  • Twin Cam Harley Davidson’s are the brands leading workhorse, being such they incur plenty of wear, tear, are overworked and underfed. inspecting, checking and replacing these parts will guaranteed keep you going longer than the rest of the HOG pen
Cam Tensioners are going to be the Most Important, as this is the heart of the bike, this is a big part why the twin cam gets such a bad wrap but if you maintain doing your maintenance it should be no issue
1999-2006 Twin Cam Tensioners - Check and Replace shoes at least every 10,000, The little plastic particulates like to drop off in chunks causing plastic bits in the oil pump if not addressed which lead to a whole host of failures.
You can replace the shoes to get by, but it's only right to do the full tensioners every 25k-30k miles and if you’ve never touched it, the previous owner didn’t either, and if you’re already in there you might as well replace primary shoe, gasket, Primary and Cam cover hardware and Primary, derby cover gasket, check the primary tensioner and check chains for excessive slack.

make sure the cam plate isn't bowed which is common with the sandcast oem plates when your just replacing shoes, and even you're on a budget it’s probably wise to check your oil pump gear rotors for wear and have one on standby for replacement and most likely it will be worn from its entire life riding on the out of true crankshaft, better to replace a 150 oil pump than pay for a 250 tow to do the same thing all over again.

You must check crankshaft runout before making any cam or performance choices. Also keep in mind before you install any performance products as a installer this is your responsibility to calculate and check
Coil bind, Valve to valve clearance, and valve to piston clearance with the Grind, open, close, duration/s, valve lift, lift @ TDC
So that way you don't have a piston kiss your valve and then that's all she wrote.
    www.feulingpar... Runout gauge
    www.jpcycles.c...
Chain drives also give much more leeway of crankshaft runout, this is the biggest factor when choosing chain or gear drive setup your crankshaft must have less than .003 Thousandths runout on crankshaft axis, .012 thousandths is Harley’s serviceable limit for Crankshaft altogether, So before you think big cam you might be thinking big bottom end and built heads. Darkhorse crankworks are the best, if you're not going to replace your main crank bearing and have your crank trued, don't want excessive gear drive sound, chain drive is the way to go.
If you really care for your bike or your customer wants a bulletproof upgraded setup you can install or build your own Hydraulic Conversion kit. Which in short means You can Convert 1999-2006 Spring tensioners to hydraulic with Screaming Eagle conversion cam plate/oil pump and Andrews conversion cam combo or Fueling kits are popular because of their price point and inclusivity of all the parts required.

Please remember Whenever you replace cams, always swap inner cam bearings, even as a safety measure it would be wise, you absolutely don’t want one of these little rollers to seize up, to then seize your new entire cam chest

When I sold my Sportster and got a Dyna TC 96, all hell broke loose regarding reliability. Replaced my Dyna with a Road King Screaming Eagle big bore. Most unreliable bike I have ever owned. That was a money pit. Finally went for a Triumph T120 Bonneville and starting to enjoy motorcycles again. Still miss that Sportster. It was as reliable as the Bonnie. Sometimes I think of getting an M8 but the HD is charging an arm and a leg for them. Can't really afford one. And with the new set of issues that the M8 are suffering from, i think will keep the Bonneville for some time.

@@atomicgrasshopper4391 sold my sporty for a Vic, I work for a parts store that sells almost 😅 exclusively Harley parts. With all the issues I see with the new M8’s and Dealer spats and fighting over warranty issues my only motorcycle will be a Indian even after they screwed victory. I’ve just been hearing nightmare stories from the dealer across the street. They need a aftermarket Clutch pushrod because they are spewing all your trans into the now leaking primary no shit, crankshaft runout issues on brand new bikes, blowing head gaskets left and right and your waiting 28-32 weeks for parts, not labor on stock bikes nothing modified. Stators and Regulators on back order, They are screwing their customer base and it’s going to bite them like you showed with a new bike obviously.

I always had much respect for HD but ever since I paid all the required fees to own my motorcycle , I had to turn right around and spend another 15hundred to get it right. That's me doing the work. The bikes aren't getting better , cheaper for them , to hell with the consumer !

That's why I don't buy new bikes. I know I'm going to be pulling and upgrading problem areas. You can find clean bikes with less than 20k miles for 5 to 6 thousand all day in my area. 20k is nothing for the basic components that don't get changed.

      @jimkraft9445 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That is true. I put 60,000 miles on an 84 XLCH Sportster. At 30,000 the crank pin flaked off. Total rebuild. After that it was trouble free. When the ignition module went belly up, I changed it to points and condenser. No more problems with that.
I started on a 1942 "45" flat head when I was 14, back in 1955. I am not new to harley problems, but that old 45 took an awful lot of abuse from me and just kept running.
I am 82 now and do not do any long rides anymore. Just putt around the back roads where I live and to town which is only about 7,500 population. I will say the EVO has been the most reliable of all the bikes I have owned. About the only other thing I had to replace was the stator. Since I do all my own work in my own garage, I like the simplicity of the EVO. I can change carburetor jets in about 10 minutes without removing the carburetor.

If you purchase a Flo reusable oil filter for around: $120 you can see everything the magnetic pre filter and stainless screen catches when you change your oil and clean the filter. This imo is the best way to catch a problem early.. These type filters are used in aviation and have significant advantages over unknown quality paper filters. They pay for themselves and will last way longer than your bike. My 2012 SG with 50k is on it's 15th oil change so my Flo filter has more than paid for itself while providing cleaner, cooler oil to my 103.

    Again, good video, thanks.

And people are still complaining about the shovel and maybe they are a Harley lovers bike but a gear drive 80 cube Evo well they are the way to go and im sorry but these engines are super fast wearing engines, I have a U.L side valve and yes I changed the head gaskets twice and its not rocket fast but I never really bought a Harley for going fast I actually would own a Japanese technology bike if I wanted 1500 cc and sorry but Harley is losing many.

Owner of a 2005 Dyna, originally 88, now big bored to 100ci. This has been the worst bike ever. Unreliable pieces of junk Harley’s are. I’ve spent 8k in my motor. Dark horse crankshaft (stock one had 45 THOUSANDTHS RUNOUT), S&S big bore, SE cams, fueling cam plate, pump, breathers, injectors, and so much more which I’m not going to discuss. Do not buy a Harley whoever reads this comment. They sound great, look great, but if you really want to start hating motorcycles, own a Harley for a week.

Got a deal on a 2008 FLHRCI with cams and bars and full legends suspension etc .. was great until got an inner primary leak .. that turned out to be a blown compensator that blew the clutch assembly and a tranny bearing .. not such a good deal now
My 2023 RG 124 got some lifters getting old .. put 26k miles on that bike in one year .. not gentle miles .. prob gonna put up the loot to bulletproof the road glide from the bottom up. I need a 100k mi motor with the miles I ride

i sold parts alone for 3 years if you don't want to spend double the money on parts let alone cost of labor on a bike a sportster is the best option to get in and get out without losing money on harley if u keep it stock and buy around 3k-3500 dollars, but honda reliablity is unmatched then the other japanese bikes then the least relaible are like non maintained aprilla, ktm and ducati. unless you got thousands in disposable income i wouldnt i bought a vicotry after riding and making money on a sportster just my honest opinion i hope you do well in your journey and chase for a bike

@jon5423 so especially if it has 75k km on it and only last 2 years maintenance records i shud run then right? Due to cam tensioners maybe never being changed (instead of every 10k km/miles) cuz he said he never heard of that issue of the plastic wearing away and getting into the oil pump, also all the problems listed in the video. The bike may not have been serviced correctly maybe I shud jus buy a kawasaki or Honda. I wanted an older Harley but I haven't been able to find a good one. But I feel like everybody is gonna rot the shi7 out of me for riding a sportster cuz of the stupid stigma attached to it and not wanting to hear ppl n their stupid comments. For a beginner rider n being only 5"10 n 200 lbs heavy build prob the best bike for me to learn on. Cuz 7k canadian for that bike is apparently a good price n it appears to be in good shape, sorry I'm jus struggling with the decision cuz I like the bike. Can I tell if it has excessive oil coming out of breather bolts without disassembling parts? Thank u so much! Also for somebody who doesn't kno how to work on bike myself. This sounds like a nightmare to own.

I don't think an ST is a good first bike. They are heavy and maintenance intensive. That said, no bike is cooler in my opinion. I just picked up an 05 Deluxe. Looks like it spent its life on the showroom floor. Has 89K on it.
Changing the tensioners FOR THE FIRST TIME today.
Don't be scared. They aren't time bombs.

Most major problems were earlier Tc88 models and the 96 and 103. Most Tc88 motors are solid if you do the few things you mentioned with cam plate and oil pump n such. The major problems arise when people start pumping them full of juice or "beef" em up. An yes the Evo was solid and yes captain obvious (to the ones Wondering why) they discontinued it for a reason 🤩💸💹
