DIXIE'S LAND

- Back in 2010, Ryan Kelley of Intersection Films asked us if we would contribute our treatment of “Dixie’s Land” to be the opening of the film documentary that Ryan and his partner, Trent Reeves, were making about the classic Dan Emmett song. We were flattered to be so considered and of course readily agreed. We rendezvoused with the film-makers during the July Gettysburg reenactment that year and filmed our all-acoustic, all-authentic period instrument version.
It took quite a while for Intersection to get the piece completed, but in 2017 they were finally able to get it screened on various individual PBS and other TV broadcast stations across the country, as well as in various college and university settings. Intersection Films’ “Dixie” is an interesting and entertaining piece - clearly relevant in today’s turbulent and politically charged atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the full documentary is no longer available, but a ‘revised trailer’ may be found on TH-cam: • Dixie Documentary Revi...
We are presenting here the full recording made that day, which Ryan generously provided to us at our request. We feel it’s especially appealing due to its relaxed and comfortable air, yet vital and energetic presentation. It’s just plain FUN ! It is our hope that when watching, folks can put aside any prejudices they might feel and simply try to enjoy this classic American song in the context of the period. - เพลง
Imagine having the audacity to think this song is racist. This is art.
Aiden Hall
It’s a good song but what it represents because of movements after the war like the white league makes it something to be disdained, much like how the battle flag of the army of northern Virginia is a good flag but because of what people used it to represent after the war it became very much a symbol of oppression.
Abraham Lincoln also liked this song

-Early Cyler’s hat
i think that many people often associate this song with racism due to the fact it was made for minstrel shows. some versions of the song do actually have lyrics that support abolition but the original was supposed to be for a black face performer talking about how, despite being freed, he wants to go back to the plantation
i do genuinely like the song but i cant support many of the racist views the song originally intended
They call everything racist.

What I love about this song, is that in WWI 1917 when the first american soldiers were getting off the boat in England/ France in preperation to attack Germany, the bands that were hired to greet them, played this song, as they were unable to think of a song that better represented the States at the time, not because of any racial reasons, but becasue it was unusually upbeat considering the state our country and in turn the world was, yet our attitude was unwavering, and to the Europeans, they saw no difference between north and south, Yank or Dixie. We were just the crazy bastards happy to go to war for them, and considering this and the union version were representatives of our bloodiest war, saw it fitting to play it for us.

"DixieLand" History: "Although known as a Southern anthem, “Dixie’s Land,” aka “Dixie” was written for the minstrel stage by Daniel Decatur Emmett in New York City. The song was so popular in the South that it became generally accepted as the rallying song of the Confederacy.
Abraham Lincoln loved the song since he first heard it at a show by the Rumsey and Newcomb Minstrels in Chicago in 1860. According to a fellow attorney who attended the show with him, after “Dixie’s Land” was played, Lincoln clapped and shouted “Let’s have it again! Let’s have it again!”
Edit: I made a mistake about the roots of the Dix (and I knew better). Thanks to Ted Lawrence for reminding me. "DixieLand" comes from The Citizen's Bank of Louisiana, chartered in 1833. The bank issued 10-dollar notes, with the red colored notes printed with the French "dix" ("ten") on the back. They were known as "dixie" notes and were traded especially in the cotton trade up the Mississippi. To have a pocketful of Dixies meant you came from New Orleans and had sold your cotton. Up north, they knew "DixieLand" was down south where they traded in "dixies".

"Dixie" is a song with music and lyrics by the Northerner Daniel Decatur Emmett (included in the Artists, Movements and Ideas section of the Song of America database.) His song was first performed in a minstrel show in New York City in 1859, but it soon swept the South, and when Confederate President Jefferson Davis took the oath of office in 1861, the band played “Dixie.” Southern troops marched into battle singing the song, and it lifted the spirits of the pro-slavery South for all the years of the war. The composer, who supported the Union, is reported to have said, “If I had known to what use they were going to put my song, I’ll be damned if I’d have written it.”
--Sheila Gaffney
Hmmm. All true. Y'know, they say hindsight is always 20/20. I wonder - if he had known how blatantly racist black-face minstrelsy would become, would he have given up his very successful career (as a minstrel performer for which he wrote the song...) ? Just sayin'.

Que Colombia resuelva su propia guerra civil!
Hello from columbia south Carolina lol
I thought you would say South Carolina 🤣
My wife is Colombian from Cali. I am a from Petersburg. We dont need a national government for nothing!
@Messenger Colombia is a mess politically, in the past the country suffered from centralism, then came the separation of Venezuela and Ecuador and later a civil war.
Then the government decided to split offices only between the two main political parties to end the war and the commies got angry, but most importantly, they've also got a nice argument to use as a banner for people to join their cause - corruption and a new oligarchy.
Their arguments where real, the government was truly corrupted, but their objectives as a faction where socialist crap.
Then came the bandorelism criminals and later the everlasting guerrillas supported bot by Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador (for some time) and even Nicaragua.
The conflict has been long and violent, the commies lost support. But the governments from the right are into way too many corruption scandals, they own a lot of land and distribute a lot of tax money into their own families, so the left is gaining way too much support, those idiots don't think about politics but of some sort of revenge. And their populist representative is as corrupt as their counterparts in office, even worse as he was an ex-guerrilla member and the destitute mayor of Bogotá for not doing actually anything and messing up with the city. It's confusing speech is what has many people who seem to suffer from amnesia supporting him
What's left clean of the country's political environment are the Center and Center-right parties. The rest is a bunch of chimpanzees who only use the congress to throw rocks at each other and sleep rather than to do something useful for the country.
But you know, as Plato criticized democracy for most people to choice sofists, populists and clowns as leaders rather than actual politicians, philosophers and people with actual knowledge who are truly commited to that charge.
For now our country is a polarised mess and advance is slow.
We don't need more liberalism or left policies, we just need to end corruption and the conflict will be over.
who's still listening to this in 1863?
Seriously ! Am I right ?!

We'll all go down to Dixie, away, away
Each Dixie boy must understand that he must mind his Uncle Sam

I would have preferred a rewrite of the Articles of Confederation rather than the constitution however...

That was the song of my high school , William B. Travis , in Austin Texas, proud to be a rebel
God bless America!

! Viva el Sur.! Abajo Yankeelandia.! La auténtica Norteamérica es la Confederación !
Hey upload us a song from your civil war? Spaniard!
@@seamonster936 Start with Ay Carmela - Viva La Quince Brigada which inspired Viva La Quinta Brigade which was penned to honour the Irish volunteers of the International Brigade.
Pascal Lo Buono What?
Pascal Lo Buono Yes I know he’s Spanish. I don’t understand your reference to blacks and non-whites.
I am British but love this song and all the history of the Civil War. I might be a Southern boy at heart!
Do you mean to like slavery?? Would you have slaves??? No need to answer.... you are British..!!
Humberto Flores No,not at all slavery was and is wrong. You may have misunderstood me and I apologise for that or any hurt that I may have caused. I am interested in history and the Civil War is one of my interests. I hope I treat each person that I meet with the respect and dignity that they deserve and how I would like to be treated.
Your Empire should have
Joined the Confederates as the european powers looks at the union so weak
Being Southern has nothing to do with race or nationality. It has to do with your heart. For liberty!
Humberto Flores hurr durr Confederate= slaves. Slaves bad! What do you think of all the other ancient civilizations that practiced slavery? They are Nazis as well?
I’m a western man, who has a heart for the south. Beautiful.
I think this song is totally beautiful and amazing and awesome song
I’m biracial and proud to be southern. Because of the the media and hate groups who refuse to let the horrible past die, they have given the south a bad image. Most southerners are proud, hard working, God fearing people. No different than anyone else.
Who Dat Mafia sorry that your parents did that to you

Yup, the anti white media is getting old, we just want to be happy and get along with everyone.
Why are people in the replies insulting you for bieng biracial? Or are these just edgy jokes that im about to get whooshed to?
(And im pretty sure most people are biracial in someway)
I love this song , Great support from Czech Republic
Awesome! What talent. Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
I'm a Australian and love that beuitiful song a real toe tapper I'm listerning and singing Dixie to all the cows and chooks even the ducks are running and doing a jig , god bless cheers from bullamakanka .
It gives me some hope to see people who still love the the southern culture of old.
I don't really mind if the people display confederate flags, as long as its the right one. The one that is all white.
@Cameron Putt Yeah you mean playing a song that supported slavery... You don't see germans going around celebrating nazi history do you?
@Cameron Putt It's a southern song and many southerners supported slavery
VirtualizingReality germany has statues of nazi soldiers, most of them respect that they gave their lives for something they truly believed in
@Cameron Putt Typical leftist response
Absolutely beautiful, keep up the southern spirit!

I wish I was in Dixie!

Hooray for Dixie! Greetings from Slovakia.
God bless y'all for bringing this great music to life. Living in the great state of Georgia, it brings tears to my eyes listening to the music of our ancestors.
Southern Patriot your a bigot!!racist transphobic sexist bot!!!
GTU_AK the Yankees can do what they want, but they will never strip us of our spirit
@charlysatriani1 bad troll
GTU_Ak We’ll consider the source of that comment. You are thrusting your 21st century morals onto 19th century people. Cannot do that.
The banjoes rock in this tune! Thanks for the performance
Ой,загорелась,можно мечтать,я игрвю на скрипке,хочу на вашу полянку.❤❤❤,спасибо вам,чудесные люди
Gretting from a Cuban fella that loves Dixie's Land
Thank you very much !
A decent amount of Cubans fought for the south.
I'm french. I've been really passionate about the history of the civil war for month now. It starts to make me interested on American revolution also or the history of New York. For the first time, I think, the history of the civil war gives me the envy to travel to USA and I also strarts to feel linked to America as a contiuation of my dear Europe in the new world. And your band is the best band of traditional songs from the civil war, for sure !
you should read up on your American francophone brothers the Cajuns and Acadians. vivre les francophone.
also go listen to the balfa brother's- La danse de Mardi Gras
The more you read about American history, especially in the 18th century, you will see how much it is tied up with Europe. It should be obvious, but many in Europe and America seek to divide our common history.
You are welcome, with Southern hospitality. To get the full experience, I suggest going to a small-medium sized Baptist or Presbyterian church. There will be Southern Gospel music that you should hear.✝️❤️🙂
The French Huguenots settled in North and South Carolina.
@@brianleabickerton3918 When Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes (it had been a religious tolerance edict), it unleashed a wave of persecution against the French Protestants, of which the Hugenots were the largest sect. It created a situation comparable to the Nazi persecution of the Jews, which had the effect of driving out some of their most talented people. Because of their emphasis on Bible study, they had a very high literacy rate, and were a group of professionals that included watchmakers, paper makers, glass blowers and lense makers, and a host of other modern and necessary skills needed in what was for the time a modernizing economy. Many fled to Switzerland, many others went to Holland, some to England, and yes, many went to the New World. Their descendants love among us to this day.
Love Dixie land from Brazil. Southren people and culture are epic 🤟🤟🤟
