- It’s time to find out which luxury electric car will take you the further - the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53, or the BMW i7!
We’ve got Mat and Daniel (the presenter from @carwowDeutschland) in both of these cars, they’ve been fully charged, and they’re going to drive them continuously up a British motorway until the batteries are fully depleted!
So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the Mercedes, we’ve got the top-of-the-range Mercedes-AMG EQS 53. As a result it comes equipped with two electric motors that can produce 658hp and 950Nm of torque. However, this car also has a £9,000 performance pack added to it, so the power output has been increased to 750hp and 1,020Nm!
The EQS is also equipped with a 107.8kWh battery pack that is good for a claimed range of 357 miles. Naturally, it’s pretty heavy, weighing in at 2,580kg, and an AMG EQS fitted with the £9,000 performance pack will cost around £170,000.
Next up we have the BMW. It’s the 760i edition, and just like the EQS it’s also equipped with two motors. The power output is 544hp and 745Nm of torque. It’s heavier than the EQS, at 2,640kg, and it has a 102kWh battery pack that’s good for a claimed range of 385 miles. Given it’s not the i7M (which isn’t available to buy yet), it’s cheaper than the EQS, starting from £110,000.
So which will go further - the BMW, or the AMG? Comment with your guess, then sit back and see which wins!

Limiting the speed at near-zero range is a smart idea because it (should) force you to get off the freeway and onto smaller roads where an abrupt loss of power (and going into neutral) won't nearly be as dangerous

To be honest the range was much better than I expected. That’s around 485km on a full charge. That’s pretty much the same as a V8 twin turbo car. However I’m sure that range will drop rapidly if you drive like 160-200kmh on the autobahn for a longer time. And that’s exactly what these big limousines are built for. So that would be interesting to see.
From my experience, when you go above 120km/h, the comsumption goes up about 10-15% depending on the car. But if you go above 150km/h, it's about 30% more. so if you go 160, i imagine these cars would do just over 200 miles of range.
yeah, good point, I won't drop that kind of cash on a car, just to drive like a geriatric...

All modern cars are junk bar a few Japanese ones. Anyone in denial of this is NOT a mechanic or is easily conned by branding.
So the EQS didn't have to look like that to get great range. Nice to know.

I’m afraid your journey ends here, traveler.
Both EQE and EQS are super ugly.
@@Jorsten YES! I love the normal old ICE mercedes design, but the EV's.. would never want one based on design.
@@Jorsten Make no mistake, the EQA and EQC are also hideous.
What happened after you stopped the Murk, is that the battery at the chemical-physical level "recovered" a bit. That's not a hidden reserve. Regarding the battery's expected lifetime, completely running it down to 0% charge in reality (rather than specifications) likely counts as much more than one discharge-recharge cycle.
The AMG has over 200hp more, so ofc it won’t drive as Long. It is also way quicker than the i7. He did also floor the AMG several times

I agree, the sight of the I7 made me sick until I saw it in real life and it's actually very nice and looks grand/expensive
Agree. Having seen a few EQS on the road it looks more E-class when Merc were aiming for an EV S-class. The i7 is nice.
The thing with the EQS lineup is that the cheapest one is also the one with the longest range, its almost 100 miles MORE than the EQS 53 you tested
Just like normal e class amg and e200
It's always like this
That grill at the front of the BMW makes it impossible to even look at!!!
It’s due too the range calculation method. If you have a less powerful engine, the calculated range is higher. However the aero and battery pack is the same. So if you were to drive both at the same time at the same speed, the range will be very similar.

Personally I think the range should be taken as that which can be achieved *before* the car goes into any kind of tortoise mode.
If you can’t hit roads speed limit it’s over. Tortoise mode normally reduced power, which is fine. Most cars only need about 50kw to reach legal speeds so they have plenty to reduce from before hitting that.

BMW has been like this for over the past 20 years. Nearly all of their models have been hated at launch compared to their predecessors. And the 1 series and original M2 got a lot of hate from BMW fans when they were first released. Of course they all grew to become very popular models.

So what is the equivalent diesel or petrol Mercedes car and weight. Just thinking 2580 kgs in material alone compared to equivalent petrol or diesel. Including the i7 at 2640kgs. Thoughts?
I absolutely always drive in the motorway doing pulls in sport+ mode 😂
Yes, that's funny. Over 50 years ago, a stand-up comedian in my country emigrated to Germany because "we" did not think he was funny. "There" he was experienced as very funny and when he died he almost got a state funeral. So, now let's go to Germany, where these two are driving these cars.
In the ICE alternative for these cars, on the German motorway ("Autobahn"), their drivers would be on the left-most lane only, drive 250 km/h as long as possible, blink their high beam lights when a slower car is in their way, slow down when there is a speed limit (e.g imposed to suppress noise towards a domestic area near that road), and as soon as the limit is lifted accelerate again. They might have removed the 250 km/h limit one way or another and chances are they want to race another car in their league. As these cars are expensive relative to modal, the drivers think they "own" the road and everybody has to move to the slower lane for them. It's the German form of "polite" that feels very aggressive when you did not grow up in that. E.g. in the wider "Ruhr" (river) area, there is a lot of wealth and you'll frequently be blinked by drivers of supercars trying to do 300 km/h or so.
One of the airports in the Ruhr region, decades ago, had to modify the setup of their Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar system for low flying aircraft (like helicopters) because every time these supercars drove by, they popped up as a helicopter or so, in the ATC system and ATC agents tried to contact that thing. To no effect.
Because the German motorways are rather crowded, have maintenance works that reduce the numbers of cars that can pas a section per minute, there are traffic jams frequently. Travel from, say, Hamburg (DE) to the Basel (CH) border - about 800 km - and you would be slowed down by some 20 road maintenance stretches, some of which come in clusters. Whatever speed your car can do, you will end up nearer Google Maps's assumption of 8 hours for the trip that probably applies the "German advised maximum speed of 130 km/h" than a lot faster. (Google should give me an option to set the maximum speed I want to drive, where allowed.)
Experience with the AMG badge leads me to assuming the driver goes about as fast (aggressive in another culture) as possible, accelerates and slows down maybe every minute, and when possible tries to race another "fast" car.
In the beginning of the video, the Wh/km of the AMG is some 3.6 times as bad as a Tesla on a hard day - both in an English polite driving style. There are lots of exceptions to this prejudice, though, where people peacefully drive these cars in a modal mode.
It's a bit like trying to get as fast as possible as far as possible with a Bugatti Veyron. That at 400 km/h burns through its tank of fossil fuel in 12 minutes (= 80km/100 litres = 80km/1000 kWh = 12.5 kWh/km as 1 litre equals 10 kWh). Imagine you started with new tyres. So you fill the tank again and start your next stretch at 400 km/h. You cannot complete the 12 minutes because your tyres are wasted after 20 minutes at that speed.
Car Wow: let’s compare the range on these.

EQS has such a unique look in person. I7 isn’t nearly as bad in person either
I7 and EQS are 8.1/10.
Both do have unique looks. It's all based on personal taste I suppose. I've seen the EQS at a Target and a Saltgrass and I saw the i7 on the freeway and at At Home. The i7 gets my vote because it's a bold look and you can point it out as a BMW from anywhere. I also own an M550i and really enjoy BMW performance, design language, and the features.
Both are uniquely hideous, but the EQS was designed by a blind person.
The EQS looks like a Honda Civic of old.
i7 despite it's polarizing design has incredible road presence. EQS on the other hand looks weak and silly.
In my experience for electric cars on average, NEDC you only get 70-80% of claimed and WLTP you get around 80-90% of claimed. The ev database real world range is most accurate I've come across
It seems BMW built the i7 for the studio execs in LA. I see them all over the place in Studio City. From Sherman Oaks to Glendale you cant miss them all. That ultra-wide screen is fantastic
screens are hideous. Just an excuse for these manufacturers to cut costs. Its just plastic, a nice metal button or knob would be nice with an integrated screen.

Yeah the question is what real damage iff any to the batterie iff you push it untill it has no power at all.?
11 1/2 minutes at 750HP (=559 kW) would completely drain the Murk's battery (in the AMG version with this performance pack). How many hours from 100% to 0%? That gives your average actual kW if you divide the kWh in the battery by the time you drove.
What is also interesting, is to know how many kWh are needed to get the car's battery at 100% again - there are losses in this process and a.o. the efficiency of the car's charging circuits impact how good or bad the difference will be. And likely the composition of the batteries and packs too.
Daniel is just the best presenter to get! Great choice for the german channel and love to see him here too as well! There's a couple other good guys but very fine choice!
Both over 300 miles of (motorway) range. Quite decent and usable. Somehow the EQS does not look great on images or videos but I like it in real life. It is a serious piece of kit.
Yes that’s exactly what I thought about the EQS. It has much more presence in real life, which is weird because on photos or in videos it looks like a basic car.
