Back in Spring, Talise was coming through town to play with our pals at the Sunday Night Revue, and we reached out to film her playing her song Western Pine, talk about clawhammer banjo, and get a glimpse of that sweet sweet van life.
Talise is an exciting young musician in the Ontario old time scene, with a powerful voice, impressive clawhammer chops, and a deep respect for the roots of the music she plays. In this video, she's performing on her fretless gourd banjo built by Lowly Mountain Banjos - stick around at the end of the video to hear a bit about what it means to her to get in touch with the roots of the instrument.
Western Pine is a song about growing up and coming to terms with the woes of the world. Accompanied by the sweet resonant sound of her gourd banjo, Talise sings about the goings on beneath the Western Pine.

The sound of the fretless banjo reminds me of the sound of Mongolian stringed instruments. A curious hybrid between country music and something more ancient. Great vocals and indeed a great song! Very impressed.

I was reading a story about Fairport Convention when I went to TH-cam for a couple of their tunes. You came up as a related video and as I'm always poking around for new musical ideas (I'm a musician and songwriter), I figured I'd give you a quick listen. Glad I did. You have a great voice and the tune is very good. I like the clawhammer gourd banjo sound. I know what you mean about getting your tunes out there so you can move on to what's next.
