In this video I am going to show you how to install electric fans on a 03-04 silverado sierra tahoe or yukon. The process is the same for 99-02 but the wiring is a little different. In order for this to work using the factory electric fans you also need a 34" Core radiator. I will also be installing that in this video. If you have a 28" Radiator these electric fans will not fit. I also use a factory wiring harness. Several companies make a nice electric fan harness for the silverado tahoe sierra or yukon but I decided to make it all look oem. Since I was removing the clutch fan and radiator I also decided to install a 160 degree thermostat. If you are looking for improved gas mileage, more power and a smoother Idle you need to swap to electric fans. It is easy and can be done in an afternoon. It does require the use of hp tuners or a shop to turn on the fans. I try to show the process with hp tuners but if you are not familiar with it, take it to a professional tuner. Hit the Comments and let me know what you think.......

Love watching your videos keep it up!! I'm going to attempt this on my 04 crew cab.
Thank you
You are so damn professional and calm. Love how clean you are. Wishing I knew and was half as calm as you. Good job!
Thank you
I’ve got 2 03s using Nelson performance harness they work great
They make great stuff
gretings man awesome video i just needed the hp tuners tutorial that i have to find so i could do it myseft Great video
Thank you
Check your oil pressure switch. I had the same problem and the sensor was leaking and pushing oil all the way through the wiring into the PCM. Good video!
Actually replaced that a few videos back.
Coolant Temp sensor will do that too
That's what I hear
Your videos are excellent 👏 props my boy🙌
Thank you
Clean truck man!! And thanks for all the info
Thank you
Great video! Good job. Super nice truck
Thank you
That's such a nice looking truck 💯
Thank you
Beautiful clean Sierra 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you
Real nice how u do that so clean and well done thx
Thank you
So basically when I do this job I'll just ship you my truck Lol ok got it 👍 👌
Lol. Wish I had the time for that
@TWAMotorsports do you do pcm flash for turning on the fans?
@jamesmossettiii8936 I did
@@TWAMotorsportsdid you have to use different bolts to mount the e fans or did you use the ones that held the plastic fan shroud?
Only 2 extra long ones up top for fans
Very informative video thank you. I have done this swap on my 2004 Suburban using a fan harness from BP Automotive. 1999-2006 Silverado Sierra Tahoe Suburban Yukon Fan Harness for GM Fans. Fortunately I already had the longer 34" radiator so it was pretty much a 45 minute job including the programming of the ECM.
Definitely easier if you don't have to swap radiators
Dude, I wanna do this to my 03 Silverado sooo bad. Wish you were near by to help me out with it lol. Pining the wires is my biggest hold up.
Pinning isn't bad at all
I thought that was going to be my biggest hold up as well but it’s simple trust me.
Indeed
Would you be able to do a video installing a conversion from a manual ac control to a digital control unit on that gmc truck, that would be real interesting to watch, thanks in advance 👍👍
Not possible unless swapping entire interior for temp sensors
Nice set up
Thank you
I’ve got a 2003 Stepside like that and wanna do the fans since the ac sucks in summer if the truck isn’t rolling. Seems simple except for HP tuners. I went to their website and have no clue what to pay for or download or what. I have a Diablosport tuner so not sure if I’d need to unload that tune or modify it or what. Maybe I’ll just pull the engine and add a cam and lifters and then reinstall and have it dyno tuned! So I guess I’m gonna need you to do that first so I’ll have a tutorial. Thanks!!
Yeah you may need to use a tuner.
Doing this to mine. Also upgrading that alternator wire should helpnas well.
Wouldn't hurt
Check the connectors at any areas that are in direct contact with oil such as the oil pressure sender. Oil and transmission fluid can wick up the wire from a leaking sensor, it happens all of the time.
Think it was the oil sending unit
@@TWAMotorsports It can be. That's bad when that happens because most likely the recommendation is replacement of the entire wire harness. However there are probably so many vehicles out on the road with this happening and no one is the wiser.
Probably so
Travis do you have any information on efans for the 99-02 trucks not needing the extra relay to get the fans on high with ac? And I am using the factory harness.
I did the conversion on my green truck already
Great video, you should do a hydroboost brake swap one
Thank you
Did you have to upgrade your alternator been reading in forums it’s suggested to go from the 105amp to 130 or 145amp alternator? Any advice im doing on 01 and using the dorman 620-654 seven blade fan
I didn't but probably not a bad idea
Good work brother. Thanks for the video when it comes to the computer flash it seems easy am going to try this
Thank you
do you have to change out the A/C pressure switch to a sensor one? seen other videos that they also get the BP Automotive A/C upgrade Kit.
I never have
Nice video bro I’m doing LS swap installing a 5.3 in a 2000 Chevy Silverado i bought a wire harness for my e fans can I tap to coolant temperature switch or not
Not on those years. One in ecm and one to ac switch. Instructions online or with proper harness
I have oem harness How would I wire it my truck is 4.3 but I got oem fans n stuff do I jus put it where lights harness was connected or what all do I need to connect n do I need tha aftermarket harness too?
No idea on 4.3
Which one is fan 1 and which one is fan 2
Are both supposed to come on low and high once up to set temp, or is one fan low and one fan for high
Hey Travis, great video as always!! I’m wanting to do the same thing to my 03 Silverado. Is the ac delco radiator that you used the 21650 part no.? Can I ship my computer to any tuner and have it programmed for the electric fans? Thanks in advance!
I used an oem raditor from my local dealer. Yes any tuner should handle that with ease
Ok thank you, have a great day!
You're welcome. You too
Will this work on my 2001 gmc yukon i replaced radiator, fans and installed the relays off a 05 silverado. Will the wiring be the same
No wiring is different. I said that in this video and others I did.
I know videos old but when using hp tuners do I need a mandatory cable from them? Or can I just use and obd2 to usb cable?
You need theirs
Love it
Thank you
Do you ever have an issue with the engine turning off at idle after doing e fans? I’ve heard people say that you have to upgrade the alternator because of the power drawn out from the fans.
I haven't
Is there any benefit to running a cooler thermostat in a daily driver? I have an 07 Chevy Avalanche with the stock electric fans and stock 187 degree thermostat. I have a small transmission cooler and eventually want to upgrade to the trucool 40k as well.
Not really
@@TWAMotorsports ok, just curious. I plan on keeping the truck for a long time so just wanting to do what I can to increase longevity.
Either works great. Lower temp thermostat tricks computer to adding more fuel but doesn't necessarily help performance
Hey Travis if i tune my pcm would i still be able to pass emissions test since im in California or i wouldn't
I don't know that answer
What drop is that truck and what size wheels and tires you running . I have a 2004 Tahoe and I wanna drop the Tahoe and get those same wheel size.
All parts listed in video description. 22s. 6 inch rear drop
Hey Travis how are you? love your videos all. Got a question I just did an electric fans swap on a 04 avalanche got HP tuners to program but tested fans out but only one fan turns on when it hits about 190 degrees. My question is when do both fans turn on at the same time?
Or I might have a bad connector on the one that is not turn on I did check them before installing them and they both work fine.
Should both come on. Some only kick second fan when ac is activated
@@TWAMotorsports thank you 👍
You're welcome
GIven what's in the immediate vicinity of the ECM, I'd guess that it's power steering fluid in those connectors. Either someone spilled some while filling it, or a hose let loose or something.
Even those lines aren't close enough
I want to do this on a 2000 5.3 Sierra but I’m curious about the A/C system working as it should and the fans cycling on and off as the system requires do you have any insight, I know on these older trucks there is a pressure switch for compressor on off vs a pressure sensor on the newer trucks to control the fans. How do I integrate the two systems to make it work without my a/c freezing up?
They make a different kit for it.
The 99-02 trucks use a trigger wire off ac compressor to activate the fans with the ac compressor. You 1st need a tune to activate the fans based on engine temp. I've had an fan conversion on my Tahoe for over 10yrs..the issue is going to be burning up relays if the ac is cycling and you are at temp..both fans are gonna pull a lot of amps and create a lot of heat. I have a 270a alt that put out a lot of power. If you have the constant fan on condition after a tune you need to upgrade your computer to an 0411..there's so many things that. An go wrong..check tahoeyukonforum foe info on doing this swap.
Great info.
My truck had a red and blue for the computer instead of a green and blue and the red one had pin 33 occupied do i have to do anything different
Won't work the. Like I said in the video this is 03-04 not 99-02
What’s the least ammount required to purchase from HP tuner? What license level? Which dongle? Don’t need anything pro, just looking to do just this.
Pro is for adding wideband. Takes 2 credits for these trucks
I have a 2002 yukon im going to be doing this swap on. How much do think someone would charge to tune my ecm for this?
Process is completely different on the 99 to 02 like I stated in this video
Was a credit purchase necessary for turning on the fans with HPT? I need to buy one and start messing with it lol.
Yes. 2 credits for any changes for life
I just replaced the fan clutch on my 04 Tahoe because the a/c was struggling at idle, but now I can’t stand the sound of the mechanical fan. I really want to tackle this. Where did you get the harness from? It looks like it was a modified one harness.
Ebay stock one
What up man I’m getting close to doing the swap on my 01 sierra but is the new thermostat needed?
No. I just did it because I was draining the coolant
TW please help me out?!?
I have a question… I’d like to know could swap the climate control unit in my 04 sierra with the climate control unit from a 05 Yukon.
I mean, I think it can be done but can they interface??
No you can not
@@TWAMotorsports thanks for responding.. dang
You're welcome
Holding the jug of the forbidden kool-aid 😂
Lol. Pretty much
Which fan wiring harness hv you had the best luck using ,I see prices alll over the place? Thanks!
Buy a stock harness
Any mod is usually for the better! Doesn't look too difficult of a job. Wonder if a autel bidirectional scan tool be able to activate the fans? ✌🏻
I doubt that would activate fans
You might be able to command them on but that scanner won't write cooling fan operation parameters to the ecm. You'd need a tuning software.
Correct
Hey how did you know that the green wire went into blue computer. How will i know if my harness also is like that?
I give the instructions in the video if you have a 2003 up
Great job Travis, Q? I have seen some videos where to install a pressure switch so that the fans turn on automatically when the a/c is turned on, is that necessary? The second thing is what values did you use when activating the fans with hp tuner because each person does it in their own way and that makes it a bit confusing, it goes without saying that of all the videos I've seen I'll stick with yours, that's why I'd like to know the values in each box, thanks
It isn't necessary on 2003 up. As for values I used a stock 2005 truck base setting
Mine is a 2000 silverado, do you think i have to do something different to program the fans?
Yes. You don't have the hook up for the a/c on the factory ecm for thise years. Did this on my green truck a while back. Did a video on it that is on the channel
Can you send me the link please, i try to find it with no luck thanks
Can't send links here. Google how to lower sierra. It will pop up
Will you or did you ever swap out the air intake for a knn cold air intake ??
I did that in a separate video
Question the original alternator manages fine with amps to run new fans?
Mine did
what causes a radiator fan not to come on , i change all cooling fan rely , new coolant temperature sensor and wire. the fan only come one when it not plug in to the new coolant temp sensor
So may things could be happening
Any idea why my e fans connectors melted? Man both connectors melted on black wire side. Could it be the fans? Or bad ground connection? When it had the oem harness it burnt a connector and the relay small box as well man. Any idea?
Could be a combination of all of the above.
@@TWAMotorsports think I got it fixed it was the ground wire I had spliced to extend it lol I used a thinner ground wire instead of the same size. Thanks either way man
👍
Is this applicable only for 1/2 tons or can it be done on 2500 & 3500 Silverados?
It is
@@TWAMotorsports nice 😎👍
12:28 do you know if I can buy that connector separately? I bought a harness from a guy and he cut them off rather than remove the pins from the ecm.
I'm sure somebody sells them. No idea who though
@@TWAMotorsportsluckily I found one lol.
Good deal
did you find it online? i been looking for one for a while now
Sup Travis, would this work for a 2000 sierra?
Different harness
i have a 01 silverado 1500. would it be the same ?
Nope
Hey I have a 01 Chevy Silverado would the swap still work
No. Different wiring. Said that in the video
Any link for the fans? I clicked the one on your description but it doesn’t have a specific ones.
I bought mine used from salvage yard but wanted to give other options
I bought my fans from Ebay, 2008 Cadillac Escalade with a 6.0 liter for my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. Prices vary from $100, to well over $200.My truck has a 5.3 in it. real handy , can keep my windows closed, run the A/C pulling water trailers in the desert for our wild game drinkers. Truck never goes over 215. I remeber when getting close to the same in older trucks ( non computerized) was kinda pushing it.
215 is a little high in my opinion
@@TWAMotorsports Perhaps. But outside temp is 110 and only going 5 mph, hence the electric fans and chucking the mechanical fan.
What are your tires and wheel you are running and sizes look really good
265/40/22. Link in description I think
@@TWAMotorsports thank you for the information
You're welcome
Oil in PCM is from bad oil pressure sensor pushing oil through the harness to the PCM
Actually replaced that too
Just replaced my radiator but it’s the SMALLER ONE is that a problem?
No but fans wont fit it
I think the oil on the ecm connectors is probably from someone servicing or replacing power steering pump or lines and spilled oil on the connectors. That is the only way on thar side of the engine bay.
Must be. Nothing is close
what temp do you have the fans to turn on ?
Used hp tuners file to get that info. Too much to list here
Could this be done on a 2000 gmc 4.3?
Not the method
We’re do I get the pins or is it just wire
Need stock pins for ecm. They come with Most harnesses
Trying to figure out what year and vehicle that fan pack came out of.
2005 up yukon tahoe suburban escalade silverado sierra
Thank you
@robertlondrie-k3v you're welcome
The wire 33 you have to remove to put in the new one what does that effect?
Shouldn't be a wire there
Also got a wire in 33 (2000 Silverado) 30 is empty
I specifically said in this video it only works on 2003 up.
just did mine, my ac blows hot at first, but blows cold when it reaches operating temperature, anyone else had this problem? and how did you guys fix it?
Head pressure on the ac is going bananas. Something isn't set up correctly
Why repin in the computer when you could just tag into the 87 on the fuel pump relay
You do you. I will wire like it is supposed to be
Why the 160 thermostat , I thought those engines like to run hotter ?
Like them to run cooler.
What year is your truck
2003
My fans spin in push instead of pull any ideas?
Plugged in backwards then
@@TWAMotorsportsconnectors only go in one way what could be plugged in wrong to cause that
Then someone wired the harness wrong
What year is the truck?
2003
What year is that truck
2003
Why do you have to put in a new radiator?
Old one was 28" i said that in the video
Just being curious why the E fan
Frees up power. Better mileage. Smoother idle
@@TWAMotorsports thank you
You're welcome
watched an other vid were he had to up grade the alternator, I noticed you did not.
No upgrade on alternator
7:25 The Jesus clip
Is that what you call it?
So when I bought my truck it had e fans but they were running direct so took the truck to a shop and they did a crappy job, truck overheats the fuse keeps burning out, they connect it to the fuse box instead to the computer also the hood got cracked and faded
That sucks
Did u fix it? I have the same problem and my fans never turn off only when I take off the fuse
Got the same harness it didn’t work
What year is your truck?
@@TWAMotorsports 2002 Silverado
That would be why. Like I said in the video. That harness only works on 03-06
Have you ever heard anyone having trouble with their alternator not putting out enough amps
I have but never had that issue
Im experiencing this right now when running my AC. Arizona summer, any advice on sizing an upgraded alternator?
May need to upgrade the alternator
I did this swap in late 2018. I had to get a higher amp alternator. You will also have to get a new belt for that size alternator.
Doesn't hurt to do that at all
I think is better if i send u my 1999 silverado and help me instal my electric fan 🥵🥵🥵
I wish I had time to do stuff like that

👍
Powersteering fluid for the mystery oil…maybe? When my hydro boost lines went tits up, I had oil all over the place on that side.
It was the oil pressure sensor
@@TWAMotorsports well huge plus it was found! Definitely using your video to do this swap for my 04 Avalanche soon. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Thank you. Hope it helps
HP thing … Some will understand… some won’t .. I was lost. Don’t get the anything you said …. Just did my sons 2 weeks ago. Still a great vid .
Yeah it takes some time to learn. I still have a lot to learn with it.
For as many trucks that you work on you should have a fan wrench
Probably so
Would have been nice to see them working while it's running.
That is hard to film
Was the truck ever under coated to prevent rust ? That shit gets everywhere...
No
Truck its not for sale??? Thanks
Already sold
@@TWAMotorsports what is the price on this vehicle like the black gmc?? Thanks
I sold it for 13500
@@TWAMotorsports thanks again
👍
The fans came out of a 2006 chevy silverado?
Sure
Can you feel any significant power gain by doing this swap just curious?
On my 02 4.8, I did feel like it added a little better peddle response, but not any dramatic power difference. Best way to add HP is cold air intake, cat back exhaust, and tune.
Not really. Definitely snappy and idles smoother
Absolutely I agree with throttle response
what year truck are the fans off of ?
I believe they come off of an 05-06 or even the newer gen ones fit
Correct
