The Idoit is a great piece by Stan Rogers -perfectly encapsulating the struggle of Newfounland and Labrador workers having to leave for other provinces to make a living for their families.
Here are the lyrics to sing along!! And thank you Colm for the great piece! I often take these night shift walks When the foreman's not around I turn my back on the cooling stacks And make for open ground Far out beyond the tank-farm fence Where the gas flare makes no sound I forget the stink and I always think Back to that Eastern town I remember back six years ago This western life I chose And every day the news would say Some factory's going to close Well, I could have stayed to take the dole But I'm not one of those I take nothing free, and that makes me An idiot, I suppose So I bid farewell to the Eastern town I never more will see But work I must so I eat this dust And breathe refinery Oh, I miss the green and the woods and streams And I don't like cowboy clothes But I like being free and that makes me An idiot, I suppose So come all you fine young fellows Who've been beaten to the ground This western life's no paradise But it's better than lying down Oh, the streets aren't clean, and there's nothing green And the hills are dirty brown But the government dole will rot your soul Back there in your hometown So bid farewell to the Eastern town You never more will see There's self-respect and a steady cheque In this refinery You will miss the green and the woods and streams And the dust will fill your nose But you'll be free, and just like me An idiot, I suppose
Colm has a way of taking songs written by other people about very real and personal things and making it sound like he's speaking from his own experience. This cover gives me some of the same vibes I get from his original songs. He really does deserve to stand among the greats of folk music!
I have been fortunate enough to twice run into Garnet Rogers (Stan's brother and the guitarist/chief fiddler in the band) who is himself a wonderful singer and musician. This was a nice treat on a crappy day on the ocean. The musical changes absolutely both honor the original AND make this truly your own. Thanks Colm!
I don't know if longer comments engage the algorithm more or not. But the time and dedication Colm has put into developing all his skills - from composing to singing and everything in-between - shines through in every new release. Say very handsome and thank you for yet another awesome song.
I'm always happy when people cover Stan Rogers. He was such a great talent and it is great that his music is still spreading farther in the world. I think my grandfather for introducing me to his music so many years ago. Brilliant cover, Mr. McGuinness.
This week my girl and I were finally able to meet up after being apart for a long time. We listened to you every day, your voice reminds me of the things she and I did together. At this point you mean home to us ❤
The accent with colms tone is just too mindblowing. I love his voice and I loved this song for a long time. But colm just adds an addictive quality too all his songs.
This song appeals to all those who must leave their homes for a struggle in a new place. Stan Rogers' music expresses the true joy and strength of the Canadian eastern spirit. I always get chills knowing its the eastern blood in me that makes me strong like those fishermen before me. It reminds me how much I love Canada, not just for her land and for her sea, but for the history we take pride in, and for the lessons we've learned. True North Strong and Free.
Just wanted to say, it means a lot that you covered this and did so with respect to the original sentiment it was written with. I only vaguely remembered this song from my childhood and rediscovered it when I had to chase work around Western Canada during a layoff in 2016. Really got me through some rough days.
Same. Glad he had the tact that some others in his genre lack. As I was coming up on the end of the song I was like “ Don’t you dare, don’t you dare, don’t you- Oh thank God”

If you ever come to Germany I am so going to go to your concert! From what I see your upcoming tour is in USA/UK/Ireland which I probably won't be able to attend sadly :(
It's good to see Stan the man making rounds online. He was a great storyteller and, in my opinion, a worthy Canadian legend like few others. I personally enjoy The Giant and The North West Passage. Great cover, as always!
It is not often that music takes you down a journey, its even less frequent for a song to touch ones soul in ways that many would not understand. As I sit and listen to this memories dance around my room and a breeze blows through crisp to the touch. I have no connection to this song however you as a musician capture the real essence of so many songs and in doing that create a connection that is truly beyond words, its something that can only be felt. Thank you for sharing you talent with us all! God bless you and your family may your way forever be blessed.
It's sentiments like that which spoil me for "shallower" music. Something can have an amazing sound, but it's not every song that can truly stir the soul.
i'm 24, eldest sibling of 3. i work in the government, have arguably well-off parents, and still living with my mom. yet i resonate with these songs so much. maybe it's the 5 hours daily commute and insane loads of meetings and paperworks... my heart is in gamedev and animation, but a man gotta do what he's got to do. at least this kind of life is better than laying down.
Wait how the hell did I miss this? This is one of my favorite Stan Rogers songs. And what a wonderful cover. I'm sad that I'm late but so pleased to have spotted this.

Here are the lyrics to sing along!! And thank you Colm for the great piece!
I often take these night shift walks
When the foreman's not around
I turn my back on the cooling stacks
And make for open ground
Far out beyond the tank-farm fence
Where the gas flare makes no sound
I forget the stink and I always think
Back to that Eastern town
I remember back six years ago
This western life I chose
And every day the news would say
Some factory's going to close
Well, I could have stayed to take the dole
But I'm not one of those
I take nothing free, and that makes me
An idiot, I suppose
So I bid farewell to the Eastern town
I never more will see
But work I must so I eat this dust
And breathe refinery
Oh, I miss the green and the woods and streams
And I don't like cowboy clothes
But I like being free and that makes me
An idiot, I suppose
So come all you fine young fellows
Who've been beaten to the ground
This western life's no paradise
But it's better than lying down
Oh, the streets aren't clean, and there's nothing green
And the hills are dirty brown
But the government dole will rot your soul
Back there in your hometown
So bid farewell to the Eastern town
You never more will see
There's self-respect and a steady cheque
In this refinery
You will miss the green and the woods and streams
And the dust will fill your nose
But you'll be free, and just like me
An idiot, I suppose
