It’s the same show, just an updated art style. They took a break from Batman: The Animated Series to make Superman: The Animated Series and it became a huge hit so naturally, they wanted to introduce their Batman from BTAS in Superman: The Animated Series so they updated Batman’s art style to fit in closer to Superman’s more streamlined and modern art style. Once they did that, they decided to do one more season of BTAS (now titled The New Batman Adventures) with the updated art style! The New Batman Adventures features the Bat-Family more than Batman: The Animated Series did, which was cool! I like the new art style too!

Tim Drake is the 3rd (and at the time current) robin in the comics and this marks his first animated debut. Whilst this version is called "Tim Drake" its pretty clear he is primarily based on Jason Todd the second robin, sharing the same backstory as comic Jason. Many DCAU characters are amalgamation of several characters who share the same hero identity. Interestingly a relatively recent DCAU comic, batman the adventure continues, establishes that Jason Todd became and then stopped being robin in between the time skip. Jason's existence in the DCAU was often theorised by fans because Tim's costume is said have been a previous robin's and yet looks completely different to Dick's. Likewise Two face doesn't seem to notice tim is clearly younger than dick. These two things led people to believe Jason may have existed despite not being referenced in show before the comic officially introduced him.
Also when this show was made in 1997, Jason Todd was still dead in the comics as the Under the Hood storyline wouldn't happen until 2005. It's the same reason Wally West was The Flash in the Justice League animated series because Barry Allen was still dead until he was fully resurrected in 2009. I believe the animators probably thought Jason Todd's origin was simpler to explain in 20 minutes than Tim Drake's origin which is a little more convoluted and is really a response to how Batman, the character, was darker than usual after Jason's death.

This new season of BTAS (The New Batman Adventures) featured and focused a lot more on the Bat-Family than they previously did in BTAS. They made Bruce/Batman slightly more stern and colder to juxtapose him against the lighter more upbeat Bat-Family and to show his progression as a crime fighter becoming more hardened over the years of being a vigilante in a city like Gotham. Bruce starts out with a lot more warmth in BTAS but his experiences, from having so much riding on him to many of his villains failing to redeem themselves, slowly starts turning him harder and colder. But then he meets Superman. I like Nightwing, Batgirl, and Robin, but they aren't really people Bruce can see as true peers. To him they are all kids who got into crime fighting directly because of him and thus he is responsible for them. But Clark/Superman is a hero completely separate from him and would be who he is regardless of Batman's existence. Bruce finally has a true peer and equal he can interact with. And this continues on into Justice League. While he's always still serious and cynical, Bruce starts to lighten up a bit, because he is now on a team of people just as capable as he is who are all heroes for their own reasons. He can actually feel somewhat secure sharing the burden with them. Like, can you imagine the Batman we see in this episode sitting down to eat lunch with Green Lantern and Wonder Woman in a cafeteria and having a casual conversation about each other's love lives? The reason they went back to the old intro is because originally when this aired on TV it and Superman TAS were one show called The New Batman/Superman Adventures with an intro featuring them both but for DVD they were split into BTAS season 4 and STAS season 3.
Much like the DCAU version of Clayface is an amalgamation of Matt Hagen and Basil Karlo, using Hagen's name and Karlo's backstory, this version of Tim Drake is an amalgamation of Tim and Jason Todd, utilizing Tim's name and design, and Jason's backstory.
It is SUCH a great suit. I feel like Batgirl mainly being black and yellow with just a blue(this design) or purple(first New 52) part to her cape is peak Batgirl design. Have not been a fan of her designs over the last couple years that moved away from it.
There’s an episode that fills in what happened with Dick Grayson/Robin and Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in between the gap of time between seasons. It’s a great one!
The reason for the old intro was that when this started to air it did so back to back with the 2nd season of Superman the animated series and they had one (really cool) split intro, so on streaming/home release the reused the old intro here and Superman uses it's season 1 intro.
Rich Fogel has stated that while writing this episode he had a hard time acclimating to working on a superhero show that allowed more action than Super Friends, and was continually told to push it further.
The one gripe that I have about this season is that they made Bruce Wayne a lot colder. He had compassion, especially for children, in the earlier seasons, but now he comes off as harsh.
They made Robin a mix of Jason Todd and Tim Drake, a natural like Tim but a cocky thief like Jason, I guess Jason's story was too heavy for this show, but they made an homage for both.
I mean, he’s not really a mix. He’s Jason in literally every way but the name. The creators wanted to use Jason but were told not to by the studio because A) Jason was still dead at this point and they didn’t want to make things that dark and B) Tim was Robin in the comics and they wanted to capitalise on that. The former being especially ironic considering what happens to Tim eventually
From Fox Kids to Kids WB, the animated series becomes The New Batman Adventures aka Gotham Knights (September 1997-January 1999) until a week after Batman Beyond jumped off. More of The Bat Family becomes involved with these newer episodes. Not much of an retcon. We would see Superman with his own animated series and co-existing in the same universe. But It's a definite continuation from where the series left off from Fox Kids. Tim Drake was introduced in the comics about 35 years ago. When he first became Robin, it was in 1990 with a storyline that featured Two Face. Tim Drake headlined the first-ever ROBIN solo series in 1993. The new looks of the characters resemble their comic-book counterparts perfectly (especially Batman's black and gray). Bruce finally with all of his pupils together warms the heart. Tim Drake becoming part of this world, Babs & Grayson's reintroduction and Bats as still the consumate detective was setting up even bigger things for the future.
Tim drake is easily my fav Robin (IMO) He is really underused in series and movies but all the things people know Robin for is mainly from him which I find interesting
It's finally time for season 3!! I absolutely love the art style in this season, along with the art style in the first two seasons! And we get to hear Tara Strong as Batgirl!
Yes, this part of the series is a time jump because a portion of the Superman animated show happened between the Batman & Robin titled episodes and this one. The reason why I say "portion" is because the studio wanted the crew to do a new show, but the rights for the Batman TV licencing was held by Fox until a later date during the Superman show run. So during that time they could only ALLUDE to Batman in other Bruce Timm headed shows like Freakazoid. Also yeah, the intro that was made for this season originally was due to being paired with the Superman show so they sort of shared an intro, but they just went back to the OG for the home rereleases of this season. So technically the guys here SHOULD have watched the Superman show first before this season but they aren't because WB is kind of shit managing all this. So yes, the reasoning for the intro change is just more for home release reasons because "we don't wanna confuse our audience that it's a Batman & Superman show" despite that's sort of how they marketed it originally now that I think about it. But that's also more because the episodes were airing concurrently. But the reason why the "Batman & Robin" intro exists at all and why Robin was more prominent during that stretch is because the studio wanted more Robin showcase because "connect with the kids" which infected most of the DCAU after the initial Batman show. Which honestly I'd suggest informing them about this and letting them see said Batman & Superman intro just for context. As far as Batman's knowledge, this may be getting to the point where "Bruce Wayne" is making less and less appearances. (LATER EPISODE SPOILERS, SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE ROBIN SUIT & THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BARB AND DICK) For those that will be ultimately confused for the costume design kerfuffle (because I guarantee there will be when we get to a certain later episode because they talk about it a little here), there is no REAL established reason why the Robin suit looks the way it does here compared to classic BtAS design. My opinion? At least for the suit that Tim first sees, my thought is that it's MEANT to be the same green pants design from BtAS, but this was at a stage where they likely didn't think they'd be bringing back that design that will be brought back later on, so they just simply used the present red suit Tim wears. But I DO think that SPECIFICALLY for THIS EPISODE, CANONICALLY Tim is wearing the green pants design but it just COMES ACROSS as the iconic red look we see here. If you want more details about the whole mess that's stacked on TOP of it even outside the show itself, I suggest Watchtower Database's video, "The Red Robin Costume Came Out of Nowhere." For the relationship between Barb and Dick, this is when it starts getting weird. This is roughly when they start doing the "Bruce and Barb" relationship. But here's the big issue compared to what happened in the original comics. In the original comics, SHE WAS STILL IN THE SAME ROUGH AGE RANGE WITH BRUCE. Meanwhile here, SHE'S IN HER 20'S AND BRUCE IS LIKE IN HIS 40'S. SO YEAH, THAT'S GOING TO BE...FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUN.
It upsets me how unknown Tim Drake is outside of the comics and how he’s had like… one decent adaptation and even in that adaptation he had most of his iconic stuff given to Dick like happens in most Robin adaptations. And in this one he’s Tim Drake in name only so… yeah. And they skip over him entirely in the DCAMU. I just wish they could tell his story to a wider audience properly.
And now James Gunn's new DCU is skipping EVERY Robin...And going straight to Damian Wayne! Apparently, Damian Wayne is Gunn's favorite iteration of the Robin character in the entirety of DC comic book history.
@@Mechasonicrocks As much as I don’t like that they are skipping to Damian: I want to remain fair. The other Robins can still be included and there’s always a chance they can bounce around the timeline a little bit and tell stories that happened before the start of the DCU. The MCU has done that since Phase 1, so I’m holding out hope that the DCU might actually give us something good.
This was the art style I remember watching Batman on Kids WB usually paired with Superman the Animated Series & then into Batman Beyond. This would be the default art style going forward in the DCAU
Edward Norton would play a fantastic Victor Fries. I've always wanted them to atone for what they did to Mr. Freeze in the movie. Tragic character, definition of a sympathetic villain, really empathetic and complex and deserved so much more than what was given.
Not sure why people told you to start with Ep 2. Ep 1 is a Christmas episode that brings a lot of the characters' new redesigns to the fore, as well as creating a mystery with the appearance of the new Robin. Oh well, nice to see Tim Drake in animation- a very different character from the old Robin. The main purpose of the redesign is to bring it more in line with the Superman animated series for Justice League, but as you'll see it also allows for more fluid action in a lot of scenes.
I have to say, the first batsuit from this series is great and an utter classic, but I have a huge soft spot for these grey and black suits. Both are really great.
The Kids' WB censors were much more flexible with episode content than the Fox Kids censors were with Batman: The Animated Series. Producer Bruce Timm recounted that "when we were at Fox, after every single storyboard, we would get five single-spaced pages of notes on things we couldn't do. On the WB, we usually get maybe two paragraphs of stuff we can't do. At Fox, they were really picky, not just about things you couldn't do, but just in terms of content and story. They had a million opinions about what we should be doing. Nobody bothers us like that at the WB".
Batman The Animated Series. Harvey: Bruce good old Bruce you are always there you never give up on me. Batman New Adventures: Batman shows no mercy and punches him so hard Harvey I think Bruce has giving up on you.
I have a love/hate dynamic with this version of Tim Drake. On the one hand he’s just Jason Todd in everything but name and since he’s my favourite Robin it’s nice to have a good interpretation of him. On the other hand JUST CALL HIM JASON TODD!
I know this was a poll show n' all, but I would not have minded production order over aired order, nor would I or I think a lot of people minded if they ended B:TAS with Sub-Zero and slapped S:TAS on a poll

Have they said if they're doing Superman, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Zeta Project, Gotham Girls, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Brainiac Attacks, Return of the Joker and JL Vs Fatal Five?
I personally like the new artstyle, but there are a few redesigns I absolutely hate: Poison Ivy and Catwoman are major downgrades for me. The "realistic" design is replaced for a more cartoon-y one. And while Joker is largely the same, I dislike how they changed his eyes (something they would change back in non TAS appearances such as the justice league and Beyond shows)

8:26 That's why he is called "The World's Greatest Detective", slim. It's all about "sharp eyes".
Eric, to answer your question, the first person I think of when you say "Mr. Freeze" is Otto Preminger.
"Wild,...simply wild!"
Tim drake is easily my fav Robin (IMO)
He is really underused in series and movies but all the things people know Robin for is mainly from him which I find interesting
(LATER EPISODE SPOILERS, SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE ROBIN SUIT & THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BARB AND DICK)
For those that will be ultimately confused for the costume design kerfuffle (because I guarantee there will be when we get to a certain later episode because they talk about it a little here), there is no REAL established reason why the Robin suit looks the way it does here compared to classic BtAS design. If you want more details about the whole mess that's stacked on TOP of it even outside the show itself, I suggest Watchtower Database's video, "The Red Robin Costume Came Out of Nowhere."
For the relationship between Barb and Dick, this is when it starts getting weird.
You guys will see why everyone wanted you to see this one first when you finally *do* watch the first one. Trust us, there's a good reason.
It's great you're reacting to this series!
You’re not ready for the weird relationship drama between Barbara and several characters in this show going forward 😂
Yeah, Bruce Timm's fetishes really started leaking out here.
The arrival of Tim Drake spells for some dark times in the bat family 😬
Personally, I always preferred this art style over the original, tho that could be cuz I watched this first; I just like how sharp everything looks!
I defintely enjoy this part of the Batman Animated series, I feel like this leads us into a bigger universe.
I know Eric has seen some of batman beyond but I wonder if Calvin and Aaron have
the reason they skipped jason they felt he was too matire for the show and tim was more family friendly there will be a lot of redesigns
Batman beyond is where they've seen that suit before
I have to say, the first batsuit from this series is great and an utter classic, but I have a huge soft spot for these grey and black suits. Both are really great.
The costume was in fact, not the one Dick had on when he left or a visual art change lol.
On the other hand JUST CALL HIM JASON TODD!
were getting close to Batman BEYOND !!
I know this was a poll show n' all, but I would not have minded production order over aired order, nor would I or I think a lot of people minded if they ended B:TAS with Sub-Zero and slapped S:TAS on a poll
If they’ve seen Goldeneye before they should know about Janus.
Would love for them to do Superman and than JL and JLU
Another amazing video
The New Batman Adventures! This would also be a good time to react to "Superman: The Animated Series".
YES THEY SHOULD
I really hope they do the Batman Superman special from this series
I hope you do the animated Justice League and Justice League Unlimited - probably the best DC animated shows
AFTER SUPERMAN OTHERWISE THEY WON'T UNDERSTAND JL AND
JLU SINCE THE DCAU IS A CONNECTED UNIVERSE
i think this show made me love nightwing as my favorite superhero in dc and if the justice league series takeplace after this i love to know what ever happend to dick grayson and yes he is nightwing already something happend between bruce and richard not sure if it was the whole killing joke style event at least i think there are some comics who show what happend
JASON DOESN'T EXIST IN THIS UNIVERSE AFTER DICK COMES TIM DRAKE
AND YOU WILL
Thou Tim drake is new Robin his backstory is based on Jason Todd.
Like comic Tim's suit has No green
Once you finish The New Batman Adventures, please continue the DCAU with Superman TAS > Batman Beyond > Batman Beyond RotJ > JL > JLU. It is a tremendous celebration of DC and their properties!
Have they said if they're doing Superman, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Zeta Project, Gotham Girls, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Brainiac Attacks, Return of the Joker and JL Vs Fatal Five?
Yes, Dick is already Nightwing.
I personally like the new artstyle, but there are a few redesigns I absolutely hate: Poison Ivy and Catwoman are major downgrades for me. The "realistic" design is replaced for a more cartoon-y one. And while Joker is largely the same, I dislike how they changed his eyes (something they would change back in non TAS appearances such as the justice league and Beyond shows)
Do Superman next then Batman Beyond. It is very important you see Batman Beyond before JLU
Hope you’ll react to Batman Beyond at some point too.
you should watch superman the animated series season 1 and 2 before this but ok
Watching the Worlds Finest three parter is really the only necessary viewing.
@@acidrain92 not at all, you have braniac origin story and various other villain origin story that appear in justice league and justice league unlimited such as toyman, parasite, live wire, etc. you have the start of the beef with superman and darkseid, and a varios other arcs that continue in justice league and justice league unlimited
@@edlb10 Sure, but there's no guarantee that they'll even watch Justice League. World's Finest is necessary viewing for The New Batman Adventures, which they are currently watching. There's no need to watch the entire show before watching TNBA, which is what your original comment implied.
If it comes down to it, they can always watch Superman TAS after this, or before Justice League, but World's Finest is all that is necessary for TNBA.
@@acidrain92 yeah if they gonna watch only TNBA its not really necessary, but I hope keep watching the whole universe, I counting on this
Ugh. “Old Wounds” is 16 episodes away…
Well, it explains everything, fellas! Barbara’s identity being known… Dick quitting…
Hey! I don't mind you guys posting these episodes...But you're sort of suppose to post the first episode being Holiday Knights and then Sin of the Father. Just saying is all, still love your works of course. :)
Holiday Knights spoils Tim Drake. That one will be next week's reaction.
My disappointment is immeasurable.
New batman adventures
Tim Drake in this series more of a weird Jason Todd Tim Drake hybrid... Look how they massacared my boy
Still pretty cool though ot acceptable at least
love it
13:18 😮😂
Is it an unpopular opinion to like the DCAU Tim Drake Robin than Dick's?
I hope you react to Batman Beyond
Where Is episode 1
did you even watch the video? they explain they were told to swap the episode order
@@traupman84 must have skip that part
REACT TO SUPERMAN NEXT SINCE THE DCAU IS A CONNECTED UNIVERSE
Unrelated, but I pray for the day The Owl House shows up on this channel. 💜
....Where the hell is the first episode?
it is explained in the beginning of the video first this and then next week ep 1
WHERE IS THE FIRST EPISODE HOLIDAY KNIGHT??
it's spoils Tim
did you even watch the video? they explain they were told to swap the episode order.
