When it comes to the exterior design, there no denying that it’s eye-catching, even when you’re looking away from the huge grille up front! As for under the bonnet, well if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on the top-of-the-range M440i (like we’ve got here), you’ll be treated to 374hp thanks to the 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol that you've got upfront.

I’ve already warmed up to the grille! I actually love it way more than I thought initially. I like how BMW is going towards having multiple shapes and sized grilles that are all still undeniably BMW for Audi all of their grilles are all the same on all the cars.

Nah, not supercar, but way quicker than expected. 0,7 secs either mean they were REALLY pessimistic rating the acceleration (maybe leaving (a lot of) room for the M4) or the engines spread a lot and this one does to the top end.
But in general, acceleration values are like fuel consumption values. Both are underrated...

Not really, BMW claims the same time - 3.8s in their first M3/4 RWD models. Wait for the xdrive versions till next year, they will be a bullet... :D

That's not BMW's decision, the law always means a front number plate has to be a certain size to be visible etc. If car manufacturers had their way, there'd be no plate at all.

Yeah, times have changed. A Ferarri F40 had 4.5 seconds for the launch. And that was among the best of the time. Nowadays you get that in compact cars.
I agree with you totally about the external appearance - the car looks good, great in places except for around the rear wheel where it looks a bit bloated.
I loved the profile of its predecessor.
The color really suited the car. The grilled doesn't stand out as much.
But the ugliness is still obvious

I bought a 440i M xdrive yesterday, used 2021, 14k miles. I like it , I have zero issues with the grill. maybe 2 yrs ago when it first came out it was more undesirable.
I bought a 420D M sport Plus with tech plus pack . I like it as much as the 840D. Simply brilliant. Comfortable , fast, quiet, looks stunning ( my mate thought it was the 8 series) .... and 60mpg / 600mile range from a 65L tank .
I love how no one noticed the Rolls Royce keys at 6:20 Maybe its his way of telling us he has the new ghost ready for review.

I just got my new M440ix in a special order green. You did give the car a nice review but you left a few things out. I bought the car fully loaded and it is one fun fast car to drive. We also own the new 330i and have driven nothing but BMW for 20 years so big fans. I bought the $1,500 tire upgrade which gives it a better ride and less noise. The package also gives extra cooling to drive at high speeds in hot temperatures. They give you an electric pump that will inflate and seal the tire if you get a flat. You didn’t talk about the ventilated seats which I love in the car and can be activated by the voice control. The reason it didn’t work is that you have to say Hello BMW and then tell it what you want. It’s so much better then previous systems. You can change the recognition command to anything you want but that is how the system knows you want her to work and do something. The car also has remote start and lock. Also the lights are laser lights if you upgrade and well worth it. It has an option for the system to learn how you drive and it will help with the handling of the car keeping it more leveled. I know many talk about the grill which I don’t have the front license plate on it but I love the look. Also I get stopped every time I take the car out by people telling me how hot the car is and its the grill that they notice and love. I also like that i can just use the credit card as the key and I don’t have to carry keys anymore.

@@Sergesedd22 It is so much fun to drive and gets lots of attention. I also got the $100 recording camera option. If you get into an accident the car records everything so you have proof of who was at fault. They tried to think of all kinds of things with this car. Like where you put sunglass that little storage unit on the left of the steering wheel wasn’t covered in fabric on the inside on my 530i but it is now. so sunglasses don’t get scratched. Just praying I don’t get too many tickets driving this car it just wants to race. I recommend the $1,500 tire upgrade it pays for itself. Tires last longer and were cheaper and better ride plus you get increased handling and engine cooling.

BMW officially claimed time is a joke. I would think it's irresponsible. Because literally all tests show a result like 0.7 second faster than they claimed. It's a big difference.

Prior Design is working on some interesting front bumpers for m3 + m4 and they look great. This on the other hand... A face that only a mother could love.

When Mat sat in front of the grill at 14:00 that front end looked really good. I will admit that the bigger grill in black or that gray color is growing on me.
with that front end, the side profile looks like a Mazda. looks okay from the front but nowhere else

I have a 23 version and it’s just so damn good. Last version with the cockpit and not that stupid screen. It’s such a dual personality car. And the grill is lovely.

Okay, so at launch I hated this, but now... I BLOODY LOVE IT! I love it so much in fact that I’ve gone ahead and ordered one to replace my A5 daily driver!
I am also ordering the 440i. Got it full specs for 70k

Tune one of these along with catless downpipes and you've asily got over 500+ HP. Pretty impressive (minus the grille)

It's a great car and very driver focused if you don't want a full-blown M4.
I like the new BMW design grill.
Not to mention the engine it is absolutely sublime
1:10 - the saving grace on THIS version of the grille is that the outline is dark/body colored instead of being a contrasting silver which makes it stand out too much. the dark outline thus mimics the styling on the FULL M Coupe and Sedan which don't have a seperate outline at all, the openings are blended directly into the body color.
Looks amazing, so aggressive, now it has a nice front to go with amazing back lights, interior could’ve done with a modern revamp, still will sell loads so will the 3 series

the performance is nuts for the price. My 2017 M4 gave me 0-100 as low
as 3.8 but it usually ranged in the low 4s. This should smoke the old M4
at least at the start, because of the x drive but it dont think it will
on the long run or on the 1/4 mile, the old m4 is a torque beast

The looks of the M3 and the M4 are growing on me, these designers have seen this for years so if it grew on them it would grow on us
I guarantee you people will love the new 3 and 4 series when they get used to it, I remember E60 5 series came out and people hated and now people still love it

I've owned 16 BMWs over the years and still have one, but regularly drive my Mustang GT Premium, loaded, including Recaros, 19" rims, blah, blah. Price was a big point of consideration, but styling considerations were the tipping point.
In that colour, that grille is actually growing on me. Maybe if the top was lower so it matched the line of the lights it would look better but I really dont hate it anymore. Think when I start seeing them on the road I'll know but I think it will grow on me.

I have had more BMWs then any other make of car, me personally love the new grill but I understand why people are shocked by it, but BMWs always grow on people and I’m sure everyone will love the look of it after a while, if I had the money I’d be more then happy to get this car

See what Matt means about the looks. When I first saw this car, I loved the silhouette and side/rear views but thought the grill was actually a joke. Now I think it's actually spectacularly good looking everywhere.
I've been fortunate enough to have a 520 530 sports and the old 4 series m sport i now have this 440 msport and out of all of them this has to be the best drive out of all of them the grill isn't that big in my opinion it makes it look really good although pictures dont do it justice but it's an amazing car 👍🏴
There is no way that car has only 374 HP and can do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. This thing must be MASSIVELY underrated for torque and horsepower. Not sure why BMW underrates their engines so much. They would sell more if everyone knew how powerful they actually are.
I think Germans do that because they want don't want to subvert customer's expectations even in the worst case scenario. So 374 HP is very conservative, since we know it'll probably do maybe 400 HP or more, but they just keep it lower so that customers get what they expect. But I love how Germans underrate their engines :D
There are multiple reasons why. For one insurance is often lower for cars with less BHP and for bmw you are going to need every bit of help you can with insurance. It’s also for tax reasons certain countries tax vehicles based on power output and engine displacement so it helps keeps costs down. And then it also helps their reputation, it’s such a well known “secret” that they produce more power than they say they do so it makes people subconsciously trust the brand more. It also means that they don’t have to buy back the car if the horsepower is substantially lower if they underestimate it.

I was about to say there's no way that trunk is as large as the Audi's A5/S5 (I own a 2018 S5, and the trunk is HUGE), but then I realized those stats probably pertain to the coupé and not the Sportback. I was baffled for a few seconds. Nice vid!
