  • Located in the county of Devon, on the south coast and around 80 miles east of the western tip of mainland England, is the city of Plymouth.
At the time of the Domesday Book of 1086 Plymouth was recorded as 'Sudtone' - a settlement consisting of just seven households. The name 'Plymouth' only came into use from the 13th century, literally denoting its position at the mouth of the River Plym. In 1254 a charter was granted by Henry III, making it a town.
During the Hundred Years War of the 14th and 15th centuries, Plymouth became the subject of multiple attacks from the French. In retaliation it provided ships in support of the siege of Calais (1346-1347), contributing to an English victory. Later on, in 1356, Edward, the Black Prince, scored a decisive English victory at the Battle of Poitiers, having embarked with his forces from Plymouth, where he later returned along with King John of France who was held for ransom. Multiple retaliatory attacks from the French followed, with arguably the worst occurring in 1403 when much of the town was burnt.
In 1577, Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe began at Plymouth. He left aboard the Pelican, which would later be renamed the Golden Hind during the voyage. In 1580 he arrived back in Plymouth with a rich cargo of spices and Spanish treasure. Then, in 1588, Drake masterminded the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Legend has it that he was playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe (the area at the start of the walk). On being warned of the approach of the Spanish fleet, Drake is said to have remarked that there was plenty of time to finish the game and still beat the Spaniards.
In 1620 Plymouth played a key role in the transportation of the Pilgrims to the New World. The Mayflower left London for Southampton where it anchored whilst waiting for the planned rendezvous with the Speedwell, coming from Holland. Having set sail for America, they were forced to turn back over 200 miles beyond Land's End due to a leak on the Speedwell. Both ships turned back, docking at Plymouth where 20 Speedwell passengers joined the Mayflower, which went on to America, arriving after two months. Thus, in 1620, Plymouth, Massachusetts was founded around the disembarkation point, named after Plymouth, Devon of course.
In 1690 the first Royal Dockyard opened on the banks of the Tamar west of Plymouth. Further docks were built in 1727, 1762 and 1793, and a huge naval complex was later established, including the communities of Plymouth Dock and Stonehouse. Throughout the Industrial Revolution, Plymouth grew as a commercial shipping port, handling imports and passengers from the Americas, and exporting local minerals. The Navy's role during the Napoleonic Wars was pivotal, and in 1812 a mile-long breakwater was laid to protect the fleet.
In 1848 the railway arrived in Plymouth courtesy of the South Devon Railway. The present station dates from 1877 and has direct connections to London Paddington to the east, Penzance to the west and Cardiff via the Severn Tunnel.
In 1914 Plymouth merged with two neighbouring towns - the County Borough of Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse, to become the County Borough of Plymouth. In 1928 it was granted city status.
During the Second World War, Plymouth was subject to a series of devastating bombing raids by the German Luftwaffe. The docks were the principal target but much of the city was destroyed. Attacks continued all the way until 1944, by which point over a thousand civilians were killed and more than 3,700 houses were destroyed. Plymouth Hoe Pier, built in 1880, was also hit.
Plymouth is represented in sport by Plymouth Argyle Football Club. Founded in 1886, they are nicknamed 'The Pilgrims'. They have played their home games at Home Park since 1901.
Famous people from Plymouth include actor Tim Curry (although born in Cheshire), newsreader Angela Rippon and Olympic diver Tom Daley.
