The year is 2040. All cars are electric. There is no need for a grille at all anymore. BMW simply cannot cope. They pivot and become a barbecue manufacturer. Weber is their primary competitor. They each fight for display space at Home Depot. I choose the Weber because it’s still naturally aspirated.

I love how he says it's "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde". That's literally how I described my M340i. The car has this amazing dual personality. If you run it in ECO PRO or Comfort, it is very relaxing and efficient. If you put it into Sport (+), the car comes alive and is ready to play ball. It's fantastic!

Everyone is talking about the monster grill, but the thing looks like a 2013 Infinity G37 coupe from the A pillar back.

I might even like the grill if the rest of the design didn’t look like crap. They gave it a brutish grille but it looks dainty from the a pillar back
The back from B pillar onwards also reminds me of the last gen Accord Coupe. If anything, the Accord Coupe had the Hofmeister kink and this doesn’t!! 🤣

@@tonicipriani That is true. This is pretty much the same engine as the twin turbo in the E90/92 Gen. I remember when that came out in 08 there was a magazine that asked which would you buy, M3 or Challenger SRT....the BM got many votes, ask that question now......Not so sure anymore. I'd take the Challenger SRT over the M4 version of this, and that Challenger hasn't changed much design wise. That being said there will always be the BMW fanboys.

I drove that car yesterday. It is such a monster
Test drove this car 3 times and it is nothing but awesome. Drove the Audi S5 and the MB E350 coupes and there is no comparison. Looks are subjective and happen tho think it has a great body style including the new grille...which gives it a more aggressive look.
People don't like change and most of those people are the older ones like your parents or grandparents. So give it a try and I'm sure you will agree.

"For the cooling"? The Supra's vents aren't even real, how can they even say that? It's just a "my grill's bigger than yours" thing. It's like duct taping a salami stick to your thigh. No one believes you and it just looks ridiculous.
It's for the chinese market, plain and simple. They like humongous grills for some reason.
@@detaart I don't get this reason either. The rich Chinese who can afford luxury cars overwhelmingly prefer being chauffeur driven. BMW and Merc even make extra long wheelbase versions of their loewr model cars to cater for them. Coupes like this 4 series won't sell well there.

@@lmythreya LWB cars are preferred because today many Chinese families have only one car (some in the large cities have 2) for the entire family (with children+parents=7-8ppl) so space is a big factor for them in car shopping. people usually don't buy vans in china for personal use so LWB sedans and SUVs are popular. and I yeah 4 series doesn't sell well in China and I don't think anyone likes this grill there at all LOL

I feel sorry for BMW's grille designer because he is trying his best to get fired but the execs still love his work. It's like the Seinfeld episode where George is trying to get fired by the Yankees but keeps failing at failing.

Why though? The grille looks pretty good, reminiscent of older models with vertical grilles. Also, compared to many modern cars the actual grille is reasonable sized, especially compared to its siblings X7 and 7er,its basically a small square with some side intakes.

Bigger, heavier, and less engaging to drive, I wish the grill was the only problem with modern BMW.

My friend literally just ordered Toyota Yaris (not kidding) GR instead of M2... Light, fun, manual.... way cheaper. At first i was like... wtf, but it really makes sense.

Finally there is a car journalist who was honest about the grill
The worst part isn’t even the grille it’s the lack of hoffmeister kink and sharp body line going down the side. They need to bring back the 3 series coupe, don’t change anything just shorter, lighter and two doors.
They have to concentrate to the cars that made them successful

The chinese market wanted a bigger grill. And since it's the biggest market by far, they obeyed.
@@amadexi china is only like 4-5% bigger than the euro market according to statistica. So euro/NA markets bigger than their asia one. Unless they think they can grow massively in china. Personally I think they just messed up.

Bought a drop top in White. Blacked out and red interior. Gorgeous car. I like the front end! Quite a bit bigger than my 19’ drop..Fantastic machine
My problem with this car's exterior is not the grill. It's the rest. The car does not look distinctive enough on its own.
Merge the grill together, and the car becomes a Genesis.
Merge and reduce the grilll, and it becomes an Infiniti.
Merge and shape the grill into a triangle and it becomes an Alfa.
Everything from the front/tail lights, to the mirrors and windows follows a set design trend plaguing multiple big brands. The car is not recognisable as a BMW, unless people look at the badge or the grill. And that, to me, is a flawed design.
Still dont like the grill...

@@jamierietkerk1796 I could see BMW potentially having a hard time doing good units with these. The grille is very controversial, many people are appalled by it. Coupes in general are dying out, and the A5 simply looks better.
Nice review gents, I just came across your channel. The grill does polarise people and like a boil, it does grow on you I tend to walk around the rear of mine when exiting the car or not looking back at it. Though behind the wheel you do not see it.

I love that front end, I've had 4 bmws and loved them. Actually had the brand new at the time 335i coupe 2007 (the first time they came out with 3.0 twin turbo). I love this grill, i think it makes the car look a lot more expensive and sophisticated

True shame on the 440i being heavy, soft and "un"special, something no BMW should be. It looks quite awful too, not even the grille, the entire thing. The sedan is far better. Would be nice if they made a 2-series RWD sedan based off the upcoming new coupe, which seems to have become the new torchbearer for anything fun from BMW.
I use to hate the front grill...but in the right color it has really grown on me.
Ugh, that grille looks like someone bent over and pressed their butt cheeks against the front end. Ruins an otherwise nice-looking car.

Been watching you guys for a long time at this point - you've always had great camera work and music, but it's amazing to see how much more.... studio-quality esque this is. The voiceovers have even more soul, the camera cutaways and angles add a whole new layer of sight, the chemistry between ya'll has gotten even better, etc. It's really cool, congrats!

"I'm getting used to it" No I'm not. It's appalling, hideous, unsightly, outrageously ugly from the front. Nobody in his right mind should purchase the new bmw models with this grill. Competitive alternatives from audi and mercedes exist and those simply look better.
The face of the bmw is something you're going to have to explain to people. You show them your new car and instead of going "yeah thats nice" they're going to ask you what is up with the front and you're going to be explaining that you're aware that you bought the ugliest sport coupe on earth "but its a bmw and it drives really good."
Nobody should bother with that. Buy a competitor and be proud of your car instead of permanently conflicted

@@atarvhegde5210 The Chris Bangle 7-series hasn't, so I'd venture a guess that this won't go down as a classic the way the shark nosed BMW's have. It's a shame too, because the rest of the car is very well proportioned. Lets hope the incoming two series doesn't follow this design language in front. Let's also hope it is available with a manual transmission. God help them if it's FWD.
