Carole, I love it that you talk to yourself like I talk to myself when I'm working with my patterns and fabrics!😅😅😅 I should have my patterns before Christmas!
When you said there were no knits available in the 70's, I right away thought about the double-knit dresses and pantsuits that were very popular back then. Ok, this system fascinates me with the fact that you can make a pattern of your own using their -- what would you call it? -- grid. (???) Ok! Time for you to have a cup of tea and time for me to get back to my sewing room and do more straightening up back there! That's how I'm spending my Saturday!!
I know I said that about knits but I kicked myself after as I knew they must have had them but they certainly wouldn't have had the lovely lightweight jerseys we have now I'm sure. I'm sure lots of people will correct me on that 🤣. I did really enjoy mapping out the pattern and it would definitely be easier next time. The true test will be a top for my daughter as her shape is very different and isn't too Big 4 pattern friendly. Have a good day ☕️ cheers! X
Hello Carole A sewing friend and myself years ago had purchased the sure fit designs system It has a master pattern for pants, blouses t-shirts dresses but you customize it with your measurements and a special ruler It was fairly easy but I am a big 4 pattern person and like you they fit me fairly easily very few tweaks So I let them do the work This is very interesting So many are sewing vintage patterns there are lots when you look at them that are quite in style right now Looking forward to seeing the next steps Take care and happy sewing 🧵 🪡 God bless you
Oh I had heard of the Sure fit system from Joy's channel? Like you I just love the big 4 and they fit me easily like you but they don't work as well for my daughter. I am hoping I can crack this system mainly to make for her. I love looking through those vintage patterns and as you say, you could get away with a lot of those now. Thanks so much for watching it. 😊
Hi Izzy. Thanks so much. It is quite fun to do and I'm sure I would be less 'amateurish' next time🤣. Glad you enjoyed it anyway. Now to work out how to make it up! 🇬🇧💕
What an interesting concept! I had never heard of it before you talked about it, even though I lived in England from 1970 to 1976 and was an avid sewist. I remember some sewing & knitting subscription I had that came with a binder and maybe monthly issues of booklets to collect. I am so anxious to see how it comes out.
Hi Kathy. It is an intriguing concept isn't it and was amazed when mapping out those dots meant a pattern piece! I'm not sure where my Mum obtained it, I'm guessing from an advert in a newspaper perhaps? I'll have to ask my Mum if she had binder and booklets you collected. The amazing thing is you can still buy it and it is still expensive! Thanks for watching and supporting my bumpy journey 😊
This is really fascinating. I wondered how you were going to re-create the pattern pieces. It's a very clever ruler. Yes...I'd say you are matching A with A, B with B, etc.
Hi Diane. I will admit it was quite fun as I love doing puzzles! I'd be far better next time I'm sure. Silly me of course A was with A 🤣. Honestly!! Thanks and have a good weekend 😊
Well you got thru the initial steps. I wanted to reach out and tell you about the cross just sitting on the diagram, that, yes it does go with the small piece. As for the A,B markings, I really think you match up the A's together, not A to B. Looking forward to how you proceed.
Hi Kathleen yes step one complete! It is good fun actually and once I got going I could work it out. Glad I worked out the small bit 🤣. Silly me yes of course A meets A on the shoulder bit etc. 🤪. Looking forward to making it up now. Thanks 😊
I have to say I did really enjoy mapping out the pieces. It would be a lot easier a second time. Looking forward to actually making it up now. Thanks for watching. 😊
This is by far one of the most interesting methods I’ve ever seen….fascinating. Glad you’re doing videos on this. At first I thought…hmmm not anything I’ll do anytime, but just, found this interesting. Thanks Carole. Now I need to watch the videos I’ve missed.
It really is an almost magical system and I love plotting those dots and coming up with a pattern at the end! I will say though as you will see in my other videos it takes some working out and I have had mixed results. It is fun to do every now and again and I just did that collab with Kris from Sew Notes, now that was fun! Thanks for watching 😊🧵
Thanks for watching and bearing with me on my first episode! I'm sure I will find it easier with the next pattern 🤞🏼. I have to admit, it was fun though. Now to work out how to put it together without instructions!!
Whew 😥 I think I’m ready for a cup of tea as well ☕️ it’s not boring (to me) at all. On the contrary, quite fascinating. I think I would have ironed my pattern paper, afraid that some of the bumps and folds would skew my markings. After I finish a garment and fold all the pattern pieces together I give it a quick press with the iron to fit more easily into the envelope 🤦♀️ might just be my ocd! What a fun journey, look forward to our next classroom time 🙌 That looks like an identical set of electronic drums behind you 😱 that my husband has, in addition to the acoustic set he’s had for 40+ years!
Oh I knew someone would comment on that paper but I was so excited to get going 🤣. I normally do exactly the same as you as iron everything and like you say especially to get the pieces back in the envelope. I'll promise to do it next time 😁. My husband also has two proper drum kits and also a cahon. I can't believe your husband may have the same! My Grandsons love it 👶🏻👶🏻🥁. I really did enjoy doing the plotting actually and looking forward to doing another. Thanks for your interest 😊
@@socarole66 Not frustrating at all, Carole! I’ve always loved puzzles and mysteries. This is a new, intriguing one for me. Unfortunately, it also gives me powerful urges to buy MORE STUFF! 😱😂
Aargh! I'm going to work out of town this week, I sure hope I can cast TH-cam to the hotel TV! It looks like you got a good start. One of the videos I watched gave instructions for adjusting for short and long waists. Now I'm getting fired up to try, too. I looked more closely and found my set is from 1987. WOW. It's a sea of grown on sleeves and massive shoulder pads. I might have to look for a supplement or two, not sure if I'm up for trying to start such a throwback trend. :-)
Hi there. Oh that made me laugh! Don't worry, I'm not rushing into doing another video until the weekend as so many other sewing projects going on😅, plus we actually have a heatwave in the UK this week so I'm making the most of it 😎. I can't believe you have a set from the 80's, lots of Princess Diana inspired clothing I imagine 😂. The supplements are available from Lutterloh and aren't too pricey at all. It is good fun I must admit and I would be much better next time. I now have to work out how to make it without instructions 🤣. Have a good week!
I see you’ve learned we did indeed have knits, but not just ugly double knits, beautifully soft cotton interlock and a gorgeous rayon ponte. I still have some of the ponte, and made some very comfy pajamas out of the interlock. I have only been able to find a similar cotton interlock once, it’s greatly thinned down now. This system looks fun!
I was so silly to have said that about knits as of course we would have had them and I regretted it as I said it. I was just amazed that the effort it would have taken to knit up the pattern price shapes! That is amazing that you still have some of that fabric and use it. It is an interesting way to create patterns and would have saved the ladies of the past a huge amount of money. Thanks so much for watching. 😊
Yep you are right! It's another version I made a few years ago. If it works then make it !! Looking forward to seeing if I can make something without instructions which is very brave for me 🤣. It's hot hot hot here today and I've spent most of it in the sea 👙🌊
Hello Jane. Thank you, as you can see, I am no professional and had never done it before 🤣. I will hopefully put up part 2 this evening so hope you will enjoy that. Thanks again and have a good weekend. 😊
🤣🤣 It was fun I promise you despite how stressed I looked 😆. Yeah, the big four are still my definite go to 😉. Next step, work out how to construct it 🤞🏼 have a great weekend
Oh wow fascinating how you make a pattern using the measuring tape and diagrams 🥰 look forward to seeing the sewing it up as I have in the past ( and lately 🙄) think I know how to sew it up but come to a part where I sewed something up to soon so run into problems with not getting a neat corner ( if that make sense)
If it works, it's a very clever concept and has been sold for years! There are lots of people on TH-cam that have made many things successfully. I'm such a follow the instructions kind of gal I can imagine doing the same as you and just charging ahead. Thanks for your support. 😊
I'm excited to follow along on your journey. I actually picked up 2 of these systems in thrift stores for almost nothing. The first one was missing the tape measure so it was rather useless. However, the second kit was complete and since the 2 kits were from different years, they have completely different patterns. I've never used them so I eagerly await your thoughts and experiences with this.
Hello Mary. Well you had not one but two lucky finds! You aren't the first though that has found one of these kits in a charity shop and they are still on sale today at a high cost! As you say, it's the tape that is basically the magic bit. How fabulous that you have different sets so you have a lot of patterns to choose from. I'm learning more and more as I do this but I am enjoying it! Thanks for watching.
Hi Carole I am very excited I have made clothes in the past but when I was pregnant and when the children were small and I’m ok with trousers and skirts, however this is speeding it’s way I invested into it when friends said they wishes they could make tops to fit them properly. I have just subscribed so I don’t miss a moment thankyou
Hi Wendy, thank you for finding me and my channel. I am very excited for you as you start your journey. As you can see this video was a while ago and I have made a few things since. I'm getting better I will admit and I do love plotting it all out. As long as you have a basic knowledge of sewing which you obviously do I think you will be fine and there are so many patterns to choose from. Looking forward to hearing how you get on. 😊🧵
Hello Deirdre! Oh my word I couldn't believe it when she told me she had bumped into you. My children must have made an impression on you if you still recognise them! Katie told me a little bit about your sewing bee and I would love to know more. Thank you so much for finding my little channel 😊🌸
@@socarole66 it was a delight to see Katie and her babies🥰. Even it makes me feel old! Katie and Steven will always remain in my memory as two of the most delightful students I ever had the pleasure of teaching. It’s just so lovely to see them all grown up. Sounds like you are having as much fun as I with sewing😁. The best part of retirement is actually having the time and space to keep the machines all fired up and ready to go. The fabric stash is another hobby obviously 🙄. Happy Stitching and hopefully we will catch up someday soon. Xx
Hi Allison, if you have the system I should definitely give it a go but choose something simple to start with to get the hang of plotting the pieces etc. Good luck and let me know how you get on, there are so few people using the system out there! Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you Sharon. I made a huge error saying that knitted fabric wasn't around in the 70's. 😱. What I meant to say was fabric like our fine viscose jerseys weren't available and nor was Lycra. How I wished I had edited that part of the video 🤣. Thanks so much for watching. 😊
Thank you so much, try and find my other videos if you can and I will be putting another out the beginning of this week. It definitely is an intriguing system!! 😊
Hoorah🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 it arrived finally after a the third delivery company. So Carole I will be going through all you have. I’ve watched most but have now saved them es it comes with the plastic ruler and a card one. There is a section called Practical Hints. I think it’s been modified. Next week I’m going to sztart. One of the girl’s has COVID. Se y ousoon xxxx🎉🎉🎉🎉
YES !!!!! That is great news, I still haven't got around to doing any more Lutterloh and I really must before I forget how to do it! Please let me know how you get on and the most important thing that people kept reminding me (and I forgot!) is to add the seam allowance of your choice in the right places! Sorry to hear your family has Covid, hope it is one of the mild variants and she gets over it quickly. Have a good weekend 😊🧵
Hi there! Yes I imagine it was perfect for children as you didn't have to keep buying bigger patterns. My Mum was so proud she made me a coat when I was 10 but sadly no photos of it and the pattern is missing. Sounds like you were a pro at it! Thanks for watching. 📏✂️🧵
There were definitely knits in the 70s. My grandma made several pieces of clothing and then made quilts with the scraps. They were not as fine as today’s knits to be sure; in fact I thought they were quite ugly.
I made such a mistake saying that about knits but when I am chatting in front of a camera I ramble on sometimes 🤣. Wish I had edited it out! Of course they had knits but they certainly didn't have Lycra and as you say the fine ones we have now. Thanks for watching. 😊
Hahaha. I remember making maternity pants out of an ugly green polyester knit in 1969. The printed top was really pretty, though. My first make with knits! I doubt that I knew about stretch needles or stretch stitches back then. I can’t remember details, but I remember that outfit. 🤣 I was wearing it in a newspaper picture. Bell bottom pants, no less.
I have this system and use it now and then, but have to remember that I have to change where I insert the pin in the tape measure for all the lines that make up the waistline and below.
Hello there. Interesting to know you have used the system. I'm thinking of marking the hip measurements on the pattern in highlighter so I won't forget next time!! Thanks so much for following my journey. 😊
I am so happy for Google because this system is metric...and my American self is used to the good ole' Imperial system. Why we hold on to inches, cups, miles and such is probably born out of stubbornness and foolish pride. When I was working I used metric measurement some. I'm not totally lost. I can also read the metric measuring tape, so I am half way there .Woo hoo! I am planning on buying this system because from what I have seen it looks like a lot of fun. It seems to have a lot of options and all.
I really hadn't thought of the fact the whole system uses metric, it is German so that would account for it. We are a funny breed in the Uk we use inches and feet for somethings, miles and not metres yet measure mostly in centimetres, we are odd! This system seems to work well but having a good knowledge of sewing is essential, hence I choose simple patterns! Good luck and thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment 😊📏✂️🧵
Thank you! Yes silly me, I realised that after I had done the video but what we didn't have was the wonderful viscose, bamboo, modal jerseys like we have now! Thanks for taking the time to comment 🤭
Could you Please do a sew along, showing how to properly put the pieces together ? I can’t find this any where ! You would help so many new to sewing the Golden Rule.. Please
Hi Gena, I am hoping to getting around to make another Lutterloh video in the next couple of weeks but I have done several more after this one. If you go onto my channel there should be a list of them under the Lutterloh playlist. I am going to revisit a more basic item again and explain better what I am doing now I am a little wiser! Thanks so much for finding me and watching 🧵
This is so interesting! You have given us a very nice video , Carol. Is your mother still living? We live in technology and fancy fibers, the past was about good fit and ingenuity.
Hi Kathy. Yes thankfully my Mum is still alive and In her mid eighties. At first she didn't want me to bring attention to this as she just feels incredibly guilty for not making use of it which is why I am so happy to be giving it a try. It must have saved the ladies of past lots of money. Patterns for Pennies it was advertised as. It's incredible to think you can still buy it! Thanks so much for watching.
Hi Janet. Immediately I thought no they don't, you are right and surprised no one else hadn't mentioned that but actually! I have half made the top and it isn't big at all 🤔. That does make me wonder. Thank you so much for spotting that.
Something to check into….. you added seam allowances to the center front and back but since it’s on the fold, I would think it’s not necessary. I’m so anxious to see how this works as I’ve had the kit for decades and haven’t tried it!
Hello Deborah, thank you so much for pointing that out, someone else had mentioned it and I can't believe I was that silly to add it there 🤣. I should know much better than that but I think I was panicking I would forget to do it! It didn't work out too big in the end luckily. I will be putting a video out hopefully tomorrow. Would you believe I was looking at a sewing magazine this afternoon and it was advertised in it 😆. Thanks again
Hi there. When you say the original Lutterloh rulers do you mean the tape measure? If so I do use that but if you mean the French curve, well I don't use it as it is 50 years old and a bit worse for wear! Thanks for your comment.
@@beajannis2968 thank you. I have made other things since this video and you should be able to find them online. 2 tops a dress and some trousers about a month ago. All seems to be going well. Thank you so much for your help.
Hi Charlotte, I have never heard of the American Way. I have enjoyed making a few pieces now and the best part for me is the plotting as long as I concentrate! Hope you have enjoyed watching my journey. Thanks for taking the time to comment 😊
Hi there, really cute Video. Is there anyway we could See you Sew It together ? I am a new wanna~B garment Sewest, People like myself, Love this Lutterhol System... I know I'm getting this 2022 edition for Christmas, but not sure I can sew it without a Vloger, showing us how. ♡
Hi Gena. I have done a few videos since this one of mapping it out and trying to work out construction. It isn't a tutorial more of a 'learn with me' process! There are a few proper tutorials on TH-cam if that's what you are after. I plan to make more things in 2023 as it is a fun system to use. If you have time, watch the other videos I did. Thanks so much for finding me and good luck!
Thank you yes I do now! That was me being a real beginner when I made this video. Since then I use a roll of pattern paper completely uncreased 🤣. You aren't the first person to comment on that ! When I use printed patterns I always iron the pieces first before I cut them out so I have no idea why I didn't when I made this. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your reply Carole. Your video was very helpful. I've had this system for some years but have never ventured to use it. Would you say that these are just blocks, and that you need to alter them to fit ime. For a full bust adjustment, and apex width etc. As I normally have to do this on commercial patterns. Thanks Val.
@@valeriepoole1535 now this is the burning question. Lutterloh say you only need 2 measurements for a perfect fit. I am on a Lutterloh Facebook forum (which is amazing) and a lot of people have to do FBAs etc. This is not a block system like the Surefit system, you create patterns from supplements and they issue new ones every 4 months. If you go onto the Facebook site there are so many helpful tips on there and also a test pattern you can do to see how it fits you. Hope that helps!

Xx
I have had this system for a few years and never used it but now seeing this video I think I will give it a try
Hi Allison, if you have the system I should definitely give it a go but choose something simple to start with to get the hang of plotting the pieces etc. Good luck and let me know how you get on, there are so few people using the system out there! Thanks for watching 😁
I remember having skirts made from something like ponte roma and there was tee shirt fabric in the 70’s
I'm enjoying this! :) I'm very interested in this.
Oh thank you Sherri. I did enjoy plotting it all out I must admit! X
This is so interesting, glad I found your channel
I need to get my book out. See if I remember correctly. Lol
I works great. I made a lot clothing for my children and myself. So easy for growing kids.
@@socarole66 I do the same thing. It’s hard to multitask, especially in front of the camera.
Oh, Carole! Knit fabrics were definitely available in the 1970's! Crypoleen (misspelt!) was used for everything!
Hi. I knew someone would correct me! Thanks for being the first 🤣.
Very neat! But exhausting! I’m curious if the fit will turn out perfectly and make it all worthwhile.
Hi Lisa, it was fun honestly and second time round it will make so much more sense I'm sure. I can't wait to make it up now. Thanks. 😁
We had some knit fabrics in the ' 70's.
@@socarole66 Thank you so Much Carole 💗
Great tip on photocopying !
Thank you, it just saves the original patterns from becoming 'holey' Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Well done ,you are off to a great start,,I was talking to you for a bit but you got it..lol
I heard you Pamela!! It really was a work it out as I went along kind of video 🤣. Now for the fabric choosing and sewing up! Thanks for watching 😊
Centre back and centre front don't require seam allowance if fabric on fold
Hi Janet. Immediately I thought no they don't, you are right and surprised no one else hadn't mentioned that but actually! I have half made the top and it isn't big at all 🤔. That does make me wonder. Thank you so much for spotting that.
@@socarole66 It's probably because it's gathered below shoulders, so yours gathering in excess fabric
They had double knits only. They were very stable and not at all like the stretch we have now.
As you say they did have some knitted fabric but no where near the choice and texture of the fabric now 😍. Thank goodness eh?!
You have to use the original Lutterloh rulers for a good fit.
Hi there. When you say the original Lutterloh rulers do you mean the tape measure? If so I do use that but if you mean the French curve, well I don't use it as it is 50 years old and a bit worse for wear! Thanks for your comment.
You can find on You Tube some videos how to use them.
@@beajannis2968 thank you. I have made other things since this video and you should be able to find them online. 2 tops a dress and some trousers about a month ago. All seems to be going well. Thank you so much for your help.
I have one called the American Way I've never used either.
Would you iron your paper first 😊
Thank you yes I do now!
