I am not young. This brought tears to my eyes - the fact that someone of your age is covering this in 2024. I first heard Stan Rogers sing this on Dave Sear's radio program Folk and Baroque in the early 1980s on WNYC radio. You have marvelous taste. Bravo! And you might also want to check out Bill Staines.
That's how i started too, but i have expanded into many genres, and Stan Rogers is one of those amazing artist that i lost before i was even born. Good Music is good music.
I dont know why, but ever time I listen to covers of Stan Rogers, its always missing something; like it doesnt sound quite right. This is the only cover i've listen to that really works for me. It has its own thing going for it but still has the same vibe as the original without trying to be a 100% copy.
Good cover of a song from an absolutely legendary artist. I got really into Stans music in 2020 while I was in the Army. It makes me happy to see people close to my age appreciate his music.
Hands down, my all-time favorite Stan Rogers song... and you play it so divinely! Not only is it by banjo but your voice rings like a bell :3 Thank you for this~ You really made my night!
At first i was thinking it was just a good cover but now ive realised that ive been listening to it more than stans version. Just wonderful. Hed be proud
Very well done. Stan gave us quite a few wonderful songs. His son Nathan has done some excellent covers of Barrett's Privateers, Flowers of Bermuda, Northwest Passage, and probably others I've forgotten. I'd bet money Stan or Nathan would be happy with this cover. Great Job.
Indeed, a fantastic cover. I have very much enjoyed it. It is so nice to see that I am not the only young one that loves Stan's songs. Thank you for doing that, your voice is fantastic! I love it.
Indeed, Christopher, indeed. How I wish that there would be more. Can't find anyone to talk to about folk and filk (if you know it you know it) nowadays. @christophermcculloch8781
It's always a joy to see there are still people set on keeping Stans music and legacy alive! Hats off to your excellent singing and playing ma'am, God bless ya
I gotta say, you absolutely crushed this cover, excellent job! Stan's one of those musicians that died before I was born, but I'd waste a genie's 3 wishes on watching him live. Oh wait, one of the Genie's rules is not bringing people back from the dead, so I guess i'm boned either way. ...pls cover "Working Joe" if you're so inclined :)
This scratches an itch I have in my brain that I have every time I either come home from work or am about to go in. I definitely feel like an idiot for taking it 😅
Hey another Stan Rogers fan, I love Stan. “45 Years” was the first song I learned to fingerpick and Marry Ellen Carter” was the first song I learned to play on guitar. Since then I have learned more songs by Stan and I am lear how to sing and I love singing Stan Rogers.
How lucky I feel to have had this video be suggested to me. Seriously, excellent job, love your voice, love your pickin, and Stan Rogers to boot. Also, as I was writing this, I enjoyed your playing a lot in Fish and Whistle.
I wish more people knew who Stan Rogers was i loved The Athens Queen when they would play at Disneyland in 2013 New Orleans Sqaure thank you for keeping this on the archives and hopefully reaches more people
Ya just got a new subscriber. I've never seen anything before this but this was beautiful. Ive loved this song for years but your rendition brought a whole new experience to it. Keep up the amazing work!
Great music! I love every stan rogers cover that i can get because it brings new life to his already beautiful music. I loved this and would love to see maybe more Stan in the future, but I love your originals too! Thank you for the cover!
The Mary Ellen Carter and 45 years would sound absolutely great, but there's so many songs! Any that you would be able to play I'm sure would be wonderful to hear. Any ones that interest you maybe
@@liahavlena Field behind the plow would be wonderful! I also think that Workin' Joe is another great song and very similar to The Idiot and Field Behind the Plow
it's really good! I might only recommend altering the mix to make the banjo a little quieter, your voice is so lively and free it should be easier to hear
@averagejoey2000 I do not have a mix lol. I just try to sit as far back from my computer as I can and elevate the microphone away from the banjo. Banjo is, unfortunately at times, a powerful instrument
Congrats on how many views on this one Lia! I really hope it leads to more people checking out your bitchin' catalog. Feels cool to be an "og" fan. I know for fact the mountain goats guitarist digs your work by happenstance after the Boston show. You impress the people you cover with originals that's pretty effin' epic!

I'm a diehard metalhead but I've always loved Stan Rogers, and this cover is great.
I love punk and metal as well but I can only really write and play folk music, so I get you lol
That's how i started too, but i have expanded into many genres, and Stan Rogers is one of those amazing artist that i lost before i was even born. Good Music is good music.
I always loved this song, and then I visited Alberta. Oh boy, every word is truth.
I went to Alberta last summer and thought the same thing
Yeahh I’ve lived here my whole life, don’t know much besides these plains. Great cover and hope you both are doing well!
I worked oil for 6 years out there...trust me this song is 100 times more accurate than you might know
I dont know why, but ever time I listen to covers of Stan Rogers, its always missing something; like it doesnt sound quite right. This is the only cover i've listen to that really works for me. This comment meant a lot to me. I always try to achieve that tone with any of my covers I post.
@@liahavlena You did well
It is the lilt he has when he sings it. Most covers are flat in comparison.
Those Morris dancers are gonna have a hell of a time trying to follow this version!

Thank you! I'd love to live off grid in a cabin somewhere someday. But for now it's apartment life for me!
I could see that, and I lived it. It takes self confidence determination and commitment not to mention courage. On display in spades every video
Also, golden jackal song by m.g. would be an epic cover

This is a song I often sing to my dog when we're out wandering in the bush. You do it much better, I'm sure Stan would approve.
But, more importantly, does your dog approve?
