Stan Rogers has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard, so when I searched him on TH-cam I was disappointed to see barely any videos if him. So glad this recording exists, and it's such good quality too!
I would have gladly have taken my Morris side anywhere in North America to dance to Stan playing the Idiot. Unfortunately he passed before I started Morris dancing. And yes, we had a dance written to the Idiot.
Not enough footage of the band in existence, but so glad to have what there is of this wonderful group. I only saw them once, but what a stage filling group they were. Luckily we still have Garnet and his talents.
Salutations, respect and love from another "Idiot". I just learned what a "Morris dancer" is. God love and rest you, Stan Rogers! The comedy between songs is pure gold! I would certainly have rowed out in my dory with Stan to the Athens Queen! Just for the fun of it!
Thank you for posting this. I grew up in guysborough county, NS where Stan is practically a godlike folk hero. Living on the west coast as an adult I finally get why me Dad would play these songs roaring drunk in the kitchen when he’d return from the Alberta oil world. Brings a fucking tear to my maritimer heart bud, thank ya.
I've heard the tape of this concert. But having gotten to see Stan perform in person, twice, this video reminds me of how very professional he was. He had this fantastic voice and great playing and songwriting and yet when he performed, it came across with such passion and such showmanship. He was really in the right job, that's for sure. Such a wealth for folk music.
We Americans were only privileged to hear/see his music in the USA for a very short time. I discovered his music only by happenstance when I took a "flyer" and bought his Halifax album via an old folk catalog from Rediscover Music. The best "flyer" I ever bought. What a gift he had.
Americans visiting the 1000 Islands in Ontario just loved a cassette of Fogarty's Cove so we gave it to them. They sent us a sympathy card when Stan died much too soon.
Oh, I was only two when Stan died, but I’ve grown up with his music and Garnet’s being played in my home. From Fresh Water is my favorite Stan album. I still put it on when I’m doing projects around the house. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Garnet play twice, and he’s wonderful. His ballads are just as beautiful.l Really, no one compares to either of them. I’m very sorry I missed out on seeing Stan and Garnet together in person.
Loving and playing both folk and rock'n'roll, Stan's death hit me as hard as Jimi's or Duane's. I'm still in mourning. This video is priceless. What a great artist. I took the opportunity some years ago to tell his mother that, in my musical world, he's the best that ever was.
The idiot hits close to home for my life, Working Joe is the first song I ever actually listened to the lyrics of, Canol road I love the story so much I want to animate the lyrics, in the military my platoon had a lot of east coasters, we just to sing Northwest passage on ruck marches to make the time go by
Thank you Wayne for making this available. I am in the process of reading Garnet's memoire Night Drive (a wonderful read btw) and this is an incredible insight into what they were creating on stage in the early 80's. Tomorrow will mark the 40th anniversary on that horrible tragic flight that stole Stan from us. RIP Stan Rogers, your music will live forever.
Stan Rogers was a family friend who died when I was only 2 weeks old. I believe that means this is likely the ONLY Stan Rogers concert recorded while I was alive. It was a very interesting thing to find on TH-cam. Thank you
Thank you Mayday. It's terrible to hear stories like this, but they sure help to appreciate life and the man. 1983 may seems like a long time, when in reality, it's just the blink of an eye.
I miss Stan's voice. I have the Idiot on my favourite mix that I play in the car all the time. I know all his songs by heart. I first heard him when I was in University in the 70's. And to all the sudden Sea Shanty trend well Stan was there first. I almost forgot thank you for the upload.
I am a huge Stan Fan and play a lot of his music on my guitar, sadly no where near as well as he did. I cannot tell you how happy your videos are making me. I have had the pleasure to see his brother and his son perform, this is just fantastic. Thanks so much.
10:46 Nice to hear Half a Heart in a live performance. Just goes to show that along with all the other numbers presented here that Stan was as good live as he was on record. Actually, I'd even go as far as to say that Stan sounded even better live than on some of his albums. Not because of any flaws in Stan's performance, but to me it seemed that a number of his studio albums were overproduced which, at times, detracted from some of the songs. I much prefer the live versions of Field Behind the Plow, The Idiot, and Working Joe over their studio counterparts. Either way, Stan was a truly outstanding singer/songwriter and it's tragic that he was taken from us so soon.
Yes, I didn't make it to Stan's last Philadelphia area concert. I thought I'd catch him some other time. Saw Garnet at UPENN afterwards. The Idiot is a great song referring to the internal Canadian migration to the Alberta oil fields by the Maritime fishermen when the cod fishing was suspended. "The government dole will take your soul." Many new Canadian immigrants don't know about these internal refugees.
This is a wonderful posting for those of us who never had the opportunity to see Stan in concert. I'm surprised, though, that Ariel Rogers hasn't been after you as she can be very proprietary about these things.
Bill Edward - Oh, like suing her BIL to prevent him from ever performing Stan’s music, and making sure he doesn’t get a dime of royalties? Yeah, she sounds like a person to be leery of.
Seriously wow. I know GR always wanted to do his own thing and I'm sure he didn't want to live in Stan's shadow. I always still thought he could do that and still play more of Stan's music. I mean he was right there with his violin. If he wasn't directly part of the creative force behind a song you can bet Stan wrote parts for GR to play or have a say in. It has always baffled me that GR doesn't give the fans that show up what they really want....a bit of the past. GR is a gifted musician in his own right but these concerts with them both are just magical. It seems there is way more to it. @@ItIsJustJudy Thank you for the comment and have a safe and happy new year. PS. Anymore juicy tidbits like this please feel free to share. Oh and doesn't GR run the website? If you don't wanna respond here I can be reached lucifuge1973@gmail.com Kindest regards Oren
To the one person who downvoted this video: I hope every pair of underwear you don for the rest of all eternity chafes like the inside of satan's bag of wool.
"The Idiot" live is as wonderful as I ever imagined. Tragedy that we lost him. He went as a hero though.
Stan Rogers has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard, so when I searched him on TH-cam I was disappointed to see barely any videos if him. So glad this recording exists, and it's such good quality too!
Have you seen "Westmaryland"? The channel I mean, on TH-cam; they've got alot
youre not gonna be happy when i tell why there are barely any recordings of him
I just type in Stan Rogers and I find a vast amount of material.
I would have gladly have taken my Morris side anywhere in North America to dance to Stan playing the Idiot. Unfortunately he passed before I started Morris dancing. And yes, we had a dance written to the Idiot.
As an Irishman I adore Stan and his music...but I also have a gra for Morris...so I'm conflicted 😆
I was on the Ann Arbor Morris team & my friends made up a dance to "The Idiot" & performed it for him.
Great sports!
His way too early death still brings pain to my soul. However, he left us such a legacy of his great music that he will never truly die.
Not enough footage of the band in existence, but so glad to have what there is of this wonderful group.
I only saw them once, but what a stage filling group they were. Luckily we still have Garnet and his talents.
One of the greatest talents from Canada and one of the greatest voices ever…period!
I've been reading Garnet's book "Night Drive" about he and Stan and the early days. 700+ pages of great story telling.
Salutations, respect and love from another "Idiot". I just learned what a "Morris dancer" is.
God love and rest you, Stan Rogers! The comedy between songs is pure gold! I would certainly have rowed out in my dory with Stan to the Athens Queen! Just for the fun of it!
l'll be listening forever.
We all will.

Great tribute.
Gooo God he was amazing. A talent to be missed and never replaced.

Stan's Northwest Passage is the best Canadian song and album ever!🦑
I have always be haunted by Make and Break Harbour where he forecasts the death of the cod fishery long before it was shut down.
I love the audience doing the FANCY clapping for " The Idiot."
The third song is "Half Of A Heart" off of Stan's final, posthumous studio album 'From Fresh Water'.

Slowly but surely getting the whole concert, it seems. Thanks again!
There is so much Nova Scotia in Garnett's fiddle playing.

What a pleasure to see Stan and his band in concert....Thanks for posting.this treasure.......John...
If you can't appreciate a working person's melody, then you haven't yet been a human.
Wow where's this been hiding all these years
Was almost 40 years ago now, and still great.
... *** GREAT PERFORMANCE *** ...... ! (1983 ) LIVE

Best of Stan
1. The Idiot
2. North west passage
3. Flower of Bermuda
4. Rolling down to old maui
5. Barretts privateers
Stan singing Workin' Joe really reminds me of, Clem Tholets Golden days.
Finally! Wait i'm only 27 years old iv'e been waiting countless years for this. Thanks! Cheers

Wow thank you so much. It's great that even after all this time we can still get to enjoy new versions of these songs
Thank you for uploading this :)
OMG - I turned on some morris dancers on You Tube and Stan's music fit exactly! Scary.
Thank you for posting. It was worth you while. I am happy.

Bless You for posting this
Thanks so much for posting these. Incredible that you have this show. Keep them coming!
Thanks for this. I miss Stan and Knowlton too!!😏
The dude on the far left has so much energy and I am just here for it.
Garnet Rogers, Stan’s brother
Garnet has started touring again. Well worth finding. Or Stan’s son Nathan.

Nice swells fiddle man!
too bad this existence isn't possible anymore. sounds nice. I'm disappointed when I'm denied overtime and have to work my second job.
10:42 for Half of a Heart
I think Stan Rogers is to Canada as Luke Kelly is to Ireland
Stan was right. Morris Dancers would find "The Idiot" irresistable.
Who is the bass player?????? He's who???
Jim Morison Bass
It’s such a sweet tone
