- The Klansman - A local Sheriff tries to keep the peace as racial strife hits his small Alabama town as tensions boil over when a black man is accused of raping a white woman.
The Klansman (1974)
Director: Terence Young
Writers: William Bradford Huie, Millard Kaufman, Samuel Fuller
Stars: Lee Marvin, Richard Burton, Cameron Mitchell
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Country: United States
Language: English
Also Known As: The Burning Cross
Release Date: October 25, 1974 (West Germany)
Filming Location: Oroville, California, USA
Synopsis:
A small southern town has just been rocked by a tragedy: a young woman has been violently r*ped. The white town fathers immediately declare that the attacker had to be black, and place the blame on Garth, a young black man. Assuming that the men in white sheets aren't intent on holding a fair and impartial trial, Garth takes to the woods as the Klansmen lynching party hunts him down.
Reviews:
Terence Young is an efficient director and storyteller who never dramatizes his films, like as if he assumes they are dramatic enough by themselves for their mere stories. This film is full of r*pes, sensational and spectacular murders and even a massacre, but it never follows all these extremely dramatic occurrences through but leaves them sort of unfinished. But the direction is skilful to say the least. Actors like Richard Burton, Lee Marvin, O.J.Simpson, Cameron Mitchell and others don't get the chance to play out their roles for the speed and efficiency of the story, although they all make great characters and act splendidly. It's an awesome story with many critical turns to it, and although the quality of the film approaches level B the film should be remembered and discussed for its story, like a testimony of the true nature of the klan. It's not a beautiful fairy tale but rather grim reality all the way, although it pretends to be fiction. It reminds you of other revolting films from the south, like Arthur Penn's "The Chase" with Marlon Brando and "In the Heat of the Night" with Rod Steiger/Sidney Poitier, but this is much more to the point. It shows and explains racism in a way that makes it impossible for any racist to remain so after having seen this minor but important film.

Good old Lee Marvin and Richard Burton, the legends of all time ❤
...don't forget Lola Falana - THE hottie of the decade back then
Love how Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers leads off this movie. Carrying the torch of freedom, where that can get you killed. RIP Lee Marvin and Richard Burton.
Lee and Richard had great speaking voices.
Lee Marvin was a scout sniper in World War 2.
He was wounded twice in the Pacific. He was in the hospital for almost a year recovering from his wounds and took up acting because it calmed his mind.
They called it shell shock, then battle fatigue and now it's PTSD.
I was Navy special operations and I understand.
Semper Fi.
Good stuff thank you
George Carlin did a bit on how the term evolved. Usually for the worse when it comes to these things.
Thanks for your service, Marvin. You are a great actor 👍 God bless you 🙏
Why military and war personal history must ALWAYS have to be so pivotal to explain a person? America is such a violent country. Ist has violence in its DNA.

Some heavy hitters in this film - Richard Burton & Lee Marvin, Cameron Mitchell (?) and the Big Lebowski himself. Never heard of this movie before son I'm watching it for the first time. So far so good.
This movie was excellent and a sleeper. This and the movie The Chase with Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando, and Angie Dickinson was another great movie that addressed small town class status and prejudice.
One of the greatest actors EVER !!!! Mr Lee Marvin 🌎🇺🇲🏆
No more cool guys like him, movies nowadays suck
Lee Marvin generally portrayed good guys. But, you may also recall the characters he portrayed in "Bad Day At Black Rock," and "The Wild One." Those were stellar performances. 🌎
The professionals dirty dozen
Wild One was a really good show.
And in the movie "The man who shot liberty valance"...
I loved 😢 them both ❤ they were the Best in there time the great ones are all gone now but I for one enjoy watching their movies. If anybody else out there loved him like I do and did can I get an amen 🙏
🎬❤️
Amen to the brother! 🌎
A Big Amen to that one
Back when this movie was made here in ,Oroville ca I was in it as an extra in the funeral procession I didn't know at the time what it was all about after really watching it powerful message about equal rights !
Everyone is talking about "famous" actors but have nothing to say about the message . They are superficial people who know everything about Hollywood, but nothing about reality.
Those Fords with the Police package & big block v8s
...and the classic mag wheels on the Sheriff's cruiser!
I bought one at a county auction. 1977 Pontiac lemans with a 455 V8. It was fast fun..
I had a 1971 Dodge Polara 383. Pass everything but a gas station.
Not only OJ, but OJ in the back of a Ford Bronco with a gun. 🤔
LOL
🤠🐴👍
RIP OJ I did see the Bronko 2 also and your free now no more fight on✌️song may God Bless your soul
Good to see Lee Marvin as the good guy.
Lee Marvin is a good guy>>>>> even when he's bad...
Did you know, he was a plumber for set design. Director seen him, gave him a part. Rest is history
@@joshdye1684 Now that's something interesting. I'll have to research this info further. Be right back!🐎💨
@@joshdye1684 Well, when Lee wasn't catching pumas, wild turkeys , smoking cigarettes; and getting into fights in his spare time, he was indeed a plumber's helper. Whilst working as that plumber's assistant, he was asked to replace an actor who had gotten ill during rehearsals. He obviously enjoyed it and landed a job making a small fortune of $7 dollars per week! Looks like your story checks out! Thank you for the enlightenment!🍻😂
@@originalkingalpha5116 $7 a week! Didn’t know that lol. Small fortune right there lmao
You know some whiskey was consumed on this set.....
I think Burton drank gin but I'm sure he didn't discriminate against whiskey
@@craigbfolksinger you just know that wasn't colored water or tea in that whiskey bottle Lee Marvin turned up at the beginning of the movie! LOL
Anything with those two leading the cast can't be bad, herbs out, cup of tea and biscuits, lets go.
The fight scene where Richard Burton is attacked by the off duty cop 😄 Karate chop!😆
Great movie better than i thought, knew Lee Marvin would be good but Burton was a bonus!
Richard Burton with a "southern accent". Thats rich!!!
Looks like they were both paid a buck two ninety eight for this gem.
Wasn't he from Southern Wales? lol
Notice anything about Richard Burton from scene 1 hes Drunk on set and had to do most takes lying down after the film was shot Burton was taken into a clinic for alcoholism for 6 weeks to be treated .
Burton was awful in this prob the worst performance of his career. The idea of the film had a lot of promise but fell sadly short. Not even Lee Marvin could save this clinker.
how about southerners with british accents like in 1860 ...
It's been a longtime ,yea Richard Burton is a sight to always see an Coburn.
Coburn was the greatest!!,,,and a VERY underrated actor!!😊

Dang! I watched til the car with no driver braked itself followed by a minor collision that triggered fires and explosions. That craps as bad as your one guy with two guns, which incidentally never run out of bullets, wins over an army and hour long barrage of gunfire.
no .. the sherriff did reload the thompson ..
Lee Marvin is as good as actors get. Dirty Dozen was a great character for him too.
What a sad movie. Oj lived
Great movie. Burton and Marvin. What a treat.
Richard Burton was consuming no less than 3 fifths of alcohol per day during the making of this movie. Lee Marvin wasn't far behind. Later, Burton didn't recall making this film.
I never did like The KKK,s because of their wrong doings.. These people were all good actors and they played out the parts the way that it was back in the days.
Cars were junk back then. If you got over 100,000 miles on a car back then you were lucky.
Didn't matter like it does today. We didn't have to pay mechanics for most fixes.

That’s funny, NVR thought abt it, 100K used do be like an achievement, haha
O. J. Simpson has his name in the credits for the cast.
We didn't drive all the time back then, 100k was 10-15 years
Just a few minutes in to this movie and no matter what horror show is in store. The kids listening to the police the first time.
Spoiler Alert: People die, everything is burning, and I am crying. Man is Beast.
Love this movie
Unremarkable film. Not great, not bad either. Strange to see the star power it has.
I remember seeing this movie on tv ,back iñ the 70's years later i saw the OJ trial and thought wow.
Burton might have been drunk thru this entire film but I sure couldn't tell. He still put in a good performance.
OJ gets away with it again.😂😂
oh , he`s paying NOW !
Thank You for sharing this film. Appropriate because of the recent Trump dinners at Mar a Lago and there are good people on both sides comment by Donald. i always like the drama of these older movies. No special effects, just good old guns and fire. I recently watched Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin in " Paint Your Wagon" which as a lot of fun. Has some remote similarities, but no Klan or racial content. Clint sings a few numbers as dd Lee Marvin. The gold rush was the theme. Highly recommended if you liked this at all. I bought the movie track sound and film so I can watch it and listen to it anytime.. Love to Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin.
I couldn't finish it too much cut out of the movie
Im pretty confident that i can name the exact location of every scene in this movie
Me too! And a few in Chico's Bidwell Park too...........................
They shot this in california?
@@Joespearacy2 Yep, all in Butte County
Burton was so drunk he had to sit for most of his scenes.
Every car had the Pinto self exploding gas tank even when hit from the front
A GREAT REMINDER OF WHO AND WHAT THE DEMOCRAT PARTY IS!
Nice try but the KKK has ALWAYS been Far Right Wing. The South has ALWAYS been a Conservative stronghold. The KKK supported Trump in 2016 as per their official newspaper the Crusader. Many prominent Klan leaders still support him. The Klan was present in Charlottesville. Last I checked Charlottesville was a Unite The Right Rally. Maybe it's time you come up with some new material but the stuff you are spewing is getting old.

With all these stars and it wasn’t worth a 💩..even I lost interest and I like to watch these movies from this period (I was 9 in 74)But on tv was a really good show “Kolchek The Night Stalker “
Lee Marvin must have been real broke the day he decided to "star" in this turkey. And as for Burton, he stopped acting after the movie Cleopatra, it's too bad he continued to keep "appearing" in movies after that.
It's as if they all live in Canadian County, OK. In 2024.
One of the biggest bombs ever, despite the stars.
This was a terrible movie. I saw it in 1975 and it was dreadful. Terence Young, Richard Burton, Lee Marvin, Cameron Mitchell, etc. must have really needed the money to be in this one.
Drive Carefully--You are in MAGA Country
A lot of potential here but I quit at 27 mins. Too much stock 'jive'. Now, "Mandingo" - there is a movie.
Richard Burton is a great actor but he's American accent is terrible

How prophetic for OJ. He took his "renegade" role so seriously that it played out in later life. Awful Blaxploitation.
