Thank you for uploading this movie. I was about 17 when this movie was filmed in the farming area where I lived. I recognize so many places in the movie. The bridge that the car drove off was the one my school bus took on the way to school. There were about 50 of us local people on the opposite river bank watching as the scene was filmed. They let us cross the bridge to get to the point from which to view the crash, but then wouldn't let us go back across the bridge to go home. I had to ride my bike about an additional 6 miles to get to the next bridge to cross the river.
Thanks for this. I remember there were two or three of these fun TV movies when I was a kid, as well as The Manhunter TV series with Ron Howard. I'd love to see the pilot film for that again.
My grandfather told me stories about the depression. Though they weren't legends or history makers, the lives of the common people struggling to survive could be as colorful, intense, and hair-raising as any of them that made the newspapers!
John Milus wrote this. But he quickly fell out with the producers over edits, script changes and pay. At one point, this was going to be a pilot for a TV show starring Ben Johnson as Purvis. But the deal fell through. This is the second in the American International "gangster" trilogy: - Dillinger - Melvin Purvis G-Man - The Kansas City Massacre The first was for theaters. The second and third were TV movies.
Ben was coming down off his Oscar winning high ride in 1971's The Last Picture Show. Always thought he was sexy as hell in his confident, calm and stern demeanor. RIP ol' boy.
This is a Great movie, but i Can't Believe they Used Some of the Same actors in this movie that they made a year later in 1975's Kansas City Massacre, but back then i guess they figured the viewing public Wouldn't know the difference.😊

I LOVE the way they did the credits; a good font & big enough for anyone to read!! Also, identified each actor/character, so you knew immediately who was who!! There were a lot of historical inaccuracies, & in places, the movie was more comical than not, but all in all, it was quite entertaining. I love the old cars, the authenticity of the depressed times, & the stark contrast between the wealthy & common folk. The absolute treachery within the gang was a bit of a surprise!!
This movie is very entertaining and deliberatedly funny, but it is highly unaccurate. The kidnapped guy WAS blindfolded all the time, yet he managed to collect much information. No flirting with Kelly's woman. The agent acting initially in the kidnapping of Mr Urschel (not called Covington) was NOT Purvis. No Rolls-Royce was taken. Actor Dale Robertson was very tall; Purvis was notably very short.
i feel bad for Thatcher at the end. kate brought him lunch when he was held captive, he was trying to return the favor, but she dont even think of this just start throwing tantrum bout how rich ppl ruined her life when rly he never did anything to her she was the one who kidnapped him at gunpoint stole money and car from his family and destroyed their house. and he still dont hold a grudge yet she holds one against him. these movies are rly good, shows how rough and scary crime was in gangland times
I fail to agree with you stance. The movie centered on one rich man. There were thousands of very rich men at that time; did they risk all they had to help the starving
@@alexeinnem5951- There also were thousands of starving individuals who got jobs, worked hard, struggled to feed their families & survive - without breaking the law!! Kate blamed Thatcher, BUT LIKE ANY CRIMINAL, SHE BROUGHT IT ON HERSELF!!
I know their target was kidnapping, but they didn't even try to get the cash and jewelry from the guests at the party. For that matter, there was a LOT of cash on the table.
Interesting/informative/entertaining nice introduction of bank robbers @ movies start-!!!🤗. Realistically portrayed & dressed criminals/automobiles/Interiors of banks/night clubs/telephones/radios/horse drawn wagons of that era-!!!🤗.
HEY Mr. Purvis , There is NO such thing as a Hamburger Meat ! It’s Ground BEEF ! And there is NO such as a Hamburger !They are just BURGERS There is NO Damn HAM in them and Never was! Just Ground BEEF ! The Hamburg Steak originated in Hamburg, Germany! It's a Thick Ground Beef Steak patty cooked and topped with a brown onion mushroom gravy. The Original American style Burger & Cheeseburger originated at a Truck Stop Cafe in Athens, Tx in 1898 by a man named Uncle Dave Fletcher who introduced it at the State Fair in St.Louis, Mo in 1904 ! And if the Bacon came from a Pig born, raised, butchered and processed in Canada, then one could call it Canadian Bacon, butt actually it's a type of Ham !
"BearStar1," This rant would be of interest to some on the Food Channel, but it's TOTALLY out of place here. Falls FLAT on its face. ? WHAT were you THINKING ? BTW, it's NOT "HEY, Mr. Purvis" as he's simply a dramatized character. Instead your beef should be addressed "HEY, Mr. Milius," i.e., John Milius, writer of the script whose culinary misinformation so offended you . . . . and ONLY you.
Fumble fingers wants to join in. She made several penetrating points, about how the wealthy take full advantage of their position. If hunger is the driving force, as she suffered it, then I have no sympathy for the rich man. Guess what! It still goes on today. The super rich have no idea what awaits them after there death. I would like to be there to watch.
Too frivolous and light-hearted, fitting the family-friendly TV standards of the 70's. Hollywood took terrible liberties with the police procedures; getting one of his men shot outside the store and all standing out in the open to make the arrest; the scene in the stairwell would get a LE officer kxxled. Sloppy stuff for a 'G' audience. The ransom was $200,000.
Pervis was a young man back then, always gotta crindge warching all the falsehoods in these types of movies. Great entertainment tho, nothing is accurate however, just keep that in mind and enjoy!

This was released to theaters outside the USA under the title "The Legend of Machine Gun Kelly".

Great movie
I remember watching this when it first aired. At that time the only actor I recognized was the 2nd Darren from "Betwitched".
Buckwheat's Pa was my Uncle Bob, my dad's brother. He played the banjo throughout the movie.
The guy shining shoes at the end is our uncle . We called him uncle shiny shoe
😂@@littleblackduck3134
@carolemorris2436, Be for REAL, Buckwheat, Eddie Murphy,,,,, the funniest Rufus EVER

If there is truth in the film the FBI and Melvin (In real life he offed himself) were not very good at their profession.
They were in experienced paper pushers pursuing ins. Fraud & stolen car cases. Then over night became ( G ) men with minimal training.
Pretty good flick
Over too soon
