I have to agree. I was at Alpha Festival in Joburg but I didn’t get the opportunity to chat to Jacques, but his passion for filmmaking came through during his presentation.
As always, great work Jacques 👏🏽.

Thank you for the excellent explanation! Coming from an absolute beginner I would have thought the gimbal was the cure for everything.

This is amazing! When everyone talks about complicated gears or editing for film making, Jacques focuses on what is really important. Just by showing how much a simple handheld shot and a gimbal shot could show you two different emotions with the same place, lighting and with the same subject was incredible ❤️ This video is really informative and easy to follow for basically anyone 💯

I never really thought of handheld being able to convey emotion more clearly than gimbal footage, but this totally makes sense! I definitely have felt that over-stabilized footage feels much less authentic overall. But, as you said, being able to use stabilization to highlight the subject purely is super helpful.

Jacques, you really put lot of effort in making this video, explained in very crystal clear way when to use use gimbal and when to avoid, at that time handheld is really good. The Feeling and movement part is really like you are giving the cinematography tips to film Hollywood movies. Lots of information is packed in this video. Watching this video for last 1 hr repeatedly to take consideration in all the details you put into the video.

Good video. (No one covered anything like this when I studied film.) Your psychological/dramatic analysis is spot on. What I noticed about the handheld shots in your video is that my brain started to do what our brains do when we're walking around, smoothing the motion. This engages us making what's happening in the shot more real (enhancing the 'willing suspension of disbelief'). The extreme example is when a camera moves right to the edge of a building. (I've hung off mountain ridges, no rope - no problem. Approaching the edge of a building in a movie always scares the pants off me. ) So of course when handheld action became big in the 1990s they sometimes went overboard making it less engaging and just disruptive.

      @@jacques_crafford You're welcome ;-)
Your channel is really good in my opinion guys! There is maybe 3-4 channels on TH-cam that i'm pretty sure that every new video will be professional and helpful. Without typical youtube's copy/paste content.
So good luck guys with the channel! And looking forward for the new content from you ;-)

The way you explain this is like I have the same way of filming. I prefer always handheld on short films.. gimbal for portrait videos.. etc. Many movies they do use very steady shots.. gimbal but those are very well planned so that's why it looks so good. This is very important to learn when to use gimbal and when handheld.. if you mix wrong in one project gimbal / handheld.. the project can fail just because of that. Thank you for this very informative video .

Thanks for this Jacques! This is an excellent explanation of when to use a gimbal vs handheld that I may not have ever thought of. The use of the footage and comparison really nails this. I had shot some short clips handheld and was disappointed with the shakey results. The story of the clips was good. I shot the exact same scenes with a gimbal and completely lost interest in the storyline. I couldn't figure why until after watching this video.

Very honest, fantastic video! Honestly its hard to choose for a middle-weight bmpcc4k rig to get a gimbal, or start to build a slider set. But gimbals are so portable, and this video demonstrates well their strengh

8:46 how do you focus with the cine lenses? is it a nucleus or raven eye? or a focus puller?
