I'm from Italy. I have been many times to the United States but where I left my heart are the southern states. The only place in the world that makes me feel at home, even better. I have friends over there that I talk to on a weekly basis. When the pandemic ends, I'm also thinking about moving out. You in the band are amazing. Bravi! Bravissimi!
What I love about this song, is that in WWI 1917 when the first american soldiers were getting off the boat in England/ France in preperation to attack Germany, the bands that were hired to greet them, played this song, as they were unable to think of a song that better represented the States at the time, not because of any racial reasons, but becasue it was unusually upbeat considering the state our country and in turn the world was, yet our attitude was unwavering, and to the Europeans, they saw no difference between north and south, Yank or Dixie. We were just the crazy bastards happy to go to war for them, and considering this and the union version were representatives of our bloodiest war, saw it fitting to play it for us.
Imagine having the audacity to think this song is racist. This is art. edit: Thank you for the pin, gentlemen. Years later, I still love this piece, and your rendition.
Aiden Hall It’s a good song but what it represents because of movements after the war like the white league makes it something to be disdained, much like how the battle flag of the army of northern Virginia is a good flag but because of what people used it to represent after the war it became very much a symbol of oppression.
i think that many people often associate this song with racism due to the fact it was made for minstrel shows. some versions of the song do actually have lyrics that support abolition but the original was supposed to be for a black face performer talking about how, despite being freed, he wants to go back to the plantation i do genuinely like the song but i cant support many of the racist views the song originally intended
Would those be the same kind of 'morons' that 'ran off' to Lexington Green and the Concord Bridge in 1775... a mere 86 years earlier ?@@withlessAsbestos

"DixieLand" History: "Although known as a Southern anthem, “Dixie’s Land,” aka “Dixie” was written for the minstrel stage by Daniel Decatur Emmett in New York City. The song was so popular in the South that it became generally accepted as the rallying song of the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln loved the song since he first heard it at a show by the Rumsey and Newcomb Minstrels in Chicago in 1860. According to a fellow attorney who attended the show with him, after “Dixie’s Land” was played, Lincoln clapped and shouted “Let’s have it again! Let’s have it again!” Edit: I made a mistake about the roots of the Dix (and I knew better). Thanks to Ted Lawrence for reminding me. "DixieLand" comes from The Citizen's Bank of Louisiana, chartered in 1833. The bank issued 10-dollar notes, with the red colored notes printed with the French "dix" ("ten") on the back. They were known as "dixie" notes and were traded especially in the cotton trade up the Mississippi. To have a pocketful of Dixies meant you came from New Orleans and had sold your cotton. Up north, they knew "DixieLand" was down south where they traded in "dixies".

I mean, it isn't even "the Confederate's" song... it's from before the war, and was (and still is, imo) a folksong. The comments are replied/hearted to/by the channel owner and they must get tired of seeing it too.
Well, aren't you kind to say so ?! Yeah, it gets downright boring to see that some folks just don't have any sense of history or context. The knee-jerk 'racist song' complaint from people who haven't a clue about the actual lyrics gets tedious. I don't mind the 'rattlesnakes and traitors' ones all that much because some are just joking and some are from sincerely 'union' folk having a bit of fun. Thanks for taking the time to transcribe it all for anyone who might want to educate themselves. There are more verses, but that's the way we play it.
As a northerner i kinda have to agree with you on that. Firstly I want to say that when I first saw this I immediately had the knee-jerk reaction to press dislike (now reversed) and still listened, but it was this reply of yours that changed my mind to a certain degree. Secondly I do agree that writing this song off as racist is stupid ( I even never did it), and stems at if you could separate the art from the artist (or in this case fans of the song). There is no debate that the song was popular with the traitors in the confederacy who in some states said they seceded due to slavery (which is where the racism reasoning comes in) (also Lincoln liked it as people like to point out). However if I am correct dixie was written in 1859, so it could be argued that for some it has nothing to do with the civil war. But i am not too familiar with the different versions of dixie but i am on a decent level of familiarity with this version and it seems that the only mention of war is "i will take my stand to live and die in dixie" so at least with this version i find it hardly if not at all connected to the war. Lastly I have to note how noble and incredible it is that you reply to comments to this day and i just wanted to use my last point to thank you for being dedicated it this rendition.
@@ariejohnson1944 Im glad it did something good. I don't know too much about other versions but one of the first ones I remember had "To live or die in Dixie" which the "or" rather than an "and" was on purpose, to say that they will go to the death or win. The same one also had "To arms!" as a line in the chorus which was a literal call to action. It was the first version I ever became familiar with living in my state of Kansas. I know that these guys don't mean anything racist or prejudiced against anybody, and im glad some people can see it rather then just say its something and not take any care to really see.
@@ariejohnson1944 Thanks a lot for that, arie ! It is really gratifying to - once again - encounter an open mind. I am going to share an interesting piece of information with you that might further illuminate the matter (if you don't mind taking a few more minutes out of your day). The song was written by Dan Emmett in 1859, as you noted. But here's the interesting part - the part that makes the 'racist' tag a lot harder to pin: The song was first published in 1859, in NYC, and has long been attributed to Daniel D. Emmett of Mt. Vernon OH. The song was created for use as a 'walk-around' in the closing portion of a minstrel performance, which featured the talents of the individual members of the group. I will cede to you that 'minstrelsy' as a genre was based upon racist stereotyping, so no need to argue THAT point here. However, there is strong and credible evidence that a musical free black family, named Snowden, also lived in Mt. Vernon. They were neighbors of and friends with Emmett. An entire book was written about their association, whose central premise is that the song in question, "Dixie's Land”, may very well have been a collaboration with Emmett, or even entirely written by the Snowdens and co-opted by Emmett (a quite common occurrence in the years before the emergence of copyright laws). If true, it would seem a hard case to make that the Snowdens too were racists. If you would like to learn more, here's a link to the book: www.amazon.com/Way-Up-North-Dixie-Confederate/dp/1560982586/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Snowden+family+and+Dixie&qid=1593278800&s=books&sr=1-1

@Messenger Colombia is a mess politically, in the past the country suffered from centralism, then came the separation of Venezuela and Ecuador and later a civil war. Then the government decided to split offices only between the two main political parties to end the war and the commies got angry, but most importantly, they've also got a nice argument to use as a banner for people to join their cause - corruption and a new oligarchy. Their arguments where real, the government was truly corrupted, but their objectives as a faction where socialist crap. Then came the bandorelism criminals and later the everlasting guerrillas supported bot by Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador (for some time) and even Nicaragua. The conflict has been long and violent, the commies lost support. But the governments from the right are into way too many corruption scandals, they own a lot of land and distribute a lot of tax money into their own families, so the left is gaining way too much support, those idiots don't think about politics but of some sort of revenge. And their populist representative is as corrupt as their counterparts in office, even worse as he was an ex-guerrilla member and the destitute mayor of Bogotá for not doing actually anything and messing up with the city. It's confusing speech is what has many people who seem to suffer from amnesia supporting him What's left clean of the country's political environment are the Center and Center-right parties. The rest is a bunch of chimpanzees who only use the congress to throw rocks at each other and sleep rather than to do something useful for the country. But you know, as Plato criticized democracy for most people to choice sofists, populists and clowns as leaders rather than actual politicians, philosophers and people with actual knowledge who are truly commited to that charge. For now our country is a polarised mess and advance is slow. We don't need more liberalism or left policies, we just need to end corruption and the conflict will be over.

it's very unfortunate what i happening here. many blame the media for pushing false narritives since 2015 and others blame the democratic leaders literally allowing this rioting to happen. but i blame the poorly informed people who are taught that violence is the answer. little do they know that the more damage they cause and non stop finger pointing will make trump win by a land slide victory. i can only hope less innocent people are hurt and less property damage occurs before peace is restored.
@@dankestvonmemen76288 you seem like a smart fellow, so I will share my unbiased knowledge on this song. The song itself was written to be sung in black face and was about a slave who was freed, but wants to go to the plantation because it was "great". This was actually a popular concept for propaganda used by the confederacy.
i love it! since im related to 4 confederate grandfathers thank you so much for keeping our countries' music alive! I truly hope I can become governor one day!
A timeless classic that never gets old. One of the most significant and valuable pieces of music in American history. Simply a great, great tune! And very well played, too.
This song does not make a single mention of the war, or of slavery or of racism, yet the cry-bullies are still offended by it? Goes to show that their purpose is not to be anti-racist, but anti-Southern.
I’m British and visited the south in May and gosh, what a region. The history and cultural connections to England are quite remarkable and very interesting. Britain and the US, particularly the southern states have a unique relationship and history. Let’s all work together, live together and be at peace as one people regardless of colour. Lots of love to you from London, England my southern brothers and sisters ❤️🇺🇸🇬🇧
I had several of mine and my wife's ancestors fought for the South in the Civil War. My Grandmother born in 1910 called it the War of Northern Agression and she told stories that her Grandmother told her about what they went through in New Hope Ga when the Battle of the Hell Hole landed in their Yard. The North took all of the food killed all of their live stock burned their crops Raped several women and it was Hell on Earth! The took the food from the White and the Black families! When the slaves were freed they still lived on my family's farm and they took my family's last name and stayed close like family for years. My Grandmother actually knew several of them. She agreed that Slavery was wrong and she said that her Grandparents felt the same way. But that their home was being attacked and the cruelty that they faced was beyond comprehension. I know no one wants to hear this side of the story but I am Proud to Be from Ga! Proud to be from the South! Proud of my Family that fought for the South! And Proud of my Heritage and my Race!! And I do NOT feel superior to anyone! Or hate anyone! Everyone needs to hear both sides to the story!! I love all people and I wish people would STOP trying to tear down my Heritage my History and Hate me for the color of my Skin!! I am not a Racist and if this post offended you ask yourself one question....are you a racist? If you dislike me based on the Color of my Skin or because of my Heritage things that I have no control over then my Friend it is you that is Racist! Great song!!😊👍
Thanks very much for your wonderful comment, 'Frank & Tina'. I will be sharing it with the rest of the band. I'm sure they'll be as pleased as I was to read it. It's too bad that much of the current U.S. population only has time for the 'headline' and few seem to recognize that history is complicated and/or care to explore more deeply. It could very well cost us the America we grew up in...
And the South is rising again! They are now the guarantors of the spirit of liberty, of the Constitution, of family, of men as men, women as men, of civility and Christian virtue, of God, of romance, of sanity.
I get that completely. This song was popular before the Confederacy. Northerners loved it too. Abe Lincoln loved it. My grandmother from Virginia taught us Dixie. This same woman resigned from the DAR when they refused to let Marian Anderson sing in Consitution Hall. That's how I know it's about southern pride and is how many saw it. Sad it was and is used to represent the Confederacy, civil war.
Susan Todd- What is sad, is the last sentence that you wrote. It’s a shame your Virginian grandmother didn’t educate you any better on the war and The South.
I am a born American northerner but have lived in the South most of my life. I couldn't care less to ever live in the North. The South is where my heart lives. God bless the South.

It’s a good song but what it represents because of movements after the war like the white league makes it something to be disdained, much like how the battle flag of the army of northern Virginia is a good flag but because of what people used it to represent after the war it became very much a symbol of oppression.

i think that many people often associate this song with racism due to the fact it was made for minstrel shows. some versions of the song do actually have lyrics that support abolition but the original was supposed to be for a black face performer talking about how, despite being freed, he wants to go back to the plantation

Let’s have it again!”
Edit: I made a mistake about the roots of the Dix (and I knew better).
Excellent work, George !!! One of the best depositions on the subject to date ! Something new, too ! I never heard the 2nd paragraph before. Interesting !

I got tired of seeing "traitor" when I read comments, so I actually typed up the lyrics that are in the song.

Disgusting and shameful that they're doing this during the Harvey recovery. The cowards don't want media attention.
It's a disgrace. In Nazi Germany and the USSR, all traces of those political figures who fell into disgrace were removed from all aspects of public life. Now the same mentality of intolerance and supression has spread here.
Feliberto Martinez how can you remove the statue of a historical figure from a park named after them? That's retarded.
Rewriting history and altering the past was once something that was practiced in the USSR and the Third Reich. I never thought that it would spread to the US.

For the first time, I think, the history of the civil war gives me the envy to travel to USA and I also strarts to feel linked to America as a contiuation of my dear Europe in the new world. And your band is the best band of traditional songs from the civil war, for sure !

The more you read about American history, especially in the 18th century, you will see how much it is tied up with Europe. It should be obvious, but many in Europe and America seek to divide our common history.
You are welcome, with Southern hospitality. To get the full experience, I suggest going to a small-medium sized Baptist or Presbyterian church. There will be Southern Gospel music that you should hear.✝️❤️🙂
The French Huguenots settled in North and South Carolina.
@@brianleabickerton3918 When Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes (it had been a religious tolerance edict), it unleashed a wave of persecution against the French Protestants, of which the Hugenots were the largest sect. It created a situation comparable to the Nazi persecution of the Jews, which had the effect of driving out some of their most talented people. Because of their emphasis on Bible study, they had a very high literacy rate, and were a group of professionals that included watchmakers, paper makers, glass blowers and lense makers, and a host of other modern and necessary skills needed in what was for the time a modernizing economy. Greetings from Colombia. South America
Que Colombia resuelva su propia guerra civil!
Hello from columbia south Carolina lol
I thought you would say South Carolina 🤣
My wife is Colombian from Cali. I am a from Petersburg. We dont need a national government for nothing!
It's confusing speech is what has many people who seem to suffer from amnesia supporting him
What's left clean of the country's political environment are the Center and Center-right parties.
Absolutely beautiful, keep up the southern spirit!

The entire Great Replacement conversation has been dismissed as the ridiculous hallucinations of privilaged Whites.

@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Amen! I totaly agree!
Super song and well-played/sung.
School: we are going to South Carolina as a field trip.
Girls: eww it’s so hot

Away down south in the land of traitors, rattlesnakes and alligators

I am a born American northerner but have lived in the South most of my life. I couldn't care less to ever live in the North. The South is where my heart lives. God bless the South.
As someone born and raised in the south there’s only 2 negatives no snow and high humidity so if you like the heat then there’s no better place in the Americas
No, i don't care about the politics. I only care about the soul and emotion put into this song about their homeland.
Thanks, Froot.
Sorry but this war is a political war sorry and that song is the anthem of the south
