    Change compensator, replace auto tension with manual one

    Aftermarket exhaust systems check for loose nuts or bolts. Happened to me, it is so gradual. I would hear a rattle over bumps it got louder. Too late lost both muffler fastening nuts, it took out front header stud fastener. I have to pull front cylinder head & drill out broken stud.

    Stock compensators suck, they are week and cause the chain to over tightened, had the same chain slap, man of war compensator and manual adjuster fixed it right up

  • @PotatoeJoe69
    @PotatoeJoe69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have a 2020 Softail Standard. Occasionally my primary gets noisy when it's hot as hell, and I've figured out that it's the chain tensioner not always working when it should, so I get the chain slapping around and making extra noise. As far as I can tell it's not actually causing any excess wear, not really much metal on the drain plug (not anymore than usual) and no visual damage on the compensator. So although it is extremely fucking annoying and sound like my engine is about to grenade, I'm not all that worried.

    I had a loud howling sound a few days ago while coasting to stop signs with the clutch pulled in. It sounded like a dry bushing howl and it was probably coming from the primary. The fluid level is ok, but looks old. There was no howling sound today. When your compensator was loose was the dry bearing sound constant or intermittent?

    • @motorcycleryder9489
      @motorcycleryder9489  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mine was constant and it sounded like a spun connecting rod bearing. It had the same low-end knock that a spun bearing causes. Clutch position did not change my compensator noise and it followed engine rpm when raised or lowered. Good luck!

  • @timothyweiss619
    @timothyweiss619 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Since you had the cover off already you should have changed the compensater ( non HD). Also the tensioner to a Hayden way better than HD. Take Care

    Do you have aftermarket cams? I put in some Woods 222 cams in my 17 Street Bob and now have a knocking noise coming the compensator. I was told I need to put in an aftermarket Compensator because of increased torque, etc.
    This motor is equipped with a more heavy duty Comp. Also told you should be able to tune out this noise. What is correct???

  • @randymccalla9995
    @randymccalla9995 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should replace the tensioner, with the later models, no spacers and better material on the shoe..

    @davidfellows6250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    yeah everybody dogs on the automatic tensioner but ive got 60k on my 2014 , i chech it everyother time i change the oil and its always in spec. i had a bad experience with a well know and trusted primary fluid. it made it sound like the primary was going to grenade, i changed that and put 20/50 backvin and the noise was gone.

    • @gregr1672
      @gregr1672 ปีที่แล้ว

      What Primary fluid gave you the issue? I used to run HD Primary \Fluid Trans Fluid . Don't think they make it anymore .So I ve been running Lucas 20w50 supposed o be for all 3 holes . I have a knock at low idle cold ,chain is adjusted & compensator tight .Wondering about fluid now

    • @davidfellows6250
      @davidfellows6250 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregr1672 i use Amsoil but it was their trans fluid that didnt work for me. I put Amsoil 20/50 backvin and it fixed the issue. the gear oil is great.

  • @nhrider88
    @nhrider88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You never showed chain tension before removing the tensioner. The stock automatic tensioner cause the chain to run tight because it never backs off.

    • @motorcycleryder9489
      @motorcycleryder9489  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I measured it off camera before removing the tensioner. It was a little on the lose side and once it ratcheted to the next tighter position the noise I was chasing disappeared.

  • @brading84

    Hey man I got some questions, what kind of sounds were you having, I have a 16 road glide ultra and I’m having what sounds like rocks in there

    • @motorcycleryder9489
      @motorcycleryder9489  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine was making a faint and occasional chain slap noise when cold. If you are getting rock sounds I would first check your fluid level, type and condition. Then I would check the condition of your chain, tensioner, compensator and bearings. Good luck!

    • @samuelmontgomery3882
      @samuelmontgomery3882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sound of rocks clanging in a coffee can usually means a loose compensator nut. Not a big deal as long as you get it fixed A.S.P.

    • @motorcycleryder9489
      @motorcycleryder9489  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samuelmontgomery3882 It definitely could be a loose nut. When mine backed of on my 2003 Road King it sounded like a spun bearing.

    • @motorcycleryder9489
      @motorcycleryder9489  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it's almost impossible to diagnose without actually seeing the bike and hearing the noise. If I was you, I would try to isolate the exact conditions that cause the noise. Exact temperature that it starts at, is it at idle while parked, does it do it under load, does it stop when you are riding and pull the clutch in, does it follow engine rpm or road speed, etc. The more you eliminate by diagnosis the better your chances of finding the problem. Good luck, hope you find the issue!

    How do you replace the stator with these style primary?

    • @JoeSykes94
      @JoeSykes94 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to take the inner primary cover off to replace the stator.

    • @michaelshearer4564
      @michaelshearer4564 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pull off the compensator, clutch, and chain as one assembly. Remove all bolts from inner primary to the engine case and all bolts from the inner primary to the transmission. Pull off the inner primary and then you will have access to the stator. Stator removed is pretty much self explanatory at this point. Hope this helps.

    Compensators are junk even the screamin eagle one. Install a Man O War black horse compensator it’s far superior than harley junk.
    And it’s early serviceable on the bike.

    If you're going to post a how to video on TH-cam, at least have the decency to do your video in landscape instead of portrait format. Otherwise, you don't maintain much credibility for intelligence.
