Should you buy a vintage Lutterloh set?? My Thoughts on Old vs New Lutterloh

  • I wanted a Lutterloh set for years and recently I got one, and another on the way almost immediately after. Since I finally (after 20 years of waiting!) had a vintage AND a new set in my hand I decided to answer one question I always wondered- is it worth it to buy a vintage set? Should you just cave and get a new one??
    In the video, I mention my vintage set several times as a 70's set. It's technically a 70's to 80's combo, with some patterns from I believe 1979 to 1982. I wouldn't personally spend money on a set from the later 80's. I'd be apt to buy another earlier 70s set, since I know the patterns would be different.
    So anyway, there's my thoughts, and I started a playlist called "Maybe this is helpful?" just to put it on. :)

    I love the illustrations of older sets too, they are so diverse also with respect to the age of the ladies depicted. more inclusive! :)
    I made many clothes using vintage patterns (with my modern lutterloh system and ruler), they turn out just fine! the only thing to remember is to adjust the height of the breast ;) in the past (this applies to the very old books from the 30s until the 80s at least) they used bras that were super high and pointy, so if you like todays more relaxed underwear sometimes you may need to change the patterns a bit (especially for jackets, coats and close fitting items). This is something however that can be easily done on the paper pattern after it is traced down.

    I came across my 1974 Lutterloh system while cleaning out my closet. It makes me want to start sewing again! I just need to remember to add my seam allowances. I saw a lot of classic cuts, not just current designs.

    LOL I wanted a Lutterloh for a few years, watched Ebay, kept an Alert going on Kijiji, but didn't find anything that I would like to make, so I bought the 2022 system this past June. Not thrilled with it but learning to adapt patterns is what I've been studying.
    Last week an Alert came up on Kijiji for the 1975-1976 era for $60.00 Canadian. Bingo! I bought for my 27 year old daughter in law!
    Now we can swap patterns, as long as I lose 10 pounds or so!
    Thank you for your the Preview of the 1970s pattern and the size review. It leaves me with a big smile on my face because, I was a teenager in the 70s and I know those styles so well!

      I was a teen in the 1970s, too. Some of the clothes I wore were great. Other outfits might not have been great, ha-ha!

    I was not counting how many times you pushed up your glasses because I was pushing up my own glasses! Hahaha. I am a self-taught home sore and I'm getting back into sewing in will start sharing some of that on my channel! Very nice to meet you and I subscribed😅

    I have a 1940's German one (C 1942, complete with Kinder HY uniforms!?!), but I also have an early to mid immaculate 1950's one, complete with several all but untouched supplements. The first i paid a good few hundreds for, but the second, I paid $5 for - as they were cleaning out their mothers stash, and had NO IDEA as to the value of what they hhad! Amazing

      I have one modelbook from 1942 printed in Austria. Little cute model-book from War II time. For underwear I have the model-book of the 30th. Others with one original sewingbook and Pin and all from 60th to 90th. All from fly-market or used-books-shops.

    OMG !!! I totally understand where you are coming from with the vintage Lutterloh. I bought a new 2021 set and then I went out on eBay and bought a 1969 set as well as a 1974 set as well and you are right about the price for the vintage sets being a little more...but I love the vintage looks so much...I was looking for all the cute little shift dresses and the Mary Quant style dresses in the 60's early 70's patterns...I have my books all marked with sticky tabs too...LOL

    I will probably buy a I lived through the 70 and 80. I was born at the end of the 60s. I like some of the vintage patterns because I remember the styles from my childhood. The 80s was my teen years. I would not want to go back to 80s styles. We thought they were cool back then, but now to me they look old and dated.

    If it was me who sold it to you, you're welcome. If not, hooray for happy helpful people. And I loved your video. I have some from 50's, 70's, 80's and 90's as well as the current. I really wanted to find some cargo pants that I used to wear. Now I just need more time. I think if you have some larger measurements, the fitting garments will help act as slopers.

    I thought you were going to discuss if there was a difference in the cut and fit of different decades rather than styles. For example amount of ease or general proportions or shape due to changes in undergarments etc.

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The system is sized to your exact measurements so there shouldn't really be any difference. Since your measurements should be taken with undergarments on you can follow the patterns based on current undergarments.

    I found a 90s book for about a dollar but I hate 90s fashion. I have only made a kids tank top which came out nice. I don't see any patterns I want to make. I had never heard of Lutterloh before I found this book. I'm glad to have it but I hope someday to find a 40s-70s book. I don't have the measuring tape but I made one based on pictures of it.

      Just replied on the same sets I would like to have to the comment previously to yours. 😹
      Was a teen during late 60's-early 70's and love those styles, but always loved 40's & 50's styles, too! Don't know how much I could 'get away with' at my age but I LOVE THEM! 😱😹😹😛 💖🙌😺

    I am looking for a Lutterloh sizing scale measuring tape. Or even a download of tape measure.
    I don’t want to sign up for the whole set. Way too expensive for me, I’m an older lady. Been looking every way.

      I've heard that you can contact Lutterloh directly and order just a tape measure. :)

  • @KazM-Made
    @KazM-Made 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The earlier sets are no different in the sizing - the Scaling Tape Measure goes from 50cm up to 140 cm even for the kits from the 1940s - I have several of those. The XL/XXL kits go up to 170 cm and start from 110 cm so there's a crossover zone for both sets.

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! So it really depends on if the system has patterns you'll like. If you buy an 80s set to save money and then hate every pattern in it then it didn't really save any money.

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a set that was downloaded and it says the tape measure goes to 130 cm in the kit instructions. I don't have the actual tape measure but I know the instructions for the set say it goes to 130. So some sets don't go to 140. Unless it was a typo in the original vintage instructions.

    How much it cost?

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some very lucky people have found older systems for just a few bucks at yard sales or thrift stores, but they are usually fairly expensive and can cost even more than a brand new system. A brand new system starts at a $149 on the American Lutterloh website.

  • @sw6118
    @sw6118 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So the conclusion is that the set is exactly the same except for the number of pins…after that buy patterns from the era that you like…

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup! The biggest thing is that some people don't realize the system changes yearly, so they buy an older system thinking they're all the same and then they complain that the system is outdated because they don't even realize they got an old one. If you want current fashion buy a current system and if you tend to dress from a different era buy a used one (if you can find one and can afford it. ) Thanks for watching!

    I can not believe you spent 30 minutes discussing a set of Lutterloh. You have missed the whole essence of the patterns. The box is biodegradable there are 280 patterns in each set. You are talking gibberish-- the patterns from any set from 1970 to now are all viable and current. I know cause I have sewn over 200 Lutterloh patterns and still sewing them. The Lutterloh system is not for beginners. It is true that Lutterloh has evolved and I can tell from the comments you made you did not recognize the fashion duplicates from well-known designers. Btw there is a separate system for the plus sizes that has a blue ruler and a special book with the sizes adjusted for the plus figure.

    • @MyWorkbasket
      @MyWorkbasket  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm sorry you feel I was talking gibberish. I have heard many people talk about Lutterloh being outdated because they had no idea the patterns even update, or that they bought an outdated set. Styles absolutely change and if someone buys an 80s set for example then yes they will think the patterns are outdated because their set is. I've heard people intentionally buy an old set to save money and then complain about how outdated Lutterloh is. I am aware of the plus sized set, but cannot speak on it because I do not have it. I have another video discussing Lutterloh as a whole.

      @@DesWorld910Hi! You can actually buy just the tape by contacting the company directly, it just isn't on the website. That said my old tape and new tape are in almost the exact same condition so it does age well.
