Met Jacques in real life, what an awesome humble guy . His passion is truly infectious and shines through even more when you meet him.
Thank you Thomas, that means sooo much to me! Local support goes a long way on here :)
I have to agree. I was at Alpha Festival in Joburg but I didn’t get the opportunity to chat to Jacques, but his passion for filmmaking came through during his presentation.
As always, great work Jacques 👏🏽.
Lol now I want to go to Joburg just to meet him!
Not enough videos out there on psychology / purpose / WHY of camera choices. Great video. Jacques does it again!
Yo, Marshall. Thank you so much man. Really appreciate your comment! 🙏
@@jacques_crafford Absolutely stunning video. Please check your email
It's insane the amount of valuable information you fit into a 9 minute video, Jacques.
So stoked you find it valuable, thanks mate!
You can tell Jacques is passionate about his work. Its the relentless attention to detail and the seemingly limitless energy.
Thank you so much for the kind compliment! I really appreciate it so much! 🙏Really glad you appreciate the detail! Thank you for your support as a subscriber!
This is amazing! When everyone talks about complicated gears or editing for film making, Jacques focuses on what is really important. Just by showing how much a simple handheld shot and a gimbal shot could show you two different emotions with the same place, lighting and with the same subject was incredible ❤️ This video is really informative and easy to follow for basically anyone 💯
Wow, Ashish! Thank you so much for the really kind words. I sincerely appreciate that you feel this way about my videos. Means the world to me. Also, thank you so much for the support on my channel, I really do sincerely appreciate it! 🔥
exactly that's more important than. the kind of gear especially when every camera and gimbal is basically at the same level!
Great explanations, great video; thanks for sharing!
This video does an amazing job at verbalizing the things we as videographers and filmmakers do daily, but often don't think about. 100% will be sharing this video with others!
You are a seriously talented man! I’ve watched a bunch of your videos now and I’m blown away buy the quality of your work AND how good theses videos are. So informative. I’ve learnt more from a few of your videos than I have some paid courses. Thank you!
The only filmmaker with heart and lots of love. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏
YES. More videos on the subjects of WHEN AND WHY
Glad you like the when and why format. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
This is the best video on gimbal vs. handheld out there. Thank you very much!
Very useful and I like that you support your argument with great examples.
Jacques, you're a legend. The way you explain things is completely clear. Thank you. Been a fan of this channel for a while. Keep up the great work.
That's a massive compliment, thanks Hugo, appreciate you supporting my channel!
Jacques, in my personal opinion, this is probably the best tutorial you've ever posted. Ive been pretty good when it comes to choosing one over the other but never knew how to explain it to myself in my head lol.
PS. I did not know that South Africa has such incredible landscapes(clip of mountains).
Yooo Chris. Wow, dude, that is such a HUGE compliment to me. Thank you so much man. Really glad to hear! 🙏
Yea South Africa is truly a natural masterpiece! 😍
Moments always trump movement, another gem filled video from Jacques. I can't explain how much I learned from this very generous person. Now back to rewatching this again because there is a lot to unpack.
Ah, Mark! Thank you so much dude, I really appreciate it. Such an awesome comment! 🙏
I am now on my way to what I dreamed of and when I arrive I will never forget to thank you for helping me...lots of love for your creativity.
Good video. (No one covered anything like this when I studied film.) Your psychological/dramatic analysis is spot on. What I noticed about the handheld shots in your video is that my brain started to do what our brains do when we're walking around, smoothing the motion. This engages us making what's happening in the shot more real (enhancing the 'willing suspension of disbelief'). The extreme example is when a camera moves right to the edge of a building. (I've hung off mountain ridges, no rope - no problem. Approaching the edge of a building in a movie always scares the pants off me. ) So of course when handheld action became big in the 1990s they sometimes went overboard making it less engaging and just disruptive.
Perfectly explains why I use handheld- thank you
I never really thought of handheld being able to convey emotion more clearly than gimbal footage, but this totally makes sense! I definitely have felt that over-stabilized footage feels much less authentic overall. But, as you said, being able to use stabilization to highlight the subject purely is super helpful.
Glad it was helpful and that you were able to gain some insight from the video! Thank you so much for your comment! 🔥
Loved your differences using the Gimbal and going handheld.. I feel this is the Perfect answer people like me who were looking for the answer.
Very good advice! Thank you.

Jacques, you really put lot of effort in making this video, explained in very crystal clear way when to use use gimbal and when to avoid, at that time handheld is really good. The Feeling and movement part is really like you are giving the cinematography tips to film Hollywood movies. Lots of information is packed in this video. I like the contrast you get when you start with one and switch to the other. It helps highlight the change in emotion or energy.
Yea it definitely does! There is a time and a place for both styles! 🙏
Mantap buat belajar bikin film
Really useful beautifully told and so true. You’ve described what should be intuitive to us all who make videos. But to have a blueprint like yours is a real gem. Thank you 🌹

Yo thanks Ant, appreciate your support!🙏
thank you sir
so glad ive found your channel tonight best from oz down under!
Yooo Steve, so glad to have you here! 🔥
Those are some really good thoughts. Thanks a ton. :) I’ve defaulted to using a gimbal for a while because the rolling shutter on my A7C is SO bad, even light unavoidable jerks can cause distracting artifacts at focal lengths longer than 35 mm. Which is funny (or unfortunate) because I actually really love the control AND energy I can get from shooting handheld.
Would love a video on your handheld setup with the side handle, monitor etc. Keep up the great work Jacques
Stumbled upon this amazing video. You explained it so simple and clean without much drama what others do which is also shown in your work. Kudos..
