  • In this video, we look at different rig types that can help you get smooth handheld footage all day without getting fatigued. We're also showing the differences between the EasyRig and a standard Shoulder Rig and how we rig up both of these systems with the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro.
    If you have alternative rigs or other techniques you like to use more, let us know! We're always happy to learn :)

    What are your favorite handheld shooting techniques? Have you ever been inspired by a film or television handheld sequence? I personally love the car shot in Breathless (1960) where the camera is following them from behind. Actually, I love the shooting style of that entire movie. Let us know if you have anything similar!

    What a lovely video. Presented well and with some slight humour. New fan! Eager to try some of these things out for my 6k pro.

    Shoulder rigs and easy rigs are by far my favorite solutions for the handheld look, as well. Though I typically prefer a smooth, almost omnipotent camera, there are times when the material calls for a more unstable look. Great video, Jacob!

      Absolutely! Love these options. Totally feel you though, handheld definitely has its place - I've personally found, strangely enough, that I like the work I do more when its handheld - but there is something so satisfying to watching a camera glide through environments (not to mention many if not most directors/clients love this look). Thanks, man!

    Hey! Great video with decent quality! It would be also great to explore bmpcc6k pro with a gimbal combo. Additionally, since there is a new Tilta cage for 6k pro, it would be interesting to see a fresh setup with it. Keep it up man!

      Hey, thanks! Definitely looking into other stabilizers in the future so stay tuned :) - a gimbal video is probably going to be a little bit down the road but will happen at some point Im sure. Looking into the Tilta cage though' I'm a little limited by the current small cage setup that has the 1/4 20 holes in such a small area. Trying to find some more budget options (that arent smallrig, as I'm not a fan of the T5 drive mount on the bottom). But will do! Much more to come!

    Hey Jacob, loving your channel, it's really helped me embrace the image that comes out of the BMPCC6K pro versus the annoyances it has.
    Been searching for a handheld rig, thank you for helping me not spend a bunch of money trying to cobble something together..... I used to shoot a lot of sports broadcast in college, something about the camera on the shoulder feels right to me. At least in film you're only running for 5-10 minutes max, sometimes in broadcast you sit on something for like 20-30 minutes and the only rest is a commercial break for like 30 seconds haha. I also built your hi-hat which has came in clutch every shoot I've been on since. You're a true DIY genius.
    Best handheld for me though has to be Cassavetes and his collaborations with Al Ruban and their various operators

      Hey thanks man! Glad I could help, really appreciate your comments on my DIY projects, got some more cooking so always love to see the encouragement :)
      I don’t know how you broadcast guys do it, the longest handheld operating I’ve done was a 25 minute take and my feet hurtttt afterward. Broadcast guys are truly built different.
      Interesting on the Cassavetes handheld stuff, any links? I’d love to learn more!

      @@JacobVossFilms I can’t think of any links readily available but I’d recommend Faces, Husbands or A Woman Under the Influence where his style really came into fruition. Keep all the great work up!
      The parts for the rig came! Now just to manage the strange fact that all of the cables are pushed against my face…..do you typically just run cfast cards?

    Wondering what rig is suitable for a camera that is quite heavy like a Sony F55 and has moving shots ? Any suggestion would be grateful.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could just use the included mount with an Easyrig connected to the handle of the FS5 to carry weight if you want a handheld look or if you’re going for the more shoulderrig look, check out smallrigs offerings

  • @Skopefilms
    @Skopefilms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi! What about using a shoulder rig with easyrig? I have never tried but I have seen this kind of configuration before.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah likewise, I haven’t tried it either but I would assume it it useful if you have a heavy rig and want to take some weight off your shoulder, maybe a more budget ergorig. I would just worry about the Easyrig (and shoulder rig) limiting motion more than either of them alone - but I’ve seen it done just not entirely sure what it accomplishes (if anyone who knows more sees this, let us know!)

      As someone who has ran that setup before… Jacob hit the nail on the head. It decreases your overall mobility, but can be useful to reduce strain on your shoulder and neck when operating packages that are above 30-35lbs.

      Haven’t done it personally but have set it up for many DPs. The consensus seems to be they like it a lot for larger camera packages but it does limit maneuverability

    Long day of oping makes an easy rig into a sweaty rig. You got to let those things air out they get stinky.
