I leased one of these back in 2020. I was 22 years old and suddenly you could get into a BMW 840i for £400 per month with a £2k deposit. It was an unbelievable deal and trust me the car was well worth the money. When the lease came to an end there was nothing quite like it on the market as prices had gone up like crazy. I absolutely loved that car.

My dad had two of the original E31 8 series. He had a 1992 one, original 1st gen. Then he had a 1994 one, which was still original 1st gen, but better brakes, steering, it just handled a lot better. Both were 840's by the way. The 1992 one he had for 4 years, then sold it and then had the 1994 one he had for 2 years in the UK, then sent it to Cyprus where he had it for another couple of years then selling it there. I drove the 1994 one, what a motor! Effortless driving experience. I've never really gelled with this one, it just doesn't do anything for me. this was in the early 2000's by the way.

I had an 840i last year, and loved it so much that I swapped it for an M8 Comp last week. It's definitely not 'too much' I've been gunning it non-stop, I don't think I'll ever get bored of hearing the V8 roar!

@@PardeepSingh-ls1vd I did strongly consider the 850 but I've never had an M car before and wanted to go for the full fat version if I was going to make the change!
Sunroof is a fair point but my 840i never had one and I prefer the carbon roof on the M8 anyway. Comfort wise there's definitely a compromise with the much stiffer and sporty M8, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for more power and the much more aggressive styling.
Having also had the 840 I did want something that looked a BIT more different on the exterior so the M8 it was!
If I was new to the 8 Series, I'd probably say the M850 is the sweet spot between comfort and power - hope this helps.

A fair review Matt, each to their own, had an 840i Coupe for two years and loved every minute of it. It had every option pack on it and when you learn all of the tech, it's fantastic (and you can turn the bits off that you don't like - gesture control and anti collision braking). Just for accuracy, in the UK, the 840i was RWD only, and the 840d and M850i xDrive only.

Last summer I set my heart on an LC500 convertible for all the right reasons; stunning styling, peachy V8, gorgeous interior if you can ignore the rotten touchpad .... and then took it on a 2hr test drive around Cologne, where I live. Shock, horror .... the scuttle-shake was unbearable and the fuel economy about 20mpg on that run. So, by way of a comparison, I took a BMW M850i convertible on the same test drive and enjoyed very smooth, rattle free progress and about 26mpg. It's now on my drive, and I love it. Yeah I think you're bang on there. The 8-Series is like a 5-Series coupe but enlarged. It's good, but it's an everyday car. It can't compare to something as special as the LC500, which looks a bit like an LFA with an LFA engine (minus 2 cylinders) and a gearbox they made an effort to be entertaining and a unique interior. I think you MUST spec those glass things and a two-tone interior to make it somewhat interesting. But honestly, we have to give praise to BMW for still stocking this model because it is one of only two or three models left that isn't absolute trash or ugly.

Agree about the standard 840 coupe impracticality and cramped interior, however the 640 / 840 Gran coupes are gorgeous [if big]. A mate bought one 2022 OMA. AIUI all the 840d's have 4WD and other options as standard, which means the massive torque of this engine is applied to the road.

If could choose I’d have a BMW exterior fitting with a Mercedes interior. My ideal combo. That 8 series does look damn fine I have to say.

Hi Matt, just a point about the BMW 3 litre engines. Despite saying ‘twin power’ under the bonnet they are both single turbo engines. The one turbo has two scrolls inside, hence the tagline ‘twin power turbo’.
    Fantastic review 👍

Not always the case. The 535d I had was twin turbo. You’re right in respects that the engine cover says twin power turbo regardless of whether they have one or two snails, though!

I drive a 840 and have driven BMWs for over 20 years from the five series to the seven series. The last car was a 550M. I can say the 8 is the best BMW I've driven. You can change stations and the guesture control is awesome.

My 2017 M240i convertible has the same engine (3L straight 6 twin turbo petrol), the same 8 speed ZF gearbox - yet in a smaller, lighter package. Handling is great and another TH-camr recently got 0-60 in 4.2 secs and 0-100 in 9.8 secs from the M240i. So just as good quality, but smaller and definitely a yes on the FUN factor!

4:25 You can also park the car with it while you’re standing next to it. Fantastic party trick. 😁
5:29 at that screen you can pinch your fingers and swipe and that will move the ‘camera’ around the car.
5:37 The Bowers & Wilkins sound system is even better (it’ll cost you a small car though). 😁
5:59 you can turn the ‘protection system off with the button next to the alarm lights. You can also override the system by pushing in the accelerator a bit (quite a bit tbh) more.
8:45 “I’m fairly sure you could land a medium-size helicopter on the bonnet” 🤣🤣🤣

Great vid and a nice grille design for one on a new BM. I have had 3 original 840csi and they were/are superb cars and probably a good investment now, bought at around 80k miles sold at 120, never any problems (always change gear box oil) I have had a 650 convertible for 8 years still love driving it. I will buy a convertible one of these with the V8 when the price drops to £15k! PS I think the old 840's were £70k new!

I think the LC500 is a beautiful car, it’s just stunning. Interior is different but also a beautiful place to be. But, I couldn’t get on with the drive. It started to get bland very quickly, even with the V8. My much older M6 gran coupe was more enjoyable, never mind the new M8. It’s a shame, for me, as the LC was the car I thought I’d never sell but purely based on how it looked.

Thanks for doing this review Matt. Despite being a base model that car is spec’d very well, Driving Assistant Plus (auto steering) is not a feature you see often. When you were trying to change the radio channel I’m pretty sure on this version the gesture is a two-fingered stabbing motion, not the more logical swipe gesture that you were doing. That’s the case in my girlfriend’s X3. I have a 640d M Sport (which, by the way, I’ve never really loved as was the case with you and your 6 series convertible) and I’m pretty sure the 8 will be my next car. As @chrischambers6069 said they’re great value for the money.

11:18 Damn, I've always admired the current 8 series since seeing it in the BMW Welt group showcase showroom in Munich about 6 months before it actually launched and had the 840d Xdrive down as a possible replacement for my Jaguar XKR. Going to actually take one out now as you've put me off it a bit with this review. I've seen some two tone interiors such as tan and black or red and black that might be an improvement on the bland cabin situation. Thanks for the review.

I agree with your analysis of the current bmw interiors, especially when lined up against Merc or Audi. I had a M140i when they very first came out in 2016 and the interior was bland on that, but like for like it came in so much cheaper than the S3 or A45 of the same time and in my opinion, is still to this day a far better car to drive. I haven’t driven this 8, but imagine it’s much the same. If driven back to back with the s53 and an Audi equivalent, I imagine they’d be better wafters but not as fun when making haste.

What a cracking review. You mentioned the 4 door grand coupe. Theres a stunning blue one in a showroom i walk past everyday. Im in awe of it. It just looks effin Awesome. Would i have it? Sure as eggs are eggs, if i was wealthy enough that is, but i know deep down i'd fall out with it. The 2 door is a gobsmacking great looking car.
However you mentioned the OMG master of all coupes the LC Lexus. I'm not clever enough with words to describe that utter work of arts. If ever i'd win on the lottery then straight to Lexus Stockport and get them to find me the hybrid V6 and the V8. Best of both worlds.

It’s to your credit that you give such an objective view on a car your have in your inventory. BTW you can change the track with the gesture control, it’s a two finder swipe - you were just using the wrong gesture 😂

I have been looking at a 8 series gran coupe 840i as you said matt its a great looking thing considering its £70k plus new used prices are very good, but as you pointed out bmw interiors are a bit boring lets the car down considering how it looks on the outside, you're parking issues might be a problem for me as i have to park my car in a garage!! glad i watched cheers.

I'm glad you mentioned about the flat buttons as no-one else seems to as they are not great to use compared to the previous i-Drive set-up (as i recently found on a test-drive of a one-series as they're used in pretty much all BMW of similar generation). Still at least they actually _have_ buttons unlike some of the newer Beemers. But yeah, despite the modernisation these beemers lack soul in the interior, their exteriors are hit or miss, and they're over-priced but only their powertrains keep us interested.

I've driven two of these in 'grand coupe' guise as a loaner car from BMW when mine was in for a recalls on two separate occasions. One was specced similar to yours on the video and the other was the same but had the white (Ivory I think it was called) interior with the sunroof. I had the same opinion as you, it was a bit boring and uninspiring with everything black and a black headliner. When I stepped in to the other one it was like a different car, completely uplifted the interior and made it a nicer place to be. I'd go with the ivory or merino interior.

The reverse assist backs up where you just drove, for example if you needed to reverse back out of a multistory or on a country lane, it remembers your last 50m of driving
