsh I hope she becomes. In even more time I hope she becomes a mother tank for planting my other tanks.
Here in the netherlands its easy to set up these type of tanks. We have an abundance of creeks and ponds, our outside water quality is good and our tapwater is good so it's hard to screw it up tbh
About cloud water that the particles do no precipitate a good tip to void it is to wash the sand multiple times before put it in the aquarium. I use construction sand washed it many times and could not believe that first planted aquarium simple worked fowling FF instructions even after I commiting many mistakes in the process. My next tank will be a 120cm x 50cm x 50cm that I will do my best in following the step by step process
Now exactly that issue I have water so cloudy, and even I do water changes, when I plant something, sand makes clouds in the water again....so frustrating, it's like a desert storm instead of fishes, and the plants get covered by fine sand particles...

My substrate will be 3" deep and the sand cap will be another 3" deep=6". This is a 30 gallon breeder tank I'm talking about. There will be 40-50 total small plants. They will grow and grow in size. After I plant, there will be 20 green neons added. Once this new tank is established, then my betta and 15 green neons will be moved from their 12" cube into the 30 gallon breeder. So the 30 gal. must reach a comparable state w the 12" cube before it is safe to add them over. Then the 12" will remain intact as a web of life/resurrection tank. I can take resources from the 12" as needed into the 30 gal.😊

Hi Father Fish. I set up a 200 liter aquarium using the Father Fish method and I am simply fascinated, thank you. Now I'm setting up a 35 cm cube aquarium, how much dirty substrate and how much sand on top do I need? Thanks for all the help.
I attempted this natural approach with two goldfish I had saved from a pond, and I found some river snails while fishing and added plants and sand from the same site I found the snails. I knew what I was going for but think I missed some necessary steps or additions because the water was cloudy and the plants would t stay down in the sand even when weighing them down with rocks. The goldfish are just too curious 😆 I am going to give it a go again now that I have them in a temporary tank while I clean and set up their 75 gallon tank. But I'm wondering if I need to purchase sand or specific soil substrate with the sand from a pet store, or if river sand would be fine too?
I absolutely love your approach to fish keeping, and honestly trust your advice above anyone else's. My question is simple though. I've heard that you can't have a sustained ecosystem with any less than a 10 gallon tank. I only have one betta, which has been very happy in his 1.3 gallon, which I want to upgrade to a 5 gallon planted tank following your guidelines. The main question is... is it possible to have a sustainable ecosystem following your "formula" in a 5 gallon betta tank? Is it possible in the current 1.3 gallon I currently have? Very much appreciate any response in advance!
2 months ago, and I didn't ever see the notification 🙄 I ended up getting a 9 gallon, and now have a community tank with my betta, 3 ember, and 3 black emperor tetras living very happily together. The tank was planted with 2 anubias attached to a piece of driftwood, and several octopus plants in the back, along with duckweed. The plants have been growing so much now that I need to do some maintenance and trim a bunch out. I never had a single bit of ammonia or nitrites from day 1. The tank was basically cycled from the start. Everything is thriving.
My 10 gallon tank has too much dirt and too much of a sand cap. The tank is heavily planted and always cloudy. Should I take apart tank and redo substrate? Can I reuse the dirt and sand I started with? Reuse some of them water? What would you do in this situation? I have yellow minnows and dwarf corys. And a ton of Father Fish plants!
Father Fish. I absolutely love your channel and the science behind what you say. I have a question concerning a dead fish. We all experience a dead friend at times and I have read online you need to remove the fish body immediately lest your aquarium have a spike in ammonia. However, I have found, maybe because I love snails in my aquariums, that the body is quickly consumed by both snails and my corry cats and plecos. Is it really that bad to leave the body there to return its nutrients to nature? (My goal when I pass is to do the same but regulations make it very difficult).
BTW - I am using your method for all my new tanks and things go splendidly! Will be purchasing some plants and your nutrient mix (ran out of my own) very, very soon!
The thing I think ppl tend to be ignorant about is time in a natural tank. I set up a deep substrate hybrid of Father Fish and Alex Williamson styles over a year ago. My hair grass literally just in the past 2 months started to really take off. The roots on my crypts were visible through the glass in a couple months, but the hair grass took almost a year to see those webs of roots and shoots all over the carpeted area all the way through 5+ inches of substrate. Give it time peeps. It needs more than the blink of and eye. Maybe even two shakes of a lamb's tail! 🤣✌️
@FatherFish would it be beneficial to collect substrate from a lake or streams and collect plants from a well planted lake and use those in an aquarium rather that buying soils and sands from a store?
here is my plan, i have great success growing plants in deep 6'' terra cotta flower pots. and you can have a bare bottom or a shallow gravel layer if you use pots, you don't need to fill your entire aquarium with 6 -8 inches of soil. i use potting soil in the pot with gravel over it. now i have bought planter baskets used for ornamental water lillies. i will fill them with potting soil and plant them with water plants. these planter baskets are 12X12X 8 inches deep and 9X9X6 and can be used to create a cliff-like wall with foreground plants in front of it. chewy has them, maybe amazon. planting in baskets has advantages, you can easily remove them if you want to break down the tank or treat it with meds/salt.
the guy you had on yesterday had a tank with a carpet of dwarf sag, which he said stays short, and goes through cycles where it stops growing. then he showed the next tank with a stand of the same plant that was a foot tall, he had it planted in deep sand or a pot, i forget now. he said he didn't know why there was such a difference. well that got my attention, i have the same plant and the same phenomena. in deep pots it grows well over a foot, but the runners coming out of the pots and carpeting the bottom are only a couple inches tall. i conclude from both of these situations that it has a hard time growing in a shallow substrate, possibly stunting it. anyway i like the idea of deep planting, getting big plants, and these baskets will fit nicely in a 75 Gal. i want amazon swords to fill up the tank, possibly like your ''mother plant''. (do you remember woolworth's pet dept? they sold sword plants for 19 cents each, i think i bought everyone they had. they also had lake malawi cichlids when they were a new fish for $4, and they had imported wild type green bettas, man i miss those days.) i believe you stated that $50 ''mother plant'' was in a pot as well.( i had a mellon sword once that grew 18'' stems and the leaves floated on the surface. it was great.) the only other way to do it is build a rock wall to retain the soil and keep it from spilling all over the tank eventually. these baskets will be spill proof and easy to hide from view. i bet those red lilly bulbs you sell will grow like gangbusters in them. anyway i live in dc and saulsbury is 90 minutes away. i'll bring a ruler....

I have Stoney River aquarium sand in black. I have a 29gal year old tank with two oranda and a few shrimp. My tank is fairly established with 1anubas and 10 jaa ferns that keep putting off babies. Green alge salad on the back wall a few hitchhiker snails that I see on occasion, some black alge on the plants. I didn't see the dirt bottom till after I put everything together. Should I drain and keep everything and put dirt on tue bottom and then putt my tank back togethor old water and all? Or do you think 2-3 inches of the sand I have will be ok? Such a cute face Grandfather Fish ♡
I won't say too much on the topic as I'm not the wonderful FF fella himself, but I will say if you break it down to dirt it, may as well keep the old water, and anything else you can. Old stuff is good stuff. I have some smaller projects that I use for temporary things that do quite well with nothing but sand and plants, as long as there is enough waste being produced, and plenty of plants. From my very basic understanding, the deeper more complex core principles presented in Father Fish's methodology, (By those more in the know than I), when properly implemented, will turn a tank from a short-term tank with an expiry date potentially, or more maintenance than one would prefer, into a long-term balanced ecosystem that does better without our interference more often than not. Other than a little cheeky feed here and there of course, to make ourselves feel better. It's a VERY deep topic, stick around and hear him out, or jump on the Discord better yet. It's crazy fun in there, and full of some real smart people.
Father fish, i followed your advice, i put sand over my gravel like you said. The turtle loves it the plants love it. But the only fish that seem to do well is my 2 goldfish and my apple snails. My plecos,tetras,guppies all die within 3 weeks (no thats not counting the ones the turtle ate). What could be wrong? (I will admit i havent done the last step u suggest in adding bacteria from a river or pond)
Qn: Diana Walstad recommended waiting out 6 weeks post submergence of the substrate before planting the tank. She deduced that it stimulates better plant growth, as the substrate fully converts from a soil substrate to an aquatic sediment. What are your thoughts on this practice, Father Fish? Would it be advantageous in practice?
She is, of course, corrdfct. The chelation takes at least that long. With sand the plants can be planted immediately and are not subject to the intensity of soil chelating. They derive nutrients early on and are able to sustain in a matter of a few days. Walstad never tried sand. Her most recent edition does recommend sand.

Yes, shrimp & snails contribute waste to the tank. I think 1"of animal still = 1 gal of water. Ie 20 gal fish tank, you can have 20" total of all animals.
What is the formula for your soil for your substrate on a tank? I have a 55 gallon tank and I need a formula for your soil and what type of sand do you use? You use pool filter sand?
Hi, I've watched 20+ of your videos, and I can't wait to restart my gravel based aquarium, I've been struggling with for more than a year. Now I know why. There's however one thing that still worries me. You say that water changes are not required, but it's still necessary to refill tank as water evaporates. Doesn't it lead to steadily increasing water hardness? Unless RO water is used for refill.
I'm going to graduate from a 12" cube to one about double that size. Call me crazy. But I got this notion, somehow, that cubes have an advantage over other dimensions of tanks. Bcz of its dimensionality being the same on all sides (only a sphere might be superior, if there were such a thing) It makes me think that, but I don't know why. So I want an 18"-24" cube or whatever is available along those lines. I want to do 3" high grade soil substrate and 3" of finest natural sand cap. Then I want to literally cram that thing full of multiple varieties of plants in an aesthetic arrangement no deeper than 2" into just the sand layer. When I do, I want to order my plants in a huge bundle from Father Fish. $16.00 for a single plant is what they are charging around here. It's ridiculous.😊

I believe that this is one of your best videos. I enjoy seeing an awesome variety of people's aquariums from all over the world. I cleaned and rinsed my sand because if I did not the water would be cloudy. I love the dried leaves in my tank as it breaks down and feeds my snails and shrimp. Thank you for the best informational video ever. My daughter has had ICK and it took out all the fish except the Bettas...., she needs to watch this and learn more about fish-keeping naturally. We need a video for people who started the wrong way like just gravel at the bottom I just covered that with aquasoil in one tank and sand capped that and in the other just put a bunch of sand on top of the gravel I let get mulmy for a bit. Instead of restarting the whole cycle of the tank so far have had no issues but was trying to avoid completely redoing the tanks and risking a startover 😅

The resurection jar can be a extreamly useful tool for starting new tanks. The 55 gallon i started i used a deep substrate system that he describes planted the tank then i put the whole jar wile full into the tank. this will allow the fauna to come out of the jar and colonize the tank... leave the jar in there for a good period of time maybe a week or 2 then take it out and set it back up again to replenish it self ect. thats what i did and it was alot of fun to watch. be sure to have leaves in the tank for the microfauna to feed on.

Started my first Father Fish 55 gallon tank this week. It’s a unique one already. I’m creating a marshy swamp waterway. The tank is about 60% filled. Floating plants all over. Natural wood and leaves and dirt and sand. A simple sponge filter. I just added 2 small bristlenose plecos and snails already have an established population!
I’m letting the tank tell me what she needs instead of forcing my will on the tank. Slowly I’ll add more plants, more fish and let this thing become the marsh I hope she becomes.
In even more time I hope she becomes a mother tank for planting my other tanks.

Here in the netherlands its easy to set up these type of tanks. We have an abundance of creeks and ponds, our outside water quality is good and our tapwater is good so it's hard to screw it up tbh

About cloud water that the particles do no precipitate a good tip to void it is to wash the sand multiple times before put it in the aquarium. I use construction sand washed it many times and could not believe that first planted aquarium simple worked fowling FF instructions even after I commiting many mistakes in the process. My next tank will be a 120cm x 50cm x 50cm that I will do my best in following the step by step process
Now exactly that issue I have water so cloudy, and even I do water changes, when I plant something, sand makes clouds in the water again....so frustrating, it's like a desert storm instead of fishes, and the plants get covered by fine sand particles...

My substrate will be 3" deep and the sand cap will be another 3" deep=6". This is a 30 gallon breeder tank I'm talking about. There will be 40-50 total small plants. They will grow and grow in size. After I plant, there will be 20 green neons added. Once this new tank is established, then my betta and 15 green neons will be moved from their 12" cube into the 30 gallon breeder. So the 30 gal. must reach a comparable state w the 12" cube before it is safe to add them over. Then the 12" will remain intact as a web of life/resurrection tank. I can take resources from the 12" as needed into the 30 gal.😊

I attempted this natural approach with two goldfish I had saved from a pond, and I found some river snails while fishing and added plants and sand from the same site I found the snails. I knew what I was going for but think I missed some necessary steps or additions because the water was cloudy and the plants would t stay down in the sand even when weighing them down with rocks. The goldfish are just too curious 😆 I am going to give it a go again now that I have them in a temporary tank while I clean and set up their 75 gallon tank. But I'm wondering if I need to purchase sand or specific soil substrate with the sand from a pet store, or if river sand would be fine too?

I absolutely love your approach to fish keeping, and honestly trust your advice above anyone else's. My question is simple though. I've heard that you can't have a sustained ecosystem with any less than a 10 gallon tank. I only have one betta, which has been very happy in his 1.3 gallon, which I want to upgrade to a 5 gallon planted tank following your guidelines. The main question is... is it possible to have a sustainable ecosystem following your "formula" in a 5 gallon betta tank? Is it possible in the current 1.3 gallon I currently have? 2 months ago, and I didn't ever see the notification 🙄 I ended up getting a 9 gallon, and now have a community tank with my betta, 3 ember, and 3 black emperor tetras living very happily together. The tank was planted with 2 anubias attached to a piece of driftwood, and several octopus plants in the back, along with duckweed. The plants have been growing so much now that I need to do some maintenance and trim a bunch out. I never had a single bit of ammonia or nitrites from day 1. The tank was basically cycled from the start. Everything is thriving.

My 10 gallon tank has too much dirt and too much of a sand cap. The tank is heavily planted and always cloudy. Should I take apart tank and redo substrate? Can I reuse the dirt and sand I started with? Reuse some of them water? What would you do in this situation? I have yellow minnows and dwarf corys. And a ton of Father Fish plants!
Install a sponge filter. The tank will clear up. Be patient. If all is good - the fish and plants are healthy - be patient.
Father Fish. I absolutely love your channel and the science behind what you say. I have a question concerning a dead fish. We all experience a dead friend at times and I have read online you need to remove the fish body immediately lest your aquarium have a spike in ammonia. However, I have found, maybe because I love snails in my aquariums, that the body is quickly consumed by both snails and my corry cats and plecos. Is it really that bad to leave the body there to return its nutrients to nature? (My goal when I pass is to do the same but regulations make it very difficult).
BTW - I am using your method for all my new tanks and things go splendidly! Will be purchasing some plants and your nutrient mix (ran out of my own) very, very soon!
As long as it's not a huge fish, it gets added to the nutrients of the tank.
The thing I think ppl tend to be ignorant about is time in a natural tank. I set up a deep substrate hybrid of Father Fish and Alex Williamson styles over a year ago. My hair grass literally just in the past 2 months started to really take off. The roots on my crypts were visible through the glass in a couple months, but the hair grass took almost a year to see those webs of roots and shoots all over the carpeted area all the way through 5+ inches of substrate. Give it time peeps. It needs more than the blink of and eye. Maybe even two shakes of a lamb's tail! 🤣✌️

the wild soil should be about half of the soil. Add peat and compost to enrich it. Cap with sand

here is my plan, i have great success growing plants in deep 6'' terra cotta flower pots. and you can have a bare bottom or a shallow gravel layer if you use pots, you don't need to fill your entire aquarium with 6 -8 inches of soil. i use potting soil in the pot with gravel over it. now i have bought planter baskets used for ornamental water lillies. i will fill them with potting soil and plant them with water plants. these planter baskets are 12X12X 8 inches deep and 9X9X6 and can be used to create a cliff-like wall with foreground plants in front of it. chewy has them, maybe amazon. planting in baskets has advantages, you can easily remove them if you want to break down the tank or treat it with meds/salt.
I have 1" of soil in my tanks and plant everything.
the guy you had on yesterday had a tank with a carpet of dwarf sag, which he said stays short, and goes through cycles where it stops growing. then he showed the next tank with a stand of the same plant that was a foot tall, he had it planted in deep sand or a pot, i forget now. he said he didn't know why there was such a difference. well that got my attention, i have the same plant and the same phenomena. in deep pots it grows well over a foot, but the runners coming out of the pots and carpeting the bottom are only a couple inches tall. i conclude from both of these situations that it has a hard time growing in a shallow substrate, possibly stunting it. anyway i like the idea of deep planting, getting big plants, and these baskets will fit nicely in a 75 Gal. i want amazon swords to fill up the tank, possibly like your ''mother plant''. (do you remember woolworth's pet dept? they sold sword plants for 19 cents each, i think i bought everyone they had. they also had lake malawi cichlids when they were a new fish for $4, and they had imported wild type green bettas, man i miss those days.) i believe you stated that $50 ''mother plant'' was in a pot as well.( i had a mellon sword once that grew 18'' stems and the leaves floated on the surface. it was great.) the only other way to do it is build a rock wall to retain the soil and keep it from spilling all over the tank eventually. these baskets will be spill proof and easy to hide from view. i bet those red lilly bulbs you sell will grow like gangbusters in them. anyway i live in dc and saulsbury is 90 minutes away. i'll bring a ruler....

I have Stoney River aquarium sand in black. I have a 29gal year old tank with two oranda and a few shrimp. My tank is fairly established with 1anubas and 10 jaa ferns that keep putting off babies. Green alge salad on the back wall a few hitchhiker snails that I see on occasion, some black alge on the plants. I didn't see the dirt bottom till after I put everything together. Should I drain and keep everything and put dirt on tue bottom and then putt my tank back togethor old water and all? Or do you think 2-3 inches of the sand I have will be ok? Such a cute face Grandfather Fish ♡
I won't say too much on the topic as I'm not the wonderful FF fella himself, but I will say if you break it down to dirt it, may as well keep the old water, and anything else you can. Old stuff is good stuff.
I have some smaller projects that I use for temporary things that do quite well with nothing but sand and plants, as long as there is enough waste being produced, and plenty of plants.
From my very basic understanding, the deeper more complex core principles presented in Father Fish's methodology, (By those more in the know than I), when properly implemented, will turn a tank from a short-term tank with an expiry date potentially, or more maintenance than one would prefer, into a long-term balanced ecosystem that does better without our interference more often than not. Other than a little cheeky feed here and there of course, to make ourselves feel better. It's a VERY deep topic, stick around and hear him out, or jump on the Discord better yet. It's crazy fun in there, and full of some real smart people.

Father fish, i followed your advice, i put sand over my gravel like you said. The turtle loves it the plants love it. But the only fish that seem to do well is my 2 goldfish and my apple snails. My plecos,tetras,guppies all die within 3 weeks (no thats not counting the ones the turtle ate). What could be wrong? (I will admit i havent done the last step u suggest in adding bacteria from a river or pond)

Qn: Diana Walstad recommended waiting out 6 weeks post submergence of the substrate before planting the tank. She deduced that it stimulates better plant growth, as the substrate fully converts from a soil substrate to an aquatic sediment. What are your thoughts on this practice, Father Fish? Would it be advantageous in practice?
She is, of course, corrdfct. The chelation takes at least that long. With sand the plants can be planted immediately and are not subject to the intensity of soil chelating. They derive nutrients early on and are able to sustain in a matter of a few days. Walstad never tried sand. Her most recent edition does recommend sand.

Yes, shrimp & snails contribute waste to the tank. I think 1"of animal still = 1 gal of water. Ie 20 gal fish tank, you can have 20" total of all animals.

Hi, I've watched 20+ of your videos, and I can't wait to restart my gravel based aquarium, I've been struggling with for more than a year. Now I know why. There's however one thing that still worries me. You say that water changes are not required, but it's still necessary to refill tank as water evaporates. Doesn't it lead to steadily increasing water hardness? Unless RO water is used for refill.
The plants need the minerals in the water.

I'm going to graduate from a 12" cube to one about double that size. Call me crazy. But I got this notion, somehow, that cubes have an advantage over other dimensions of tanks. Bcz of its dimensionality being the same on all sides (only a sphere might be superior, if there were such a thing) It makes me think that, but I don't know why. So I want an 18"-24" cube or whatever is available along those lines. I want to do 3" high grade soil substrate and 3" of finest natural sand cap. Then I want to literally cram that thing full of multiple varieties of plants in an aesthetic arrangement no deeper than 2" into just the sand layer. When I do, I want to order my plants in a huge bundle from Father Fish. $16.00 for a single plant is what they are charging around here. It's ridiculous.😊
