Guys don't worry the falling shot was staged I'm a stunt double!!! lol but I can lowkey skate!! i really liked this video, I think my favorite is handheld
One thing that made me fall back in love with my Ronin S was watching a “10 shots to get with your gimbal” type video where the guy using it was an avid gimbal user for most of his videography. He had a couple shots that looked like he was using a steadicam. When he broke down the settings he used & how exactly he achieved the shot he made me realize just how much I wasn’t utilizing my gimbal. Mainly the smoothness levels. It was something that completely changed the way it looked and felt. Then he spoke about how much side & back handles are needed. It changes the weight distribution so much that it actually changes how effective you are with and he was completely right. Part of the reason my shots looked the way they did was because the heft of it all & holding it at such awkward angles for extended periods of time. Handles made it so I could set up shots better & not just “get the shot” but pay more attention to it & the screen for that matter (because the handles have MOUNTS!!!). Long story short, man. When you get the chance, dive back into your gimbal for a few. Change the smoothness settings on them & add some handles. It’ll make you a believer again.
I think usually for commerical, it is smooth motion(slider, gimbal, dolly, etc) and steady shots. For short film, tv series, documential, handheld/shoulder rig motion is fine.
@brady is at again!!! Get it my man!!! Love this guy. Forget the rest. Listen to what I say, other channels will copy my guy's style and vids, but he is 1of1.
I've just acquired the equipment shown in your video and have been thinking over the options you discussed. Your video came along just at the right time for me to help decide which approach to use in different situations. Great job! Thanks!
Funny that it just happened to be exactly one year since this video was released and I'm watching it! Love your channel man. Keep up the great content!
Yessss!! Thank you so much for this dude I recently just finished a shoot and was conflicted on which I should've used. Glad I went with the handheld 😊
Lovely skating shots in there man. I found myself leaning more towards the glidecam when I used to shoot on dslr because the lack of weight made for jittery handheld footage. I’ve fallen back in love with shooting handheld now I’m on a rigged out Pocket 6K. For me I feel it looks so much more authentic. P.S - I enjoy buying more parts a bit too much
Thank you! This is super helpful to watch - Love the comparison & Test footage; I’ve been living the handheld look, but getting tired from it without the Hook Vest Support - Definitely going to be investing in one, thank you! 🙌🏼🎥✨
Good points, the only thing i dont agree on is the focus pulling. I would love a hand held system but its really expensive considering i dont even own a cage. For my ronin i bought the focus motor for 200$ and it works perfect, i dont have any issues with it
This makes me miss skating! I love shooting handheld but with 90% of the work I do, the client wants clean gimbal footage! I've been trying to shoot more handheld spec work so I have more of that style material in my reel.
quick question. I just invested in a Forza200 instead of a Aputure 120dii. What would you recommend. Go with one ecosystem like Aputure, or try some Nanlites.
Brady hope you this. If i have a pro mist filter like 1/4 tiffen and shooting 4k. Should i change the -Detail- in my profile setting down to 0?... since the diffuser is already lower the sharpness of the footage?
You said it takes really long to balance a gimbal. Well, yes. But I personally have a gimbal with motor locks which makes it very easy to balance, and it has an arca swiss quick release system, so you can just put the gimbal down, take the camera off and on and it stays perfectly balanced!
@@BradyBessette oof yes, but I just have my camera with lens and smallrig cage, and the cage has the arca swiss plate built in! It allows me to open the batterie door while being on the gimbal. Just perfect for me!
Is it funny that like 10 minutes you posted this I was deciding if I wanted to shoot primarily handheld or with my gimbal for a wedding. 😂 Thanks for the help Brady!
Your image looks soo natural! Thanks to you, I found out that this is caused by a mist filter. The tiffen filters are pretty expensive, is there a cheaper alternative you would recommend?
Yo Brady! Great video man! I know, it's almost a year since you've posted this video but have you tried the Gudsen Moza Air2 with the wireless follow focus? I am running a BMPCC 6K and I am so curious on whether to get this or not. I mean the wireless follow focus on that gimbal seems nice and the other benefit of this gimbal is its heavy loading capabilities of I believe 4.2kg - would love to hear your thoughts about that and if you think it's worth or not (it's even cheaper than most of DJI's gimbals) Thanks man!
I think I love shooting handheld cuz it has a rawness to it. A gimbal you can run and gun with on the fly, especially for a wedding for example, but I’d shoot with my Sony for that kinda situation. For filmmaking/doc style handheld is amazing.
Hello, Brady, I am eagerly waiting for your video. Now, it's come... It's more for me than giveaways. I constantly learning from you. Can you please make a video on how you learn and your cinematographer journey? Because I want to be like you. I wish someday we work together. ❤
Something I have learned is when it comes to handheld the bigger the better. Small cameras have less weight and the way DSLR's are designed the placement if the sensor in comparison to the rest of the body makes it even worst. Bigger is better! Size does matter ;D
Great stuff as always, Now I need to get going on my reel and spec ads to start earning some money making videos, Been in film school 3 years and done countless PA gigs on shows and still haven't started paid work for my own videos yet! Your videos motivate me to push through. Will be sending my reel on discord :)
The cons he mentioned don't have to be cons. There are enough Gimbals (Weebill S) that are working with 18650s. Easy, cheap and fast. I have a baseplate on the Gimbal that is compatible with the cage I use so easy to put on or off with no balancing. (Fuji X-T4, Cage, Fringer, Sigma 18-35mm) Focus pulling motor is actually also very cheap for Zhiyun products and works flawless. I'm no shill for Zhiyun but there's always a workaround for things... ;)
I wish the action footage cutaways were not in a situation where the camera op is skating, I'm sure it was fun for you both to shoot, but in terms of education, that will almost never be use case scenario in filmmaking so we cant really get a good idea of what you're talking about.
How is from epic light media like me he was right you are amazing dude and by the way I am a creator as well and I want to make Videos every single week for 2021

it's true I told her to fall cause I'm so rude.
thanks for being my favorite stunt double
You fooled me, I was thinking damn Sara was freezing in last video, now she falling too lol🏃♀️

Hahaha thank you SOnmuch for the words of wisdom. I do love my gimbal still, just handheld wins by a bit!
Can you put a link to the video? Or the title with the Channel name?
@@micharuf6351 for sure (sorry Brady if I’m not supposed to put others links here lol) th-cam.com/video/HGTEunB7XRA/w-d-xo.html

I started shooting handheld a lot more heavily a few years ago. Something about that natural look feels more real.
I agree!
Brady: shows gimbal in action on skating rink and talks about benefits of it
ME: impressed....at the fact that he just casually skating backwards!!!
Oh just a little flex!! Lol thank you!

Hi Brady,
Do you have any recommended smartphone for film making ? And more tips for shooting with smartphone?
I do not. but I have seen that the 12 pro is solid!
Brady - which easy-rig would be appropriate for a sony fx6 setup?
I actually am not quite sure but I know they have weight limits on their website!
Good points, the only thing i dont agree on is the focus pulling. I would love a hand held system but its really expensive considering i dont even own a cage. For my ronin i bought the focus motor for 200$ and it works perfect, i dont have any issues with it
those are good too, but my focus setup was about 220!
This makes me miss skating! I love shooting handheld but with 90% of the work I do, the client wants clean gimbal footage! I've been trying to shoot more handheld spec work so I have more of that style material in my reel.
its fun!! did some more skating in my video out soon (featuring your elements;) )
Main reason I have 2 bmpcc 6k. One for cage and tripod and one for gimbal and 2nd cam shots. For 2k a camera, why not?
it's a good point, I've considered as well!
YOU NEED BOTH! The question is knowing when to use them!
this holds true
quick question. I just invested in a Forza200 instead of a Aputure 120dii. What would you recommend. Go with one ecosystem like Aputure, or try some Nanlites.
I've used both, both are fantastic, only difference is aputure comes with a remote as nanlite does not.
Brady hope you this. If i have a pro mist filter like 1/4 tiffen and shooting 4k. Should i change the -Detail- in my profile setting down to 0?... since the diffuser is already lower the sharpness of the footage?
I typically will run my detail at zero always in camera!
@@BradyBessette Thank u!

Hello great video, does the EZ Rig help you stabilize?
Is it funny that like 10 minutes you posted this I was deciding if I wanted to shoot primarily handheld or with my gimbal for a wedding. 😂 Thanks for the help Brady!
No way! I’m a mind reader
Get a shoulder rig for handheld or use a Panasonic with ibis.
YEAH A new VIDEO!!!
woohooo! Thanks for coming!
@@BradyBessette Always here!!!
Another great content! What’s your favourite lens for handheld shots?
usually something around 35 or 50! thank you !!
Love this one! I try to use stabilization because my hands shake a bit, especially when I'm trying to hold still.
glad you like it!!
Aye gettin dat gimbal balanced while the sun is dropping be CRUCIAL ❗️😩
it's TRUE
I would have been scared carrying all that gear on the ice! that was impressive.
ahahah well thank you!
Your image looks soo natural! Thanks to you, I found out that this is caused by a mist filter. The tiffen filters are pretty expensive, is there a cheaper alternative you would recommend?
Thank you so much! But I haven’t found any that are significantly cheaper, filters are pricey!
@@BradyBessette yes... ok😢
I am really happy for you. Your channel is growing and you deserve it. I remember watching your videos when you had just 5k subs.
thank you soooo much You're the best!

This is where I find a steadicam a nice hybrid between the two
Thanks for the killing tip an congrats winners!

Not to forget: thanks to you for the great content (and the giveaway of course) 😉
thank you thank you!
Every since I build a handheld rig my camera ain’t been on a gimbal since
it does happen lol
For small movements I am happy to go handheld. For large movements my RS2 is king.
The class just got exiting.
boo yah!
There is no "better". It is all about what works with the situation

Some companies make it easier! But I find struggles with quickly taking off my battery, rails, monitor, FF, etc!!
My fully rigged BMPCC4K goes from hand-held to Crane 3s in minutes, with no re-balancing required whatsoever.
Lucky you!
