  • I found another source of primary noise that I think I could hear from time to time going down the road. Being inside the primary, it's hard to diagnose exactly what is making one of several noise possibilities.

    I have owned 4 Kawasaki 1300 inline 6 cylinder motorcycles. Even with the inherently smooth running inline 6 the clutch baskets rattled pretty badly on all of them. The one was so bad that I convinced my Dad's Harley riding buddy that it was a diesel. I reember him being amazed that it did not smoke. Than he noticed the spark plugs. My 85 flhtc with 50,000 miles is very quiet as long as the primary chain is adjusted. It seems that the manual primary adjuster is the way to go.

      hey Mark, Dan Bowling here,I had to replace my stator on my 13 Roadglide. when I took it apart I couldn't believe the locomotive style engineering. It rattled alotand being the gear head I set out to find out why. Finally I noticed the wear on the compensator bearing that it rides on. the compensator I'd was brindled a little but not damaged badly. the bearing original OD was easily measured and was a bad fit. way to much clearance. I went to the dealer and picked up a new pc. with thrust washer and Mic's a few to get a better clearance fit. I T's much quieter but still lacks proper lubrication to the thrust washer. I believe that is also a problem with slop as its plastic thickness gets thinner. the part is 28 bucks

      @@contact4mwy7 I picked up a 2005 Harley Road King this year from a family estate. It is a gorgeous bike, but it is a rebuild/salvage title bike and was completely disassembled and restored piece by piece, as it was a Hurricane Katrina flood bike. So unfortunately the guy who did the work on it and knew everything is now gone. So every little noise freaks me out. I am taking it apart right now to install These rocker locker inserts, hoping to hell that solves this terrible clackety sound im hearing on the top of the front cylinder

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I have and know that sound very well. My bike is an '09, so for you the compensator may not be an issue on that year. But, the cam chain tensioner shoes will need to be checked at some point. Search out "worn cam chain tensioner harley davidson". The plastic shoes disintegrate over time and miles and send plastic boys through the engine if not caught in time. Metal from the support arms can also shred off and contaminate the engine causing a complete tear down and rebuild, replacing damaged parts. All in all they are a good machine and fun to ride, but be aware of their maintenance needs and life is much better!

    • @rrmorris67
      @rrmorris67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@contact4mwy7 Yeah....I'm aware of the tensioner thing on the 88s. I hope to hell when the bike was rebuilt he knew about it and got good ones. I do know he sent out the motor to be completely restored. But I have no idea! The good news is the bike only has 2,500 miles on it. Yes! I know, but it's true. He went through all this time and expense to rebuild it, and even did some upgrades, like a 6 speed tranny....But I think he realized after he got it all done that he had grown too old and the bike was too difficult for him to handle so he never rode it.

      @@contact4mwy7 I actually saw a video recently where this guy had totally torn into a motor. And he shows how the little screws that hold in the air box on a twin cam had worked their way loose and ALL THREE of them got sucked into the cylinders and virtually destroyed the cylinders. Seriously? That's the cost on a Harley of not using enough loctite or torquing a fastener? Complete destruction? How the hell can I ever take this bike on a long trip with confidence????

    Mark I know Its been a while since you did this video, I just wanted to add the observation that as I was looking at around one minute and 44 seconds into the viewing, that what I thought was that noise was not the clutch tabs, but the chain roller behind your finger tapping into the gear space. • @contact4mwy7

      I have not yet. Is this something that didn't used to be there and now is? Have you compared it to other bikes to see if they are as loud? There is a bearing cage there that is oiled by the primary oil inside through a hole so the oil drips down into it.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The compensator will make a bit of noise that can also sound like whirring, which as long as the bike starts up with no issue or clanging just means it's working to smooth out the pulses of the cylinders before they get to the clutch.

    You're probably the most posted compensator guy on youtube, I've watched most of your videos. In the end what set-up did you chose? modified, stock, SE, Baker etc? I just dumped $1200 in Bakers comp, adjuster, HD's rotor cover and a complete all balls starter after killing my THIRD starter clutch pack and being TOWED HOME.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with a SE compensator, but not the newest model that utilizes a plastic funnel to dump lube into tiny ports near the bolt of the compensator. Either model is more rugged than the stock one these bikes came with. I have yet to find there is a lube issue, which there may very well be, but rather a spring pack wearing out issue. That being said, I added one more medium sized spring washer to the pack to give it a bit more strength than stock. This is my second year running this setup and hot starting the bike is still not a problem, and the engine pulses are not thrashing the drive line like a solid comp sprocket. It still has enough "suspension" to work with. I am still curious about the Baker models as I have not had one to look over. Let me know what you think of it. Thanks!

      @@contact4mwy7 hi mark thanks soo much for fast reply , didnt expect it this fast ! I took primary cover , clutch basket , primary chain out when the bike was warm earlier and jiggle the belt pulley and that small knocking noise it does sound like come from the transmission pulley , got home from work earlier & bike is cold , there is no noise at all. I will remove inner primary case tomorrow & inspect further see if there is any movement on that transmission pulley. Thanks for your video mate , ive learnt a lots ! 🙏🏼

      @@awedihdaira2786 there is a bearing that holds the main transmission shaft in place. The clutch and belt pulley are mounted to that shaft. Try to see if you can detect any wear of the bearing or the race sleeve that they are supposed to roll against. Did you check for tightness of the primary chain when you took the outer primary off?

      @@contact4mwy7 yes i did check the primary chain before i took them off , my bike using one of those automatic chain adjuster. I really hope the problem is not the transmission pulley bearing because i dont think im capable enough to replacing that 🙈 i will have a look tomorrow , thanks again mark 🙏🏼

      I haven't found a way to eliminate this noise, it is associated with how much free play is in the construction.

      My take would be that it may be due to different tolerances of the parts when manufactured, or wear of these parts from mileage?

    Harleys make noise. Wear ear plugs and buy loud exhaust pipes that cures the noise. I'm guessing none of you newbies have ever riden or listened to a Pamhead. When it breaks fix it,till then spend the money saved at the local watering hole.
