    I bought my FXDLS brand new back in 2017. I brought it in for its 1000-mile checkup, and on the way home from the dealership I heard this loud clunking in the primary. Sure enough the SE compensator had failed with just over 1000 miles on the bike. Luckily the bike was under warranty, so Harley had to fix it for free. But here we are six years later and I'm hearing a clunk in the primary on shutdown. I will definitely be going with the Dark Horse comp eliminator. Such a simple yet great design, and I hear nothing but good things about them.

    DarkHorse - first thing I did on my 2014 FLHTK when purchased 4yrs ago & again on my 2015 FLHR last year - other than a little chain slop on the FLHR a few months later (at install paid for upgraded tensioner/didn't get it) put in a new Hayden M6 and all is running well. If you shop around, can find a DarkHorse for $425 shipped. Best selling point for me is it's less than $50 to rebuild when the time comes down the road!

    They replaced mine on my 2013 bagger a few years ago. Was under extended warranty. I never noticed any difference before or after. Maybe a bit of a rattle but not very noticeable . It's just that when cold started, idles a bit higher and you feel more stress when putting it in gear. Good info on what to use if it fails. Also, probably why last bike, 06 bagger with 95 ci stage 3 big bore kit had issues. Later on, would backfire loudly when first started. I'm glad my 13 is upgraded after hearing this.

    Installed the Dark Horse on a friends 96 along with a manual tensioner. He said he loves it. Make sure you order a stator cover if your bike has the older style. That’s another $100 or so if I remember correct. I had to ever so slightly grind away a bit on the inside of the case to get the cover for the stator out, but I don’t think it’s that way on all of them. It has to pull straight out with the clutch pack and primary chain all together. They definitely appear and feel heavy duty.

    I replaced my comp with another stock type from V-Twin Manufacturing . The spring broke in the OE. It's not a big deal to replace yourself, and you don't have to spend 600 bucks on one. The stock type is just fine, and I wouldn't trust rubber comps any farther then I can throw them. The best thing anyone can do, is install a Hydraulic tensioner like a Hayden or V-Twin Manufacturing 18-0120 (which I use). Running no comp can possibly wear our your trans if you have a 6 speed.

      There's nothing wrong with adjustable pushrods unless you're getting beyond bolt in cams with heavy valve springs and very high lift cams. That's where you want to start considering some solid push rods since you'll have the heads off anyhow for springs. 2008 electra glide classic. I run it stock, aside from true duals and an intake. I went for a solid sprocket. Eliminate the problem. I don't run it hard, it's got over 60k anyway. The only thing I've noticed is that I have to ride differently. I usually keep it above 2200rpm when riding thru slower areas or when I get behind a cage that doesn't know how to drive. Anything less, you will feel every firing of those cylinders and it shakes like an earthquake. If I was going to put any kind of power upgrades into it, I'd definitely not have gone with a solid sprocket, but maybe the man o war.

      I have to agree! That's a nice setup and you can rebuild it as needed, the rebuild kit is a lot cheaper than a compensator replacement.

    I installed a compensator eliminator on my 2014 Electra Glide Police. I use it for funeral escort work so it gets a lot of miles weekly. It is a bit noisy. And, it vibrates at slow rpm. The sprocket is much lighter than the compensator, so the engine seems to rev guicker.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 96 is a good motor, it's the same architecture as the 103, just got a bad reputation out of the factory for running hot. Which it did with the factory tuning, you get a flash tune on it and they are good to go. Compensators were a hit and miss issue on those engines.

    I just had an epiphany why compensators are used on HDs. 45° is not a great angle for an engine as cool as they sound. The 120° lobes of the compensator try to get the engine closer to 90° twin power pulses to the rest of the powertrain which are much less harmful and easy for it to deal with. Not perfect either. All V twins are trying to eat themselves like an old steam locomotive!

    Sir, what causes a loud clunk when shutting down an engine? I have a high compression, built to 113 ci, Harley Springer. I changed to a new OEM compensator, but that did not fix the problem. It is an intermittent problem. I adjusted the chain by adjusting at the clutch basket and cable adjuster. People are telling me it is caused by the engine, which may be in the middle of a stroke when shut down. What say you?

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With high compression and without hearing it myself I would towards it's in the engine when you shut it down it's still going to rotate and come to a stop. You to take the fire out of it while it's rotating during shut down it might build compression and kick back since it doesn't have another bang to rotate it over.

  • @mikespencer9913
    @mikespencer9913 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn’t read every last comment so this may have already been brought up, but the idea that just eliminating the compensator is a viable option seems a little bewildering to me. Why does the compensator fail? Too many/major ‘shocks’ from the engine side. OK , let’s just eliminate the “shock absorber”!
    My mostly stock 2011 Softail has just over 40K and seems fine so far (orig owner). At some point I may upgrade it and will most likely go with the Dark Horse.

    On my 2007 Fatboy, I did a compensator elimination using an Evolution Industries Compensator Elimination Kit. I can't tell any difference in riding, acceleration, or deceleration. I do know when I am in the wrong gear for the speed I am traveling. I must use a lower gear for the slower speeds. I get a clunking sound from the primary. Most notable is taking off from a stop in 2nd gear, as it will be loud clunking, as if something came apart inside the primary, but if I down shift to 1st gear the noise stops. Overall I am happy with the compensator elimination kit.
